This was the first CD I ever bought, back when CD players were still cutting-edge technology. Now, more than a decade later, I still listen to it regularly.

In fact, this CD ranks as my all-time favorite for playing at ear-bud volume while rocketing down the highway. My apologies to the Seattle police -- and to the millions of kids who will never know that Bach's Motets kick industrial metal's ass (and just about everything else) when it comes to pure emotional transcendence.

Not only is the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, but John Eliot Gardiner has interpreted him in very fine fashion.

Among the works featured in this album are ensemble pieces of four-part harmony, but there are polyphonic sequences, and sequences featuring solo singers.

This is a double disk album, making it especially valuable.

The choir has excellent diction, all in German. There is a strong, clear soprano section enabling a flexible, versatile dynamic range. The basses and tenors are similarly skilled.

Incidental music is unobtrusive and enhances the choral presentation.

The overall effect is awe-inspiring and elevating.

If you love J.S. Bach, if you love choir music, this double CD is an essential purchase. Get a taste, try "Komm, Jesu, Komm". It's built in several parts; each takes you to a higher level, and after the sequence ("du bist der rechte Weg...") which gets me high each time I hear it, the motet ends with a lovely aria. But then, there's so much more to discover here! Gardiner and the Monteverdi choir are the reference level. However, be aware that this CD could suddenly dissappear from the market (in Germany, it has). Don't hesitate: this is a must for all lovers of the b-minor Mass and St. Matthew's Passion where choir music also plays a prominent role.

This a good quality recording of the complete set of Bach's motets. The Scholars Baroque Ensemble does a wonderful job with small forces of fewer than 10, often with one singer per part. A real showcase for the singers' virtuosity. The German diction is quite good, and the interpretations are lively, although some of the ritards at cadences are a bit much. Overall, a real find.

    This version of Bach's motets earns high marks for its sensible tempos and thoughtful--not idiosyncratic--interpretive decisions, including use of continuo cello, violone, theorbo, and organ. Choral lines are distinct, voices are ideally balanced, and phrasing and dynamics are fully respecting of the texts and harmonic texture.       'Bach's motets are among his most perfect works and constitute one of the summits of Western polyphony. Whether they are festive in nature or intended for funeral services, these six pieces for small choir are striking in their extraordinary musical variety, as well as in the perfect fusion of the words and music.'
      Unlike Bach's sacred cantatas, the Passions and the oratorios that were all written as part of Bach's duties as the Cantor of St. Thomas's, the motets were written on commission for specific occasions, and therefore occupy a special place in his output. Moreover, they are distinctly different from other large church compositions, in that they are predomintly vocal in character. Finally , the motets are distinguished by a tendency to the individualism of each separate work. This, of course, can be applied to all of Bach's works, but in other 'sets' of compositions there is more of a pronounced relationship between the individual pieces than in the motets, which are dominated by features peculiar to each one of them. The vocal treatment in the motets is more varied than it is in most of his other music. One reason for this might be that he is attempting to compensate for the absence of obligato instruments that lend so much color and variety to the cantatas, Passions and oratorios.
      The translation for the title of each motet follows: 'Singet dem Herm ein neues Lied' (Sing unto the Lord a new song)- 'Der geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf' (Likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities)- 'Jesu meine Freude'(Jesu,my joy)- 'Furchte dich nicht' (Fear not)- 'Komm, Jesu, komm' (Come, Jesu,come)- 'Lobet den Herm, alle Heiden' (Oh praise the Lord, all ye nations).
      Rene Jacobs has done his usual great job of pulling this altogether into one cohesive rendition. The singers are outstanding and perform their solos, etc. with accomplished artistry. I expecially liked the tenor voice of Gerd Turk; his sound is so resonant and clear which makes for a neatly done Bach aria. All in all it's a great Bach experience.

      Everything about this CD is a winner. Time and again this superb German choir proves itself to be the ultimate in this genre. Clarity of line and diction, purity of sound, apt style and expressiveness, impeccable intonation and technique, they have got it all. If a whole CD of choral music scares you off, then you have to try this one. There is not a hint of monotony or overkill. You won't want it to end. These gifts from Bach could not sound any fresher or more appealing.

        Cantus Cölln is the first group to record these six motets one-voice-per-part, and the approach pays off nicely. These pieces are difficult rhetorically as well as musically; a small group of singers can be more flexible and subtle than even a skilled chorus. Konrad Junghänel takes the joyful double-choir motets Singet dem Herrn and Der Geist hilft at a joyfully quick tempo, yet the music never turns to mush, no matter how dense the writing gets. Conversely, he captures the somber mood of Komm, Jesu, komm and the funeral motet Jesu, meine Freude without ever sounding ponderous. (While this is an exemplary performance, those who want an actual choir should try Philippe Herreweghe and his luminous Collegium Vocale on Harmonia Mundi.) --Matthew Westphal

        5 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt's Finest Hour, and Teldec's.......2002-01-17

        Despite having gone through hundreds of recordings in my life, only three Teldec recordings have stayed in my collection, and two of those are by Nikolas Harnoncourt. One of these, "Don Giovanni" highlights, falls in the "good enough" category. The other, this recording of the Bach Motets, falls into the "as good as it gets" category, and I have often wondered why its virtues are not imitated on other discs.

        It would be impossible to overpraise this recording. The Stockholm Bach-Choir is small and exceedingly supple in its singing, and the performance is delicately nuanced in its fine attention to the details and potentials in the music. The counterpoint is so clear and the layers of effects so transparent that at times it seems unbelievable that all that you hear could really be in there. Somehow, at various times, the singers manage to suggest that they are a pipe organ or symphony orchestra!
        And overall, the performance has a warmth and loveliness that I don't ordinarily associate with Harnoncourt. The sound is superb and spacious, revealing no annoying noises no matter what I listen to the disc on.

          4 out of 5 stars The best presentation of the motet texts yet!.......2005-06-19

          These works present (for me, anyway) a very new interpretation of great music I've loved for a long time. I learned the beauties of Luther's translations by singing these Bach settings, and have always honored the performances that let Luther's power and weight flow forth, driven home by the powerful style of Bach's biggest organ masterpieces. But these performances are different. A bit up-tempo, a bit brighter in the building acoustics, the women's voices a bit more up-front, and suddenly they're conversational, contemporary--actual thoughts, blessed by Luther's words and Bach's harmonies, instead of being mere display-frames for the sounds. It's in some ways a fuller, more complete performance than I've ever heard before. And I think neither Bach nor Luther ever intended their work to get in the way of the texts they worked with, making this reading more authentic, more in line with their intent, than any I've ever heard (or attempted).

          I can't quite give it full marks, on technical grounds, because there is just a bit of raggedness to the choir. Their brisk tempo leaves me, personally, baffled at how they could possibly pack in Bach's great countermelodies and Luther's great strophes, but they do, largely, and the rhythms return closer to speech than worship of the harmonies and vowels. But like speech, there's an occasional splatter of voices hitting the same word not quite together. And the brighter acoustics, while allowing the clear articulations at a more rapid pace, do lose some of the sonorities.

          But still, if I mark this performance down a shade for these weaknesses, I equally wish now I could go back and ding all those others I've loved, just a touch, for not catching the sense of the text in the way that this one does!
