The Neopolitan Horowitz.......2007-03-08

When Tipo began appearing in the US, the papers hailed her as 'The Neopolitan Horowitz'. Of course, her style is far removed from Horowitz', but the amazing technical facility certainly impressed audiences.

These recordings, made show what the fuss was about. Her Scarlatti is more whimsical and 'brilliant' than her later recordings. This disc, which she recorded in 1955 in a mere 4 hours, was hailed by Newsweek magazine as "the most spectacular record of the year".

In the Mozart concertos she really shines, giving performances that sparkle and constantly make happy discoveries in the music without being in the least precious.

The sound quality is reasonable.

Dinu Lipatti, the greatest interpreter of Bach on the Piano.......1998-11-11

Dinu Lipatti, largely forgotten by classical music listeners, was considered by many of his contemporaries to be the greatest pianist of his day. What he could coax out of a piano was so sublime that even his fellow pianists felt out of his league. Although his presentation is effortlessly note perfect, unlike the pyrotechnics of today's flashier performers, Lipatti puts tremendous feeling into his performances. His command and vision is stunning, especially in the Bach Partita #1, perhaps his single greatest performance . Although playing Bach has always been a severe test of both technique and imagination, Lipatti takes this piece to another realm, where the mathematical precision of Bach and the "volcano" (Pablo Casals) of emotion that lies under the surface of the notes merge to produce a Bach no one has heard before or since. Never has such a warm, sympathetic reading of Bach been so completely consistent with his rigorous underpinnings. A stunning achievement. Lastly, if you can get a copy of his live, final concert at Besancon (he died of Leukemia at age 33), it contains the same content as this CD, but it also has the presence and depth one would expect from such a live recording. It is every bit as amazing, if not more so, as this recording. It also contains the Waltzes by Chopin (also amazing, and in fact the pieces Lipatti was most famous for); it is missing one waltz because he was so weak from his sickness that he had to be carried off the stage before he collapsed of exhaustion. He died two months later.

Ney's magic.......2001-07-04

Elly Ney was a disciple of both Theodor Leschetizky and of Emil von Sauer. Leschetizky was one of the most important piano teachers that have ever existed, among his former pupils one can mention Alexander Brailowsky, Mark Hambourg, Ignaz Jan Paderewski, Arthur Schnabel, Benno Moisewitch and Horzowski. Ney was a pianist with a rare sensibilty and she was highly reveared in Europe counting among her admirers Wilhelm Kempff. After WWII her career somehow decayed, but the recordings included in this CD's show her at her best, unfortunatelly the sound quality is limited since they date form the 1930's. If you are looking for a good sound quality stay away from this CD, but if you want to hear performances from a pianist of rare sensibility you will not be dissapointed. The Strauss' Burleske was the first recording ever made of this work, and the Beethoven and Mozart concertos are really excellent. The Beethoven concerto and the Burleske are accompanied by orchestras conducted by Willem van Hoogstraten, who not only was Ney's husband but an interesting musician as well. Hoogstraten was for more that ten years conductor of the Portland Orchestra and for two seasons (1923-1925) co-conductor of the New York Philharmonic with his countryman Willem Mengelberg.
