The city of New Orleans is known for having spawned musicians of every stripe, but all too often the classical world is overlooked in a swirl of jazz and roots rock. An impressive debut opera CD from native New Orleanian tenor serves as a stirring reminder that the Crescent City has much more to give.

On this self-titled disc, Fernando del Valle, records several of his most successful stage roles and presents a beautiful collection of opera standards. The material here is well-known and much loved, but del Valle's superb technical singing skills and deft reading of both his characters and their situations infuse the music with new life. A veteran of dozens of American and European productions, del Valle brings a refreshingly straightforward and quiet tenderness to "Che gelida manina" of Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme.

On the other hand, del Valle's voice does not lack power, as evinced in the opening notes of "Tombe degl'avi miei" from Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Other selections of note include a heart-rendering selection from Charles Gounod's Faust and the opening serenade "Siciliana" from Pietro Mascagni's fiery Cavalleria Rusticana.

The range del Valle exhibits on this CD hints that the best is still to come.
