    5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!.......2002-11-05

The tunes in John Playford's The English Dancing Master have been recorded frequently and are a staple in English country dance circles. Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band present here some of the best renditions of these tunes that are currently available on CD. I strongly recommmed this CD for anyone interested in Renaissance music, country dance music, or just plain ole' fun music.

5 out of 5 stars Andreas Scholl - English Folksongs & Lute Songs (17th Century).......2005-10-12

I love it ... very relaxing pace throughout. It's definitely a keeper I'll play it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars English perfection from the great German singer.......2000-10-09

The CD starts with Behold a Wonder Here (Dowland) and for people familiar with Emma Kirby's rendering, it's a bit of a surprise. Nothing namby-pamby about this: it suits Andreas's range perfectly and he lets go with plenty of oomph.

The unaccompanied King Henry is a showcase for his purity of tone. I doubt that other countertenors could pull this song off so well, of those one thinks of at the present time.

His expression in My Love Hath Vow'd (Campion) is very varied and playful, but it is so very much a woman's song that I found it hard to take from Andreas Scholl, albeit sung so so well. I had to imagine the composer singing with his own lute, and remind myself over and over again that the singer is quoting the woman in the song ...

The preoccupation with sorrow and death of the English composers of the period seems to amuse Andreas somewhat, when he is asked about it, but you would never know it from listening to him sing these sad songs. His steady, pure voice is like a rope drawing you right into the pain. The highlights IMHO are All Ye Whom Love or Fortune Has Betrayed and I Saw My Lady Weep. Heartbreaking.

Andreas Scholl describes himself as a singer in the English tradition - despite what others say of him and his German/Swiss musical background. In these archetypal English songs, he proves his point. It is a beautiful, beautful collection.

        4 out of 5 stars FIRST RATE!.......1999-07-10

I am not a fan of the sound of a counter-tenor. I would prefer to hear much of the same repertory sung by a mezzo, say Marilyn Horne or Rise Stevens. That said, Andreas Scholl continues to surprise me. His is not the whiny, nasal sound I associate with a counter-tenor. He has a bright, expressive voice of great passion. And this album does not disappoint. Most of the songs were new to me although I'd heard a few of them in modern arrangements for voice and guitar on other albums such as the superb "Elizabethan Lute Songs" on RCA Gold Seal sung by Sir Peter Pears accompanied by Julian Bream. Also it must be noted that Scholl's command of English is absolute. One would never imagine that English were not his first language.

        5 out of 5 stars bravo!!!.......1999-06-11

this is one of the best renaissance cds that ive ever had. it captures in the performance all the great characteristics of the renaissance art.

must pieces are simple in structure as most folk renaissance music. but the elegance, clear and total control of the interpretation of andrea scholl takes the music to another dimetion.

must of the songs are short melodies that are repited. but each repetition by scholl is made with and incredible perfection and musical conscience.

the pieces for lute solo are wanderfull and well perform.

        bravo andrea

4 out of 5 stars A voice so perfect that it is boring.......1999-04-26

This is a collection of incredibly beatuful English medieval songs, which Andreas Scholl sings with serenity so perfect that it sounds mechanical. Scholl has a vocal timbre of remarkable consistency and clarity; his voice is angelic in tone, yet somehow it fails to satisfy when more earthly emotions are called for. I couldn't help thinking that I liked these songs better when sung by others. For example, Deller and Chance recorded some of this repertory, and even though their voices are more tremulous than Scholl's, the overall expressiveness of their singing (and their more transparent masculinity) seemed far superior to Scholl's genderless and immaculate singing. Likewise, I relished much more the singing of this repertory by Paul Agnew, whose spectacular high tenor is so conducive to the exposition of the subsurface emotiveness of English early music. Perhaps, I just like the English vocal tradition better. Scholl is a Rene Jacobs pupil, so I shouldn't be surprised that he sounds a lot like his teacher: effeminate, mannered, angelic and ultimately boring.

This attractive package comes with the sort of lustrous and vivid cover art reproductions Harmonia Mundi is known for, as well as a 69-page book of notes in four languages, complete with real binding. Musically, though, these studied historically correct performances are flat. They lack a sense of fun and daring. The dances are a bit pedestrian. And though there may be no way of positively historically verifying that these, mostly anonymous, 17th-century tunes were meant to elicit love, joy, and laughter, I'll put my money on the theory. --Gwendolyn Freed

5 out of 5 stars The best of King's Noyse.......2002-02-15

I have other CDs of King's Noyse, but I consider this the best of the consort. The 17th-Century English ballads and dances bring to us a kind of inner harmony. The musicians's performance is very exquisite. Tracks 1, 2, 3 and 7 are very joyful.

5 out of 5 stars Vocal and instrumental collection.......1998-12-04

The Kings' Noyse glides you thru a courtly and elegant rendering of Elizabethan ballads and dance music. Joined by the exquisite lutenist Paul O'dette and soprano Ellen Hargis - whose lovely voice fits the genre quite well - this CD is pleasant and easy to listen to.

        C. Armstrong Gibbs was a superb miniaturist, able to crystallize his musical ideas in delightful, pastoral small pieces. Although sometimes he has been slighted as a lightweight composer, the Guildhall Strings perform with an empathy that demonstrates both the emotional depth and the musical invention that argues against this appraisal. Start with this and then seek out his 1st and 3rd symphonies on Marco Polo. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Very Revealing and Entertaining Collection.......2006-01-15

'Johnny, cock thy Beaver' by The Dufay Collective is a combination of popular music from both the masses and the gentry with pretensions to musical sophistication. In other words, this is the stuff which made up the top 40 hit parade in the 17th century.

One thing which immediately strikes me is that there is nothing here which we hear from old English folk music performers. This leads me to believe that the contention that the folk music of today was the popular music of way back then is quite false.

This is NOT the sort of thing which got Fairport Convention or The Pentangle off the ground.

It is a bit light for the scholarly among us, but if your musical tastes are omniverous, this is a tasty bite.

          5 out of 5 stars Exhilerating!.......2000-07-21

I thought it was excellent. Sure, it does lack the bawdy drinking songs, but it does include many very danceable tunes--played in a folksy, rough-edged style that unfortunately is lacking in many interpretations of this repertoire. The last set of tunes from Playford (track 25) is veritably indistinguishable from what you might hear from a modern British folk band, except less refined (tailored for modern ears). The lead fiddler calls out the changes between tunes, and the rest of the players contribute shouts of exhileration, foot-stomping, and hand-clapping. In this way, the Dufay Collective gives us a glimpse of the way this music might've been performed by "the common people" three centuries ago, by non-professional musicians and singers. Oh--and John Potter, the guest singer, is a delight! He obviously enjoys these songs as he interprets them with style and an ear for the unusual. You think you've heard early music? Not like this.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Glimpse into the Past.......2000-06-30

As a seventeenth-century re-enactor I am always on the lookout for some good music from the period. From the title I was hoping for some good drinking songs. Whilst the CD is very nice with some interesting music on it, don't expect bawdy drinking tunes (or anything even vaguely rude as a matter of fact). The music is reproduced with a great deal of gusto - this would make excellent "background music" for an event, but wasn't really what I was hoping for.
