This compilation features excerpts from some of the greatest sacred works in the literature--including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Missa solemnis, and Verdi's Requiem--all led by Robert Shaw. The selections, from recordings made between 1983 and 1997 by Shaw and various ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, are presented more or less in order of their composition, from Vivaldi's Gloria to Arvo Pärt's Magnificat. Especially thrilling is the complete "Gloria" from the Missa solemnis, 17 minutes of sheer grandeur, and the Sanctus movements from the Requiems of Verdi and Maurice Duruflé. --Ted Libbey

I enjoyed this CD very much. It is just beautiful music.
Robert Shaw Choruses At Their Best!.......2004-09-20
If Sir Robert were still alive, & breathing, I believe he would be caught-up making music with this awesome, majestic, mystical GLORIA, Sanctus, Hallelujah Masterworks! I lucked-up on this old collection in the few classical CD'S in Best Buy!
At first hearing they sent me back into the 1970's when most of Church Musicians majored in Vivaldi's Gloria, the Sanctus of Bach's B-Minor Mass, the Long, georgeous GLORIA, Missa Solemnis, Beethoven, and incomparable Alleluia by Randall Thompson.
During a visit of Hurricane IVAN'S rushing winds and torrents of rain, I stayed on back roads of Decatur and East Atlanta! Also keeping alert & relaxed listening to Robert Shaw re-inventing his Choral Mystique! In slowly moving traffic of 2++ hours to Fayetteville, I kept alert singing along at 30 mph, wrapped in his quiet heavenly beauty of Koplov's "Heavenly Light!"
That mysteriously spiritual power of glorious choruses provided the same resourceful sounds of his eternal music-making from rehearsals in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Westminster Choir College and Avery Fischer Hall concerts in NYC! (1975-1985)
Only the early 33 1/3 recordings of the Robert Shaw Chorale in his Spirituals and Irish Songs, later Handel's Messiah and Bach B-Minor Mass were forerunners to his awesome listing of repeated Grammy winners, now printed in digital stereo color and sound! Hooray for Sir Robert and his rich chorale legacy... Let's keep them singing for Eternity! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Glorious.......2000-06-30
If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's Gloria or portions of Handel's Messiah, one cannot help but become enthralled with the recordings of Shaw's interpretations of those works. Although Shaw never followed through on his early-life ambition to be a minister, I still believe he does so and perhaps to a greater extent through his music ministry. One cannot help but feel closer to understanding what heaven is about after having finished listening to this CD. This is well worth buying for it will live up to the english interpretation of its Latin title: Glorious.

Customer Reviews:
inspired performance !!!.......2001-09-02
this collection deserves more than 5 stars.peter maag and the philharmonica hungarica are in top form.this is the best ever of schubert's fifth and eigth i have ever listened to.it is not karl bohm or leonard bernstein or george szell or lorin maazel.
truly the hungarians inspired by maag easily beat all the other top orchestras.
the orchestral texture is transparent with a perfect balance among the string sections ,the woodwind and the brass sections.peter maag obviously loves this music and brings out the heavenly beauty ,the pathos and the monumental dramatic quality of these works.
just listen to schubert's fifth second movement which ends with a heart rending cello phrase.
it is a shame that the well established record companies have not thought it fit to record more of peter maag.in my opinion he is one of the greatest ever conductors.
i will not exchange these performances for any other!

Customer Reviews:
great price but there are some drawbacks.......2006-08-30
This is good but be aware that the German mass on this recording was recorded in 1962 and the rest of the masses in 1978. The sound quality isn't the best in the world but I'm sure to most people it will be tolerable. It's just that after hearing such good quality new recordings it's kind of hard to stomach an old analog recording.
The performance is good, probably not the best though. The singers seem to really over power the instruments. some times the instruments just seem a little small. There is some background noise just like on most recordings but it's nothing terrible.
I actually recommend the Brilliant Classics Schubert Masses. The sound quality is much better in that box set and it only costs a couple of dollars more.
Possibly Schubert's most intimate work!.......2005-10-07
These masses are Schubert's hymn-like works with an enormous melodic charm. He composed part of them to texts of Johann Philip Neumann, who was a professor at the Vienna Polytechnical Institute, and they were intended for use by the students congregation at that Institute. He finished the first mass when he was only 17 and the last one just a few months before he died, so his masses, the latin as well as his german ones, really span over a relatively long time of the creative part of his career.
Technically speaking these masses seem easy, but they surely rank among Franz Schubert's best works. They certainly constitute a very mature body of work, most part of which written by the great composer towards the end of his short but very prolific life. The choral part is not overly complex, and so is the orchestral one. To me the beauty of these works is in the interaction between choral, solos and orchestral sections. Sometimes a simple work can be magnificent.
I'm not a regular churchgoer, but just like another reviewer here at Amazon.com, I happened to attend a few masses in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg, Germany, more than a decade ago. Masses in german and english, the softly spoken magic spell accompanied by Schubert's masses. What a blissful atmosphere! When I think about it, it's very difficult to describe that feeling now, but I guess "intimate" would be the word that comes closest to it.
Franz Schubert's "Deutsche Messe".......2000-06-16
I have listened to the "Deutsche Messe" over and over again. I also had the rare opportunity to be at a mass in a church in Germany where an orchestra played Franz Schubert's "Deutsche Messe". Wow! What an experience! The music pieces have so much depths and devotion in them. You can close your eyes and feel what Franz Schubert must have felt.

As good as it gets -- in THIS life!.......2006-04-13
Four years ago today (April 12) my Mom died. Dad says she passed out into the next life, listening through headphones on her 'Walkman,' to a tape of her children's choir of forty years earlier, performing (amazingly for mostly 12-year-olds) in four-part harmony, this most famous 'chorus' by Handel.
I'll always be partial to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's delivery of the "Hallelujah Chorus" -- backed by my favorite orchestra, the Philadelphia Symphony, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. But this version has displaced all others in my heart . . . apart from the choir of young voices that will forever sing, in my mind's ear, the most perfect "Hallelujah."
----
This rendition of Handel's masterwork -- by Robert Shaw's 200 assembled voices, plus the Cleveland Orchestra -- is a brilliantly-engineered recording; with the sort of spatial definition that places the listener right in the midst of the most glorious music this side of heaven.
Equally breathtaking highlights on this CD include "The Creation: The Heavens are Telling," by Haydn, and Mozart's "Lacrimosa." An extravagance of riches!
Oh yes, and the tempo of Handel's masterwork, as conducted by Shaw, seems perfect to my ears . . . which is to say EXACTLY the pace at which our kids' choir of forty years ago was conducted by "Mom" -- Grace Blackburn of Ottawa Canada.
----
On this anniversary of her passing (into a world where we may hope even more celestial music reigns) a friend who sang alongside me in that children's choir -- Brenda Zanin of Ottawa recalls,
"When you are 12 years old, your perspective of grown-ups tends to be pretty narrow.
"To me, Grace Blackburn was the soft-spoken choir director at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, who persisted week-after-week, to teach us Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. We had no written music in our hands. She taught us the high notes and ethereal phrases by rote, in small groups . . . a few bars at a time . . . until we knew it in our sleep.
"We were just kids, so, deprived of proper tenors, she transposed those lines for our higher voices. And it worked. To this day I can sing the entire chorus verbatim - and did so this past Easter in my church choir.
"What a delightful surprise to read (in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper) that all these years later, the recording we were so proud of way back in the early 1960s played softly in Mrs. Blackburn's ears as she passed on.
"And what an eye-opener to discover that this kindly lady had made such significant contributions to the wider community (including a United Nations environmental award).
"I am sure she is enjoying the heavenly music of an infinitely greater chorus, while here below we continue to enjoy the many fruits of the labors from which she now rests."
"symphonic in scale & eternal in their appeal".......2000-12-04
RCA Victor presents Robert Shaw the preeminent choral conductor of our time and The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus in sacred choral works that are symphonic in scale, and eternal in their appeal. Newly remastered with state-of-the-art 24/96 technology, this superb album presents the magic of these performances in the widest range of musical reproduction ever.
If you love the sound of a full chorus, this CD is for you - made up of students, secretaries, teachers, doctors, engineers, mechanic - all races and national origins. They sing for the "love" of it, and when they perform the "MESSIAH:HALLELUJAH CHORUS" by Handel, at that moment when all 200 voices abound you feel the heaven-sent with all it's glory...as in "THE CREATION: THE HEAVENS ARE TELLING" by Haydn, "pure" power and heart-felt emotion as only a large choral gathering can interpret.
It's difficult to imagine - these masterpieces from world renown composers - Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Bach were recorded in 1961, the clarity is astounding...a must have for your ever-growing collection of music that will live on forever and forever - HALLELUJAH!

Religious Hit Parade.......2002-04-08
I was torn between four and five stars for this album. In the end, it got five because of the inclusion of the two wonderful traditional Jewish songs - "Alvinu Malkeinu" and "Tzadik Katamar". They are the highlights of the disc for me (no, I'm not Jewish, but that doesn't matter) - and really, where else are you going to find this kind of music?
This CD serves the same purpose as a sampler disc - enticing the listener to buy the full works - Handel's "Messiah", Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", Faurè's Requiem Mass, and what have you. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of "Messiah" - not even the Hallelujah Chorus in its entirety - before I purchased this CD. Now I realize what I've been missing and checked it out from the local library. Ditto for the unearthly beauty of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" - check out the samples of "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" and "Quae Moerebat" if you don't believe me.
The quality of the performers is excellent, and how can ANYONE pass up that price???? That is what ultimately clinched it at a solid five stars. I consider this CD one of my greatest finds - you will too.
Very uplifting.......2000-05-21
This is a great bargain CD with excerpts from some familiar classics and some lesser known treasures. Many listeners, including myself, will want to own the complete performance of most of these works, but this CD is a good way to hear composers such as Lewandowski and Pergolesi, whose works may not already be a part of your music library. The opening movement of Vivaldi's Gloria as performed by the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus conducted by Robert Shaw is terrific. True to his reputation as one of the greatest choral conductors of all time, everything sounds just right under his baton. The other performances were not as highly distinguished in my humble opinion, but overall most of them were good, and many were excellent. For Handel's Messiah though, I highly recommend Sir Georg Solti conducting the Chicago Symphony and Chorus, starring Kiri Te Kanawa (once you hear the Solti version, most other Messiah performances don't feel as moving). And if you enjoyed this CD, you'll really love Kiri Te Kanawa's Ave Maria album.
Overall, this compilation is a really great selection of powerful, serene, and uplifting music. Some of the other CD's in the 25 Favorites series are not very satisfying, but this one is a real winner!

Customer Reviews:
Schubert's "poor relations" deserve a hearing.......2006-05-22
It was good of EMI to extract some choice music from Sawallisch's 7-CD set comprising all of Schubert's sacred choral works. There are seven Masses plus miscellaneous smaller works; none are well represented in concert, being almost solely confined to church services. Representation on CD is also a bit sparse.
Nor do the Masses contain Schubert's consistently best music. As The Gramophone said in reviewing the entire EMI set, these are the poor relations among the composer's output. But here we have three of the very best, sung by an excellent choir, world-class soloists, and Sawallisch at his Kapellmeister best. This is lyrical, gentle, reverent music, not quite up to Haydn's great late Masses but with lots of treasurable moments.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06
Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.
You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:
- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér
Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.
As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.
Will not buy this.......2007-03-16
I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.
Worth it!.......2006-12-19
One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.
Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19
Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.
Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14
This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)
