4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Themes.......2006-09-11

This is an awesome collection of unsettling melodies from the masters, not just some horror movie themes (though it does have some Psyco). You will end up playing a round of "Where have I heard that score before?" because these melodies are very iconic.
The only complaint is that the track listing is somewhat occult. One has to use amazon.com's track listings and fill in the numbers.
Still, this is a great buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!.......2006-05-18

I would like to begin my review of this wonderful CD by stating that I am not a "kid." (unless you consider a 14-year-old to still be a child) I am, however, too lazy too start a new Amazon.com account before typing about this great CD.

Now then... In my eyes, this CD recieved 5 stars because of (what else!) the music. The quality of the music to be more specific. The sound of it was great and the selection of the pieces was pure genius. My personal favorite would have to be a three-way tie between Bach's Toccata and Fugue, Dukas' Sorceror's Apprentice, and Stravinsky's The Right of Spring.

I will leave you tonight with one final thought... Is it just me, or are most of the pieces from "Fantasia"? At least 7 (!) of the pieces are from that age-old classic. I think it's funny that they are on a collection such as "The Most Frightening Music in the Universe". And could the cover art be any worse?!

All in all it is a great CD to add to any collection. (and cheap!) Thanks!

    5 out of 5 stars uncomparable.......2007-02-14

The bravura, power, strenth, energy, virtuosity of the pianio in Khachaturian concerto is simply unbeliveble. Surprisingly to me, there are also moments full of poetry and nostalgia in second part.
And the orchesta with the Kusewicki - this is really strong support, and - despite the age of the recording - the details are quite well audible (I know Naxos edition, they made wonders!)
    Simply amazing!
One of the greatest piano concerto recording I have ever heard (not the same with the concerto). Two great artists inspired to its heights by each other!
To comparision I know only another version of the piece - with Kapell again - the one with Ormady. The orchestra is not as marvelous as Boston.

This is one of the the best Khachaturian and Prokofiev recordings ever!

5 out of 5 stars The Kachaturian Piano Concerto belongs to William Kapell!.......2004-10-27

Please do not waste your time and money searching another other performance of Kachaturian . This is by far , the supreme jewel in the musical universe since its first release in 1945 in vynil .
Kapell simply was far beyond of being inspired , he threw over the concert and literally explored every little detail , you will feel the anxiety , the nostalgia , the delirium , the caucasion moods , the unbetable rage and the most passionated lyricism ever made in this concert .
And despite Koussevitzky with The Boston Symphony makes a great team . This orchestra , gifted with such tonal color , his strings and brass ; cellos and counterbass , winds and metals were simply a real tour de force .
The rapport was inmediat and this recording became in the hitherto of the Kachaturian Piano Concerto .
Believe me I ve heard this work since 1973 and not least than three hundred times . Its frenetic intensity , its febrile majesty and vibrating erotism is absolutely overpowered .
The Prokoviev is very interesting though I find it too fast in the first movement and somehow this hyperkinetism may work out if you do not know for instance the Samson Francois version in which S.F. articulates lyricism and powerful .
But despite this last commentary about the Third , the record is fundamental for you to acquire the essential and more astonishing performance of this Concerto .

    5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2004-06-05

William Kapell on this CD played with an incomparible fire. Both piano concertos are beautifull pieces and were fully realized on this album as great works of music.

Sensual Classics must have been a hit, particularly the cover photo of a man and woman undressing one another. For here we have Sensuous Classics II, complete with a book of eight more make-out photos sprawled over 10 foldout panels. There are no liner notes (no room, I guess). Again, the selections are absurd and the performance standard uneven. From the first note, Lawrence Foster's performance with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 goes limp, if you'll pardon the expression. By contrast, Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with soprano Arlene Auger and the cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic is bold and sensuous and memorable. --Gwendolyn Freed

3 out of 5 stars good selection -- not bad performances.......2002-10-03

I agree with the previous reviewers that these are well selected pieces, at least if the standard is potentially to set the mood for romance. I have listened to this album a number of times and find the performances quite adequate -- I disagree that the perforamnces are bad. The roster of who is performing the pieces is not a lot of folks generally considered to be slouches. If these are bad performances, I think a lot of people would have trouble recognizing good performances.

The one thing I find really disappointing about this album is its price, which I find very high for a compilation album. For bettervalue, I would suggest looking for some of the many "adagio" albums that Polygram puts out that have 2 well-filled CDs with very nice selections of generally quiet, relaxing, romantic music (a good one is "Evening Adagios").

Better yet, buy some albums on the Naxos label... that have some of the pieces on any of these compilations and listen to all of the pieces on each CD. You'll get good value for your money and hear a lot of very good music too!

2 out of 5 stars Good selection, poor performance........1999-08-23

I picked up this CD because it seemed to be a great selection of my favorite romantic classical tunes. I found the performances to be poor overall, however I was indeed pleased with the selection.

This CD might be considered a bargain if you are looking for performances from most of the all-time favorites. But for quality performances, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Shostakovich amazing, Barber painful.......2002-04-06

These are two of the greatest violin concertos ever written, separated chronologically by not much time, but worlds apart in sound and color. Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is an energetic soloist, a trait which emerges in the faster movements of each piece. The second and fourth movements of the Shostakovich concerto are played here with wild exuberance, and are absolutely dazzling to listen to. The first movement and passacaglia are given the treatment they deserve, played with at times a dark brooding sound, and at times a stark melancholy. Her playing seems perfectly suited to this work overall, and this perhaps rivals even Vengerov's great recording (coupled with Prokofiev's first concerto). The lyrical passages of the Barber, on the other hand, are so full of vulgar swells and cheesy slides that I couldn't even listen all the way through the first movement. All melodic line is abandoned in order to make "moments" that don't really even happen. You'll find better performances of this concerto just about anywhere you look (I'd especially recommend Stern's old recording with the NY Phil). The Shostakovich is worth the price of the disc, but if you're familiar with the Barber concerto, you'll find yourself fast-forwarding through the first three tracks more often than not.

3 out of 5 stars Nadia -a victim of poor recording techniques.......2001-07-16

I have seen Nadia perform live on more than one occasion, and she was unforgettable; nevertheless, her artistry is invisible here. EMI's attempts invite harsh criticism. The recording lacks ambiance, depth, and tonal quality. Nadia's violin shrinks to the background, and a restricted orchestra struggles to overcome this limited engineering. Even the soloist herself turns in a subpar performance, lacking conviction when she needs it most. Why oh why, can I not find Nadia on a different label such as Phillips or Erato, or better yet, Well Tempered Productions (HDCD) -then we would hear something truly moving.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2000-05-03

This is a great recording of two breathtaking violin concertos. The first movement is both lyrical and playful, and Salerno-Sonnenberg brings out these two sides of the movement beautifully. She plays the second movement, a slow, gorgeous melody very well. The third movement, which was considered too difficult to play by the violinist for whom it was commissioned, is insanely fast, very intense, yet almost sarcastically so, and is a lot of fun! Sonnenberg plays it very well. In this interest of saving my time writing this and your time reading this, I won't comment as much on the Shostakovich, but rest assured that she plays it fantastically!

5 out of 5 stars like they were written for Nadja.......1999-04-11

Both these Concertos are well suited to Nadja's wild yet focused temperament. The Barber written in 1936 doesn't give away its date the way some works do. The overwhelming passionate lyricism was Barber's creative genius. The work has its give and take, the beautiful melody of the "First Movement" is something you never forget your entire life. Nadja here fines an emotive center adding just the right amount of herself without being overly sentimental. That is the danger in Barber's music you need always to search for an emotive center and distance yourself. It is still modern music despite its 19th Century affinities. The ending "Toccata" is indeed dangerous yet the perpetual motion is handled here like a goddess above the fury. Shostakovich as well Nadja adds a refinement to the dark pages here.

      5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly passionate interpretation!.......1999-01-27

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg exhibits her skills to the utmost while interpretating the brooding, romantic Shostakovich concerto and the lively, elfin Barber concerto with passion Viktoria Mullova was unable to display. The youngest winner of the 1981 Naumberg Competition, Salerno-Sonnenberg has again proven in this recording that she is a formidable player; a player possibly unmatched by any other current players (Perlman, Midori, and Shaham included). She is worthy of undaunting praise from all. Her expulsion from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music set aside, one can instantly see that Salerno-Sonnenberg had some of the best professional help available to her. Her career continues to burgeon, and it is interesting to see what future accomplishments she is awarded.

5 out of 5 stars An Ideal Pairing of the Extremes of Shostokovich's Symphonic Statements.......2006-07-06

Though the mighty symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich stand solidly on their own as musical compositions, the underlying Russian history that is mirrored in the times in which each symphony was composed sheds even more light on the non-musical content. The rarely performed Symphony No. 2 in B flat major was not listed as a symphony as such on the original score title page: instead it is called 'To October - A Symphonic Dedication'. The work is a strange one, full of experimental sonorities including a brooding, almost choral sounding opening movement, a second movement which begins with a trio for solo violin, clarinet and bassoon soon mutating to a full blown cacophony of winds versus strings, a factory whistle blast (horns and trombones) serves as introduction for the choral movement, 'To October'. While the opening of the work challenges the 'new decadent Western music', the choral ode is richly tonal, the chorus singing about the begging for work and bread until Lenin brought the October Revolution and an end to suffering on the part of the peoples of Russia - clearly composed to satisfy the political demands of the regime in power. It works! Mariss Janssons conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is a deeply moving performance.

Symphony No. 12 in D minor (The Year 1917 - in Memory of Lenin) is far more familiar to audiences and though it, too, references the influence of Lenin on the Russian the work does not rely on words or chorus nor does it separate into movements. The sections - 'Revolutionary Petrograd', 'Razlif' (Lenin's hiding place in a peasant's hut), 'Aurora' (the battle ship that signaled the beginning of the October Revolution), and 'The Dawn of Humanity' - are played without separation. The themes and development are mature Shostakovich and the effect of the work is overpowering, calling for a very large orchestra. Janssons conducts the work with all of the nuances and subtleties balanced with the heroic power of the work. It is a fine performance and an even finer CD with such thought as to pairing these two associated Lenin symphonies that have such different ways of addressing the same event! Grady Harp, July 06

Mstislav Rostropovich was a friend of the composer, and his performances of the 15 Shostakovich symphonies are uniquely authoritative. It's true that as a conductor the great cellist has had his ups and downs, but unlike so many far less musical personalities, he has only recorded the music that he feels most passionately about, and the results have been generally impressive. His performances of Symphonies Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14 are really among the best ever, and there isn't as single performance among the rest that isn't at least very good. The National Symphony Orchestra of Washington in particular plays with real guts and conviction. An essential set for fans of the composer. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A Historically Significant Box Set with Lasting Significance.......2004-10-03

This set of 12 CDs is a recording of all fifteen symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich by the cellist/conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. Not only is this survey of Shostokovich's very important symphonic output one of the few times we are able to listen to all the symphonies with as few variables as possible, allowing us to truly hear the course of thought and creativity and turmoil of Shostokovich, but it also fulfills a promise between the composer and his pupil (Rostropovich) to create this project. Rostropovich premiered some of these symphonies and had direct instruction from the composer as to the interpretation of them all. All of these facts make this a compendium of recordings that belong in the libraries of music lovers devoted to the genius of Shostakovich.

Now if only the individual performances were as solid as the project itself! While we may be hearing these works with the knowledge that the composer sanctioned them, they are variable in success. Part of this is due to the variable quality of sound the conductor elicits from the three orchestras involved (the National Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Members of the Academic Symphony Orchestra Moscow). The tempi are less successful than those chosen by better conductors performing these works today, and the usual degree of excitement obtained by other batons is missing. But the performances of all 15 symphonies are never less than interesting and are indeed at times illuminating. In all, this is an important body of recordings and belongs in collections of all those who appreciate the significance of Dmitri Shostakovich.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing performance of the 14th.......2001-08-10

I currently own 5 versions of the 14th symphony (Kondrashin, Bernstein, Barshai (a relay of the preimiere in Moscow), Haitink, and another Rostropovich version on the Russian Revelation label. The Bernstein is saggy and contrived, the Haitink fails to excite, the earlier Rostropovich is in terrible audio, The Kondrashin is excellent and full of white heat, and the Barshai is even more hair raising.

And where does this version of the 14th belong? Among the very best. This perfomance's soloists were the original soloists Shostakovich intended (Vishnevskaya and Rhestin). The orchestra though different from the primiere is still excellent. When listening to the Haitink, the orchestra plays with emotional reservation. Not the case here

2 out of 5 stars Great set, but Symphony 14 sounds a little off.......2001-07-26

Rostropovich's performance is very good, but I haven't particularly liked the 14th (my favourite!). Comparing this recording to the other two I own (Bernstein with the NY Philarmonic and Haitink with the Concertgebouw -- this last has lyrics in each poem's original language, which I like better), I found the performance sub-par. It seems the orchestra is not performing cohesively during some piano passages.

Also, it is a shame (or should I say a sham) that not all the CDs are sold individually. I tried to buy the series one-by-one across 3 countries (US, Brazil and Chile), and haven't found Symphony No. 7 so far...
