A really great disc.......2000-03-29

When I saw Symbiosis at the shop I only knew that Simon Phillips was a drummer. I really did not know anything further. Now I believe that Simon Phillips is one of the greatest drummers I ever heard. Besides he has a particular virtue... he does not try to impress, he just plays what the song really needs.

SIMON STRETCHES OUT.......1998-11-04

This CD is a great find for all musicians listening to contemporary jazz. The level of musicianship is very high. Simon Phillips is, of course, just fantastic. On this, his third solo effort, he turns off the sequencers and does it all with real musicians. The ensemble contains the core from Force Majeure - Anthony Jackson, Ray Russle and adds Mitch Forman and various percussionists. Several of the compositions seem to have more body than Simon's earlier work without losing any of the Simon signature fireworks. Absolute must for any drummer. I would have given it 5 stars but I would reserve that rating for aclassics like 'A Love Supreme" or 'Kind of Blue' and so forth>

Amazing work...rewarding experience!.......2006-12-05

Why this one has been out of print for so long is a mystery.
This is a complex symphony, a real 'symbiosis' of classical and jazz. I must admit it took me a while to get into it. I was too lazy or didnt have the patience at that time. It stands now as one of my favorite piece of music. The 1st movement is absolutely mindblowing. Evans plays and Ogerman's orchestra backing is simply exquisiste.
Too bad this reissue doesnt come with the nice original cover art from 1974 though. Enough words, GET IT!!!!!!!

This neglected work was one I heard just after high school in the mid-1970's. I fell in love with it then, as I was already a huge fan of Bill Evans. What I did not forsee was the integration of the wonderful score and orchestral arrangments by Claus Ogerman and Evans' playing, including long passages on the Fender Rhodes electric piano. I had thought of the Rhodes as a "fusion" instrument, where fusion implies rock + jazz, but this is more classical music + jazz = Symbiosis! I lost the vinyl record but just got the CD through Amazon. Unfortunately there are no liner notes, so other than knowing it is the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, I don't know who is playing bass and drums. If you know, please post a message, ok?

Symbiosis.......2004-09-16

This is one of my favorite jazz recordings, it is a masterpiece. I don't understand why it doesn't stay in print. It is different from many other Bill Evans' recordings because of course it has all of the orchestration to answer Mr. Evans' brilliant and austere poetry.

Third stream classic!.......2003-02-06

This cd is really amazing. Claus Ogermann's compositions and arranging are top notch, and the music touches on some of Evans' past piano work with George Russell and Miles Davis. The 2nd movement's track 4 is truly one of my favorite Bill Evans performances. The space he creates while playing with such stark emotion is simply breathtaking.

The cd as a whole sounds great, and all of the pieces are excellent. The 2nd movement is more what Evans was exploring at the time, very introspective, while the 1st movement reminds me of the George Russell albums that Evans played a prominent role on. Also, this trio of his is really shortchanged by a lot of people. Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell are simply fantastic on this cd. I would put this cd in my top 5 Bill Evans albums of all time!!

Maybe the best piece of music no one's heard of........1999-05-07

I first stumbled across this album in the mid '70s while in college. I was ecstatic to find it available now on CD. The melding of Bill Evans' impeccable piano and keyboard interpretations with the innovative orchestration (basically a classic orchestra plus jazz rhythm section and winds) produced a work of art I've never tired of listening to. Claus Ogermann's score is at times mesmerizing, and the final climax and release is as satisfying as any work of music I can think of. The only negative I can cite is a few slightly sloppy passages in the wind instruments, but really only to the degree that it feels like a live performance (i.e. not significant enough for me to give less than a 5-star rating).

Buy this CD!.......2003-06-05

This is a fantastic CD by a group that released only two disks, "Clandestine Electronic Subculture" and "Meta." (Where are they now?) The CD is mastered as a continuous mix, running the gambit from Biosphere-influenced ambient (circa Microgravity) to breakbeat techno. "Modus Operandi" parts 2 and 1 are a tour de force of subtle percussion shifts, synth washes, Basic Channel-influenced synth riffs, bleating sheep, and processed machinery noise. I too bought this CD on a whim, and rate it as one of my favorite electronica recordings, period. If this were a prog recording, it would remind me of Porcupine Tree circa "The Sky Moves Sideways" or "Signify."

my favorite eletronic album.......2002-09-27

this is the best eletronic music album i own, and i have plenty. i discovered it randomly in a record shop on Haight Street, and gave it a chance. never been so glad to have bought an album on a whim. i can't believe these guys haven't become superstars. i really hope they put out another album.

an extremely hard-to-find gem.......2002-06-21

in 1997 a friend at my work let me borrow this cd. the music just stuck in my mind, although i was just beggining to appreciate "electronica". it took me 3 years later to finally buy it. its very much an ambient type mix sort of like Hybrid's Original Finished Symphony. the music has a very chill out mood to it. this cd is just very beautifull. i also have another of thier albums( i dont know how many they had) its called Meta. I wish their cds were not out of print, i know that many would applaude this cd as well if they had it. "this is not art for arts sake, this is more like spiritual technology..."

Dark Electronic Music.......2001-12-02

i bought this CD late '97 and been looking to buy a copy since someone never returned mine back in 98. . FINALLY. i have to agree with the first reviewer, this album is a work of art. i also want MODUS OPERANDI, another of theirs. for some reason these are rare albums to get a hold of.

Unbelievable, moving, inspirational, incredible........2001-08-24

My first exposure to Symbiosis was a 12" LP that was out of print and heavily played. Amazingly, 2 years later I come across this, their full LP!

The best way to describe these guys is: Ambient, Deep Jungle, Hard Trance, Spacey break-beat and Trancey down-tempo. Seem like a crazy mix? It is, and they pull it off with amazing beauty and elegance.

This is, by far, my favorite CD of all time. It is still in my heavy rotation list, after 3 years!

The entire cd flows from song to song (like a mix cd) but within their own control and style. Its almost impossible to tell where one song ends and another begins.

Awesome long mixes that range from dancy to trancy. Everything changes over time. Great stuff. Everytime I listen to it I lose myself in the mix and it is over before I know it. Probably hard to find now -- get it if you can!
