Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20

This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.

How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!

They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.

Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.

Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

I had attended a SF Symphony performance which included "Pictures At An Exhibition" as orchestrated by Ravel. I was pleasantly suprised by how much I liked that piece taken as a whole. I have always thought highly of Bernstein's interpretation, and believed I would hear a nicely played and interpreted version of 'Pictures..' Indeed, the piece is executed as I thought it would. I like Bernstein's interpretation of 'Pictures At An Exhibition', and the album, on the whole, is worth the suggested price.

I loved this CD. It is the same cover and everything as the record we had while I was growing up. In HS we actually marched to this! Wonderful memories and excellent recording.

There are very few musical memories I have before the age of ten but "Pictures At An Exhibition" is one of them.
I was in bed putting off going to school when I saw this awsome ad for The United States Navy.
While showing scenes of eighteenth century battleships, they played this music. Nearly thirty years later, I still cant get it out of my head!

Last movement of Pictures conducted too slow.......2002-05-21

Hello,
I feel that Bernstein conducted the last movement of Pictures too slowly. It has a majesty and grace all it's own but in Bernstein's hands it slows to a jaunted crawl and looses some of the awe effect. Also the percussion is ever so slightly too loud in the end. I don't thing the tubular bells or gong were meant to be heard as much felt. Kind of a let down, but there's another version I'm used to hearing that set me up for this. Not sure what version that is, but I'll let ya know if I find out. The rest of "Pictures" is decent, and "Night" is great.

Outstanding performance.......2001-05-03

Bernstein really captures the spirit of the music, from the light feel of the Unhatched chicks and the Market Place at Limoges, to the pure brawn of Bydlo, to the mysteriousness of the catacombs and the cum mortuis in liqua mortua, finishing it triumphantly with the great gate of Kiev. I've really enjoyed this production, and listen to it frequently.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

If only we had more "tyrants" like this one........2007-05-16

The only comparable orchestra to Reiner's late fifties Chicago Leviathan was another Midwestern ensemble a few hundred miles to the east in Cleveland (also commanded by an expatriate Hungarian Jewish maestro).

It's a toss up over which orchestra was better, but this disc features ensemble playing of such overwhelming strength and authority that I can hardly think of a Szell/Cleveland recording that tops it, especially since the RCA Living Stereo sound is far better than the shabby sonics of Columbia/Sony.

Glinka's "Russlan and Ludmilla: Overture" alone is worth the unbelievably low admission price. The orchestra is simply on fire and it was captured in fabulous fifties sound that hasn't aged.

If a little tape hiss puts you into a hissy fit then by all means avoid this disc. (And also avoid those musty old paintings in the Prado and the Metropolitan.) Otherwise just buy it and crank up the volume to something approaching the hundred-plus decibels Reiner heard as the CSO burned onto tape one of the finest recordings in the history of classical music.

This orchestra really is a cut above.......2007-03-06

From the moment the brass open the Promenade, it's instantly apparent just how flawless and precisely this orchestra plays. This is the most perfect intonation I have heard on any recording, ever. I have to agree with other reviewers in saying that even being 50 years old, this recording sounds better than a lot of recent CDs I own. Everything is unbelievably crisp and clear. Congratulations to Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for an amazing job.

I should mention though, the previous reviewer is right, there IS tape hiss throughout the CD. It isn't loud and I for one don't find it irritating, but it is more noticable than on other recordings I have. The liner notes also explain it- "to preserve the quality of the source material during transfer, we rejected any process by which tape hiss or other minor imperfections in the source material could be minimized at the expense of the original musical program's sonic integrity". I am glad at this choice.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic version of one of the great masterpieces of the 19th century. At the absurdly low price of $7.95, I don't see any reason to pass this one up.

"White"/Background Noise Problem.......2007-01-15

I was very excited when I found this recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition," however I have been slightly disappointed. Musically the performance is amazing, and is without a doubt the best that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, there is a lot of background/"white" noise in the recording that becomes very noticeable especially in the softer moments of the piece. It's almost like hearing nails on a chalkboard.

This "white" noise goes away by turning the volume down, however the music suffers from this as well. I have not had this problem with other CDs/recordings.

Fritz Reiner brings out the best in Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition with full clear presentations of each section of the piece. The clarity of the recording is just great.

Remastered "Pictures" Done Right!.......2007-06-27

Prog-rock supertrio ELP didn't just turn long-deceased Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's music into rock,they turned him into a rock star.Before this came out,most people were only aware of the classical composer's music in the form of his "Night On Bald Mountain" via Disney's "Fantasia".Most people had never heard of the "Pictures At An Exhibition" suite until ELP's version and 'yes,found their way into a deeper interest in and appreciation for classical forms through this experience.What matters now is how well ELP's interpretation holds up 35 years later.This Shout! reissue,like Emerson, Lake & Palmer,Tarkus and Trilogy,is a major improvment sound quality-wise over the weak Atlantic,Victory and Rhino versions.At a reasonable price,no ELP or prog-rock fan should hesitate to upgrade with this remastered jewel.

The definitive "Pictures at an Exhibition".......2007-04-30

Not much more I can add to this. If you have any interest in the original piano version of "Pictures" at all then this is the one to get. Try Muti's for an excellent version of the piece as orchestrated by Ravel(Along with a great "Rite of Spring"; dirt cheap too)- Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibiton; Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring.

Nobody else understands "Pictures" as well as Richter and in his hands time melts and you are taken on a journey you will not soon forget. Richter pushes and pulls this piece wherever he wants and we the listeners are happy to follow him where he chooses to take us.

The piano sound is quite good for its time. Fairly full and with a good dynamic range. Unfortunately the audience seems to have a case of infectious coughing. Similar to the live Wartime recordings of Furtwangler in that respect. You get used to it though, and either way it doesn't matter in the hands of a performance of this stature.

There's a reason that you can still buy this nearly 50(?!) years after it was recorded. Not only are people still talking about this recital, but we are still waiting for a recording to match it in modern sound without audience interruptions. I suspect we may have to wait a long, long time.

there are two recordings that would've perhaps been much more appreciated had there not been several people who coughed their way through the entire concert. the furtwangler 1942 recording of Beethoven's sixth symphony and this one.
jesus. i'm not one to complain about coughing, but we have issues here. was it communism?? really, were russians this worse off???????

things set aside, the performance itself.. is magical.

i can't add much more to previous reviewers except this: expect one of the worst recordings from the 1950's... if you brainwash yourself into believing this is one of those naxos or pearl remastered 1920s recordings, you'll find yourself much more pleased.

The Most Memorialand Quoted Piano Recital from the 1950's .......2005-12-15

Svaitoslav Richter is the quintiessential pianist of the 20th century. This epic live recording of the Mussorsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" stands as the supreme recording of the piano version ever recorded. Although some will argue that Horowitz recorded of his this piece with is its numerous interpretative changes is also notable but is mearly a flashey more superficial rendition than Richter's. Richter here captures this pieces mistical and heavenly appeal so perfectly it seems its nuances are forever engrained in your mind. The Promenade is so stately and energetically expressed it seemingly gives us permission to enter a heavenly 30 minute musical forum. The variation number 5, 8, 10 and the next to last are my favorites. Being a pianist (and I use that term loosely) this recording has taught me so much with regards to vivid imagery. For example the next to last variation leaves me with the impression that it is someone taking the road to heaven and finally arrives at its gates. Then is looking at the Gates of Heaven as they Open. A grand moment in any life. Richters imagery is so perfectly unbalanced that he leaves us on edge to anticipate each colorful moment. This is truely my favorite recording in classical piano because it is so awe inspiring.

Wow.

If the vivid imagery Richter creates in this live performance isn't enough to bring tears to your eyes, the technical prowess will certainly send you searching for the "repeat" button on your cd player.

Richter, as always, delivers an emotional and monumental performance.

A concert recording can't be perfect, this is the worst i hear. All the people are ill and the record man was probably far as 50m of the piano behind a door.
So, Why three stars ?
because i love this music and nobody play it as Richter this day.

Entertaining Music.......2007-01-09

I first learned about Isao Tomita's music when I was a teenager and had been waiting forever for it to come to CD - I love his style, his orchestrations of the classics, and highly recommend anyone who likes synthesized music to listen - some of his movements in this piece are even better than the full orchestra, which I recently enjoyed here again in Baltimore. Try it! You might like it!

TOMITA frenzy.......2006-08-05

I honestly do not have any idea how I first attained this work by Tomita. My only guess is I walked into a record store one day, and they were playing it over the loudspeakers. I sometimes ask the cashier what is playing when something strikes me as unusually surreal or hypnotic. I first had this on 8-track probably when it was first released. About several years ago, I finally listened to my doggone bugging conscience, and rebought it on CD release. It was the only Tomita I ever owned because I liked this recording so extremely much, I never dared to purchase another one of his releases for fear of any kind of substantial disappointment. It would kill me. This particular recording is in my book a masterpiece of electronic art. Although I listen to this recording when I am feeling quite dreamy and imagine a total castle of "night gallery" paintings come to life, I also envision lots of other things. The first number, which is classic, is a perfect opener number. For some reason I see a delusioned out of luck man sitting on an empty bus stop bench wondering where to go next. . .when all of a sudden the leafless trees in front of him aligning the middle of the roadway barrier light up in different colors simultaneously to the opening notes, transporting him to a dark and sinister castle of medieval times. The final sequence is where the ghosts and kind spirits of medieval period gather in a church procession with their grand costumes singing in harmony, ending in a finale of colored glass paintings of the very church they haunt. I really need to take computer art school. Thanks Tomita.

At my 17th birthday (1980) I received from my friends the vinyl version of Pictures by Tomita. As I know the piano as wellas the orchestrated version it took some time to accept and process this electronic version, but one it did, wow!!

They were times where I listened continously the piano, orchestrated, ELP's version and finished with Tomita.. its not easy bu a worthwhile effort

Bursting with Life.......2006-05-22

I was introduced to the zany and inspired world of Isao Tomita only a few months ago. The first thing I heard was his version of Pictures at an Exhibition (on an LP), and it blew me away.

Anyone who has listened to the original piano version that Mussorgsky wrote knows that it is bursting with life and wit and subversive charm. There aren't a lot of notes on the page, but every one of them counts, and every one of them leaves an impact. When Ravel did his famous orchestration, he brought further to life the already lively piano music by assigning each note to an instrument that seemed just right. With his unique take on the music, Tomita has even further expanded the artistic range of this piece.

The effects are explosive, kitschy, funny, radical, astonishing, charming, and, above all, witty. Tomita, the electronic alchemist, really whipped up a crazed cocktail of sonic frenzy when he undertook Pictures. It is nothing like the piano version, and it is nothing like the Ravel. It doesn't resort to the largely ineffective rock-and-roll grandstanding of the ELP version. This is pure music, once again. Sure, it's nutty sometimes, but it's also bracing and jaw-droppingly diverse.

Some complain about bleeps and bloops. This was Tomita's second release. His first was a collection of Debussy pieces that were much lighter in character and didn't really showcase his range. After Pictures, he undertook The Planets, Firebird, The Grand Canyon Suite, and many other classical showpieces that work in their original orchestrations but not particularly in Tomita's unbalanced, excessive, and inappropriate electronic ventures. In those cases, the bleeps and bloops distract, and garishly. But with Pictures, he had, for the first time, become sure of himself, and he had not yet fallen into a rut of shameless grandiosity and poor artistic choices. The bleeps and bloops in Pictures are wacky, to be sure, and perhaps drug-induced - I don't know - but they WORK.

Tomita's massively self-indulgent concert over the Thames back in the early 80's proved just how far he had drifted, over the years, from pure music. But before he drifted, he left behind Pictures at an Exhibition. Simply stated, it represents the height of Tomita's artistry and the exuberance of youth, and beyond that, it's a really exciting record. Listen to it late at night, and you'll see what I mean.

A Novelty, at best........2005-07-22

Out of pure curiosity, I bought this album as well as the version by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, to compare against the classical versions I already owned. In Pictures, Mussorgsky had written a grandiose piece for solo piano, later adapted to a full orchestra. ELP managed ti capture some of this majesty, but fell short in other places.

Tomita missed the mark all together. Even in some of the best-written movements, the listener is distracted by the beeps and boops of the synthesizer. I would not recommend this for serious listeners; it can only serve as a novelty piece.
