Good but she's done better.......2005-12-18

The talented Ofra Harnoy has performed better CDs, I recommend her recording of the Vivaldi concertos if you want to hear this brilliant cellist at her best. If you want to hear a cellist play Summertime, Saint-Saens' The Swan or Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee I'd suggest Sara Sant'Ambrogio's "Dreaming" instead.

Album Description

Now largely forgotten, the Ukrainian-born American pianist Mischa Levitzki won a considerable reputation for himself, at first in Europe, then in the United States. His death in 1941 at the age of 42 was overshadowed by world events, but he had by then secured a position for himself as one of the leading virtuosi of the day. Levitzki's recordings demonstrate a formidable technique, always under control, as well as a lovely sound guided by an unerring ear for subtlety and nuance.

Naxos has revived and put at the front of the market the collected recordings of Mischa Levitzki (1898-1941). Not even my wrinkled ears have heard the items on this second volume before now, apart from the two tiny encore pieces that conclude it. The performances that engaged me most were the Schumann Sonata, and the first take of "La Campanella". Levitzki's tender, lyrical playing of the sonata's second movement is in strong contrast to the bravura style exemplified in most of the other pieces here. There are some pearly runs and glossy scale passages in "La Campanella".

The Moszkowski piece is tossed off with appropriate ease. The pianist's own Waltz is something I used to play, not aware that most commentators now judge it to be camp and kitsch. To me it suggests Fritz Kreisler's miniatures or the pianist's own teacher, Ernst von Dohnanyi.

There is nearly 79 minutes' superb transfer value here.

The Levitzki Series Continues.......2003-11-29

Mischa Levitzki (1898-1941) was an American pianist trained mostly in Europe. He had, in fact, been born in Ukraine while his emigrant Russian-American parents were on a visit to the Old Country. He was extremely popular in the 1920s, but his vogue diminished in the 1930s and he died at only 42. He recorded little--only 53 78rpm sides--and Naxos is bringing them out in this series; this is Volume 2. The selections on this CD were recorded between 1927 and 1933. Collectors of historic piano recordings--as I am--will be wanting these issues because they are being issued in pristine sound by that master transfer engineer, Ward Marston.

On this disc is the seldom-heard Schumann Second Piano Sonata--you know, the one whose first movement has the marking 'So rasch wie möglich' ['As fast as possible'] followed later in the movement by 'Schneller' ['Faster']!)--which has always been one of my favorite pieces by Schumann. It is given an exciting reading here and the sound is simply amazing for 1933; listen to the richness of the bass notes, for instance.

Also included are the Liszt First Concerto (with Landon Ronald conducting the London Symphony), three Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies (No. 6, 12 & 13), as well as Liszt's 'Un sospiro' ['A Sigh'} and two performances of his 'La campanella' ['The Bell'], both a little slower than is usually heard but following the piece's tempo marking of Allegretto. They were recorded five years apart and there is little difference between them.

The CD concludes with Moszkowski's 'La Jongleuse' ('The Juggler Girl') and Levitzki's own Waltz in A Major, Op. 2, both bonbons he played frequently in his encore-studded recitals. The former is played with an endearing light touch, the latter with echt-Viennese charm.

Levitzki may not have been one of the giants, but he certainly was a talented player with impeccable technique, including an unfailingly beautiful tone, and a slightly cool style. Interestingly, Horowitz, whose style was somewhat similar, didn't like his playing.

Claudio Arrau in the early 1950s offered in his performances an ideal blend of deep thinking and glittering virtuosity, traits in abundance in these spectacular recordings. The spontaneity often missing from his later efforts suffuses all of these works, and he's aided by Eugene Ormandy's great orchestra. The Hungarian Rhapsodies are dazzling, full of excitement and even humor. The Fantasia sounds like a major work in Arrau's hands, full of poetic flair, and featuring unbelievably even trills, pregnant with meaning. The Concerto works on a similarly exalted level, with Arrau's bronze tone and impeccable technique scaling the heights of lyricism without stinting on drama and excitement. All in all, a must-have for Lisztians and keyboard devotees. ---Dan Davis

titanic playing from Arrau.......2007-01-10

As a pupil of Martin Krause, who was himself a pupil of Franz Liszt, Claudio Arrau had a special connection to the music of Liszt. It is no surprise then, that among Arrau's earliest recorded repertoire (1928-33) could be found various pieces of Liszt, including some of the etudes, Fountains at the Villa D'este, & the Spanish Rhapsody. In 1937 he recorded Harmonies du soir & Sonetto del Petrarca but did not record Liszt again until the fall of 1951 when he embarked on the recordings included on this Columbia disc. During this time he recorded very little (Arrau lived in Germany until 1941, then had to establish himself in America after his emigration); however, he had followed Martin Krause's advice not to become identified as a specialist in the music of any one composer. Indeed, his reputation as a universalist was established through a series of recitals undertaken in Berlin where he played all of the sonatas of Beethoven & Mozart, then the complete keyboard works of Bach among others. As it turns out, after recording the pieces collected on this disc (1951-2) it wasn't until relatively late in his career that Arrau once again recorded the music of Liszt, beginning in 1969 with the first of his seminal discs for Philips.

This Sony reissue opens with the E-flat major concerto, which was made when Arrau was forty-nine & which captures the pianist at his stunning best. According to Arrau's long-time manager, Friede Rothe, the concerto was recorded in one uninterrupted take after which Eugene Ormandy said "We're done. It can't be better than this." Arrau, ever the perfectionist in the studio, apparently agreed, for this is a performance that convinces in every detail - from the reflective elements of the first three movements which have a serenity and beauty that are hallmarks of this great pianist, to the kaleidoscopic whirlwind of the fourth movement where Arrau unleashes cascades of glittering notes.

The Hungarian Fantasy, which was the companion piece recorded for the original LP release & is included on this cd, receives a fine performance; however, it's too bad Arrau didn't record the A Major concerto instead, because his live performances demonstrate that he was truly a great interpreter of this concerto. His 1943 concert with Mitropoulos (Music & Arts) is representative, but the more expansive 1953 traversal with Guido Cantelli & the NY Philharmonic (Archipel) is unforgettable.

In 1951, Arrau began recording a complete cycle of the Hungarian Rhapsodies, however, after setting down the five rhapsodies included on this disc the project was dropped. While the rhapsodies are often played for effect, that is not the case here where the Hungarian folk elements are given a full airing out in a musically sympathetic, but understated way. His declamatory approach is very fitting, especially in the better-known ninth rhapsody (Pesht Carnival), combining extravagance with riveting technical proficiency. Interestingly, Arrau seems to find cubist patterns in this music, with some phrases being shaped into geometric blocks of sound. I find the interpretations fascinating, reflecting a 19th century way of playing (Arrau's incredible rolling chords are romantic flourishes that no one could get away with today) along with elements of modernism.

While the performances of all of the rhapsodies are outstanding, the thirteenth is in a category by itself: the first section is a wrenching emotional statement where Arrau practically makes the piano weep, whereas the finale is delivered in a controlled frenzy that is simply awesome.

In summary, this is Liszt playing in the grand manner with all of the scope and nuances that only Claudio Arrau, a direct inheritor of the Liszt tradition, could bring to the keyboard.

Eugene Ormandy era un director excepcional y en los años 50 recibio para hacer estas grabaciones a un joven Arrau, se juntaron y comenzaron la interpretación, la fluidez, la compenetración fue extraordinaria. El concierto Nº 1 es bello, es virtuosismo puro, es magia es genial.
Seguimos ahora con Fantasia Húngara (sobre temas húngaros) una exposición de animosidad, alegria, solemnidad, vigor y expresión sin igual, Arrau con fuerza incontenible nos lleva por la obra con energia inigualable, lo sigue haciendo despues en las rapsodias húngaras 8, 9 10, 11 y 13.
Por su parte como lo he comentado Ormandy lleva a la Orquesta de filadelfia a lo máximo.
Un Cd de collección con Arrau recien llegado a Filadelfia, Ormandy y su orquesta en continuo crecimiento.
Para hacer notar es una grabación mono aural.

A real let down from Biddulph Cortot Acoustic Victor.......2007-07-10

Biddulph transfers are usually pretty good but this disc containing the Complete Acoustic Victor Recordings is very poor. Actually this is the single worst transfer I've heard of this particular material. Not reccomended.
