5 out of 5 stars Still getting better.......2007-07-01

Andre has put out another high-quality CD that should only boost his stock. This CD is a wonderful listen with a lot of mellow tunes, and if you see him live, this CD will at least match your expectations from his shows.

The mellow tunes are headlined by "Andre's Theme", "New Orleans Lights" and "More Than Friends", the last of which has quickly become a favorite of mine. "When You're Alone" is also right up there, and "I Don't Want to Be In Love" also has a nice feel to it.

He picks up the pace nicely with a couple of songs, notably "Chicago (Here We Go)" and the final track, "When the Nighttime Comes".

All in all, this CD is a very worthy addition to your collection, just like his prior CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better!.......2007-06-07

Andre continues to impress. His music transcends generations and genres. With each album, the artist has expanded his repertoire and his ability to entertain. A true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-31

Andre Ward has put together a beautiful, melodic album worthy of being a part of any smooth jazz lover's collection. This one is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It!.......2007-05-24

Andre Ward has taken his smooth saxophone sounds to the next level. I imagine as an artist you're always trying to improve your craft in a way that is meaningful. I would have to say not only has this been done but the standard has just been raised. There's something here for every listening taste without compromising. Not one day has gone by that I have not listened to this cd over and over again. My hope is that people reading THIS review will give this project a chance. You will not be disappointed in any way, shape or form. There's a song for people who enjoy stepping...Chicago Here We Go. There are wonderful vocals as well. Marc Nelson formerly of AZ Yet sings beautifully on I Don't Want to Be In Love. I absolutely love the vocalists on Wishful Thinking and More Than Friends. Instrumentally...Abstract is bananas. It's not like anything I've ever heard and I absolutely love it. New Orleans Lights gives me a chance to remember a time when that city was at its bold, bright and most beautiful best. The title cut Crystal City is absolutely beautiful and I fell in love with Andre's Theme long before the cd had officially been released. If you're looking for something fresh and innovative. A cd that you'll never grow tired of listening to, Crystal City is the one for you.
Andre...you did your thing!

5 out of 5 stars Movin' on up!.......2007-05-22

Andre ward's cd crystal city is a very well put together cd. Like the master grover washington, marion meadows and my favorite the late great george howard... andre has carved out his own voice among saxophonists. With this cd he plays the ewi on chicago{here we go}.Which is a steppers jam bringing to mind everette harp on that tune. Very nicely produced by yasha and orpheus records

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.

The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-03-18

This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

5 out of 5 stars The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11

The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.

There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??

The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.

It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)

To make a long story short - a very enjoyable cd!

5 out of 5 stars Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14

A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21

I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2003-07-16

Definitely worth purchasing. It is not an opera CD - it is a concert CD with 3 superb tenor voices that blend together so nicely. A wonderfully entertaining music CD with lots of variety and an opportunity for opera to grow on non-opera lovers. What else can you expect from the BEST. A DVD version would be wonderful.

Among the early '60s wave of American jazzmen entranced by Brazilian music, none proved more ebullient than pianist Vince Guaraldi, whose homage to a 1959 film retelling the Orpheus myth as an underclass Rio de Janeiro romance proved a sleeper hit. With Guaraldi's fleet, always rhythmic piano driving these concise trio settings, Black Orpheus remains a seductive delight, probing the then-exotic push and pull of samba with glee, but leaving ample room for more contemplative ballads that remain deeply affecting more than three decades after the album's release. Luis Bonfa's and Antonio Carlos Jobim's music was the seed for the project, yielding a percolating "Samba de Orpheus" and the haunting ballad, "Manha de Carnaval," but the album's best-known performance remains Guaraldi's own wistful and swinging "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." A surprise single hit in 1965, the song would later receive a more expansive pop cover, but it's Guaraldi's original that remains the superior performance--a wordless romantic reverie that speaks volumes in Guaraldi's tender verses, muscular choruses, and romping bridge. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Hold the Peanuts.......2007-04-18

Vince Guaraldi cranks out music like few others. What makes him special? Aside from his trademark "crushed tone thirds," he delivers at multiple levels. I can be swept away by the joy, bouncing with the beat, or running to my piano room to practice when I hear this CD. There are no lulls. Guaraldi's playing, masterful as it is, is all about the listener's experience, not about the player's chops. If you've enjoyed hearing him you-know-where, but want to experience him without thinking of you-know-what, he brings the same kind of positive energy to this CD as he did to the characters of you-know-who.

5 out of 5 stars Vince Guaraldi....A giant among jazz pianists.......2006-03-22

This item is absolutely wonderful. Wonderful interpretation of the Black Orpheus theme. I miss Vince Guaraldi since his early death. What a loss. But we have him on these old wonderful albums so we are blessed to be able to hear his fantastic talent. Try his Charlie Brown album & at Grace Cathedral. Two classics that I would also recommend.

5 out of 5 stars More Goodness.......2006-02-24

Our family enjoys the Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack by Vince Guaraldi. This CD has several tracks that equal that performance

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fate.......2006-02-17

A wonderful cd. Cast Your Fate to the Wind is worth the price of admission alone. A joy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Album.......2005-12-25

"Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" was the breakthrough album for Vince Guaraldi. It's a classic jazz trio playing in the then-popular bossa nova style. Mr. Guaraldi is a master of the piano, playing in a laid back, flowing style that is a joy to hear. People are most familiar with the mega-hit "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" but the other cuts are just as good and will haunt you for days after hearing them. All-in-all, a classic jazz album that belongs in every afficianado's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great first time clasical experience.......2006-07-02

Wanted to try the "Mozart Effect" on my teenage niece who only listened to rap and teen-pop. She said the first time she heard this it was like electrical sparks lighting up her brain. She loved it.

I am already familiar with classical music. This compilation is very well chosen, edited and engineered. There are some less than common selections, so even if you already have many symphonies, there will be some different music on this CD. Nothing is too long. The tempo is both mildly relaxing and stimulating at the same time. Good for studying or thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice!.......2001-10-28

I bought this CD to play in my Kindergarten classroom. It is great for transition time - I turn it on to signal the children that it is time to clean up and meet me on the rug. They clean up, sit on the rug and close their eyes for a minute. This really works to calm them down and they seem to like the music. This CD is a must have!!!

5 out of 5 stars Serendipitous Treasure.......2000-11-01

I bought this CD just to have some classical music to listen to while driving across the deserts of the western US (classical radio stations are, alas, not too plentiful in rurual areas). It was on sale and looked like it would be reasonably good (how could one go too wrong with Mozart anyhow?). It also featured several selections I did not have on other CD's, so it would be a good addition to the Mozart section, I figured.

I had no idea a 'budget' CD could be this good. Whether or not this actually tunes your brain as the producers claim, the music is just stellar. Mozart was one of history's great composers, but the selection of works here is just astonishing in scope, composition, and variety. The performances and recording quality match the quality of the music too. This CD works as a "Mozart conoisseur's" collection.

While these are not Mozart's best known or most popular selections (The Marriage of Figaro, Ein Klein Nachtmuzik, etc. have to be located elsewhere), every song on this CD is a masterpiece -- living up to the descriptive line from "Amadeus" ('..Displace one note and you would only mar perfection...').

Even if you already have a sizaeable classical collection, this CD is a very worthwhile addition. At a bargain price, it's a real deal--almost a steal.

This impressionistic score from Marcel Camus's 1958 cinematic retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus was most Americans' introduction to the Brazilian musical style called bossa nova. As it became a nationwide craze that featured both Brazilian samba and U.S. cool-jazz participants, the names of Black Orpheus composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa became familiar far beyond the hi-fi set. Along with the haunting theme song, "Manha de Carnaval," and several Jobim compositions are the vibrant street sounds of the pre-Lenten festival Carnaval, which provides the backdrop to the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The score is awash with percussive samba rhythms and the laughter and chanting of the annual festival melee. This is a great disc to play when the day needs a parade. --Lois Maffeo

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best and original........2007-01-29

I like Manha De Carnaval so much that I listened to Domingo, Nana Mouskouri, Carly Simon and Luis Miguel's versions borrowed from the libraries. I like the original song in track 6 by Luiz Bonfa. Track 8 guitar playing is also beautiful. Track 11 female vocal is wonderful, spontaneous and second to none. The sound quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-03-26

It's wonderful to have a new recording of the sound track from the movie Black Orpheus. The movie was one of my favorites but I played my old record of the sound track so many times (and put it through so many moves) it was scratched and no longer enjoyable to listen to. Now everytime I listen to my CD version I am transported to the time and space of the movie and the time and space of the early sixties when I first heard it. The little bonus addition at the end of the CD is fun too.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the movie, not this soundtrack.......2006-03-09

Save your money. I love the movie very much, and to watch it and to listen it is an experience like none other. However, if you look for the music from this movie, do not look here. This is just the movie, except without video. I have great respect for Bonfa and Jobim's work on this music, but they do not get glorified truly since the tracks change so quickly and the movie sounds play such a large role in the soundtrack cd. Listen to Trio da Paz and their Black Orpheus album and see how it compares, and even though it is not the original Jobim or Bonfa, it pays more homage to them than this original soundtrack. Verve took the wrong route with this one. Yes the music is landmark in evolving Samba/Bossa Nova, but this cd does not depict truly how wonderful the music is.

3 out of 5 stars Nace el bosanova.......2006-02-21

5 out of 5 stars Coffee ? Eggs ? Bacon ? Bach ?.......2005-10-04

This recording is a delightful morning brew of Bach's most beautiful and atmospheric instrumental music, even making use of an instrument that most music scholars forget he even wrote music for - the harp, as in the SLonatas for Flute, Harp and Cello, which on this recording, sound positively radiant coming from the likes of Sir Neville Marriner's Academy of St Martin In The Fields or the English Chamber Orchestra. The opening track is the ever popular Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, mostly a featured piece in Wedding Ceremonies. The Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D, which I believe is marked "Overture" is regal and elegant. The English Suite No. 3 in G Minor is a lovely piece, as is the intimately slow andane of the Brandenbur Concerto No. 2. The Concerto for Violin and Panpies in D is a fresh new rendition. All in all, this is a very intimate CD, full of Baroque charm and romance. It is a fine way to start your day.

3 out of 5 stars Gentle background music with lots of harp.......2005-06-26

In general, the Philips series "Set Your Life to Music" is one of the better, high-quality compilation series of classical music. This CD is a collection of Bach's Baroque-era music that is ideal for those unfamiliar to the often-intimidating world of classical music who mainly are looking for some pleasant and inspiring background music while learning a little about classical music. This Bach collection contains music that is rich in the soothing sounds of flute, harp, guitar and oboe along with a sampling of Bach's mild-mannered, songful orchestral music. Overall, the selections are all gentle and lyrical with a good sound quality. The concerto, oboe and orchestral works are some of Bach's finest compositions of sheer beauty and elegance and are performed by some of classical music's finest musicians. Some selections most everyone who has been ever been to a few weddings will recognize (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire). And no piece is as haughtingly lovely as the flute sonata slow movement (Siciliano) on track 5 - a highlight of the disc.

While 'classical purists' may raise their brow because of the many flute/harp selections (citing that Bach never composed any music for the harp), the person buying this CD for inspiring and relaxing mood music should be be delighted just fine with these "transcriptions" from piano to harp. The harp has a special niche for creating the most serene of atmospheres which it does not fail to do here. The solo Suite in E-flat was originally composed for solo violin but sounds much more smooth and dreamy on the harp - a piece very well done. However, some pieces are so serene that you might fall asleep at the breakfast table - hence, the sub-title "A leisurely way to start your day." Actually, it could easily be titled, "Bach for Bedtime" as the selections are all pretty relaxed and on the quiet side. So, if the hyper-energy of Mozart symphonies is too much for your mornings or if the sharp surges of Beethoven's music unsettle you, then these calmer Bach selections should be a better way to ease into the day.

If you like the flavor of Baroque music, "Bach for Book Lovers" in the same series is a good choice and has more solo piano selections for the piano lover. "Bach for Bedtime" is also a wonderful (non-duplicating) collection of some of Bach's most serene music and is also recommended. Perhaps the most calming and sedating music in this Philip's series is "Baroque for Bathtime" which can easily put you to sleep - in a good way - with or without the bath. All are high quality with well-selected pieces from the treasures of classical music's most influential composer of the Baroque era - Johann Sebastian Bach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Brilliant Music for Home Listening.......2004-01-26

You will love this CD! Like many of the CD's from this series, the music was carefully chosen for home listening. I just love playing this CD at home.

The "songs" on this CD and from the series were chosen from the vast and excellent Phillips classical music catalog. The sound, performances, and song selections are world-class.

A lot of great classical music is great for an evening at the concert hall but not very good for listening at home. The crescendos can be loud and the themes too intense. I would rather listen to a breathtaking Mozart piano sonata (solo piano) at home than a grand Mozart symphony (large orchestra) at home. The music on this CD was chosen for home listening, such as when reading a book.

This music appeals to everyone. Classic musicians may snub this music because it's not grand like a full-blown opera. They ignore the fact that the great composers, like Bach recognized different musical genres such as chamber music for at home or the kings court, and grand symphonies for an evening at the concert hall.

The music on this CD is EXCELLENT for listening at home. It's both brilliant and mellow. When I listen to this music I marvel at the brilliance of Bach. I am very grateful for this music and other CD's in this series.

A fantastic CD!

5 out of 5 stars Bach for any meal!.......2004-01-22

By far, one of the best "collection" CDs of Bach's music. On a couple of tracks, some liberties are taken, but overall, this is a must-have. It includes 6 tracks from the Flute Sonatas, and features a soloist with whom I was not familiar - Irena Grafenauer gives THE MOST EXQUISITE performances I have ever heard - Galway and Rampal, step aside!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely!!!.......2002-04-06

Worth every penny! A must have in the car if you commute on busy highway daily to and from work -- help to ease road rage! It's great for relaxing after a long day of programming too!

Product Description

Studies prove that the music of Mozart has a powerful effect on the intellectual and creative development of children. Don Campbell, musician, teacher and author of the new book The Mozart Effect for Children and The Mozart Effect, has selected some of the best of Mozart's music to stimulate and inspire young minds. Based on up-to-date medical and psychological research in creativity and intelligence, the pieces on each recording have been carefully chosen by the author so that tempos, key signatures and textures of the music change with each selection in order to provide a rich listening and learning experience for children of all ages.

Two hundred years after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death, French physician Dr. Tomatis discovered a relationship between listening and learning. Remarkably, he found that children develop their listening ability in the womb. According to medical studies, we now know that the music of Mozart in particular has a profound effect on the human mind, body, and spirit. Working in accordance with this philosophy, internationally known teacher and musician Don Campbell wrote The Mozart Effect, a seminal book correlating music with health, well-being, and increased intelligence. Campbell's musical collection of the same name presents compositions carefully chosen for the benefit of children. Volume 1, "Tune Up Your Mind," is formulated to gently stimulate young minds. Volume 2, "Relax, Daydream, and Draw," includes excerpts from Symphony Nos. 6 and 18, and volume 3, "Mozart in Motion," a delightfully playful disc, includes an excerpt from The Magic Flute. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Great CD's for children........2007-05-23

These CD's are very uplifting and will leave you in a great mood. These are wonderful for children to listen to on a daily basis.

3 out of 5 stars Eh..........2007-01-10

It's okay. For the classroom, there is one CD that's good background music for working at desks and one that's good for dancing. But I'd rather listen to "real" classical music with kids.

5 out of 5 stars We Love These!!!.......2006-02-11

Our whole famiy loves these CDs! They are very relaxing to listen to while playing games, drawing, or building! I'm no music expert, but I thought the sound quality was good. We listen to them almost everyday! In fact, our kids request 'Mozart music' when playing and it does seem to help keep them focused on one thing for quite some time. :)

5 out of 5 stars Bringforth the artist within by listening to Mozart.......2005-10-07

Some scholars claimed that the Author of "The Mozart Effect", Don Campbell, overemphasized his theory. I bought his 2 books, and this set of CD to find out whether his findings are legitimate.
The more I listen to Mozart, according to his arrangement, the more I'm convinced. The Mozart Effect: Music for Children, Volume 1-3 is an excellent prescription for the young and older mind, alike.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute nonsense.......2005-03-06

I have not heard this CD but the idea that listening to Classical music in the womb has been disproven by legitimate scientists for a long time. A simple search found the following...

"The Mozart Effect is an example of how science and the media mix in our world. A suggestion in a few paragraphs in a scientific journal becomes a universal truth in a matter of months, eventually believed even by the scientists who initially recognized how their work had been distorted and exaggerated by the media. Others, smelling the money, jump on the bandwagon and play to the crowd, adding their own myths, questionable claims, and distortions to the mix."

"The idea for the Mozart Effect originated in 1993 at the University of California, Irvine, with physicist Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher, a former concert cellist and an expert on cognitive development. They studied the effects on a few dozen college students of listening to the first 10 minutes of the Mozart Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K.448). They found a temporary enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning, as measured by the Stanford-Binet IQ test. No one else has been able to duplicate their results. One researcher commented that the "very best thing that could be said of their [Shaw's and Rauscher's] experiment-were it completely uncontested-would be that listening to bad Mozart enhances short-term IQ" (Linton). Rauscher has moved on to study the effects of Mozart on rats. Both Shaw and Rauscher have speculated that exposure to Mozart enhances spatial-reasoning and memory in humans. "

Note that the only scientific tests were performed on college students.

If you want to listen to Mozart, great. Just buy a CD that does not insult your intelligence by making ridiculous claims.

Album Description

Nick Cave changed the sound of music as part of the seminal goth-punks The Birthday Party. With his band of 20 years, The Bad Seeds, his solo work has veered between poignant gospel-inflected ballads and the steamy thud of backwater blues and country. This double album showcases both these sides of Cave's songwriting, with The Bad Seeds rising to fine, even funky, form. "Abattoir" is more rock 'n' roll with gospel overtones and salacious grooves, while "Lyre" is rawer and more experimental with a lot of acoustic instrumentation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Nick Cave Must-Have!.......2007-01-31

I didn't get this album until relatively recently. Frankly, I was a little afraid of what this album would mean. Nocturama was solid but certainly not earth-shattering.

Thankfully, Nick and the Seeds have come up with this little 2-disc, that not just relieved my apprehension, but delivered beyond! For those of you still a little in love with Boatman's Call, this is a great new side of the band, brooding in a whole new way and rockin' while they're at it! Here's a great example of a band that keeps on growing and learning and just keeps on getting better with time. Every track on these 2 discs just grabs you in a unique way.

Abattoir mixes elements of gospel, southern rock, blues with a Tom Waits-ish twist. Lyre transitions with a track that blends a sound between the 2 discs and then weaves into a folk-like manner of song for the rest of the album. The track, Breathless offers an original use of flute that adds an innocence not often heard in their songs.

Hearing this album is like a wayward soul that has has found redemption. And how sweet it is!

5 out of 5 stars Breathless.......2006-10-15

You should buy this album just for the track Breathless. I can't get this song out of my head and everytime I hear it it makes me a little bit happier.

4 out of 5 stars can't stop!.......2006-07-27

Just got through the "first playing". I must have play "Nature Boy" 10 times in a row... "Hiding All Away"... just grabs me, great contrast between Cave and the b'kgrnd singers (reminds me of Jim Morrison, but with a lot more to say)!

I give it 4 stars for this first pass.. might go up to 5, but sure won't go below.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a masterpiece.......2006-04-09

The hard rock blast of Get Ready For Love with its tempo variation opens the album. Cannibal's Hymn is a slow but intense rock ballad and is followed by the somewhat messy but equally intense Hiding All Away. The music but not the lyrics, lightens up with the subdued love song Messiah Ward. There She Goes My Beautiful World with its disturbing imagery and edgy rhythmic patterns is a tour de force.

One of the highlights is Nature Boy, a driving rock song with a beautiful melody and poetic lyrics. The mid-tempo track Let The Bells Ring is another track with a nervous beat and a lovely chorus. This CD concludes with Fable Of The Brown Ape, a slow number with a complex arrangement. Abattoir Blues contains mostly harder rock songs that sound messy at first listen but make sense after repeated spins. Perhaps it could be considered as Nick Cave's very own Exile On Main Street.

The Orpheus CD is more melodious with a gentler overall sound and more immediately memorable compositions. The title track is a long story song in a bluesy vein. It is followed by the tuneful Breathless, an exquisitely beautiful love song which is one of my favourites. The atmospheric Babe You Turn Me On is another tender ballad with a gorgeous melody. After the meandering interlude of Easy Money comes the uptempo rock of Supernaturally that becomes quite rousing in the chorus.

The subdued Spell has a dreamy quality as has the next one, Carry Me, with its moving spiritual undertone. The Orpheus CD concludes with O Children, a ruminative song with a gospel feel. This double album is an impressive showcase of Cave's multifaceted talents. Rock fans will prefer Abattoir Blues but I find the contemplative Orpheus more appealing. Four and a half stars would be the proper rating.

5 out of 5 stars Nick Caves in!.......2006-01-23

Nick Cave mainly derives his inspiration from two things. 1)Early BeeGees singles from the '60s and, 2) Picking his nose. This is evident on this collection which is the ideal soundtrack to roll boogers to. Don't miss out!

5 out of 5 stars Robert Craft & Stravinsky: 3 Ballets on Themes of Greek Mythology.......2006-12-20

Naxos is doing us all a most welcome favor by re-releasing the Robert Craft performances of Stravinsky (and some Webern, and some Schoenberg) that earlier passed through on labels like MusicMaster and Koch Classics.

On this disc we get three of the later ballets that the composer did, based on Greek themes in mythology.

The earliest of these works is the ballet, Apollo. Or Apollon musagete. (1928) Craft seems to have had a complex relationship to the master, part family, part soul-mated colleague, and maybe part worshipper of the muses. He leads a deft and balanced reading of Apollo with the LSO. Do not let yourself be misled by the mainly diatonic, or major-key based, nature of this neo-classically fresh music. It is euphonius, and transcends its analytical means.

After visiting for a day with the composer, the Russian impresario Diaghilev wrote to a friend, "...it is, of course, an amazing work, extraordinarily calm and with greater clarity than anything he has done: filigree counterpoint around transparent, clear-cut themes, all in a major key, music not of this world, but from somewhere above ..."

Diaghilev got it, then, and so do Robert Craft and the players.

Second comes the latest of these 3 ballets, Agon. (1957) By this time the master was going serial, or twelve-tone, in his very own special way. He finished Agon close to his 75th birthday, and there is little or nothing quite like it in most of the published twelve-tone literature. Somehow, Stravinsky finds the intense economies that we associate with Webern while staying true to himself. There is no published scenario to Agon, as if the music were its own reason for being a ballet. The Orchestra of St. Luke's is smaller than the LSO, but no less musically gifted. Yet again, Robert Craft's leadership is astute, and he seems to have an ear no less incisive than Pierre Boulez when it comes to pitch, texture, and rhythm. What he offers that Pierre Boulez sometimes does not, at least as recorded, is a certain warmth and involvement, a certain sensory richness and physicality.

The last ballet on this disc is the one written in between Apollo and Agon: Orpheus (1946). The choice of subject originated with Georges Balanchine who was much taken with the Orpheus myth, but ballet stage designer Isamu Noguchi also deserves credit for bringing the work to life as dance, as scene, and as total art work. Stravinsky's genius was supported and nourished by the other two, and so we get a sort of return of the younger composer, all that much wiser for being able to embrace sensuality again after having survived two world wars and ending up settled amid the posturing glitz of Hollywood and southern California. Craft leads the LSO in another fine reading.

Apollo and Orpheus were caught in Abbey Road, U.K., and Agon in an auditorium at SUNY, Purchase. The sound matches the clarity, brilliance, and sensual heft of these three performances. Never flashy. No kitsch. But generous and scintillating, nonetheless.

Check out the whole Robert Craft series of recorded Stravinsky. This disc is just one among a string of finely matched pearls, waiting for the black velvet of your listening room's expectant quiet.

5 out of 5 stars A Return to the Greeks a la Stravinsky.......2006-06-24

This marvelous CD presents three Stravinsky ballets that deal with Greek mythology and span Stravinsky's output from 1927 through 1957 allowing us to hear the manner in which Stravinsky continued to grow with the musical changes of the times (if not invent them!). The conductor is Robert Craft, Stravinsky's longtime colleague and promoter and in these recordings, each made originally on separate sessions, he conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Lukes, both ensembles having an affinity for these works.

'Apollon musagete, ballet in 2 scenes for string orchestra' (1927) is probably the finest of his neoclassical period works for orchestra alone. It can be steely cool in other's hands, but here Craft draws an achingly beautiful sound from the London Symphony. It is meditative, serenely poignant and ethereal.
'Agon, ballet for twelve dancers & orchestra' (1957) is one of Stravinsky's twelve tone works that manages to go beyond the usual constrictions of that form to become an unusually melodic work. Craft and the Orchestra of St. Lukes offer a performance that gives all of the sixteen variations individual importance.

'Orpheus, ballet in 3 scenes for orchestra' (1947) concludes the recital with the admixture of both Stravinsky's neoclassicism with his early penchant for seething romantic melody lines. This is the work of the three that will find widest audience appeal for those not yet captivated with the Stravinsky 'cerebral works' and it makes a fine way to complete this exploration into Greek themes so cleverly programmed by the reconstructors of this first class CD. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, June 06

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Caftsmanship.......2005-07-17

Robert Craft was one of Stravinkij's best friends and worked closely with him in several circumstaces over the course of the years until the composer died. Craft was almost like a borther for Stravinsky (he lived with the russian composer's family both in California and later in New York City, and shared with him many ideas and projects which eventually culminated in a artistic relationship. Crafts wrote the libretto for The Flood and became the major biogarpher and Stravinskij's scholar publishing several numbers of books and essays on Starvinsky's ouvres and asethetic.

In this recording Craft is actually the best interpreterof Starvinsky's ballet music. Before I listened to this extraordinary Naxos CD, I thought tha Ansermet went farther than anybody else did --even more than Stravinskij himself. Craft made me change my mind: when you listen to his intepretation of this music, you have the feeling that he is talking to his longstanding friend Igor while conducting his music.

This recording will mark a milestone in revealing the beauty of Stravibnskij's music. Buy it, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Very good rendition.......2005-07-01

I am so glad to find all three of these ballets on one CD.

The performance is beautiful. I could find nothing wrong with the interpretation, and I can assure you I am quite picky.

Anyway, I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Performances of Three Fine Stravinsky Ballets.......2005-06-10

Whoever had the idea of putting these performances of three of Stravinsky's ballets based on classical Greek themes on the same CD should get a medal. They are plucked and combined from several Koch Classics releases of a few years ago. Naxos seems to be reissuing all of Robert Craft's Stravinsky performances from the Koch label, and that's good. Craft, who has an unwarranted reputation as a dry-as-dust conductor, actually puts quite a bit of juice in these lovely scores. Similar as they may be in thrust, these three scores are really quite different from each other. 'Apollo' (1927-28) is for strings alone and is quintessential neoclassicism. 'Orpheus' (1947), for full orchestra, mixes neoclassicism with old-fashioned lyrical romanticism; indeed it is Stravinsky's first work since 'Firebird' to use the marking 'espressivo.' 'Apollo' and 'Orpheus' are narrative ballets but 'Agon' (1957) is plotless. It is very nearly atonal and varies the orchestration for nearly all the sixteen variations; the full orchestra is never used for any of them. Yet, within a few notes anyone familiar with Stravinsky's sound will immediately identify the composer of any of these works. It's always seemed amazing to me that a twelve-tone work by Stravinsky still sounds like him.

In 'Apollo' (or 'Apollon musagète' as it is called in French) all violence and abrasiveness (as one might expect from the composer of 'The Rite of Spring') are eschewed. Rather the work coolly and lyrically limns the birth and life of Apollo in music that is like some 18th-century court ballet filtered through 19th-century French ballet composers like Adam and Delibes. Delicious. And deliciously performed here by the London Symphony under Craft.

'Orpheus' was commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for George Balanchine who had suggested the subject. It was originally intended to be coupled with 'Apollo' in performance but in fact that did not happen at its première. Although narrative, it is intensely hieratic and uses neobaroque gestures including canon, other kinds of counterpoint, restless bass lines, ostinati and the like. It is more austere than 'Apollo' but lyrical nonetheless. It, too, is given a lovely, flexible, suave performance by the LSO.

'Agon' (Greek for 'contest') is essentially a dance contest before the gods. Not really quite atonal, but making use of a 12-tone row, it combines Renaissance dances (including a galliard in C major with a canon featuring harp and mandolin), coupled with what Stephen Walsh in Grove's calls 'high-speed stream-of-consciousness chromaticism.' Its première was conducted by Robert Craft, and here, conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke's, he leads a fast-moving performance that occasionally gets a little out of breath, but is energetic and energizing for all that.

There have been other recordings of these works, including those conducted by Stravinsky himself, but these are satisfying and in modern sound.

Recommended.
