Dario Costello flourished in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Despite the excellence and importance of his music, almost nothing is known about him personally. Even in his choice of titles - Sonate concertate in stil moderno - Castello demonstrates his confidence in presenting compositions written in an advanced concertato style. In his second book, Castello demonstrates his ability to combine virtuosic writing for instruments with a variety of contrasts in sonority and compositional style. The formal ideas often point to a latent sonata form as well as to a formal balance conceived in genuinely musical ways. The importance of this collection and its dissemination among contemporaries, as witnessed by the reprints in Venice and Amsterdam in 1658, stand in almost inexplicable contrast to the scarcity of biographical information concerning its composer.

Probably like most people I hadn't heard of Dario Castello until I chanced upon this CD.

So much for modern style sonate Concertantes, these are very pleasing sonatas orchestrated for a variety of instruments, and which are easy on the ear but not overly simple. I particularly like the brass passages with the echoed responses in the latter half of the disc. The mix of instruments gives the music a distinct sound which belies its' period.

    This is a delightful mixture of Italian baroque pieces from mostly lesser known composers. The choice of pieces and their arrangement on the disc is very well done, giving a fine balance of many assorted instruments from the Purcell quartet and the excellent HMS&C (not to forget Wooley). This is the one of those discs that makes you wonder why there aren't more concept albums around, except that most of them aren't as accomplished as this effort.

    My only complaint is a personal one, based on unpleasant religious associations connected to the sound of a solo organ (triggered by only two pieces in the collection). These are apparently shared by my wife, because during the toccata she shouted out from her office "I feel like I'm in church..!". That apart, it's great...

        This is quite simply the best recording of music for the cornetto I have discovered. Everything comes together on this recording: the selection of this fascinating repertoire; the vivacity of the performances, which realise every gesture with astonishing theatricality; perfect ensemble and above all the exquisite sound of Jean Tubery playing cornett and mute cornett (the Sonata seconda per due soprani is a real delight). His reading of the Sonata seconda per soprano solo is possibly the best ever. A fantastic sense of architecture is maintained through this recording which never lets the listener go. This is the best of the Ricercar discs 'The Heritage of Monteverdi', but the others are worthy of attention too.
        Extremely highly recommended.
