Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description
Two time GRAMMY winning instrumental acoustic Guitarist Laurence Juber's "I've Got The World On Six Strings" is a salute to one of the greatest composers of the last century: Harold Arlen. Juber's GRAMMY winning arrangement of "The Pink Panther Theme" from "Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar" and his award winning "LJ Plays The Beatles" have firmly established him as not only a great player but a great arranger of classic songs and this recording takes that one step further.
Customer Reviews:
Great Guitar Work on a Great Collection of Classic Tunes.......2007-05-10
While his choice of tunes may have surprised his fans, Juber really delivers the goods. As with earlier releases by Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, this CD will introduce a whole new audience to these classic melodies.
For another look at this material on solo guitar, see Acoustic Standards Volume 1 and Acoustic Standards Volume 2 by Rick Kuncicky, an amazing fingerstyle/classical guitarist with a wide range of influences from Chet Atkins & Charlie Byrd to Earl Klugh & Guy Van Duser, but with a fresh style that's all his own.
Very nice but far from his best.......2007-01-10
Laurence Juber is truly a world-class fingerstyle guitarist.
This effort is further evidence of LJ's talent, class, and work ethic.
Each of these pieces was written by "Great American Songbook" tunesmith Harold Arlen. Check out these titles! I especially enjoyed the arrangement of "Stormy Weather." NPR uses Laurence's recordings now and then; maybe they can opt for this one when they're reporting a down market!
He keeps topping himself! .......2007-01-08
As perhaps the current generations top fingerstyle player/composer...Laurence jubers arrangements of Beatles classics at the start of the decade "LJ Plays The Beatles" took us fans of instrumental acoustic guitar by storm! A few years later LJ as he's known answered Sir McCartney's request to turn his arranging skills loose on "One Wing"...and found a depth in some tunes many of us had written off as pop fluff.
On the heels of his GRAMMY winning arrangement of "the Pink Panther Theme" by Henry Mancini....Juber opened up one of the greatest songbooks of the century for "I've Got The World On Six Strings"...which features is solo guitar arrangements of some of the most beloved Harold Arlen songs!
Its hard to pick a favorite..the opening track "I've Got The World On a String" bounces along quite nicely and the following "Get Happy" is down right propulsive. Juber plays around the melody on track 3 before launching into an arrangement of "If I Only Had a Brain" that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and have guitarists looking for the inevitable transcription! Stormy Weather finds Juber exploring his bluesier picking with predictably excellent results. Over the Rainbow is heartbreakingly beautiful and ...well I don't want to rave about every song...go to iTUNES and download or pick it up...you won't be sorry...
This, Like LJ Plays the Beatles, will thrill guitarists and the non-guitarists in the audience equally!
oh..and the sound is fanatastic...like he's sitting in your living room!

Customer Reviews:
Great Collection; Beautiful Piano.......2005-09-09
BEGINNINGS by Fernando Ortega is a 2 cd set featuring selections of some of the "early" recordings of this great pianist primarily drawn from four albums: Meditations of the Heart, Meditations of the Heart Encore, Hymns and Meditations, and Night of Your Return. While many of these cds are available for purchase online, it is nearly impossible to find them in your typical Christian music store.
Of the thirty-four songs on the album, seventeen are instrumental.
Songs from Meditations of the Heart include: Sacrifice of Praise, Living Water, Morning Star, Family, I Love To Praise Your Name, and As For Us. (Six of the ten songs on the album)
Songs from Meditations of the Heart Encore include: I Remember Well, It's Your Love, Tossed On The Wind, Teach Me Thy Way, and Creation Sings. (Five of the eleven songs on the album).
Hymns and Meditations: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Near The Cross, Softly and Tenderly, Nothing But The Blood, and I Need Thee Every Hour/Just As I Am/ Come Ye Sinners Medley, What Wondrous Love Is This, Con Que Pagaremos, Brethren We Have Met To Worship, Sacred Head Now Wounded, and Nearer My God To Thee. (Which appears to be the entire album of Hymns and Meditations)
It also seems to include all the songs on Night Of Your Return as well. (My Song Is Love Unknown, Praise To The Lord, The Almighty, Night Of Your Return, Mi Abuelito, Chimayo, Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Here Is Love, Road Song, Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, This is My Father's World, and Green Pastures.)
With two complete albums and two partial albums, BEGINNINGS is well worth the price and is a great addition for any Fernando Ortega fan's collection.
This piano music is wonderful. His style simple but beautiful.

Great Trumpet Music From Great Composers.......2001-10-01
This CD was great! It has all sorts of cheerful, skilled trumpeting. It has everything from "Flight of the Bumblebee" to "Carnival of Venice" to "Badinerie." My personal favorite is "Carnival of Venice." I also, however, enjoy "Flight of the Bumblebee", "Badinerie," and "Allegro(the second one)." The trumpeting is very nice, and even SOUNDS challenging. The tone quality is perfect, with no static or mistakes in the CD. All in all, I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes trumpet music, anyone who likes good music, or just anyone who likes music.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable music of an unusual sort........2005-10-23
I purchased this CD on a whim because of the fun thought of hearing timpani as a solo instrument. You know, the sort of CD you anticipate listening to just once, except to share with others as a sort of joke?
But the CD has been a real delight with a lot of listenable music.
The opening and closing pieces are by Georg Druschetzky (apparently a famous timpanist of his time). Both are of a typical classical-period style with enjoyable melodies - especially the "Concerto per sei timpani", which even my fifteen year-old daughter agreed was "kinda catchy".
Of course the most fun comes during the various cadenzas (cadenzi?) throughout the CD, where you just grin at the whole idea. But again it comes off well.
My favorite tracks are #16 (Bouree), and #18 (Gigue), both of a baroque Sinfonia by a guy named Johann Chistroph Graupner. These are engaging dances by any standard. I found myself wondering if the Bouree was inspiration for some Wild West type Hollywood music? Surely this repertoire doesn't get out much -grin.
The orchestra, soloist, and recording all struck my ears of good quality as well. But the real joy was from hearing and enjoying a new ensemble. If that sort of thing excites you, you won't be disappointed by this CD.

Brass Players Delight.......2000-10-20
At age 82, a professional musician and brass player since age 12, I consider this as fine an exhibition of trumpet playing as I have ever heard. The music is Bach (i.e., of the master). The orchestra plays well indeed and the recording quality is excellent. And the trumpet playing? It is masterful. Excellent. Simply superb!

Just a Dream CD.......2004-01-25
Wonderful, Liona manages again to make me feel in heaven. What an artist, what a beautiful performance. Can't recall anyone even coming close to her virtuosity.
Performance 5 stars; sound quality 2 stars.......2000-12-02
My first encounter with this recording occurred in 1979 when I acquired it in LP (on a vinyl record for those of you born after 1980) form. I developed a great fondness for it; and I was delighted to discover it now existed in CD format. Delight, unfortunately, soon yielded to disappointment when a few minutes of listening told me that the sound quality of the CD was distinctly inferior to the sound on the LP. Just to make certain, I pulled out the LP once again; and, sure enough, the LP does sound much better. The CD sound is strangled and compressed compared to the open and airy sound of the record; and for some reason there is a noticeable sound of tape hiss on the CD, which is distinctly missing on the LP. The problem: the CD was probably created from second or third generation copies rather than from the original masters. What a shame. I acquired three other Liona Boyd CD's at the same time I got this one; and there are no sonic problems with them. Why did one of her best moments have to be given inferior treatment?
An addictive listen.......2000-07-21
I first heard this music, and an interview with Ms Boyd, on a plane in around 1981. I loved the music and her. I got it as soon as I could and it was often on my turntable. I was delighted to find it on CD. This is a great album. Her playing and the orchestral accompaniment, led by the incomparable Andrew Davis, blend into a CD you'll wear out.
I loved this album.......2000-04-18
Wonderful work..Well done,Liona! Brings me back to a special place....
My favorite album of Liona Boyd.......2000-01-15
I just happen to love Baroque Music, and especially Vivaldi. My collection is quite large, but I consider this one of my treasures. Great sound quality, as always with Liona, and the English Chamber Orchestra backs her up beautifully. A must for every CD collection.

Amazing .......2006-07-04
This is totally amazing. I wish i could play the bass like him, and he uses a German bow, which is less maneuverable than the French bow. A must own for all bassists.
Virtuoso Reality.......2000-04-27
It would be difficult for anybody to follow a recording such as Joel Quarrington's Bottesini Vol.1, but Mr. Quarrington does so and then some. The selection of works on the CD dabbles in several different periods and the Papageno Variations does so all by itself. Every performer on the album plays up to the highest standard, and Mr. Quarrington continues to help push the bass envelope to higher and higher levels.
Truly a virtuoso!.......1999-09-19
The beauty and mystery of Quarrington's technique is partly explained by his unusual and eclectic tuning. His personality shines through, leaving the listener awestruck by his brilliance.
Fantastic CD!.......1999-09-16
This is one of the best bass recordings I have heard. The recording is well produced and the orchestra sounds wonderful in it's accompaniment. The Ziguenerweisen has to be heard to be believed. Most violinists would envy Quarrington's tempo!
