The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is the star of this gloriously played and recorded disc. It would be nice to say that Daniel Barenboim has something earth-shattering to say in this music (he probably thinks so), but the truth is that this orchestra can play this music without an conductor, and that's what they seem to be doing. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. It's a fine performance; I just think the players deserve more credit than the guy on the podium. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Nice!.......2002-08-27
Barenboim isn't a great conductor, since he sometimes makes even the Chicago Symphony play in a sloppy manner, but the playing on this live recording is great! There are surprisingly few flaws, and there's a sense of excitement that comes from the energetic playing and Barenboim's nicely thought out phrasing and tempi. The recorded sound itself is clear and vibrant. The 1812 on this CD is very good as well, though it's not quite as good as Fritz Reiner's earlier take, also with the CSO.
Good performance, but noisy.......1998-10-25
Tchaikolvsky 5th is performed gracefully and at a nice pace, however there is way too much background noise, with people coughing and shuffling and moving around. However, the performance of the piece makes it almost worth it putting up with the noise factor.

Customer Reviews:
Masterful, distinctive, outstanding.......2006-11-12
For the Tchaikovsky fan, you may ask yourself, "why bother with a meager Two Piano version of his Symphony No. 5 and ballet excerpts?" I answer with this: "To hear Tchaikovsky's music transcend the orchestra and become pianistic ecstasy." This disc contains all world premiere recordings and taken as piano compositions, they sound extraordinary. Before I laud this CD any further, though, I must declare that I have not heard the 5th Symphony in its original orchestral version before buying this CD. In essence, the Two Piano version exposed me to this great Symphony which is just spellbinding Tchaikovsky. Being familiar with the 4th and 6th symphonies, almost complete opposites of each other, I wasn't sure what I'd get with this. Nevertheless, the music and the superlative efforts of this duo, Dag Achatz and Yukie Nagai, makes this disc recommendable for anyone.
The first three pieces are excerpts from "The Sleeping Beauty" ballet, arranged by Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943). The 'Introduction' is marked with wicked virtuosity in the beginning, which then makes way for a lyrical and angelic 3 minutes. On the piano, it just sounds lovely and at some points, owing to Rachmaninov's superb transcribing, it even sounds orchestral. The next excerpt, the 'Adagio' is seductive, beautiful, and highly romantic. With such music content, the piano only lends to the charm. It recalls the grandeur of Liszt and the poetics of Chopin. The last of the three, the famous 'Valse' is of typical melodic quality that one can expect from Tchaikovsky. It rivals any Strauss waltz, and instantly excites the ears. As far as these "arrangements," Rachmaninov does justice to Tchaikovsky's graceful and energizing music. What seals them off as just splendid recordings is the ability and emotion behind these two pianists. They are completely coordinated, passionate, and very sensitive to the dynamics: pianissimo and fortissimo at just the right parts.
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) provides some exquisite arrangements from "Swan Lake" here. The 'Danse russe' recalls a Renaissance flavor of music in a delightful rhythmic main theme. It's so soft and hypnotizing on the piano. The sporadic parts that surround the gentle dance are just as potent and the whole thing is a successful rendition of Tchaikovsky's ballet excerpt. The 'Danse espagnole' and 'Danse napolitaine' are both bewitching with their simple dance melodies and Tchaikovskian elegance. Debussy never goes overboard with his arrangement and treats the music carefully. Of course, this piano duo can also be commended for their top-notch performance and interpretation.
The main highlight, and indeed, the heart of this CD, belongs to the sublime and powerful execution of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony. This must be one of Tchaikovsky's longest symphonies. At nearly 52 minutes, he summons from the depths of I know not where, a tantalizing stream of serious music. The first movement possesses a robust main theme which forces its way through various musical conflicts; my feelings on it conjure up the idea of a battle of some kind. For 16 minutes Tchaikovsky ventures into strange realms, bringing back reflections, serenades, moments of despair, and an indefinable expression of power. As a piano performance, it's exciting and intense. Although the music itself never explodes into fury, it always seems to be on the brink of it. The second movement, the 'Andante cantabile' is arguably the greatest movement from this symphony. Here we see the precursor of Tchaikovsky's agonizing finale to the "Pathetique." Again, Tchaikovsky nourishes a simple main theme of three notes speaking despair in subtle romantic volumes. The pianists play this movement with solemnity; they play as if they had waited through the whole disc for this moment. This is a 15 minute pianistic tour de force and one of the most heavenly sounding pieces from Tchaikovsky that I've heard.
The last two movements, the 'Valse' and 'Finale' are not as extraordinary as the first two movements of this symphony. The 'Valse' is typical Tchaikovsky: abundant melodies, brilliant passagework and with occasional and unexpected dissonances. The 'Finale' recalls the melancholy of the first movement, but veers into a more triumphant feel at the end. At 13 minutes, Tchaikovsky has a lot to say, and he builds the momentum slowly with thought-provoking variations of his main theme, until the climax ensues. The music itself verges on dark drama and light exultation. In addition to this noble music, the pianists create chromatic sparks and invigorated propulsions. Somehow they also have an impeccable touch. I don't even hear two pianists because they so well; they play as one. For those familiar with this Symphony, don't be put off by this arrangement. It was arranged by Sergei Taneyev who was an ardent supporter and friend of Tchaikovsky, and the music is not only faithfully represented, but also empowered. These two pianists feel the drama, the sorrow, and the affection behind this symphony. Perhaps the arranger, Taneyev, can also be praised for rendering the difficult orchestral part onto the medium of piano. The horn solo from the second movement, for instance, must have proven to be a dilemma. Regardless, he does an excellent job. He also arranged the 4th symphony, which can be found on the Divine Art label with the Goldstone and Clemmow piano duo.
Bottom line: Tchaikovsky fans who want to explore this symphony more intimately will be pleased with this disc. Piano lovers out there can also expect a refreshing and beautiful exhibition here. The ballet excerpts are gratifying and immaculate piano arrangements; the Symphony is phenomenally performed on two pianos and I can recommend this disc to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
A great collection.......2002-05-30
This is one of the best collections I myself have seen of works by Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky is one of my favorite composers, so I've heard many recordings. This one includes the ever-famous violin concerto, the 1812, and many other great works, and with ensembles such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York PO, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, you can't go wrong. If you like Tchaikovsky, or if you would like to get to know some of his music better, this is a great cd to own.

Great Tchaikovsky, Great Orchestras.......1999-12-25
This Tchaikovsky 5th is one of the finest ever recorded. Gramophone magazine also made this statement in a least two separate reviews. The transfer in this 2-for-1 issue sounds cleaner than the CBS Great Performances issue, also currently available. Szell/Cleveland--what more needs to be said here?
The violin concerto is excellently played and the NYPO's accompaniment is first-rate. The second disc contains all the popular non-symphonic works, played with the characteristic authority and beauty Ormandy brought to all his Tchaikovsky at Philly. Excellent buy!
