One happy byproduct of the Bach 2000 celebrations has been the examination of Bach's musical roots in 17th-century Germany and the rediscovery of talented composers from the generations between Heinrich Schütz and J.S. Bach. Philippe Herreweghe is one of the most respected Bach conductors in the world; this release is his contribution to that musical reexamination. The six brief cantatas on this disc are relatively small-scaled--all are for singers with a small ensemble of strings--and they tend toward the contemplative rather than the extroverted. Even Franz Tunder's cantata on Luther's famous chorale "Ein feste Burg" ("A mighty fortress is our God") seems fairly serene, without the triumphal aspect that Bach gave the tune in his Cantata BWV 80. These works sound rather more like Schütz (a rhetorical, almost madrigalesque style) than Bach (dense counterpoint)--although Gott, sei mir gnädig by Johann Kuhnau (Bach's predecessor in Leipzig) closes with a fugal chorus that could almost pass for Handel. Herreweghe's musicians perform as admirably as always; however, the Schütz-like text-centered quality in the music seems to suit a solo-voice consort better than 14-voice choir Herreweghe uses here. Indeed, in the latest of these cantatas, Christoph Graupner's Herr, die Wasserströme (full of storm imagery), it seems Herreweghe is holding back a bit--he can't let his choir rip the way an ensemble of soloists such as Cantus Cölln could. It's a bit ironic, really, in that the six soloists are all marvelous: while this is a very good recording, it could have been much better had Herreweghe saved the money he paid his choristers. --Matthew Westphal

My favorite Herreweghe cd.......2006-09-01

I purchased this cd a while back and have listened to it relentlessly. The lyrical quality of the album is just fantastic, particularly the tremendously skillful interplay among vocalists. I hate too much vabratto in singing, that is so prevalent among many artists. You won't find that here, just heart wrenching harmonies. Deborah York stands out as a north star in what seems a milk way galaxy of artists on this album. The control and precision if her voice is just amazing. She has a truely inspired ability to change pitch and dynamics on hair and not show a sign of strain. I generally listen to cantus colln because they perform period music not record elsewhere. I could only hope for this quality of vocals from them. If you enjoy music from this period then give this album a listen and you won't regret it.

Profoundly beautiful, deeply spiritual music, movingly sung and gorgeously played, with excellent sonics to boot. I defy you not to cry while listening! Very highly recommended.

Bruhns was a fine composer.......2005-09-18

Cantus Colln has done a great service for those who appreciate and wish to explore the German traditon of cantatas. The compostions of Bruhns are wonderful and the native German singers make the texts come alive through the wonderful music. I'd give it six stars if I could!

For the longest time I knew German masters such as Bruhns only through their organ music. Upon hearing recordings of music such as this, one realizes that these men were not one dimensional church composers, but sophisticated composers capable of much.

Long-awaited - a triumph!.......2003-06-22

C.P.E. Bach's obituary for J.S. Bach tells that his father "loved and studied" the music of Nikolaus Bruhns. The contrapuntal mastery of Bruhns's well-known and well-recorded organ works becomes immediately obvious upon first listening. The Bruhns cantatas, on the other hand, have received relatively few recordings. This document (by Cantus Colln) is only the second effort of its kind in the CD era (the first one by the Ricercar Consort on the Ricercar label is now out of print).

German cantatas from the late 17th Century are finally getting the attention they deserve. Bruhns is only one of numerous examples in music history where a master composer goes out of fashion, only to be rediscovered when the climate and media are suitable for performance. As J.S. Bach was for Mendelssohn in the early 19th Century; Buxtehude, Schelle and Bruhns are for their recent champions of the turn of the 21th Century. These three composers, who are getting a great deal of deserved attention these days, were considered the greatest craftsmen of North German Church music in their day. Now we have the luxury to hear these works for ourselves after the mystical "Romantic" image of Bach has faded, and we can judge this music with fresh ears.

Three of Bruhns's cantatas deserve special mention. Firstly, it is fair to contemplate how J.S. Bach (using whatever scarce free time he might have conjured in his early professional life) might have marvelled over the contrapuntal perfection in Bruhns's cantata "Muss nicht der Mensch auf dieser Erden in stetem Streite sein." This is a remarkable example of polyphony in that the exposition, episodes, and entries all seem to grow organically and effortlessly out of one another. This graceful manner rivals some of the best of Bach's fugues. The "textbook perfection" and evenness of Bruhns's counterpoint seems to go by almost unnoticed.

The cantata "Ich liege und schlafe" is an important forerunner for J.S. Bach's later expanded cantatas with multiple sections. It is in the form of the "Concerto-aria cantata", which was first cultivated by Italians in mid-seventeenth-century Dresden, popularized in Germany, then taken further by Bruhns [We must consider Bach's earliest cantatas as fluid continuations of these forms. A prime example is Bach's cantata "Gottes Zeit ist die Allerbeste Zeit", which is not as chromatic as his later cantatas of the same genre, thus sounding more like a 17th century composition].

The other remarkable Bruhns cantata is "Hemmt eure Tränenflut", which lies on the threshold of eighteenth-century mixed cantata forms. One should pay close attention to the final "Amen" in which the beginning is quoted almost note for note in Bach's "Christ lag in Todesbanden" BWV 4. It's important to keep in mind that this music was written in a period where composers rarely intended for the parts to be doubled. The French innovation of "orchestral doubling" that later influenced Bach, Handel, and Telemann did much to change this. However, when we put Bach in the context of the North German cantatas, it't then easier to justify why conductors like Andrew Parrott and Joshua Rifkin perform and record Bach with one-per-part.

There's not much to say about Cantus Colln's performance of the Bruhns cantatas other than the fact that this ensemble is clearly in its prime. Konrad Junghänel has been directing some of the highest level recordings of concerted vocal music in the past ten years (listen to their recordings of Schütz's "Psalmen Davids" or the cantatas of Buxtehude). Junghänel, together with his expert native German singers and his highly sensitive continuo section, just get better and better! If you want to hear baroque performance at its finest, you should not hesitate to buy this CD.

On this recording are six of the twelve surviving Bruhns cantatas. Does this imply that Jungänel will release a Vol. 2 in the near future?

Two All-But-Unknown North German Masters.......2005-12-03

Before I heard this disc Nicolaus Bruhns was only a name to me, and Georg Dietrich Leyding wasn't even that. These two North German masters, each born about twenty years before Bach and Handel, studied with Buxtehude and wrote in the Buxtehudian style known as 'stylus phantasticus'. This SACD -- whose sound, by the way, is extraordinarily lifelike, and captures the beauty of the organ of the Sankt-Petri-Kirche in Melle -- is the first organ SACD I've heard, but if this is any indication of what they can sound like, I'm sold! The disc contains all the known organ works of these two composers, a pitifully small amount of music for two such masters of organ writing. None of the works exists in the composers' hand. Indeed, much of the Bruhns music is taken from copies made by Johann Sebastian Bach for his own use. One can only hope that eventually other manuscripts will be found; these are sensationally effective works.

Bruhns (1665-1697) began as a violinist, taking up the organ only when sent to Lübeck to study under Buxtehude. He became a virtuoso on both instruments and it is said that he sometimes took his violin into the organ loft and played violin and organ pedal duets! It is clear from his writing for pedals that he must have been an extraordinary player. There is, for instance, a double pedal passage in the first fugue of the Praeludium in G Major that begs to be heard and marveled at. As Amazon has not listed them as of the date of this review, I will list the Bruhns works played here: Praeludia in e minor (the 'great'), in G Major, in g minor, and in e minor (the 'little'), as well as an Adagio in D and a Chorale Prelude on 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland.' The works are epitomized by fastasia/toccata passages interspersed with formal fugues (in some cases more than one fugue per Prelude).

Georg Dietrich Leyding (1664-1710) is represented by five works, all of which are given their first recordings: Praeludium in C Major, in B Major, in E flat Major, and a chorale prelude on 'Von Gott will ich nicht lassen' and, finally, a fragmentary piece based on 'Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.' Those north German organists must have been real show-offs -- the first Prelude begins with a virtuoso solo pedal cadenza, and there are others throughout Leyding's works.

The organist here was previously unknown to me: Friedhelm Flamme. He is young, studied with Gerhard Weinberger in Detmold and is currently director of church music for the diocese of Göttingen. The Melle organ, built by Christian Vater (and pictured beautifully on the back cover of the CD booklet) dates from 1724 and has had a number of remodelings and reconstruction, most recently in 2000. It is from the Schnitger school of organ-building; indeed, it is thought Vater studied with Schnitger. A lovely instrument.

For organ fanciers who are not familiar with this music, I can give this CD a strong recommendation.

Sprightly tempo appreciated.......2004-04-15

The Pachelbel Canon in D on this recording is really in D. I checked, after reading the other, disgruntled, review.

Not only that, it is also played at a lively tempo, but not too fast.

I was pleasantly surprised, after hearing several other interpretations by well known musicians. I had found the version under Neville Mariner too dreamy and slow for children.

I am buying the CD with several Pachelbel canons because I believe my grandchildren will appreciate it, and my daughter will enjoy hearing other works by the same composer, besides the most popular one.

Definitely, the review with the totally irrelevant material about a swimming pool and so on, can be disregarded.

Whoever this person is, his or her sonic equipment is not in tune with my Yamaha.

D major???.......2001-10-28

Upon recieving this CD from my partner as a gift, I immediatly lept to my CD player with this recording of the immortal Canon in D major. However, after a casual hearing of this recording, I noticed something was wrong. It wasn't until my partner Joseph started complaining about some dead squirrel in our adopted son's pool that I realized the horrible mistake in this recording of Pachelbel's Canon in D.

Any true connoisseur of fine classical music, of which the Canon is a prime example, can eaisly tell that in this recording the Canon was not played in D major. Some dunderheads out there, and in this case I am referring to Bernhard Guller and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, have managed to mangle one of the most impressive and argubly most complex pieces ever written in the Baroque period by playing it in Eb major!

I immediatly brought up my distate with this recording to my partner, who at that time was looking for those useless salad tongs that he had bought so he could remove the dead squirrel from the pool. My partner, not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, later commented that he heard nothing wrong with the recording. Right, and he probably thinks that Bach had talent.

After my partner failed to locate the salad tongs, I used this CD to remove the dead squirrel from the pool. We then started up the gazebo-turned-BBQ-pit to have some good ol' fashioned French roasted squirrel.

The CD now holds my beer off of the table beside me as I write this, forever relegated to the task of serving as a coaster until some other dunderhead picks it up and actually subjects his ear to this monstrosity.

I pity the poor souls whose partners would buy such garbage. Rest assured, music lovers, that my partner slept alone after this incident and will continue to do so until he stops messing around with that darned scooter and gets me a REAL recording of Pachelbel's Canon in 'D' major.

Sublime listening!.......2000-07-12

This is not just music but a collection of some of the best sounds that you will ever hear. Here we have a recording of one of the world's greatest organs. The St. Jocobi organ was first completed in 1693 by the master German organ builder Arp Schnitger. The instrument suffered loss of some of its parts during the World Wars but most of it was carefully stored out of reach of the bombs that destroyed the church building during WWII. Now the organ lives again in its 17th century glory thanks to a diligent restoration carried out by experts. It is played wonderfully by Gustav Leonhardt. The music on this recording is truly sublime and favors our ears as it is played on an organ known to some of the composers featured. Anyone who loves early organ music will surely enjoy this disc. Those who are not yet lovers of early organ music might just be persuaded. The recording employs the latest technology and is of an extremely high quality. The organ has a wide variety of pipes. We hear soft and sweet flutes, nasal but graceful reeds (an endearing trait of the German organs of the 17th and 18th centuries), lovely principals, and bright and shimmering mixtures. The most expansive work on the recording is the "Magnificat on the Sixth Tone" of Scheidemann. This piece is a true highlight, displaying some of the organs most beautiful sounds. The Praeludium in d minor of Bruhns is a powerful display, leaving listeners in awe. Leonhardt's playing is admirable due to his excellent articulation, carefully chosen tempi, ingenious choice of stops, and stirring flare imbued into the large scale pieces.
