Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

For a composer who is (now) recognizably part of the 20th-century classical canon, the French émigré Edgard Varèse's output was astoundingly meager. Just 15 compositions from his entire life (he destroyed the compositions from his early years, and was a merciless editor of his own material in general) made it out to the listening world. Varèse was caught in the chasm between the music of yesterday and the music of tomorrow: scoring music for modified theremin, steamboat whistles, or air sirens, all balanced with the force of a large orchestra; writing pieces based on the flows of water and wind because that's what shapes the earth; using the concepts of chemical reactions and specific gravity as a basis for his music. Using extremes of contrast, dissonance, and variety in sound, Varèse's pieces had power in the way he attacked and shaped the sound he imagined. From Ionisation (1929), scored almost entirely for unpitched percussion, to the electronic-only, three-dimensionally produced Poeme Electronique (1958), he's provided a foundation that many genres, musicians, and composers were to build from not only for the next 40 years, but inevitably beyond. --Robin Edgerton

5 out of 5 stars Superb with just one reservation.......2006-11-10

This complete works of Varèse, superbly performed and recorded, is a fine accomplishment. My only disappointment was its version of Poème Elèctronique being the sole representation of that ground-breaking work that still holds up for me today as one of the finest pieces of electronic music yet created. It is interesting to be able to hear the version in this collection, which appears to be a loving restoration of what must have been primarily the raw, performing version, to be further enhanced during its performances in a very large space? What I miss in the present version is the more clearly heard textures of its huge sound palette; the resonant and often humerous interplay between them, and its dramatic sweep as it was presented on a sparcely documented stereo mix that first appeared on a Columbia Records LP, later reissued on a CD, now out of print. That one is surely more like an actual performance, presumably mixed to re-create as well as possible then what it might have sounded like over its four hundred loudspeakers in the Philips Pavillion. I hope there will be further reissues. To me the CBS version's drama and energy are more like that of the performances of the other pieces in this wonderful Complete Works set. -Curt Wittig

5 out of 5 stars Go ahead, test your intelligence..........2006-06-18

Frank Zappa used to play Varese to test the intelligence of his friends, and most of them used to look at him like he was "out of his f---ing mind" as he put it. As a major Zappa fan, I bought this compliation, and I love every minute of it. This 2 CD set contains all of Varese's work (needless to say, Edgar wasn't very prolific). You really hear Varese's influence in Zappa's work. Some favorite pieces are Deserts, Poem Electronique, and Un Grand Sommeil Noir (Original Version). Varese's music reminds me of universes being created, in all their violence, beauty, and glory. Instruments crashing down upon one another. This music is reminiscent of Zappa's Weasels Ripped My Flesh and his orchestral work especially. Varese is one of the great American composers, like Aaron Copland, John Cage, and Conlon Nancarrow. Superb....

5 out of 5 stars The definitive recordings........2005-11-09

Riccardo Chailly once said Varèse was going to be the Brahms of the XXI Century. I really don't know if he will be right or wrong, specially because of the very conservative auditoriums we have all around the world, but it should be this way, as the french composer has died too many years ago and his music should be understood but most of the public. It's sad to know that composers, like the own Mahler said, use to be years, decades, even centuries in advance to the general public .

Anyway, it's very important for the popular knowledge of this composers to have recordings like this, in which everything works perfectly as if it was a clock. After many years having some good recordings conducted by Boulez (Sony) and Nagano (Erato) mainly, we have now the possibility of listening one of the most musical and technical orchestra & baton of this time: The Concertgebouworkest and Riccado Chailly.

Most of the versions in this 2CDs set are the best I know, specially the orchestral works, played with conviction and precision by the Concertgebouworkest, an orchestra that had some problems with Mr.Chailly when they begin to play this, for them, `rare' music. The way Arcana sounds its incredible, full of power, mistery and perfection, the performing of Ameriques is breathtaking and I can only compare it with the truly outstanding version by Pierre Boulez with the CSO for DG. Deserts is a new dimension in Chailly's hands, really terrible and full of dark emotions.

Of course, there are little things that could be a bit better, like the Spanish sung in Ecuatorial, better sung in Nagano's version, but generally the performing is marvellous and the instrumental and ondes Martenot's playing in this piece is perfect in Chailly's version.

The ASKO Ensemble versions are outstanding too, showing a very modern Varèse. The performing of Ionisation, that great jewel, listened with a good Hi-Fi system is a experience not to be lost.

The recordings are very good, not outstanding, as it sounds like distant sometimes, but clear and with good definition, of course better with good electronics.

Booklet and presentation of the box is marvellous too; as it has to be in real event in recorded music in the last decades.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Splitting Music.......2002-06-25

First, let me state that I am a long-time Varese fanatic. I first heard Ionisation live at a contemporary music concert in my town when I was 12, and I was hooked. I immediately bought the old Robert Craft double album on Columbia and played it until there were scratches on the scratches. So I was overjoyed to see a modern "complete" recording with up to date sonics. For the most part, I haven't been too disappointed with the performances either.

Chailly is great on much of this music. Ameriques and Arcana are sonic extravagazas. And this is the best recording I've heard of Nocturnal and Ecuatorial. Chailly does a good job with the chamber pieces of the 20s and 30s, though I agree with other reviewers, Boulez is much clearer on Ionisation. Chailly misses some of my favorite parts, and I find it hard to hear the first snare drum theme. (I'm also quite partial to Craft's version, but I don't think it's available anymore.)

I also must add to the chorus of exceptions on the questionable material. The orhestrated version of the solo song has no place on this CD. It doesn't sound like Varese, more like Debussy, and though the song is quite impressionistic, I think we presume too much to orchestrate it and pass it off as "complete" Varese. And neither Tune Up nor Dance for Burgess really add much to our understanding of Varese, and are of questionable value. I suspect that Varese would have destroyed them completely had he been able. Much better to have a recording of the revised version of Ameriques. The revision is so extensive, that a side by side comparison would be illuminating.

All in all, I like this CD. Chailly's take on Varese is big and passionate, something that I think both Boulez and Craft miss. Abravanel comes close to this passion, but Chailly wins because of the gorgeous sonics. I highly recommend this CD to those interested in exploring the unique sound world of Varese.

5 out of 5 stars An aural knockout.......2002-02-01

Here are two discs with some of the most exciting 20th-century music around. Chailly and the Concertgebouw give definitive readings of Varèse's complex pieces, some written for a huge orchestra, and recorded in typically opulent London sound.

My favorites are, without a doubt, "Ameriques" and "Arcana," two explosive showpieces that will give your sound system quite a workout. But far from being merely loud, the scores have many beautiful textures (including quiet ones) scattered throughout the orchestra, and Chailly captures much of the glittering detail.

I even like "Tuning Up," which may seem like a less substantial work to most ears. To be fair, if the piece is not the last word in Varèse's imagination, it is clever enough for its short duration, and as with everything on this disc, the orchestra sounds superb and totally undaunted. Their virtuosity is both satisfying and thrilling, especially in such seldom-performed music.

Make sure your neighbors are away before turning up the performance of "Ameriques," though - the last few pages will blow your roof off.

I suspect Varèse would have loved this collection.

So is generally regarded as a peak in Gabriel's recording career, notable both for its solid set of songs and lush yet musicianly production. For Gabriel, who'd put his music in theatrical contexts ever since his days with Genesis, the modern sound of So (co-produced with Daniel Lanois) was itself a dramatic conceit that effectively played off the more organic roots of many of its songs. The album's big hit was "Sledgehammer," the English rocker's somewhat stilted take on the Stax/Volt style of rhythm & blues. Gabriel was much more powerful on his own art-rock songs, such as "Red Rain," which evoked nuclear ruin with its cascading rush of guitars and synthesizers. "Don't Give Up" is perhaps Gabriel's best ballad, with Kate Bush's heavenly second vocal enough to give anybody encouragement. But the song that best exploited So's blend of technology and soul is "In Your Eyes," a beguiling rhythmic tapestry in which Gabriel duets with Youssou N'dour. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars Former Genesis frontman Gabriel's arguable finest hour as a solo artist 20 plus years later.......2007-06-22

Former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel released his fifth studio solo album So in May of 1986.
1986 was the year of Genesis past and present. Ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett released his hit collaboration with Yes guitarist Steve Howe called GTR's self-titled album. Also, Hackett and Gabriel's ex-colleages which were the rest of Genesis (Phil collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) released the hugely successful Invisible Touch under the Genesis moniker.
A month before Invisible Touch, Gabriel released So which was a year in the making but was well worth the time it took to create this now classic to rock history.
Gabriel and his supreme team of session players, including the reliable Tony Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitar plus Police drummer Stewart Copeland and drummers Manu Katche and Rick Marotta.
The thunderous "Red Rain" is a stellar opener to this album and is possibly his best solo track. Next is the smash hit "Sledgehammer" (with Gabriel going a bit funky on the R&B thing) and was rightfully a #1 hit. Ironically, it KO-ed his ex-bandmembers' "Invisible Touch" single out of #1 in the US. Also this track's video was groundbreaking with its animation effects. Next is the excellent duet with Kate Bush called "Don't Give Up" (w/ Kate Bush) which is a stellar song and one of the best duets I ever heard. we end the first half with the atmospheric sounding "That Voice Again" which was a rock radio hit yet didn't get released to pop radio.
"Mercy Street" starts the second half off (it was "In Your Eyes" but Gabriel changed the CD tracklisting for the remaster) and is a nice piece. We follow with another big hit called "Big Time" which featured Stewart Copeland on drums and was also known for its classic video. The original vinyl album's closer "We Do What Were Told" is reminiscent of Gabriel's darker material. It's brief, lyrically simple, but very, very haunting. The original CD and cassette closer "This Is The Picture" is a terrific, light-groove collaboration with avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson which combined singing with spoken word, and the funky guitar of Nile Rodgers. The original album's second half opener and now album closer "In Your Eyes" is the album's most well known hit. This track was a #1 on US rock radio and is a nice love song and featured The Call's Michael Been and Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr on backing vocals plus African singer Y'oussor N'Dour helping out at the end.
So became peter gabriel's biggest selling solo album reaching #2 on the Billboard album charts and has sold FIVE million copies to date in the US alone. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year, but it lost to Paul Simon's Graceland (why in the Blue Hell was this dude still winning Grammies when he was past his prime). However, Gabriel did win Video of the Year for "Sledgehammer" which ironically beat his old Genesis mates' "Land of Confusion" video. Aside sales, So proved Peter Gabriel was a force to be recoked with.
RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars not only popular but excellent.......2007-06-17

Luis Mejia (son)- Peter Gabriel have shown us that he can stay on the map even after quiting a band such famous as Genesis, and this album shout that on every song. This album has everything; Rock pieces like Red Rain, a song full of emotions about a dream of swimming on red water, pop songs like Sledgehammer, an incredibly famous song with a stunning music video whic won 6 prices on the MTV music awards of that time, Don't Give Up, that is also on the vocals with Kate Bush, In Your Eyes, his most famous love song, Mercy Street, Big Time, a catchy, fun and cheerful song alike with Sledgehammer; the album also contains new experimentations seen before in Security (The Family And The Fishing Net, San Jacinto) like We Do What We're Told (Milgram 37) about the famous experiment of Stanley Milgram, That Voice Again and This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds).

It has everything and the album will be frozen in time as Peter Gabriel's best album.

GABRIEL'S BLOCKBUSTER ALBUM.
RUINED BY MEDIOCRE SOUND QUALITY, KNOCKING A FIVE STAR CLASSIC DOWN TO THREE STARS. DO NOT BUY THE ORIGINAL, BUT GET THE REMASTERED VERSION INSTEAD.

Released in 1986, this was Gabriel's blockbuster album. And it deserved it. This is just great from beginning to end. It features great collaborations with Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson.

Unfortunately, coming out in 1986, the CD sound quality was mediocre. This was very suprising for Gabriel who had embraced digital technology years earlier. The sound is flat with limited dynamic range.

Many of the early CD's had mediocre sound quality, which gave rise to the vinyl snobs who thought CD's could never sound as good as LP's. But, it was just a bad translation to the digital technoology. Today, CD's sound much better than they did 20 years ago. Which is why you see so many "remaatered" CD's today. That includes the complete Gabriel catalog.

Not only being the most popular Gabriel CD, it is his best. That is saying a lot since, he has had many very good CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Great album again from PG.......2007-03-15

The very good tracks on this cd are "Red Rain" and "Mercy Street"
Great commercial success with "Sledgehammer", "Don't give up", "In your eyes" and "Big Time"..These four songs have been heard to often maybe, but still good occasionnaly to listen to. Two weak songs close the album, "We do what we're told" and "This is the picture", I go with four star for this album.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Chamber Music with Clarinet.......2003-05-23

I have often thought that if I took up a wind instrument, it would be the clarinet. It is possibly the most perfectly constructed and smoothly functioning of all the wind instruments. It has an almost four-octave range (by virtue of it being overblown at the twelfth, not the octave like all the other orchestral winds), a very wide dynamic range from the merest whisper to a clarion tone (in fact, the term 'clarion' and the term 'clarinet' come from the same root), incredible flexibility (closest of any wind to that of the violin), mimics the human voice in its range and sound and, finally, has the smoothest most ingratiating tone (as Mike Myers's 'Linda Richman' would say, 'Like buttah!'). [Please don't be mad at me, all you oboists, bassoonists and flutists out there!]

Here we have core clarinet chamber music repertoire:

Beethoven: Trio in B flat, Op. 11
Brahms: Trio in A minor, Op. 114
Berg: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 5
Mendelssohn: Konzertstücke 1 & 2 for Clarinet, Basset-Horn and Piano, Opp. 113 & 114

The clarinetist is one of the best - Peter Schmidl, principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic. His colleagues - Madoka Inui, piano; Teodora Mileva, cello; and Pierre Pichler, basset-horn, are fully his equals. The playing is suave, the ensemble tightly coordinated and the recorded sound clear and life-like. This is 68 minutes of unalloyed beauty. Naxos has come up with another winner.

The jewel box liner and booklet have the designation 'Philharmonic Soloists' emblazoned on them. Can we hope that various other of the Vienna Philharmonic's principals will have similar discs in the future?

Recommended.

The sound of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has committed me like a guardian angel since I was a little child. Listening with my parents to the radio transmissions of Salzburg Festival (we were positively unable to buy tickets) I got my first idea of a better world. Now listening to the first CD of a new edition with soloists of VPO, I felt the same calm euphory. Peter Schmidl, VPO's first clarinet, has taught two generations of young musicians. His recording of Mozart's clarinet concert under Leonard Bernstein has become part of musical history. On this CD he performs with brilliant young partners chamber music by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Alban Berg. Warmth and sensuality of his tone are unbeatable even by other world champions like Meyer, de Payer or Leister. The piano part is admirably played by Madoka Inui - brilliance, elegance and intellectual analysis of her interpretaion are first class. So: Who ever calls himself a clarinet maniac - and this is not difficult, because no other wind instrument is closer to human voice - should listen into that recording. The price is a sensation and the booklet, written by Schmidl himself, too. Chamber music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, and by the way............2006-02-18

Hey, Bill Bennett, if you have a crappy sound system all you are going to hear is just that, no matter what music you are playing. My system is based around the $6000 Denon AVR-5805 with Polk speakers at $2000 each, believe me when I say, you are blowing smoke out your butt. This disc sounds incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Who's getting ripped off?!?! Buy this disc if you have an SACD player.......2005-11-02

Do not listen to Bill Bennett's reviews of Peter Gabriel's re-released SACD albums. The albums come close to matching the bit rate of the original analogue studio masters, this cannot be done with regular CDs.
If you don't appreciate the difference in sound on this disc then perhaps you do not have the right equipment ot play it. It's one thing to have an SACD player, but do you have a good receiver, good cables and good speakers?
I listened to So and Us on Paradigm Monitor 11 speakers with a Pionner DV-45 DVD Audio/SACD player, Pioneer VSX-1014TX receiver and Excelsior 2.4 speaker cables. It had me in goosebumps.
It's nice to hear a great 5.1 mix, but when you have the right equipment you will garner a whole new appreciation for two channel music. When I close my eyes I could swear that my entire 7.1 system was blasting away, but it's only my two Paradigm speakers.
If you're going to get serious about audio, then you'll start to appreciate stereo SACD discs and Advanced Resolution Stereo DVD-Audio discs using 24-bit/192Hz audio.

1 out of 5 stars Don't get ripped off!.......2004-07-20

This is just a re-hash of the stereo CD, it's not "re-mastered" for multi-channel playback. You'd be much happier with Pink Floyd's 30th Anniversary Edition of the album "Dark SIde Of The Moon" or the Eagles "Hotel California" or Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"; these artists took the time and spent the money to do SACD right. Peter Gabriel is just trying to suck more money out of your pocket without any value added in return. Sure it's a slightly better recording than the original CD but certainly not worth buying again.

5 out of 5 stars Gabriel's greatest achievement!.......2004-05-06

After so many years and only two albums since then, Peter Gabriel's artistic and commercial pinnacle "So" remains my favorite album of his on so many levels.

Many seem to have labeled this album as a sellout album but those people couldn't be more wrong on that. This album is miles away from being a sellout and almost more like someone who has found his place at home. This album to me is the best example of how an artist can actually go pop, if you can call it that, but actually benefit both artistically and commercially. This album has a much earthier and much easier style to digest than his previous two albums especially his third album from 1980. It is also his most accessible album of his entire career although not necessarily his happiest album even though his most joyful and happiest songs are on here. The only really bright and sunny songs on here are "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" but we've heard them many times so there's no need to go into them.

Most of these songs have now made it onto the "Shaking The Tree" and "Hit" collections but with the exceptions of "Red Rain" and "Big Time", they are butchered which doesn't work too well for them and thus the originals are much better. "Red Rain" is the best track on this album. For such a straight-out popular track "Red Rain" completely throws all of it's peers right into the trash can. The song is a powerful, passionate wash of synthesizers, deep melody, intense mood and a very dramatic backdrop bringing to mind images of a massive rainstorm and the sun breaking out when the song ends. To me, this song is commercial pop at it's absolute best. No one has made popular music sound so good. "Don't Give Up" is one of the most encouraging songs that I've ever listened to. Having been going through some very emotionally turbulent times recently, this song has great meaning to me. "That Voice Again" is one of the most unique sounding songs ever done, especially by 1986 standards. I really love the lyrics too plus the really unique chord changes too. I still get some chills when listening to this track.

"In Your Eyes" is one of the best love songs Gabriel has ever composed and remains so to this day. I have a lot of fond memories of hearing this track a lot back during my childhood and today it's still one of my favorite songs of his. It's an absolutely amazing song with amazing keyboards and showcases the increasing African influence which has been a part of Gabriel's music for a long time even by this point and towards the ending features Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour. In certain ways, it's nice that this track, being at the ending ends the album on a positive note but it just feels weird being at the end. I liked it much better in the middle but that's just my opinion.

"Mercy Street" is arguably one of the sexiest songs that has ever been written. Forget "Sledgehammer" MS is the best sex-song ever written even if it's not explicit at all. The song is a very hauntingly beautiful quiet storm-like track with a very dark but calm atmosphere and really amazing lyrics. The song is a tribute to the late Anne Sexton and the song is a masterpiece. I'll never forget listening to this song once during a walk many years ago.

There are two mysterious tracks that truly are just exquisite. "We Do What We're Told" spooked the daylights out of me when first listening to it. The song is a ghostly track with a dark and damp kind of "Birdy" like atmosphere like as if one were walking on the streets on a damp foggy night by the blue-white streetlights and then seeing spirits drifting overhead. This song evokes such images especially with the distant chorus singing "We Do What We're Told" and the song growing more dramatic and intense. Peter Gabriel's lines when they come in are just haunting and amazing. "This Is The Picture" also as "Excellent Birds" is a very odd and peculiar track with a slightly industrial sound and an eerie feel. In some ways, this song has a lot of the sounds that would've come from the "Birdy" soundtrack and in fact could've fit on that soundtrack too.

The remastered edition of this album cuts both ways in my opinion. The sound quality of the original older CD edition was already great to begin with especially for an album recorded in the mid 1980s but this remastered edition makes it sound even better and much better detailed too. For the SACD edition though, you need a CD player that can play SACDs because if you don't then it won't work. If you don't have one though, the regular remastered edition will do just fine. The downside unfortunately to this re-issued edition is that I for one wasn't too thrilled with "In Your Eyes" being moved to the last track position. I feel that I'm in the minority on this but I enjoyed this album ending on a mysterious note with "We Do What We're Told" and "This Is The Picture" both of which are eerie and haunting reminiscent of the darkness of "Birdy". WDWWT I feel really suffers from the track re-shuffling. This song in its new position robs this chilling classic of much of it's power. I enjoyed it in it's original position. While I take back my old comment about not wasting one's time on this remastered edition, I would NOT recommend throwing the old edition out for the two mysterious tracks I mentioned really are the best as the closer songs on this album. At the same time though, I can now appreciate the new track listing even though the original listing remains superior in my opinion.

Aside from the blunder done with the re-issuing, "So" is one of the greatest albums that has ever been put out and deserves a place in any true music fans collection. No one has ever toyed with pop music in such a sophisticated style the way Gabriel did on here.

4 out of 5 stars So, brought to life.......2004-04-25

While this is not Peter Gabriel's finest album, it is certainly his most accessible, with hits "Sledgehammer," "Big Time," "In Your Eyes," and "Red Rain." Also features a re-do of Laurie Anderson's "Excellent Birds," retitled "This is the Picture." In keeping with the remastered CD collection, lyrics and photographs are included in a very nice booklet. Also in keeping with the CD reissue, "In Your Eyes" closes out the album, which is Gabriel's preferred order.

The difference in audio quality to the standard CD release is not as striking as some SACDs I've heard, but there is still enough difference to make the purchase worthwhile, especially if you haven't purchased the remastered CD version.

Please note that this is a stereo-only SACD, and requires a SACD-capable player.

4 out of 5 stars Great sounds!.......2006-06-16

Love this CD! Feel in love with it from the first hearing! The Titanic fantasy is wonderful, perhaps a tad long, but wonderful just the same. I got used to the flat high D after a couple hearings. The Hansel und Gretel is nice, but arranged a whole step below the original key, and it looses a little luster. There is a wonderful published 8 part arrangement of this in the original key that I think is better.

The jazz/swing tunes are wonderful. Uses of stopped horn to simulate muted trumpets are quite effective. I also like the use of percussions throughout the disc. I think Caravan is my favorite track.

I just received the Take 9 CD today, and I didn't have the WOW feeling as I didn't when I first heard the London Horn Sound. There are many more tracks on the London CD that I will continue to listen to. The arrangements, I feel, better handle variations of texture and timbre of the homogeneous sound of a horn section. And besides...who cares about the Grand Canyon Suite?? Take 9 arrangement choices are boring.

3 out of 5 stars Its alright.......2005-12-15

This CD has some really beautiful playing, but a lot of the selections are cheesy. i.e. Titanic. They might as well have hired Celine Dion to sing along with them. And although there are some real "wow" moments like when you listen to Caravan for the first time, (The lead horns sound like the trumpet section in a jazz band), overall, the Cd isn't that exciting to listen to more than once. On the other hand, Take 9 is a CD featuring the American Horn Quartet & The Horns of the NY Philharmonic. Not only do they kill the Londoners with their technique and intonation, but the repertoire better suits the medium than lame pop fantasies. Of note is the orchestral transcription of Overture to Candide. I say transcription because yes, they even play the flute and clarinet solos in the correct octave. TAKE 9 Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely Inspirational.......2005-10-11

This is THE CD I listen to on the way to rehearsal. It truly inspires me to do my absolute best! You've got to love Roman Carnival - so excellent! I would recommend this CD to anyone, especially horn and brass players. These performers are just phenomenal. What else is there to say?

5 out of 5 stars Heaven on Earth.......2005-08-02

This CD is incredible. The horn is shown for all it is worth. From the beauty of the "Titanic" Fantasy and Hansel and Gretel to the latin Tico-Tico, jazz of Ellington in Caravan and the incredible rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, the horn proves it is not as limited an instrument as some may think. Both the high and low ends of the horn are highlighted. Simply heavenly. If you like horn playing at all or even if you don't, you will want to give this CD a listen. It is well worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and inspirational listen.......2005-05-06

I love this CD. In addition to showing off some of the finest horn playing I've ever heard, there's something here for every musical taste. My favorite track is without question the Titanic Fantasy...I'm a French horn major at the moment, and whenever I really, really don't want to practice, I pull out this CD and listen to that song. It gets me up and going nine times out of ten. It's worth listening to just to hear that final high D...absolutely heavenly!

5 out of 5 stars Hours of Strange and Wonderful Enjoyment.......2006-07-19

This is a fine collection of the work of the "oddest of Bach's 20-odd children." The intros and commentary by Professor Peter Schickele (University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople) are as sidesplitting as the "music" itself. One learns, for example, that PDQ Bach is the only composer to have written for double reeds -- without the use of oboes or bassoons. . . . Just four of the high(low)lights on this 4-disc set include: "Concerto for Horn and Hardart," "Iphigenia in Brooklyn," "Unbegun Symphony," and "Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle, and Balloons." The PDQ Bach corpus is (fortunately) not exhausted with this box set, so there will likely be others, but this one is terrific and will provide hours of strange and wonderful enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars PDQ Bach lifts the standard of musical humor.......2005-09-16

Excellent 4 CD album from PDQ Bach. Although most music is meant to be humoresque, it is also brilliantly composed/'borrowed' from other composer. Nice item for music lovers that do have sense of, almost British, humor.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any classical fan with a sense of humor.......2005-08-09

This recording is a treasure trove of PDQ Bach music. It is good for many, many laughs, and even my husband who is not well-versed in classical enjoys it to bits. A must-own for anyone who loves the wit of Peter Schickele!

4 out of 5 stars calamity in high C.......2003-04-10

5 out of 5 stars Totally corny and totally classic!.......2002-11-29

What can I say? These attempts to poke fun at classical music and aficionados of the genre are silly, puerile, well-informed, beloved by said aficionados, and utterly hilarious. With a style of humor that is something like a cross between Garrison Keillor, Victor Borge and Monty Python, "Professor" Peter Schickele has been perpetrating the P.D.Q. Bach phenomenon since 1959. "Researching" and sometimes even dressing up as the alleged "last and least" of Johann Sebastian Bach's many children, Schickele has composed, conducted and performed send-ups of various composers and musical styles. This four CD set compiles some the best (or should I say "worst"?) of his efforts. Included are "The O.K. Chorale", "The Unbegun Symphony", "My Bonnie Lass, She Smelleth", "The Seasonings", "Schleptet in E flat minor", "Echo Sonata for Two Unfriendly Groups of Instruments", "Concerto for Horn and Hardart", and my two personal favorites: "Beethoven's Fifth Symphony" (with commentary by sports analysts discussing the "competition" between the conductor and the orchestra) and the hilarious cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn". I can remember my father rolling on the floor in hysterics upon first hearing "Iphigenia", and anyone who is familiar with the Baroque oratorio style of such ubiquitous works as Handel's "Messiah" or J.S. Bach's cantatas will undoubtedly howl too at all the "in jokes". If you're serious about Baroque or classical music, do yourself a favor--let your hair down, get un-serious, and listen to these CDs every once in a while. And may every genre of music be fortunate enough to have a "P.D.Q. Bach" invented for it!

This recording of Sutherland's earliest records is absolutely brilliant!!! She soars through Arne and Handel as if it were the easiest music ever written. Whether you love Joan Sutherland, great singing or both: BUY THIS!

4 out of 5 stars Good Early Sutherland Concert Fare.......2004-03-27

This CD is 67:52 in length and provides 20 songs and arias from three live BBC radio broadcasts, as follows: 2 from the Dec. 1958 broadcast, 8 from the Dec. 1960 broadcast, and 10 from the Dec. 1961 broadcast. None are well-known operatic arias; none have orchestral accompaniment; all but the first two are accompanied by her husband (and teacher/coach/conductor) Richard Bonynge at the keyboard. (The 1961 broadcast is devoted to eighteenth century music and is accompanied by Bonynge on harpsichord.)

The selections are relatively unconventional and unfamiliar--evidently a point with the concert choices made by Sutherland and Bonynge--which will be welcome and refreshing to many. As the notes point out, "This group is typical of the creative programs Sutherland and Bonynge would present for next 30 years. They created 15 different programs and appeared together 129 times in recital. . . . [They] loved to rediscover music and made a specialty of reintroducing the world to many forgotten bonbons, such as these." Dame Joan is in fresh, youthful voice (her international career began with her Covent Garden Lucia in 1959, and she was 32 to 35 when these recitals were broadcast) and sings handsomely throughout, often displaying an attractive mezzo-like fullness and warmth of tone. But Sutherland opera fans may be somewhat disappointed, not in the singing, but in the material here, which calls for little of the full-throated excitement, dazzling pyrotechnics, and brilliant high notes of her best opera recordings; this is more modest fare, and it is, appropriately, more modestly sung. The sound is decent, clean, eminently listenable monaural, no doubt from airchecks, but has this small annoyance: it is afflicted throughout with a residual level of pre-echo and post-echo that is clearly audible on a high-resolution playback system.

The indispensable Sutherland collections (apart from her complete opera recordings) are The Art of the Prima Donna (2 CDs, all 1960 recordings) and La Stupenda (2 CDs, recordings from 1959 to 1988); these should be owned by anyone interested in Sutherland, coloratura soprano singing, or simply great singing. This recital, while enjoyable, is certainly not of comparable importance. But if you are a Sutherland fan and would like to supplement her meatier operatic endeavors with engagingly sung concert fare from the early years of her international career, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars sensational!.......2000-08-10

this are sensational. what singing, what a voice. A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Bravissima!.......1998-11-30

Anyone who question Sutherland as the greatest coloratura soprano of all time should listen to this CD. She sings with complete control in all the arias. I think that Mozart had her in mind for the Constanza aria. Sutherland before 1975 as a dramatic coloratura soprano is simply without peer in this and any other century. A must have!
