Good parts version.......2005-08-22
This is the "good parts version" of this wonderful opera. Pavarotti & Sutherland are so splendid, so powerful, so suited to each other. The best songs on this cd bring me to tears (and my husband too!). The only thing that would be better is the entire opera. But this is half the price and 80% of the wonderfulness.
Excellent recording of Puccini masterpiece.......2002-12-10
Congrats all the way around for this excellent recording of "Turandot." Many cite this as the best on the market and I can see why. It boasts a stellar cast and conductor who really seems to understand the opera and Puccini's style.
The singers are in top form. Leading the charge is Joan Sutherland in the wholly uncharacteristic role of Turandot. I would not have thought of her in the role, and I imagine I am not alone on that one. But she acquits herself spendidly, lending a golden tone and pitch perfect sureness to this demanding role. The Act III duet with Pavarotti is particularly superb. Her acting is a touch underpowered but sufficient. However, the role is sung with great care and beauty.
Montserrat Caballe makes for luxury casting as Liu, considering that she would go on to record the title role. Rarely is a voice of her heft and richness cast in this very lyric soprano role. Her account of "Tanto amore segreto" is smashing. Her contribution to the Act I finale is also fantastic.
Pavarotti is also perfectly cast as Calaf, a role he would later sing on stage with Caballe as his Turandot (available in a live recording on the Gala label, well worth checking out). Pavarotti's voice just oozes heroism, and his spot-on technique (a little 'scooping' notwithstanding) is phenomenal. In a role that has attracted the most accomplished tenors of the century (Bjoerling, di Stefano, Domingo, Carreras, Corelli) Pavarotti more than holds his own. Outstanding.
Nicolai Ghiaurov's account of Timur is tonally lovely. His bass is pliant, with an affecting lightness in this role.
Conductor Zubin Mehta paces the opera beautifully. It is so refreshing to hear a conductor give the piece the "oomph" it needs in order to be the gripping tale that it is. After slogging through both Karajan and Maazel, I have to thank Mehta for understanding Puccini's style. Puccini is not Wagner and should not be treated as such. Puccini's operas tug at the heart because they take the hearer along with them for the ride. His style is not heady or academic and neither is Mehta's. Instead we get a rich and emotional account of this exquisite piece of music. Bravo!
The John Alldis Choir and London Philharmonic Orchestra also shine here, with some of the best work I have heard on an opera recording.
Excellent. A must have for Puccini enthusiasts. Of course, consider buying the entire set, which is reasonably priced. But if you just want the highlights, this is a perfect choice.
Opera Loving Bartender.......2002-05-09
Living in San Francisco for 30 years afforded me many great nights at the opera, and I was very fortunate to hear and see singers who today are mostly retired or deceased and now fall into the category of legendary, phenomonal, and unsurpassed to several new generations of young lovers of fine singing. It did not matter that Luciano Pavarotti, in full costume, resembeled a Mardi Gras float,or little Carlo Bergonzi went up on tiptoes for all those perfect high notes, the sound of their voices will forever ring in my ears. Two operas in particular were unforgetable.PAVAROTTI/CABALLE in TURANDOT,with Prince Charles in the audience for added luster, and CABALLE/HORNE in Semeramide. One would be hard pressed to ever hear finer singing. The Sutherland-Pavarotti disc is probably the best in modern sound[30yrs old]with the highlight being the Liu of Caballe, but in 1959,one year before his untimely death,Jussi Bjorling with the great Birgit Nilsson gave us an early stereo Swedish tour de force, recently remastered, that still stands at the top ,where it rightfully belongs.

Turandot of the Century.......2000-03-31
Dame Joan Sutherland has previously been referred to as the 'Voice of the Century' along with many other titles attesting the the magnificence of her singing and the sheer beauty of her voice. However at first thought, the prospect of her singing the role of Turandot, a role she did not sing on stage, might not ring true to most operaphiles. Her reputation as the finest, if not the only, dramatic coloratura would not seem to be compatible with this role. Fortunately one only has to hear a few bars to understand that this recording represents not only a beautifully sung Turandot but also has all the dramatic vocalization required (and not only by Miss Sutherland, but the entire cast as well). This is not a strident Turandot, but a heroic one with stunning tones that soar over the orchestra and chorus. The stellar cast also includes Caballe, among others, and frankly a more vocally desirable Liu could not be imagined. Any recording of opera that I have heard conducted by Zubin Mehta has always been a revelation; his genius in bringing otherwise hidden instrumentation foward into appropriate context, use of correct tempi and dynamics is invariably correct and results in stunning interpretation. This is a Turandot (get the complete version!) to be cherished for a century! We are not likely to hear the likes of another in this lifetime.

Customer Reviews:
Heart wrenching!.......2002-07-05
I purchased this recording to get another perspective on some of the famous arias from Turandot. I had already owned the famous highlights recording with Sutherland, Pavarotti and Caballe, and had become thoroughly enamored with the opera through that recording.
In particular, I look to the end of the first act, beginning with "Non piangere, Liu", and also "Nessun Dorma", as my primary highlights by which to make comparisons. This recording with Domingo compares very favorably to the Pavarotti disc. In fact, I prefer Domingo's Nessun Dorma over Pavarotti's. Domingo's voice has more color and more expressiveness. Pavarotti holds that last high B for a thrillingly long time, and that is his primary advantage, but Domingo pulls at my heart in a way that Pavarotti does not.
Regarding the end of the first act, the tempo on this disc is slower than on the Sutherland, Pavarotti, etc. disc. Here Karajan is responsible for providing the increased dramatic tension. When the famous three gongs sound indicating that Calaf will take on Turandont's challenge, I crumple. I will sometimes listen to this disc and compare it to the other Turandot highlight disc. I find both of them to be emotionally compelling and yet they are significantly different. I am glad to own both of them.
This highlights disc has the advantage of having all three riddles, while the other highlights disc only has the last riddle. Yet it doesn't have a libretto with translation. For that reason, I would want to own the other highlights disc (or a complete opera with full libretto) before buying this disc.

One for the Ages.......2004-09-08
I have to agree with Joseph Barker et al. This is a recording for the ages. I have been listening to it for nearly fifty years now (I think it's the first classical recording I ever bought), and I still thrill with delight (sounds corny but I can't think how else to put it) at the pure physical joy of this perfomance. Renata Tebaldi's Mimi and Carlo Bergonzi's Rudolfo still give me goosebumps, put a lump in my throat, bring tears to my eyes in exactly the way they did in 1959. It soars, man, it soars.
This is best Raboheme........2003-07-22
This is best album you must possess even if you are not big opera fan. I don't like operas other than La Boheme especially this album. You must purchase this. I cannot tell other parts other than this highlight version but to the extent of this album, i can guarrantee that you will not regret your purchase.
Do you know how beautiful the voice of Renata Tebaldi as Mimi is? It's the voice of angel.!!
The Most Beautiful Puccini Recording Ever Made.......2001-06-28
The 1950's gave us the only two possible choices for this much recorded opera. The first is the legendary recording of Sir Thomas Beecham with Jussi Bjoerling and Victoria De Los Angeles. The other is the complete version reviewed here, the most beautifully sung and recorded Puccini performance ever. Bergonzi, as usual, sings with a presence and intelligence that suggests much more than an echo chamber between the ears - unlike so many others. Tullio Serafin, then 78 years old, brings a warmth and beauty to the orchestral playing that is unmatched, and the bit parts contain great singers like Corena and Bastianini. Top all of this off with Renata Tebaldi as Mimi, here making the most beautiful sound ever to come from a human throat. This is a recording that still sounds fresh after more than 40 years, and remains the primary choice over many fine rivals.
Essential Recording!.......2001-02-23
Although the complete set is a must and just highlights are not enough to enjoy this jewel, whoever buys this Boheme will experience the unsurpassed performances of Renata Tebaldi and Carlo Bergonzi. Really, who else would you want to hear singing "Mi chiamano Mimi"? She is simply the Mimi to which all others are measured. Mr. Bergonzi, his only studio recording of this role, will bring tears to the most demanding listener. If he was the first to sing "Celeste Aida romantically, imagine what he can do with the role of Rodolfo! But beyond them the supporting cast includes legends such as Ettore Bastianini, Cesare Siepi and the less popular Giana D' Angelo. The conducting is also supreme, handled by a true expert, T. Serafin. After so many years and so many recordings, this Boheme remains my first choice. Get it, and you will see why!

Customer Reviews:
Not without its charms, but why not upgrade to Sutherland?.......2007-07-11
Montserrat Caballé is a soprano whose beautiful voice is more suitable for the gentle role of Liù than the ferocious title princess; this is evident with her magnificent performance in the 1973 recording with Mehta and the London Philharmonic. During "In questa reggia" and "Straniero, ascolta!" she shrieks and squeals, but still fails to depict the iciness that Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, and Eva Marton captured so well. José Carreras proves here, yet again, that he is in no way Pavarotti's, Domingo's, or Corelli's equal; he is wobbly throughout, especially during his bewitched, breathtaking aria "Nessun dorma." Mirella Freni's silky voice is a welcomed relief as Liù, and her rendition of "Signore, ascolta!" is a definite highlight of her career. A young Paul Plishka is pitiful as the Tartar King Timur, and Michel Sénéchal is regal and imperious as Altoum, despite the comic daintiness of his voice.
Despite Caballe's disappointing work, the true villain in this recording is Alain Lombard, unto whom all soloists fall victim. The conducing is blunt, vapid, and lacks most of the exotic and rhythmic connotations prevalent in Puccini's works. This opera, in which Mehta and Karajan produced such stirring, thrilling noises, here sounds clinical and devoid of romance and spectacle.
Glorious voices, limited orchestra.......2002-12-31
I've previously reviewed two other Turandot Highlights CDs. One with Pavarotti/Sutherland/Caballe and the other with Domingo/Ricciarelli/Hendricks.
I was surprised to be as impressed with the voices on this CD as I was. I previously regarded Carreras as a lesser tenor than Domingo or Pavarotti, but he is in great form on this disc. His singing is inspiring and totally compelling. Also Caballe as Turandot is the equal of anyone. Many believe that only Sutherland could fill that role, but Caballe is truly admirable here. Mirella Freni is a full-throated Liu -- maybe a little to bold for the character in my opinion. I was more impressed with Caballe as Liu on the Pavarotti/Sutherland/Caballe disc.
The selection of highlights is remarkably different from the other Highlights discs. The disc that seems to make the most sense in terms of highlights is the Pavarotti/Sutherland/Caballe disc, however that one leaves out the first two riddles. Both this disc and the Domingo, et. al. disc have all three riddles. They also all contain "Non Piangere, Liu", "Ah, per l'ultima volta" and, of course, "Nessun Dorma". This disc allows arias to fade out instead of trying to end them in a neatly tied-up cadence.
The grave disappointment with this disc is the quality of the orchestra. The orchestral climax at the end of the first act is a total flop. I thought I was listening to first-class voices accompanied by a high school band.
Still, the singing is so compelling that this disc deserves consideration, and the budget price makes it easy to try. It does not come with much in the way of liner notes, so it is helpful to already have another disc with the libretto, if you want to be able to follow the arias.

Customer Reviews:
For heaven's sake, don't confuse this with opera!.......2005-11-21
Sheesh, the marketing mavens are at it AGAIN!
With all due respect to the admirable enthusiasm of the previous reviewer, EMI has effectively shortchanged him with this collection of highlights. Let's be absolutely clear about this: an opera is more than an assemblage of bleeding hunks. An opera is (or should be) a large-scale work with both a dramatic and a musical arc. Both of these arcs are undercut and mangled in the process of selecting highlights, thus providing a falsified picture of what the composer, librettist(s), conductor and cast intended.
Buy, buy, buy, absolutely amazing!.......2005-03-01
I had allready seen this box a few times before I bought it and I had always planned to buy it, never having looked at the price, so when I came to the shop yesterday I saw it again and I checked the price aswell: 15 euros only (about fifteen dollars aswell)!!!
So I bought it and I don't regret it! As a beginning Puccini-fan I don't have so many of his operas on CD at home, like this I have pieces of five of his great operas for 15 euros (one hour per opera!!!!)
Now one might think: so much for so little money, it must be bad, unknown singers. They're not!
La Boheme is with beatifull Mirella Freni, Nicolai Gedda and Mario Sereni, and ooooh how well a Mimì is Freni. How sweet, how shy and also how funny!
Madama Butterfly is with Victoria de los Angeles, Jussi Bjorling and Mario Sereni again. And allthough De los Angeles is not such a young Cio-cio-san in the first act (she's still AMAZING!!!) she makes up (and how??!!) in the second act. She is very good! That's the only word. And ofcourse the great Jussi Bjorling with his understanding of the music, the text and his smooth toning is absolutely amazing. In Madama Butterfly there's an aria from Cio-cio-san in the second act called: Che tua madre dovra. Ofcourse I had heard it before, but the way De los Angeles portrays the character here, is from unknown beauty!
Turandot is good. Montserrat Caballé is very good at portraying this character and sings it nice, not as good as Sutherland, but still good. José Carreras is very beautifull in this recording, allthough I'm not a particular fan of his, having Mirella Freni as Líu is pure luxery, but ooh so touching!
Manon Lescaut I had never heard before. So this was a big treat for me. With Montserrat Caballé in the title-role (she's one of my favorite sopranos) and Placido Domingo as De Grieux (I'm not really into Domingo, but he's good in this role). The pure and innocent pianissimos of Caballé are so beatiful that it almost seems inhuman.
There were two parts that I liked particularly: first the famous intermezzo and second the song of the small mezzo part in this opera. Absolutely a great opera from wich I would like to hear more.
The last opera this box containes is Tosca. It's not my first Tosca, but it is my second. The first I heard was with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Ruggero Raimondi. It was good for a while, but I didn't really like the singers (except for Raimondi) so I quit listening to it. Then I heard this and discovered how beautiful Tosca can be.
Renata Scotto sing a Tosca only definable as magnificent. Because that's what it is, with her huge Puccini-voice she tackles the part as if it's nothing. Her acting is great and with a lot of stile.
Domingo as Cavaradossi is nice, but he's not the right tenor for this part. Renato Bruson is great as Scarpia.
From Tosca the parts I like the most are the dialoges between Tosca and Scarpia in the second act and the very end of the opera, when Tosca waits for the executioners to shoot, then discovers Mario is dead and then jumps. The music with that is so gripping!
This box is worth it's five stars, because of the dazzling singers in every opera and the price of the box!!! Buy, you won't regret it.
