1 out of 5 stars Beware - this is NOT the right version!.......2007-07-07

This is a fantastic CD and all, but as of July '07, what they're shipping is not the "10 Years After" (Dix Ans Apres) version, which includes a bonus disc and has all 33 pieces listed on this page. I got a single 16-song disc, the same one I bought 3 or 4 years ago. Buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Disc one is great....disc two doesn't exist...beware.......2007-07-05

I have the original 16-track version of this recording and couldn't agree more with the glowing comments left by others. However, this listing is somewhat misleading as the reviews mention that it is a newer release with a bonus disc containing 17 extra tracks. Since other reviews and the Alia Vox website itself mention that such a thing exists, I went ahead and ordered it, only to receive the same single disc version I already had. Amazon tells me the double one isn't available, so beware.

It's still great music though.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-06-11

I was introduced to this utterly, utterly gorgeous soundtrack via a "friend of a friend", to whom I am eternally grateful. I listened to this on cassette tape too many times to count. The music is hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric, dark and moody, tragic and deep. This is music from the Baroque period but nothing like Bach, or Purcell, or Handel.

5 out of 5 stars Vive Savall and M. Sainte Colombe .......2006-04-27

I saw the film and was enthralled by the portrayals of Sainte Colombe and Marin Marais. (Depardu was superb as always.) Some reviewers thought the film dull or tedious. I suppose in today's film culture where there is so much action without much substance there are those who would concur. I thought is was an excellent study of the characters and the music, which is rarity even in films about musicians.

5 out of 5 stars French Baroque Performed by The Absolute Master of the Viola Da Gamba.......2005-10-09

In addition to French Baroque being generally and wrongly relegated to secondary status compared to Italian or German Baroque, there are probably less than 200 professional players who specialize in the viola da gamba as an instrument which was used mostly by French Baroque composers. Out of those few 200 performers, Jordi Savall is the undisputed master of his craft not only in performing French Baroque but really any Baroque piece for the viola da gamba. This soundtrack is a fine example on the diversity and depth of not only the viola's range but on works of various composers during the French Baroque period: especially the works of Marais and Sainte-Colombe. This album is also a great sample of the simply exemplary talent of Jordi Savall as a violist.

The double album primarily contains solos or duets for viola da gamba by Marais and Sainte-Colombe but has pieces by other contemporaries such as Lully. This album is a great sample of the variety of works and composers of the unique French Baroque tradition that continued to use the viola while other musical styles in Europe had virtually abandoned it for the cello. The viola da gamba has a lot more range, depth, and resonance than the cello and so the music is moodier and more contemplative than cello works such as Bach's magnificent cello suites. Solo music for viola from the French Baroque also allows freer interpretation than conventional compositions for orchestra or other chamber pieces. The jewel in this album is Marais' haunting but divine Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve in which the dynamics of the violas and violins are truly a spiritual voyage into one's soul; at points serenely docile to demonically ferocious as if phantasms both luring and forbidding the listener to follow. The intricate complexity and resonance of this exquisite piece makes it one of the most spiritually moving Baroque sonet variations I have ever heard and it's one of my personal favorites. Both Marais and Sainte-Colombe were probably the pinnacle of achievement in terms of expressive techniques for the viola da gamba during the French Baroque period while later contemporaries such as Forqueray and Couperin became more formulaic although no less accomplished.

Jordi Savall has many priceless performances apart from this soundtrack and he is really the only competent artist for both viola da gamba specifically and primarily all French Baroque interpretations. There are no other viola players who can even compare to Savall as they really sound as little else than amateurs in comparison to his applied skills and passion of playing. I strongly recommend for anyone looking for music for viola da gamba or really any French Baroque to buy Savall/Le Concert Des Nations' performances exclusively as there's simply nothing else to look for or find that's in his caliber. Apart from a few other performnances by groups such as Les Arts Florissants, I guarantee you that the performances of all others in this style will rise to no further than being mediocre at best such as Harncourt or even Koopman who often plays with Savall. Most other viola performers quickly descend to atrocious standards in comparison to those of Savall. Even though Savall's recordings tend to be on the more expensive side, he's worth every penny take my word for it: you won't regret it! What you will regret is having bought a mediocre viola peformance after you hear Savall's as the differences will be very significant.

Couperin composed these delectable works in 1714 and 1715 for the Louis XIV's Sunday chamber music concerts. When they were published in 1722, he specified the instruments employed in those concerts without indicating how they're used in each of the 25 movements in these four suites. Jordi Savall has taken his cue from Couperin's open-ended particulars to allot lead voices and parts to fit each movement's character, with marvelous results. The music ranges stylistically from lugubrious Preludes to court dances and folk-inspired tunes. Savall and his outstanding players make this graceful music irresistible, finding in it not only courtly elegance but also unexpected expressiveness, as in the melancholy opening Preludes and elsewhere. Everyone will have their own favorite tracks (movements) to return to as "encores" after the disc ends, but be warned: it's hard not to continue on to the next track, and then the next, till you've played the disc through again. This is one of those "don't-miss-this-one" discs. Enjoy! --Dan Davis

    5 out of 5 stars Pure enjoyment.......2005-09-22

Listening to this excellent CD is just pure enjoyment.
This is french baroque at its best ( one would not expect less from Savall and his fantastic ensemble !).
You also get a great variety of top performances : oboe, flute, violin and viola da gamba as soloists.
If you like baroque music, just get this one .

4 out of 5 stars Good but not Great........2005-08-08

While Savall has gathered some of the top players today to join him, the result is largely individualistic. Attention to fine details is lacking, as often ornaments are not played together in the same fashion, nor are phrases entirely similar. The orchestrations are clever and Savall and his collegues give us quite a number of rather touching movements. The overall result is good, and certainly better than some of the terribly square recordings existing on the market already (Robert Claire's bland offering comes to mind). I do find it a shame that given the potential for something quite spectacular with Savall, the end result is just 'good'.

    5 out of 5 stars Sublime Music.......2005-08-01

This is an absolutely lovely CD for anyone who appreciates Baroque period music. The music is beautifully performed.

5 out of 5 stars In the service of the king.......2005-07-27

Imagine your charge: you are court composer to the most powerful man who has ever lived. The old king is dying, slowly, his faculties are gradually receding. He has his lucid moments, remembering this or that great triumph. He has his dreamy moments, his visions of beauty and pleasure. His majesty wishes to be entertained, surrounded by those he most highly esteems. The year is 1714, the place the Palais de Versailles: the King is Louis XIV.

You are Francois Couperin. Your music must not jar the king from his reveries, it must carry him, like a leaf, down a graceful French stream on a bright spring day. The birds must twitter, the breezes blow, and the sun! The sun must bounce off the waves as dazzling and blinding jewels of light. Your music must capture the king's melancholy, for he knows his life is ending, and he wants only the bittersweet relish of his life's sweet moments.

You have dazzled him for fifteen years with your own harpsichord music. You know others have greatly pleased him with their music as well: the great Lully, the sublime Marais, that cantakerous Ste Colombe.

So you create a series of entertainments. They must be short, for it is better to have the king ask for another than to have him fall asleep in the middle of a set. And they must be perfect, for you are in the service of the king.

These are four of those entertainments. They serve up all the styles of the old king's long life, they admit only of beauty and majesty.

This is not the music of our times, and it is not likely to be appreciated or enjoyed within the context of our times. If you permit, Sr Savall and his small band of players will take you back three hundred years, and give you those moments the old king had.

    They are moments worth having.

    5 out of 5 stars Sublime Savall..........2005-04-13

once again Maestro Savall proves himself and his cosmopolitan band of collaborators to be without peer. Perfect for studying, dinner parties, or even fooling around ;) this disc is a must have.

Jordi Savall deserves our sincere thanks for restoring to the world the hithertoo forgotten gems of early music. From the music Charles V would've listened to to this luscious and sublime offering of Couperin's concerts for the Sun King, I am grateful this Catalan genius is continueing to share the fruits of his warmhearted detective work with the world at large.

Pick it up today, don't delay and check out ALL of Alia Vox's efforts too. In a world marred by violence allow Jordi Savall and his team to take you back to a time that seems more civilized, more tolerant and can still help us remember that music knows neither creed nor boundary and can make us all rejoice.

Whether or not you saw the film Tous les matins du monde, you owe it to yourself to either discover or revisit its soundtrack, which features the music of two great figures of 17th-century France: Saint Colombe and his pupil Marin Marais. Saint Colombe, about whom little is known, was a great viol player who was acclaimed for his improvisations. Marais became a member of the famed court orchestra under Lully (some of whose music also appears on the disc) at a very young age. One of the joys of this recording is the sound of the bass viol, an instrument rarely played by itself, especially in such a virtuoso manner. Jordi Savall is the undisputed modern master of the instrument, and he shows us why on this program. As an added bonus, two outstanding vocal pieces are sung with endearing purity, flawless technique, and impeccable intonation by two perfectly matched sopranos. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Music and Performance!.......2001-12-30

Easily the best recorded version of a personal favorite: Marin Marais' fabulous "Sonnerie de Ste Genvieve..." The imagery of the relentlessly ringing bells is so vivid that you imagine yourself directly under the bell tower!

The entire album is spiritual and rewarding in all aspects - performed with virtuosic furor blending into the most serene of moments in the most seamless manner.

I did not see the motion picture, but I truly wish I had. What joy this music brings!

    5 out of 5 stars Obra maestra.......2001-08-10

Este CD y la película cambiaron mi vida. Es una obra maestra, el clima generado por el director y la viola de Jordi Savall hacen una fiesta para el oído de todo el que escuche. Es un CD que no hay que dejar de oir ni una película para dejar de ver.

5 out of 5 stars From garden hut to royal palace.......2001-01-23

Once there was a website titled: "Jordi Savall is God!". The site has disappeared, but it's hard not to have sympathy with that viewpoint. Introduced to Savall through this CD, it made me an immediate fan. A strained budget fails to cease the slow but steady accumulation of his music. Still, it is this CD which is brought off the shelf most often, to be enjoyed without reservation.

There has been more than a little grizzling among viola da gamba buffs over Jordi's role in arranging the music for this film. Most of it seems to be pure envy at Savall's scholarship and performing abilities. If nothing else, owning this CD will lead you to a world of beautiful music. That world might even prompt you to listen to others performing the same pieces, each presenting it in their own way.

For those who know the story, the film and the music pivot around the life of Monsieur de Sainte Colombe. A figure of historical mystery, still unidentified, what is known of his life comes from a journal kept by Marais. Grieving for his lost wife, he retired to a hut at the bottom of his garden. Rumour had it he was visited by his wife's ghost, who critiqued his compositions. Sainte Colombe added a new string to the viola, drastically changing the character of the instrument, extending its range and depth. Sainte Colombe was a master composer for the instrument. And Jordi Savall unmatched in his performance of the music.

Savall, of course, has virtually resurrected Monsieur Sainte Colombe's music from the obscurity of the specialist's interest. Now, his melodious renditions are to be found in any classical store shelf. Savall's interpretations, however, remain the pinnacle all other performers aspire to match. This CD has set a standard for 17th Century music renditions. If you are the least interested in the period, the music and/or the range of qualities Sainte Colombe introduced when he added that seventh string to the instrument, this CD is a mandatory beginning. Just be aware that while Jordi Savall may not be [g]od, his music is divine. It will take you to a blissful paradise of sound that you can enjoy again and again. You will never regret buying this disk.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and ethereal work!.......2005-03-30

THis album is as stunning and beautiful as the film. The operatic works and the pieces for Viol are absolutely some of the best. Jordi Savall is wonderful.
