5 out of 5 stars Instant Euphoria..........2007-05-18

Not only is this In Flames greatest achievement - this is one of the greatest metal albums ever written! Quality metal that is so simultaneously fast and melodic is indeed hard to come by. This album even surpasses such metal classics as 'Master of Puppets', 'Piece of Mind', and 'Rust in Peace'. Whether you like throat vocals or not (and these vocals are a unique brand of throat vocals) the songs will send you into immediate euphoric metal bliss - and the instrumental pieces are brilliant! Combine the best thrash, melodic, and death metal you can think of into one album and you have 'Jester Race: Black Ash Inheritance'. The first moment I heard this masterpiece I was hooked - if you have any love for metal then your collection is incomplete without this album.

RECOMMENDATION: Other great Swedish metal bands to check out include At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Opeth, Soilwork, and many others. Start with this album and let your journey into metal euphoria continue...

5 out of 5 stars Classic!!!!.......2007-02-21

...and that should have constituted my entire review. If ever there was an album as perfect and engaging as Metallica's "Master..." or Megadeth's "Rust..." it is this one! (yes, I am aware of Dark Tranquility, but they have yet to release ANYTHING bad, so I skip them here)! The music is so good here that no wonder ANYTHING after would necessarily have to be a dissapointment from In Flames! Yes, "Whoracle" was great, ditto for "Colony" and "Clayman", but THIS is In Flames' greatest achievement, all else in their discography is mere shadows of this masterpiece (the same can be said of Metallica and their third album). Nothing they have ever done after and before will ever top that, period. The problem is: THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE MATURED SO FAST.Really, if you can only own 1 album of In Flames, this will suffice entirely. There is absolutely no confusion what kind of music is played here: Gothenburg death metal. No core, no thrash, just death! And a melodic grim reaper at that! The knack for melody combined with the sheer power and brilliance of execution could potentially start a third World War if used in a sinister manner. Perhaps that is where my favorite heavy metal bands Dark Tranquility and Opeth take roots. In any case, if you like your metal raw but melodic, this is one of these rare perfect albums you can't afford not to own! BUY NOW!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "You'll forever be stuck here in eternity.....".......2007-02-08

I remember when I first purchased this album, I thought, "Meh, this is pretty good. It'll grow on me eventually." Yeah, well, it did, and I revised that statement into, "Damn, this is awesome!" I currently own 4 In Flames albums (this, Colony, Clayman, and Lunar Strain), and while the other 3 are great, The Jester Race (accompanied by the Black Ash Inheritance EP, at least this version) is probably my favorite IF album thus far.

The music is heavy and bone-crushing, but there's enough melody and beauty (and I don't mean that in a fruity way) to make it appeal to the masses. Anders Friden is honestly one of the best metal vocalists I've EVER heard. Glenn Ljungstrom (guitar),Jesper Stromblad (guitar), Johan Larsson (bass), and Bjorn Gelotte (drums) are also great musicians, and provide the awesome melodies that In Flames can create (even though I think the bass is a lot better on Colony and Clayman than on this album). Moonshield is, simply put, stunning, as it opens up with soothing acoustic guitars and transforms into an epic-driven melodic metal masterpiece. Other great tracks are Lord Hypnos, Dead Eternity, December Flower, Wayfaerer, and Goliaths Disarm Their Davids. Of course, all of the songs are incredible.

The Jester Race is a concept album about the corruption of humankind (referred to as, well, the jester race), and how they have destroyed and ruined the earth (if you analyze the lyrics, you'll see what I mean). I believe I have the just of it, but we're talking about poetic lyrics here, not completely flat, predictable ones. The album also has some throwbacks in, such as the title track, which is reminescent of The Jester's Dance (the first instrumental). My favorite instrumental track on the album is probably Wayfaerer. It sounds a lot different from the rest of the album (and I don't mean that in a bad way). The guitar solos don't sound as bleak as they do on the other songs. Some people don't seem to like this instrumental, but I sure do. On the 4 bonus tracks (which is the Black Ash Inheritance EP that was released a year later), there's a track called Acoustic Medely, which is the title track of the album but in acoustic form. In my opinion, this is brilliantly done, and it might be my favorite bonus track. Goliaths Disarm Their Davids is another one of my favorites, very dark, yet very confident sounding, if that makes sense. There's also a live version of Behind Space from their debut (which would later be redone on Colony). This is one of my favorite IF songs to date, and the live version is done perfectly.

If there is any weak track on the album, I would have to give the nod to Gyroscope. It just doesn't seem to stand out as much as the other tracks, and it loses my attention after a while. Nonetheless, that song is still eons better than pretty much everything being released today. And it's not even that terrible of a song. The lyrics are still great, but the overall feel doesn't demand your attention as much as the other 13 songs.

So is this the best album of 1995's Holy Trinity? Well, I can't say for sure, since I also thoroughly enjoyed Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery and I have yet to hear At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul. However, this is an amazing album to say the least. The lyrics really make you think about the world around you, and makes you question the desires of, say, eternal life (like in the track Dead Eternity, which is about living forever, never to die and be with the people you love; you're just stuck in eternity). The Jester Race is about a minority group preparing for war against a far superior and more sophisticated force (perhaps in the album's story, it's about a group of people rising up to fight the jesters who have ruined the earth). But whatever this album is about, I love it.

It's funny thinking about all of the line-up changes In Flames have gone through over the years. But no matter how many times their lineup changes, this will always remain where their lineup was strongest. So buy this album, and experience some truly unique metal.

5 out of 5 stars In Flames perhaps at their best.......2006-12-04

This may be the best album In Flames ever released it is most certainly a classic along with Whoracle, Colony and Clayman. The album is itself very well done with excellent melody and rythm, awsome guitar work and very good vocals. The tracks are all memorable and this is trully a showcasing of In Flames and their work. Excellent album and deff a good place for a new In Flames fan to start off. Im not sure ive gone a week without listening to this album after picking it up which must have been back in 94 I think.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing will ever surpass its greatness.......2006-09-25

For a while now, I was deciding to make a "My favorite albums" list, and it all went smoothely, except for the fact that I couldnt decide which album is my all-time favorite. Seasons in the Abyss? Burning Bridges? BlackWater Park? Peace Sells...But whos Buying? Night of the Stormrider? Nope, this, my friends, is my all time favorite metal CD. Why? Is it the godly riffs, the technical drum beats, the mind-blowing instrumentals? No, its the feeling of empowerment I get from this. Listening to this cd is what you feel like after winning an award. Much like listening to Strapping Young Lad is the equivilant of 5 cans of Jolt, this gives even more of an adrenaline rush. Whenever I wake up and feel groggy or hung over, I play this and I feel instantly revitilized. Seriously, its that good.

All the songs are my favorites, I never skipped one single song on this whole album.

In Flames are truely one of the greatest bands ever.Dont believe me? Get this, Colony, Whoracle, Clayman, and Lunar Strain. Youll see for youself theyre greatness.

Album Description

A colorful mix of gentle contemplative ballads, snappy and percussive jams, rock-edged electricity and hints of folk music, Irish jig and traditional church music influences, Inheritance marks a radical contrast from the unadorned, minimal production approach of the London born guitarist's rootsy 2003 label debut Guitar Bones.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I Would Like To Hear Mr. Legg Play A Real Acoustic!!!!.......2005-06-11

Adrian Legg is an incredibly gifted player there is no doubt about that, but I think he relies to heavily on effects to do the playing. Like for instance the song "Psalm With No Words," that song would have been great without his guitar all phased/chorused out. It sounds terrible! He also needs to work on playing less, because he tries to put too many chords/notes in a phrases and it just doesn't sound that great. His songwriting is okay, but I think his playing shouldn't overshadow the song. The song should always come first.

Many of his albums are lacking in the creativity department simply because he tries too hard to somehow inject his songs with an over usage of technique. He should really let the song speak for itself and not subject his listeners to his effects and overbarring guitar technique(s).

I like Adrian Legg, but I'm not going to subject myself to him, unless his music starts to speak for itself.

4 out of 5 stars very good show.......2005-04-11

Adrian Legg sounds exactly like Adrian Legg, and no one else. And no one else sounds anything like Adrian Legg. He is one of the most gifted acoustic guitarists around, with an instantly recognizable sound, excellent compositional skills, and a delightful sense of humor. This release stands as one of Adrian's best CDs. It's a skillful, lovely, idiosyncratic, resounding testament to one of the best solo acoustic guitarists on the scene today.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Fingerstyle.......2004-12-25

Melding snappy chicken pickin', Travis-style alternating bass, swing-band voicings, real-time retuning, bagpipe-like drones, and pedal steel-inspired bends, Adrian Legg pushes the boundaries of solo guitar like no one else. His broad sonic palette includes acoustic colors from a miked parlor guitar ("My Blackbird Sings All Night"), ringing mag-pickup timbres ("Nail Talk"), and sizzling undersaddle pickup sounds bathed in ambient washes of digital processing ("English Blue"). Pledging no allegiance to any particular genre or musical period, he bounces from delicate, hymn-like melodies to funky Jerry Reed riffs to pensive modal improvisations. A skilled arranger, Legg occasionally augments his guitar with string and brass ensemble accompaniment; these organic sounds provide a welcome foil to his electronic explorations. While many of the originals on this instrumental record have a somber cast, Legg's subversive take on tone and technique give Inheritance a playful feel.

5 out of 5 stars Great record with signature expert pickin!.......2004-10-23

Was eager to check out Legg's new record and was in no way disappointed! He, again, has delivered with his well-known incredible guitar pickin combined with beautifully crafted songs...
A delight to listen to over and over...this will be a mainstay in my CD player for a long time to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Monilith of an album!.......2005-10-08

This CD is unbelievable epic! Where to start?!?!

The guitar playing is amazing. Marek mixes beautiful melodies with some of the craziest shredding since Yngwie. The remarkable thing is how tasteful it comes out everytime... Now I'm not one to usually say that... But it's amazing how perfect every solo is! Also, the rhythm is just as great. This band is definately unique. Many of the rhythm parts are brutal yet incredibly creative. This album is definately NOT generic.

Drums and Bass are just as powerful. You can actually hear the bass adding power to the guitar in certain parts. On top of that, the drums came out really well and added a solid backbone to all of the other instruments. Overall the sound quality is pretty impressive.

Despite what some people say, I think the lyrics are well written and intriguing. The vocal perfomance isn't always perfect because of Marek's thick accent, however, it doesn't interfere with the experience.

The musical arrangements are beautiful in many places. "Flying Over The Treetops" For example, is an amazing instrumental which features an awesome tapping segment on a non-distorted guitar.

In addition, I felt that the Jimmi Hendrix cover at the end was wonderful... "Move over Rover... And let Esqarial take over!" I still laugh when I hear that.

I can't recomend this album enough. This band definately deserves more recognition and can easily make you forget about alot of other bands out there.

Also, for anybody wanting to see a clip of these guys play, I suggest you look up a copy of the "Metalmania 2004" DVD... It features three live songs perfomed by Esqarial and a new singer!

5 out of 5 stars Very tasteful death metal.......2005-02-22

This is one of those bands that it is sad how few people know about. Even in underground circles, this band is hardly talked about. Probably if they sung about Satan and performing some type of non-heterosexual act they would be noticed, but as it stands they are a very talented lesser known band. I am a big fan of technical death metal or just generally good musicianship so I immediately thought this was a very good CD. I am always so confused how people can like one tech death band like Sinners Bleed but hate a band that sounds so similar like Gory Blister. It really doesn't make any sense to me. I don't hate bands for no reason; I really like a lot of talented death metal bands. Anyways, if you like very nice guitar solos, you would probably like this album if you already like death metal. The album definitely focuses on technicality over vocals, and I think this is a good approach for this band especially. There is a definitely prog/jazz feeling at certain points on this cd that remind me of the bands Acrimonia, Esicastic, and Cause for Effect. Most reviews I have read on amazon.com really don't help me make a firm decision on whether or not I want to buy a CD. Yet, I was truly impressed with this band, and they remind me slightly of Necrophagist with the guitar wizardry. Some people who are in to death metal do not appreciate the skill that is required in a good death metal band. You have to be able to appreciate talent to be able to appreciate this band. If you are in to death metal because the screaming helps you deal with your insecurities about your small genitalia, then perhaps you should try listening to Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse or a band that will support your kind. Anyways, this bad boy right here belongs in the hands of non-idiots who listen to metal or like guitar solos and bald men falling off cliffs.

Inheritance tells the story of Monika Hertwig, the daughter of Amon Goeth, the monstrous commandant of the Plaszow Concentration Camp. Executed when Monika was a year old, Goeths crimes against humanity are welldocumented. To those who have not borne the unimaginable reality of The Holocaust in their lifetime, Stephen Spielberg's film adaptation of Schindler's List serves alongside the work of The Shoah Foundation to depict Goeth's sadistic brutality half-a-century after the liberation of Plaszow. It is this legacy of horror, unknown to Monika until her teen years, that she seeks to further understand by reaching out to a camp survivor in James Moll's film. Separated from her mother and sisters, Helen Jonas-Rosenzweig was enslaved as a housemaid to Goeth. She lived in fear as both chattel and prey of the prominent Nazi leader, before being rescued by Oskar Schindler and reunited with her sisters, brought to work at his factory in Brunnlitz, Czechoslovakia where they would remain until the end of the war. 1. 4 out of 5 stars Thanks for this CD.......2005-11-15

As a previous reviewer said, the music of Herbert Sumsion deserves more attention these days. This CD is an excellent introduction to his music. Those who are familiar with Howells, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams will find much to enjoy in Sumsion's style--fluid, natural, adept at evoking a variety of moods. My favorite work on this CD, the haunting "They that go down to the sea in ships," showcases Sumsion's facility at setting text and creating a truly integrated organ accompaniment. Occasionally the performances are a little rough around the edges, particularly with the men and boys choir (some straining on the part of the trebles), but this does not really hinder an appreciation of Sumsion's compositional voice. Some lovely gems by other composers are an added bonus. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good music, but not the best performances.......2001-03-17

I purchased this recording with great anticipation, as it has some stellar works on it, done by someone with great familiarity with Sumsion and Howells. Unfortunately, the music is often passionless, the sound not balanced, lazy releases, and the organ a bit subdued for most of the accompaniments as well as on the Introduction and Theme. But, Sumsion deserves much more attention these days, and Hunt should be commended for recording his music.

In the mid-80s, it was noted in an article by a curious vocal specialist that the once-ubiquitous, even stereotypical, deep Russian bass voice had become relatively scarce. Happily, with the end of the Soviet empire and the resurgence of the Russian Orthodox Church--and, therefore, increased demand--those foundation voices of the liturgy have returned in plenty. Several of those basses (along with some fine tenors, altos and sopranos) are heard to fortunate effect in this recording. There is a rare example of Tchaikovsky writing in traditional liturgical mode in the song that gives the album its title. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Artillery. One of those bands you never heard of. The type of band that got totally ignored by the Thrashmetal scene back in the old days. but there are some of us out there who did not ignore this superior awesome band. Artillery sound very similar to Master of Puppets, but with Udo from Accept doing vocals. However, they are just as talented if not more than old Metallica. The first track Komaniac is one of the most badass Speedthrash songs ever written and the riffs remind me very much of the ones in "Dyer's Eve" from Justice. Plus Flemming Rasmussen produced By Inheritence which gives the guitar sound that extra thick crushing sound. The songwriting on this album is so awesome it really is a shame that Artillery have been ignored so much. All ten songs totally kick ass full with skull smashing riffs, blazing solos and also a few clean arppegiated passages which would appeal to fans of the debut Metal Church album. All in all this album is in my opinion a true Thrash classic and it needs to get reissued!! Buy it now you will not be disappointed
