Customer Reviews:
Silly Dutch music from my own country.......2000-11-16
So this is faceless: something German, something French. Sometimes mere pastiche. I really don't know why Chandos chose this composers to start a Dutch music series with (the other disc is with dull symphonies by Hol, again very pale music). I can imagine a little more rewarding repertoire than this (van Gilse, Badings, Zweers and Dopper sometimes). And if you insist: there're 3 rewarding composers who could be given some exposure: Diepenbrock (met Mahler and some of his fine orchestral songs are available on Chandos too), Pijper - what's in a name - whose music has balls and Badings who, they say, was persona non grata after WWII.
With Voormolen there were times that the oboeconcerto could be heard throughout our little country, but those times are over. We're lucky now because we have learnt a thing or two. Enter this recording. To everybody has to be proven that we must forget this music, it's an irritating work - especially in this recording where the oboes sit on your chair and the orchestra is on the other side of the street - with constantly tweaking and clicking oboe-noises going from nowhere to anywhere.
It's the typical Dutch atmosphere exploited here which I hate so much. Let's hope Chandos will find more rewarding and more lasting repertoire for this series which will be concluded in 2004 when our exemplary Residentie Orkest will be 100 years of age.
