5 out of 5 stars A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26

I purchased these recordings nearly 20 years ago, when Deutsche Gramophone was still selling them as five individual discs, and at over $20 per disc. With the re-release of the set of all five discs in a single, price-reduced "Collectors Edition" box set, the price has fallen by more than half, making this one of the outstanding values for high-quality Bach recordings on today's market.

But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.

Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.

5 out of 5 stars A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21

...and cheap to boot. This, paired with the Brandenburg Concertos/Overtures compilation from Arkiv (also featuring Pinnock and the English Concert), gives any new Bach fan a fairly complete account of Bach's instrumental orchestral output. This particular package includes all of Bach's keyboard concertos (played exceptionally well by Pinnock), all of his violin concertos, and also his Triple Concerto (Harpsicord, Flute and Violin), several works for Oboe and Oboe D'Amour, and several double concertos (2 violins, and oboe and violin). Highlights are the D Minor Harpsicord concerto BWV 1052, the C Major concerto for 2 Harpsicords BWV 1061, the Oboe D'Amour concerto BWV 1055, the double concerto BWV 1060, and the violin concertos.
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.

This is undoubtedly the best Back box set I have heard. These Concerto's for Harsichord, Violin, Flute and Oboe are among the finest in classical music. Although the Harpsichord volume level could have been a bit higher overall the recordings are very good. I am very pleased with this CD set with so much music at a very good price. This is truly a collectors gem.

This set offers unbeatable value. The performances are uniformly excellent. Pinnock's Bach is brisk and sprightly when it should be, but also tender and relaxed when it must be. He is not afraid to slow down and savour the music, unlike many period-performance specialists. He is one of the world's great harpsichordists and his partners in the multiple concerti are also excellent. Simon Standage yields nothing to better-known soloists in the violin concerti.

The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.

While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

Hilary Hahn is certainly one of the best young violinists before the public. Now 23 years old, she has abundantly fulfilled her early promise as a radiantly talented as well as singularly earnest prodigy, and grown into a brilliant violinist and a communicative, arresting performer. On this recording, which features Bach's Violin Concertos in A minor, BWV 1041 and E major, BWV 1042, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor, BWV 1043 and the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor, BWV 1060, her flawless technique and strikingly beautiful, intensely focussed tone are on full display. There is a noble, restrained quality in her playing, so that although her tone-production and vibrato are "modern," her sound has a classical, pristine purity. (By contrast, the orchestral sound, though good, is surprisingly lush - a rather odd discrepancy.) Hahn's interplay with her two excellent partners is close and unanimous in tone and style; the less familiar Concerto for violin and oboe is especially compelling. Unfortunately, Hilary Hahn, despite her serious, thoughtful approach to music, seems to have succumbed to the current trend among today's performers--perhaps symptomatic of the jet-age--to play as fast as their fingers will carry them. The fast movements are taken at such speeds that they lose all their elegance, grace and charm, become prone to false accents, and sound aggressive, hectic and breathless. A performer with less musical integrity might be suspected of just wanting to show off her effortless facility. However, Hahn's musicality, expressiveness and affinity for Bach (she has also recorded the unaccompanied solo violin works on Sony) come through in the slow movements, where the playing is calm, expansive enough for carefully shaped phrases, emotionally concentrated, and simply beautiful. --Edith Eisler

I don't know a whole lot about music, but I do know pure beauty when I hear it, and I own 5 of this delightful young ladies CDs, and this is simply the most beautifal. If you have any taste for classical music, and my collection runs from Guns an Rose to Beethoven, you will love this album. :) Brightest Blessings Hilary, BB.

Like other reviewers, I agree this is way to fast. It's as if, she is just trying to get through these pieces as fast as she can. Like it's like hurry up this is boring, as if she would rather be doing something else. I know that's not what she intended, but to my ears that's what it sounds like. This is the 4th Hilary Hahn CD, that I have purchased. I've liked most of her CD's, but as a result of this recording am beginning to doubt her interpretation of many of these pieces. Like many other reviewers I am not an expert by any means, but I am thinking that being as young as she is affects her interpretation of the music. Maybe I will change my mind later, and maybe I am just used to hearing Bach a certain way who knows? To sum up my feelings, I will say she is an amazing violinist with huge potential, but like any fine wine needs time to mature. Time will tell for me, and maybe for her as well, but for now 3 stars is my verdict.

I don't really know a whole lot about classical music but I came across Miss Hahn's music when I was searching for something to study by. Personally, I find her music addictive and I never get sick of listening to her. I have since experimented with the notion of why I like her so much by comparing her music with other interpretations of the same pieces from Bach and have really come to appreciate her style. Clean, crisp and fresh. A really, really, wonderful violinist!

Some of the other reviewers on this site have made the same comment: that this is too fast. However, the negative reviewers all either sounded like idiots or like snobs with lines like "she misses the poetry of the music". I don't listen to Bach for poetry (what does that even mean?). Bach has groove, and I listen to Bach cause he's got the Groove. And so I thought I'd like it peppy. I usually do. For example, I like Glenn Gould's early recording of the Goldberg Variations, which has also been criticized for being too fast.

But, I didn't like this. At all. I'm not sure if the root of the problem is that it's too fast, but the result is that it's definitely not musical. No groove at all. Even if you liked Hahn's solo Bach, skip this recording. It's really not worth it, even at $9.99. (If you're wondering, one star is for good pitch, and the other is for the slow movement of the Concerto for 2 violins.)

If you want a good recording of the same music, get the 2006 recording of Akiko Suwanai and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. It's got groove and beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Too fast? - let your own ears decide........2006-11-11

I don't mean to purposely stand in contradiction against other reviews; I just felt it was unfair for me to be almost robbed of the musical enjoyment I am having now with this recording, and I want to present another view.

I remember being really inspired when I first saw a video of Hilary Hahn playing the Bach Concerto. However, I was surprised to see so many criticisms regarding the tempo when I went to check out the CD here on amazon.com.

It made me really hesitant about buying the CD. But I found out that it proved to be a mistake for me to be held back into buying this CD because of these criticisms.

I am not a student of classical music nor do I consider myself to be an expert on music criticism; so I do not really know if there is such a thing as a "wrong" tempo in classical music.

Hilary Hahn has written in the linear notes regarding how she wanted this piece to be lively and to inspire others to dance to the fast movements. This reflects her personality and I think she has succeeded in achieving that vision. As far as her own musical vision is concerned, I don't think anyone can say she missed it or contradicted herself.

I own this CD for some time now and I have been listening to it enough to say that the tempo is not an issue for me. I think Hilary pulled it off nicely. I have gone out to listen to other interpretations, but I eventually found Hilary Hahn's and Oistrakh's interpretations to be my favorites. (Grumiaux's interpretation also comes close - do check it out!) The tone and execution really shines - Everything fits together beautifully like a well-crafted piece of furniture. There is evidence of tremendous thought into the phrasing, but when you are listening to the music, all that disappears, you just know Hilary really enjoyed herself while playing this piece. It is inspiring.

I am not discrediting the other reviews and the opinions of others - they have a valid opinion and they are entitled to it. All I'm saying is this: do listen to it before you buy this CD and make a judgment for yourself. Do not rob yourself of the joy of enjoying music that YOU like.

Let me center my remarks on the 2nd piano concerto. May I say, with pun intended, this performance is "2nd to none!". I have had a few versions of the 2nd piano concerto over the past fifty years. In those years I might have listened to no more than three times. Never has this music "grabbed" my ear. THIS PERFORMANCE HAS CAUSED ME TO LISTEN TO IT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH SINCE RECEIVING IT.

It's true. Pletnev can really capture the passion when playing the piano. And with this 2-disc set of Tchaikovsky's piano concertos, you can't go wrong with anything.

The First Piano Concerto is by far one of the finest I've ever heard, along with the versions including pianists Daniel Barenboim and Constantine Orbelian. Maestro Fedoseyev and the Philharmonia Orchestra do a stupendous job of backing up Pletnev. There are no wrong notes, no over-blaring of the brass, and best of all, no overpowering the lyrical sounds of the piano. The finale in the third movement might be a bit too quick, but it doesn't matter, as long as this rendition of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto gives out a strong and inspired performance.

The Concert Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra is an attention-grabber. It sounds serene and melodic, the typical Tchaikovsky. It is less well-known than P. Concerto no. 1, but it has the same russian flair for expression. The solo in the first movement is to die for, and the second movement has its special charm of taking people's breath away. An A+ for this one.

Hearing the original version of the 2nd P. Concerto instead of the Siloti version has given me mixed feelings. For the good, the violin and cello solos in the 2nd movement are touching, and the piano and orchestra are in top form. For the bad, the tempi seems to be very random at some points. The fast parts, for example, don't seem very fast at all.

Since I don't listen to the unfinished 3rd that much, I don't have anything to say about it. All in all, the sound quality is super, and the low price is exceptional. It's a must buy.

The Concerto No.2 is NOT the bowdlerized Siloti edition--not only does the label clearly state that the original edition is played, but the violin and cello solos removed from the Siloti edition are clearly audible to anyone who has really listened to this recording. I don't even LIKE Concerto No.1, and this performance bowled me over--highly recommeded--and, at this price, an absolute STEAL!

Mr. Perkins is absolutely wrong about this set! In the first place, Concerto No.2 is NOT the hatcheted Siloti edition--did Mr. Perkins listen to this recording at all? Not only does the label clearly state that Concerto No.2 IS the original version, but the violin and cello solos missing from the Siloti edition are clearly present in Pletnev's recording! I highly recommend this set to anyone--I don't even LIKE Concerto No.1, but I found myself bowled over by this performance!

Pletnev hits all the notes, but misses the Russian soul and the Romantic fire. The performance of the Second Piano Concerto in particular is, at best, a train running willy-nilly downhill (seemingly without a conductor--not to mention that it's the hatcheted Siloti edition). I suppose I have been spoiled for any other versions of the concerti by listening to the absolutely miraculous interpretations by Igor Zhukov and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (now sadly out of print). It's a good thing this set is relatively inexpensive, because then I felt no qualms about simply throwing it away.

This album still delights after more than three decades. Arthur Grumiaux's brilliant tone and technical acumen are ideally suited to these concerti. These performances predate the advent of period-instrument interpretation that dominates current recordings of baroque music, but the present offerings cannot be said to be romanticized nor "mushy" versions. The tempi are uniformly well-judged and delivered with verve and momentum, in contrast to the many stodgy, plodding interpretations of these works. The double violin concerto also features great interplay and rapport between Grumiaux and Hermann Krebbers, an artist of the top order in his own right. The Largo movement is particularly fine, revealing Bach in a rarely-equalled lyrical dimension. The concerto for violin and oboe is also delightful, showcasing both soloists (the celebrated Heinz Holliger playing reed) in top form and in full sympathy. The sound throughout is rich and round but with Philips' characteristic clean and clear high-end sonics. I owned this album as an LP years ago, and have kept a slot for it on my CD rack for twenty years. There is a good reason why it still in the catalog. It is simply music of surpassing quality---and an exceptional value to boot...

There isn't anything extraordinary to say about this set of Bach violin concertos. For what they are, classicized performances, they are fine in tempi and polished elegance. Nothing dazzles about it. However, the orchestral sound is rich, and Grumiaux, as usual, sings with his violin playing. As a typically interpretated performance, this recording is a fine disc.

Having recently been disappointed by a recently-purchased CD of Bach violin sonatas by the same peformer, I was interested to read the reviews of and listen to some samples from this CD. I have to agree with the first reviewer's opinion that the interest and excitement of these pieces is lost in these performances. The second movement of BWV 1041, in particular, is one of the most sublime compositions I have heard. It should sound strong and vibrant, driven by the basso ostinato. Here, it sounds romantically vague and mushy.

Using original style instruments and smaller numbers of instruments helps. The benchmark recording for me is an old vinyl LP I own which was produced on the Das Alte Werke label.

As a violinist, I am currently working on the Bach A minor. I got this CD hoping that it would help me out a bit. Well, I was very disappointed. The expression and interpretation is bland, and though I know this is a wonderful concerto, I wouldn't have guessed it from this recording.

Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia should have recorded all of Mozart's piano music for four hands, which includes several neglected masterpieces. This disc reflects their ideal partnership, two artists of great sensitivity collaborating in performances that feature constant interplay of parts, alertness to each other's work, and superb playing as individuals. The Concerto for Two Pianos ripples along without a care in the world, just as it should, and the English Chamber Orchestra doesn't seem to care that nobody is conducting it. The pieces without orchestra are a bit less significant (as is the Concerto for Three Pianos), but the playing is so beautiful you won't care. --Leslie Gerber

Fabulous music performed by fabulous musicians. Mozart is one of my favorite composers. His music is genius. And Muray Perahia and Radu Lupu are two of the greatest pianists of our time.

This is a very good recording of these pieces. Lupu and Perahia take Mozart seriously and play with energy and lyrical power. The chamber orchestra fits very well into the picture. This is a safe bet for these wonderful pieces.

Wow...this is a wondeful recording, plain and simple.

If you haven't listened to the Fanatsia in F minor, originally for mechanical organ, then this is the recording to commence doing so with. This is a fantasic rendition of this piece, full of the darkness that must have pervaded Mozart's final years.

The finale of the E-flat Concerto K365 is also a one-of-a-kind showpiece with wonderful dialogue between the 2 pianos.

Highly recommend this recording as the very best available of the pieces it contains.

This is one of my all time favorite piano works. I have several different versions of K365 and this seems the best combination of punch/musicality/flow. Fantasia K608 is a masterpiece on its own and probably a one of a kind interpretation since it was originally written for the organ, then re-writeen (not by Mozart) for 2 pianos, and last edited by Perahia and Lupu for its final form.

As a reviewer on another piece noted, the modern world seems bent on presenting Mozart as the wunderkind (Tom Hulce playing him like a Martin Short character from SCTV in 'Amadeus' may have had *something* to do with it ). Anyway, this was the disc that opened my mind up to another view of Mozart. I wouldn't call it masculine, but rather, deep, brooding, emotional and above all monstrously convincing: these pieces and the fantastic playing on this disc will make you realize that Mozart was not just a huge influence on Romantic music, but that he deserves more credit than he's gotten for the emergence of the deeply personal, individualistic styles of the 19th C.

The Fm Fantasia was a revelation worthy of the purchase price, if you haven't heard that piece.

Requires the least possible effort beyond the normal exertion of attention
reserved for listening to simple background pleasantries. Lovely in other words, not pretentious at all, nothing else is required anywhere on a daily basis, still I suspect that most of you wouldn't mind a change now and again.

Sorry but from listening to the 1 minute clip of the final movement pc 21, I have to go with Uchida, who in my opinion is the master of Mozart's last 8 pc;s.
I do not care for uchida's recordings of the 1-19, too thick handed for the style of those concertos.
Quick, nimble, playful was not present in Uchida of the 1-19.
Ashkenazy here is too busy with conducting to get the piano down with perfect nuances, which Mozart demands.



EDIT, I've just added to more clip r4eviews , opening move 21 and opening from the 24th pc. Reconfirms my opinuion that Uchida is much better articulated. And though Tate is aweful in the syms , in the pc's he's much more on to of things concentrating in conducting. Ashkenazy is juggling both, successful at times I'll admit. At other times sloppy. Its impossible for any performer to both conduct and play paino. Impossible as this set shows.

Rarely do soloists and orchestras create such an amazing musical experience. Even more rare is that this experience is duplicated over two dozen times. Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia Orchestra create what is truly one of the crowning achievements of audiophile history.

I have owned this set now for nearly half a decade and I am still surprised by Ashkenazy's level of musicianship. Not that I have ever doubted his skill, rather, I am still amazed that this master of Rachmaninoff and the romantics approaches these pieces so perfectly. Ashkenazy plays these concertos as they should be played. His typical sense of drama is somewhat subdued, replaced with a sublime sense of delicacy and classical phrasing. He brings out the beautiful chromaticism, the magical melodies, and the pure beauty of Mozart effortlessly.

What is even more wonderful is that the orchestral accompaniment is top notch. Although these are not period performances, the Philharmonia plays with a classical grace and level of perfection that push these performances over the top. The orchestra's sound is full, accompanying Ashkenazy's "full" sound quite well. As mentioned above, Ashkenazy (who conducts these performances from the piano) instills in the orchestra the perfect balance of classical grace and dramatic flair.

Finally, the recorded sound is flawless. This set is so appealing to me because Ashkenazy approaches these performances in an organized, coherent fashion. Unlike his set of the Beethoven concertos (where Ashkenazy's technique, phrasing, and ultimate interpretation is dramatically different in each concerto), Ashkenazy maintains a sense of classical style throughout the cycle. And not only are the interpretations so consistent, but the sound is as well. It almost seems as if all the concertos were recorded in one session.

Moments like this are rare in music. There are certainly individual performances of the concertos that may be more appealing here or there, but all in all Ashkenazy's cycle delivers the most consistently fresh, powerful, and beautiful interpretations. For those that are not sure they want to invest so much for this set, look into Decca's CD of the "Big Six" concertos (20-25) on two CDs. But you would be missing out. Ashkenazy does not "run through" the earlier concertos but actually plays them all as if they were all equally masterful. I highly recommend this set. It is a wonderful musical investment.

Ashkenazy's style is a very good fit with Mozart's piano works: light, articulate and playful. I could never part with this set. Those who only listen to the most popular concertos are missing out on some of the earlier works, which are just stunningly beautiful. The numerous scales in Mozart's scores represent a huge technical challenge, and Ashkenazy's natural fluidity makes the music very smooth and moving.

The orchestra is well balanced and remarkably well recorded. Overall, this is by far the best complete set of concertos out there. Warmly recommended.

. . . indeed, the pinnacle of musical achievement on Planet Earth - that's what I consider the piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And what better way to hear these concertos than in this superb cycle by Vladimir Ashkenazy. Though you may find an occasional performance that you prefer outside of this set, it is still, in my opinion, the only complete and best overall cycle of Mozart piano concertos - sure to provide you with hours of pleasure.

Ray Hoole's spotlight review above is very good and correct in calling attention to the recording concerns with Concerto No. 17 (K. 453) in this set. Still, only one flawed recording out of twenty-nine isn't bad. If No. 17 is a favorite of yours, as it certainly is of mine, may I suggest you augment this set with "MOZART: Piano Concertos (The Rubinstein Collection Vol. 61)" - RCA label, a small 2 CD album which contains concertos 17, 20, 21, 23 & 24. Not only is Arthur Rubinstein's 1961 performance of No. 17 superior to this one by Ashkenazy (in my opinion), the piano/orchestral balance is perfect in this beautifully remastered recording (and you're sure to like the other Rubinstein concerto performances as well).

Though the reviews for this set are overwhelmingly positive, you'll note an occasional preference for another artist's performances. This is only normal and amounts to purely subjective personal opinion. I've found that often times the first performance one hears of a particular classical piece (particularly if it's good) stays with that person for quite a while, sometimes indefinitely, and flavors the impression of all other performances heard thereafter. Personal preferences of tempo, artistic expression - such as cadenzas used, and orchestration will then be conciously, and subconciously, compared to that first exposure. I say this to make a point. The quality of the performances in this set by Vladimir Ashkenazy are definitely of the caliber needed to make first-time listeners feel certain they are hearing the best, while making more experienced listeners sure they are hearing first rate performances that, if not the absolute best, are certainly among the best they've ever heard. No two ways about it, MOZART: THE PIANO CONCERTOS by Vladimir Ashkenzy and the Philharmonia Orchestra is a 5 star cycle . . . Enjoy!

I love the sound od Harpsichord when they are in Baroque music. However, there are a lot of Baroque ablum outside, but few of them gives so beautiful and complete performance like this one !

I listen to it when I need relax; I listen to it when I need to concentrate (like study). I just put it in the CD player and let the harmony fill the air for as long as I want.

Also, you can not miss is there are more that Bach's masterpiece !! From track 10, Vivaldi comes in to play. "Concerto in B minor" was the theme for the movie "Dangerous Liasons" of Michelle Phiffier and Gleen Close, which combined the enchanting sound of 4 violins and the harpsichord. You will indulge to it once you listen to it.

I'm often skeptical of CDs with low prices, because generally, they turn out to be poor recordings. This is one of the exceptions to that rule. The recording is crisp, clean, and accurate. Bach's Harpsichord Concertos have always been among my favorites, and this CD (along with the other 2 CDs in the Harpsichord Concertos set) contains some of the best recordings that I've heard. Highly recommended.

I consider Ashkenazy to be one of the most underrated pianists. Since he has this unmarketable father figure image in the piano world many people put him in the backburner of their recollections. First of all, anyone with such a prolific repertoire as Ashkenazy falls under the category of "genius" (Richter was also strong in this area). A pianist, in general, has much more credibility if he/she can tackle a variety of different pieces and styles. Many people assume by default that because he splits his time conducting and plays so much different music... that he is a jack of all trades but master of none.
One of the distinct attributes that Ashkenazy has is his amazing intelligence (this links him to Richter). Unlike Gould and Poglerelich who seem eccentric in a childish way at times, Ashkenazy has a very deep understanding of music and its foundations. He understand the composers styles and dynamics. This really sets him aside from many other pianists. I was pleasantly surprised by this Rachmaninoff. It is very flowing and the orchestra is great (better than in the Richter CD in my opinion). There is a feeling that this music is always going in the right direction. Ashkenazy also doesn't fall in the trap of playing Rach Chopin-style. I like the Richter CD better because I like Richter's temperament... but this is an excellent set for those that might find Richter overwhelming.

The pianistic genius of Rachmaninov and his spirit incarnate: Vladimir Ashkenazy. If you have ever heard Rachmaninov play his own music, you probably pondered the impressive talent. But where his personal strengths lay in composition, his performances were a little too eccentric for me. For example, his renditions of militaristic Prelude No. 5 in G minor is a soft, cautious approach; his piano concerto no. 2 played so quickly, there is no time to enjoy each note.

Enter Ashkenazy. He plays that prelude with solid force and quick, snapping fingers, and thunderous chords, climaxing into those beautiful rolling hills...it is played beautifully. And of course, the piano concerto is slowed down to the proper tempo. (Incidentally, I find this concerto has some parts that are played too quickly, thereby losing a sense of largeness to some themes. In later recordings, Jean-Yves Thibaudet performed the concerto exactly to my tastes, and the orchestra was conducted, impressively, by Mr. Ashkenazy himself!)

For the piano enthusiast, this collection is nearly complete. The first three piano concertos are amazing. I grew up with Nos. 3 and then 2, and after a decade of waiting, finally listened to No. 1, which I hold in as high esteem as the later concertos. No. 4 is extremely modern, and I listen to it to let it grow on me, but I will always have a difficult time with this one. It's simply too influenced by his short Hollywood career, I feel. While it stands on its own, compared to the previous three, I tend to skip it.

I've heard Ashkenazy's recordings of the preludes before, but it was nice to finally own them. What can one say? Rachmaninov's forte was the prelude. Nowhere else can you hear chimes and bells with dark Russian themes underlying complex chord structures that scintillate or thunder.

New to me were the two Suites for 2 pianos. While much of it is a bit modern and avant-garde for my tastes, I enjoy them all the same.

For the price, you're getting quite a bargain, though. And if you don't care about the solo piano tracks, London has another release with only the four piano concertos.

This boxed set contains the four piano concertos, along with the entire library of pieces for two pianos, and a good selection of Rachmaninov's major works for solo piano.

Packaged in an elegant Decca slimbox, the 6 CDs are simply a pure joy to listen to. Ashkenazy does not delivery the wildest version of the concertos, or the most passionate or energetic. What he delivers is an incredible legato and incomparable touch, with just the right amount of power when necessary. Previn's conducting is a very good fit with Ashkenazy's sobre and elegant interpretation.

Listen to "Les Larmes" - French for "The Tears" - and appreciate Ashkenazy and Previn's rendering of one of Rachmaninov's most emotional pieces.

This boxed set is, in my opinion, the best Rachmaninov package currently available. The sound quality is very good, and it contains a large selection of piano works by one of the world's finest interpreters.

while i dont have this particular set, i have most of ashkanazy's recordings via other the sets hes made, im assuming these are the same recordings. these are some of my favorite piano works ive ever heard in large part due to his interpretations of this music. i beleive there isnt an interpretation that i was unhappy with, so if you want all of ashkanasy's piano recordings and piano concertos in one set this is a great buy especially for the price and ammount of music.

Ashkenazy shows that he is as much at home here as he is playing Beethoven, Chopin, or Mozart. Although these performances may lack the drama of Argerich's tempestuous playing, they are very credible interpretations of the Russian composer's piano music. His performances of the concerti with Previn conducting the London Symphony Orchestra are regarded as among the finest of the entire Rachmaninov cycle. And his performances with Previn on the piano are fine, even if Previn's technique takes a back seat to Ashkenazy's. Aside from the concerti, the real gems have to be Ashkenazy's brilliant performances of the etudes. They are just as refined and as soulful as his excellent recordings of the entire Beethoven piano sonata cycle. This cheap set not only is a splendid introduction to Rachmaninov, but shows Ashkenazy at his finest, playing with technical elegance and lyricism.

Although Tchaikovsky's music is often performed in a wildly romantic vein, it seems important to point out that his musical idol was not Beethoven(like most romantics), but Mozart. Both the pianist and orchestra give refreshing interpretations of these pieces, which are usually performed with a bit too much bombast. Donohoe's touch is light and bell-like, and complements Tchaikovsky's luminous orchestrations. Most excellent is the neglected second piano concerto, in which Donohoe and the Bournemouth Symphony emphasize the piece's more Mozartean character. However, pianist and orchestra still pack plenty of punch for the big openings and climaxes. Donohoe is not seeking to show off; his tempi are quite sprightly, but not as fast as some pianists, and his forte passages (and they are very loud and exciting) retain a rich, full sound rather than a bangy one. The orchestral climaxes are also quite loud, but sound full and never strained. The recording quality is also superb, bringing out every note and orchestral color, while keeping a nice balance between soloist and orchestra. Overall, I found these recordings to be some of the best Tchaikovsky I have ever heard.
