Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent.......2005-02-25

Though Larry Combs is recognized as one of the better clarinetists of the 20th Century this recording does not portray that recognition. The tone is a bit spready and rough around the edges, it lacks the more refined quality of contemporary players like Ricardo Morales or Jon Manasse. In addition the counting in the Scherzo from a Midsummer Night's Dream is a bit off, Combs enters early on the eighth notes preceding the infamous trilled figure. Overall it is refreshing to have a recording of only clarinet excerpts, however this is not the definitive way of playing those same excerpts.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best........2004-07-13

Larry Combs is one of the few completely unprecedented clarinetists out there. There isnt anyone much better than him. He has the most beautiful sound I have ever heard in my life. The tone, articulation, and overall feeling you get from his playing can't be compared to anyone else. Mr. Combs offers helpful, detailed commentary on each orchestral excerpt he plays. It feels like you're in a lesson! The commentary comes from a lifetime of experience and achievement, and is highly legitimate. But the best learning tool is his performance of the excerpts. It's, at the very least, something to try to live up to. Every clarinetist will love this collection. Not to mention, get any CSO recording from the last 25 years and you can hear his amazing sound as principal clarinet. If thats not something to try to live up to, I don't know what is.

4 out of 5 stars Great and informative but not without faults.......2003-06-19

Larry Combs is one of the greatest players to ever play the instrument. His comments on this recording are extremely helpful, concise, and very casual - absolutely no pretention at all. Unfortunately, it wasn't recorded very well. It seems to have been mic'ed too close and with too much reverb. It not only distorts Comb's tone, making it sound more diffuse than he actually sounds, one also gets many extraneous noises from keys clicking to even faint sounds of trucks driving by!

Also, some of the selections are a little out of date. There are certain excerpts that weren't included which show up on more orchestral auditions than some of the ones included. Firebird, Daphnis, Ginastera's Variaciones Concertante, etc. show up on a lot of lists these days.

Regardless, this is an essential educational tool for any serious clarinetist.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful tool for clarinet students of all ages!.......2000-01-05

Complete with dialogue from Larry Combs offering advice on each one of the orchestral excerpts, this CD is a great way to hear one of the world's greatest clarinetist's interpret these famous clarinet passages. I have not come across many clarinet excerpt CD's, and not only is the selection superb on this one, but it is by far one of the best! A must for high school students facing college auditions and even university students, but also great for clarinetists (and music lovers) of all ages!

2 out of 5 stars 79 minutes of "Der Freischütz" recorded live in the 1930s. .......2004-09-15

Internet browsers with long memories and wrinkled brows will probably hope that favorite German singers of the 1930s will be heard at work here and will "show up well". The CD comprises recordings from two performances: one given in Berlin in 1936 conducted by Heinrich Steiner, the other at Salzburg in August 1939 where Hans Knappertsbusch is responsible for some very slow tempi. Whether it is wanted or not, the Overture is here, leaving only 70 minutes to sample the singing. Tiana Lemnitz is absolutely gorgeous in her two arias: the first is not quite complete, and the second, although at an incredibly slow pace, never catches her out of breath. Marcel Wittrisch, a striking mixture of heldentenor and 1930s crooner, is heard here and there though not in Max's Act 1 aria. What we hear of Max in most of Acts 1 and 2 in sung by Franz Völker. Michael Bohnen, to whom all the enclosed notes are dedicated, hams the role of Kaspar. Gerhard Hüsch's honeyed, forthright baritone contributes a few phrases in the Act 3 excerpts. Irma Beilke, as Ännchen, is heard in some lively dialogue and (distantly) about half her second aria.

I hope this satisfies curiosity to some extent and helps collectors make a choice.
