Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
One of the most remarkable music performances I have seen.

You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!

Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23

This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.

First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.

I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.

As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!

At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.

All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

This CD is terrific on so many levels. In celebration of one of the world's great sporting events - the World Cup of football (soccer to us stateside), three great tenors and one masterful conductor (Zubin Mehta) were brought together in one of the world's great cities - Rome -- for a special evening that we are blessed to have been able to listen to again and again.

The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.

The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!

The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.

Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

Connie Francis Millennium Collection.......2007-05-29

This CD is Great!!! I forgot what a great singer Connie was and still is. It's wonderful to hear some of her all time hits like Stupid Cupid, Who's Sorry Now, etc. Takes me back to my high school days.

Connie Francis possessed a wonderful voice when she was in her prime in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Her rich, warm and vibrant voice attracted much deserved attention wherever and whenever she performed. Connie performed later on in her life but the songs on this CD do indeed represent her very best work.

The CD starts off with one of Connie's signature songs entitled "Who's Sorry Now?" Connie breathes new life into this much older song; and her voice charms you as Connie expresses every little nuance in all the lyrics to this song. The musical arrangement reflects forethought; the chorus in the background adds a certain type of poignancy to this ballad. "Stupid Cupid," a song with a much more lighthearted set of lyrics, follows this. The melody is catchy and the arrangement again makes use of a chorus to enhance the beauty of the song. Connie sings this to perfection!

Other great ballads on this CD include "My Happiness" conducted by the very talented David Rose; the strings on this number complement the beauty of Connie's voice brilliantly. No wonder all of the songs on this track set charted very high! "Lipstick On Your Collar" boasts a somewhat happy, silly melody that belies the sadness Connie expresses as she sings of her man who cheated on her. "Among My Souvenirs" features Connie and the musicians in total harmony--fantastic! "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" deals with unrequited love; and "Where The Boys Are" explores Connie's desire to find her one true love.

"Mama" sports a beautiful musical intro; and Connie sings so sensitively about her late mother that you will invariably begin to think of your own mother. Many people will relate to this song; and the lyrics that are in Italian infuse this ballad with a bittersweet sentimentality that one rarely finds in even the greatest of ballads. Connie's voice is in perfect form; and the strings on this number add a certain dramatic effect that make you miss your own mother regardless of whether she is living apart from you or she has passed.

The CD ends very strong with the exceptionally upbeat "Vacation." I like how the remastering kept the slight echo effect of Connie's voice as she gleefully expresses the excitement of being young and free from school "under summer stars." This song packs such a wallop that you want to jump up and dance for joy just listening to it! The melody is so catchy that it is positively infectious; you won't forget this number anytime soon!

The liner notes have wonderful color photos of Connie and you also get an essay about Connie written by Joseph F. Laredo.

Connie Francis dominated the charts for several years in the late 1950s and early 1960s--and for good reason, too. Hers was a young, fresh voice that expressed so many emotions precisely the way people experienced them in real life. People could relate to Connie for her energy as well as the topics of which she sang.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of Connie Francis and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this CD, too.

I enjoyed listening to the CD very much. I enjoy 'oldies' music but I just wish that for a millennium collection there would have been more selections on this CD. Still, I'm very glad that I purchased it.

HO HUM.......2006-05-20

Americans only seem to remember Connie for her many hits which was not her best material. It made her famous and rich and sent her career sailing farther than any other female singer. But the great Connie Francis can be found in her later work Try "Standards", the 3 South Africian collections (hard to get). You'll hear the REAL Connie. I am glad people are still buying her records, even if it is the oft time released hit collections, but she deserves better and should be acknowledged as the fine song stylist that she still is...as she currently tours and the audiences love her. Bravo Connie. You are one of the very few fine singers left that can still carry a tune. And boy can you carry it! WOW!

Connie Francis was the Maria Callas of Pop music. Her incredible popularity in the 1950's and early 1960's was unmatched.... she was the girl every father wanted for a daughter and every boy wanted for his girl. Her singular, sing-songy, heartbreaking voice was very similar to that of the great Patsy Cline's, partly in fact that not only did they both have that little "cry" in their voice, that almost no one can do successfully, but also in that they could take pretty much any material, no matter how minor, and make it good, sometimes great. But fame and popularity are usually followed by heartache, and Connie Francis' career was no exception. It was dominated and controlled, we later learned, by her domineering and controlling father, who made her every career decision, based on what he and the industry perceived to be her good-girl image. He famously kept a hawk-like watch on his precious commodity/daughter, including destroying the relationship with the person that she always referred to as the love of her life, Bobby Darin. Her career waned in the 1960's, due mostly to changing musical tastes, but she had forever carved out a solid niche as one of the most popular girl singers of the 20th century. She continued to perform in public, mostly in smaller venues. It was while appearing in such a place, in Westbury, New York, that the now famous, very violent sexual assault occurred , forever changing her life.
The great career, and, apparently, the great voice had ended. Bad marriages and bad business decisions followed, along with family tragedies. She retreated from public life, save for the occasional tabloid intrusion. Further publicity surrounded not only her lawsuit against The Westbury, where her assault occurred, but that the trauma of that event had caused her to permanently lose her voice. Her behavior was reported to be increasingly erratic. She further withdrew. She did not reappear for years, until she authored her auto-biography, where many of the facts from her pained past came to light. Anyone who saw her comeback on Dick Clark's show around this same period will never forget it. This girl that was so loved by so many had her voice back, and the audience reaction and the tears in Dick Clark's eyes were a natural, spontaneous, honest reaction to a totally unstaged, rare outpouring of genuine affection, that had more to do with sincere appreciation than in maybe the perfection or imperfection of her voice. About 10 years or so ago, a group of my friends and I saw that she was appearing in Ft.Lauderdale, so we thought we'd have a laugh and go see her, it'd be fun in a campy kind of way....very "Where The Boys Are." Well, any preconceived thoughts about the reasons why we were attending quickly gave way to awe at the way this lady had this audience in the palm of her hand from the moment she swept onstage. It wasn't a performance...she was there amongst friends that she knew loved and admired her. When she introduced her mother to the audience from the front row, then proceeded to sing one of her greatest hits, "Mama", directly to her in a voice that reached the heavens, well....there was not a closed jaw nor dry eye in the house, and the standing ovation that sprung up on the last incredible notes was only a reflex to true greatness. I have had very few moments like this in live performing, and I've seen alot of them. This is the kind of reaction and loyalty Connie Francis elicits, due not only in that she represents nostalgia for an increasingly bygone time and innocence, but that her natural talent and beautiful voice brought joy to so many, from grandmothers to teens to the troups in VietNam. This 20th Century Masters Collection is a good place not only to reacquaint yourself to the voice and songs that will undoubtedly bring a big smile to your face and a tear to your eye, but also for those not acquainted with this voice that was such a big part of Pop music , and allows her to remain one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Though Connie Francis leads a very private life, and has been out of the spotlight for many years, her inherent dignity and musical legacy will always insure a big spot in the hearts of those millions that her music touched. Good compilation- of bits and pieces.......2007-07-02

I was excited to see such a great collection of classics, but I was really disappointed to listen and discover that many tracks are shortened dramatically. A fraction of Rhapsody in Blue- a ridiculously short fragment of Bethoveen Ninth Symphony- "Ode to Joy" a tiny part of the first movement of Rachmoninov's Piano Concerto no.3.

I'd rather have fewer tracks and the complete movements.

Good and inexpensive collection.......2007-03-17

EMI's Best Classics 100 provides six CDs with seven hours of selected classical music. The cover does a poor job of portraying who does the selecting and who performs the piece -- information inside however does detail the symphonies being recorded. Recordings from the Polish Chamber, Berlin Symphonies, Royal Philharmonic etc are mentioned. The recording quality is good and the price is low, representing a good purchase for a general collection.

Very relaxing to listen to .......2007-03-07

I'm a new fan to Andre Rieu. I didn't start getting into his music until I caught his Christmas special on my local PBS station last year. I found his performances highly energetic and playful which is rare in this often serious musical genre. After catching a repeat performance of "Tuscany", I decided to make the cd version my next Andre Rieu purchase. Whenever I listen to "Tuscany", I can easily see Andre Rieu performing with his orchestra. His skills as a violinist is exquisite. He is very subtle and is never out of tune. "Tuscany" begins with three of the most beautiful classical numbers I have ever heard. The beautiful orchestral melodies puts me at ease. I wished that the cd included "The Rose" (the Bette Midler tune) that can be seen on the dvd. I loved the operatic version. It would have been a nice addition to the cd. Of all the operatic numbers my favorite has to be "Ode to Joy". I have to admit though the singers have a terrible tendency to caterwaul on the songs which can be quite disconcerting for these ears. On the other hand the same can be said about a lot of opera singers as well as modern pop singers. There wasn't a single song on the cd that I didn't enjoy listening to. Andre Rieu's love for music really does shine through his music here. I hope some day I will have the opportunity to see him perform live. I don't think nothing can compare to seeing this talented artist live. Until then his cds will do nicely.

What wouldn't I give to have been enjoying this magnificent program in that beautiful square in Italy? Fantastic performance of unbelievabe quality and program choices. I wouldn't trade this DVD for anything.

I'm an Andre Rieu fan and can definitely review this CD as one of his best! It was well-recorded with good sound quality, and you can hear the excitement of that evening in Tuscany as you listen to this CD. I would also recommend the DVD/Video of that performance.

Superb Introduction to Hovhaness.......2007-05-24

This is a superb introduction to the works of Alan Hovhaness, a long-neglected 20th Century American Composer. The Trumpet Concerto (Khrimian Hairig) is well-played and has a serious thoughtful quality to it. This work should be performed more often by orchestras. The Guitar Concerto is also entertaining and well-played and deserves more playing time with larger orchestras. The Symphony No. 60 (!) is a work more typically associated with Hovhaness - upbeat positive music with no ties to the modern school of classical music. The conductor Gerard Schwartz has spent much of his career championing the works of lesser known American composers and does a great job here. The recording is excellent as well.

Hovhaness on Naxos.......2007-03-07

The reputation of the American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911 -- 2000) continues to grow. Hovhaness was a prolific composer of 67 symphonies and about 400 other works. He wrote in a highly personal, mystical style that emphasized his Armenian roots, his devotion to nature, and his interest in Eastern thought and music. His music is accessible and enjoyed substantial popular appeal during the later years of the composer's life. But it was not always well-received by critics.

This CD is the third that Naxos has devoted to the music of Hovhaness in its "American classics" series. It offers two world-premiere recordings. These releases offer an outstanding opportunity at a budget price to get to know Hovhaness' music. The first two CDs featured Hovhaness early cello concerto and symphony no. 22, the "City of Light" and a collection of three of Hovhaness' six symphonies for wind band. The most recent, CD offers three works in differing forms from relatively early in Hovhaness' career to near the end. Gerard Schwarz, music director of the Seattle Symphony (Hovhaness spent the final years of his life in Seattle) and long a champion of the composer conducts the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. It is good to see a European orchestra offer sympathetic performances of Hovhaness in a short early work, and in the first recordings of a guitar concerto, and a late symphony. The composer's widow, Hinako Fujihara Hovhaness, has written excellent notes for the CD.

The CD opens with a work called "Khrimian Harig", opus 49, composed during the mid-40s. This is a work of about 8 minutes for orchestra and solo trumpet, played here by the orchestra's first trumpet, Lars Ranch. This is a highly lyrical, mystical work in which the trumpet represents an ancient Armenian prophet leading his people through persecutions to the path of faith. Much of the work is call-and-response between trumpet and orchestra. Hovhaness later adopted this work into a composition titled "Return and Rebuild the Desolate Places" opus 213 which appears on the earlier Naxos CD of Hovhaness' music for wind band.

Hovhaness' guitar concerto opus 325 was composed in 1979 and it is performed here by the American guitarist and composer David Leisner. This three movement work is highly idiomatic for the guitar and balances the voice of the instrument well against the larger forces of the orchestra. In the opening movement, slow, ominous statements of a theme for orchestra and bells alternate with long, guitar solos of a reflectively Spanish cast. The middle movement is in a concertante style as the guitar part alternates with a variety of solo passages for bassoon, cello, wind choir, and violin. The finale begins dramatically in a statement for the full orchestra. The stern orchestral writing alternates througout with softer, lyrical sections for the soloist. This is an intriguing, successful work in a difficult genre.

The final work on the CD is the Symphony no. 60 "To the Appalachian Mountains" opus 396 which also receives its first recorded performance. Hovhaness wrote this work in 1985 under a commission to celebrate the cultural heritage of the State of Tenessee. Apparently, the work was not well received in its opening performances, and that is unfortunate. This is one of Hovhaness' longer symphonies, over one-half hour in length, and it is lovely. Hovhaness combines his love for eastern music and nature with passages of distinctively American folk themes, virtually in the manner of Aaron Copland's popular works. With good reason, the composer referred to this work as his "Americana" symphony.

The work opens with a slow passage for flute and harp followed by a long flowing melody for strings. Near the end of the movement, the melody turns into a fugue, backed by pulsating drums and chimes. The second movement is an allegro which opens with a folklike mountain theme in the strings. This is followed by a melancholy English horn solo soon joined by the flute. After an outburst by the full orchestra, the folk theme returns to close the movement. The brief third movement opens with the harp and is based upon an old mountain tune called "Parting Friends." The finale opens with a large, slowly rocking theme in the strings followed by sections reminiscent of mountain dances before the opening material returns with brass and bells to close the work. I loved this symphony, particularly in its use of folk-sounding material (all of which were originally composed, with the exception of the tune in the third movement) and in its imaginative orchestration.

Listeners wanting to get to know Hovhaness and his distinctive style will enjoy this CD and its companions on Naxos. I am looking forward to further releases of Hovhaness' music in the "American classics" series.

Guitarist John Williams (no, not John Williams the soundtrack composer) adds to his fine catalog of impeccable recordings with Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar. But this isn't just a best-of collection (though some of his greatest work is included here) since the disc contains three new recordings. Among the new tracks, Fauré's Pavane is a real stunner, a short but gorgeous piece originally meant for orchestra and choir, where Williams's guitar sounds as though it always belonged there. We get Williams at his most interpretative--his arrangements of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 3 and Piazzolla tango Verano porteno--and his most serene (the "Cavatina" theme from the movie Deer Hunter). Let's face it, some fine classical guitarists can lull their listeners into near comatose states with their instrument; Williams, on the other hand, is just the opposite. His gorgeous tone, inventive arrangements, and interesting repertoire continue to make the classical guitar sound exciting. The Aranjuez Adagio is Perfection.......2007-03-01

The second movement adagio of the Aranjuez concert is one of my favourite pieces, a very difficult one to get right. I've listened to well over a dozen variations, the one on this CD, track 19, is an absolute gem. Just by itself is reason enough to own this CD. The only other Aranjuez performance that's even worth mentioning in the same breath is Julian Bream's, track 2 of the CD titled just "Julian Bream", with the Monteverdi orchestra. Both are just stunning performances, as close to perfection as it gets. Julian's is a bit stronger on the guitar than the one here.

The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!.......2006-04-19

If you had to call modern classical guitar by another name, it would be John Williams. A student of none other than the brilliant Andres Segovia himself, John has shown over the years to have learnt a great deal from the master and has himself developed simply impeccable technique.

As a guitarist myself who has been struggling all these years with "Cavatina", it always amazes me how effortlessly John makes the tune sound so simple and as if two guitarists are playing, one for the accompanyment and one for the melody and yet it's all him! Not only are the tracks representative of John's great talent but they also represent some of the most famous and challenging pieces to play.

Another great example of this is "Asturias(Leyenda) by Albeniz, a hauntingly beautiful and deceptively simple-sounding piece. We also get pieces that span the centuries from J.S. Bach and Vivaldi to Stanley Myers and York ending with the brilliant second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez".

Although the sound quality isn't brilliant as some tracks sound better mastered than others, overall this is a great one disc introduction to John Williams' work and comes highly recommended.

Great CD!.......2007-03-07

There is no question in my mind that Eric Clapton is an amazing musician. I think he would have to be among the top ten musicians in the era of 1960-Present. In one ranking of the top guitarists of all time, he placed 4th.

This album is terrific. While it is rather brief (not really geared towards long trademark guitar solos), it really shows Eric's talent and the diversity of the music he's played.

I highly recommend this!

Very Disappointing.......2007-02-28

Even for $6.88 at Sam's Club, this Millennium Collection CD was no bargain. It's so bad I couldn't even finish listening to it! Where did they get these cuts? They sound so muddy and poorly mixed that they must have been practice session tapes retrieved from the dumpster. The various instruments and voices keep fading in & out so you can't follow the music. Plus, the tempos and overall sounds are very different from the "definitive" versions most of us think of. I never thought it was possible to mess up a Clapton song, but UMI proved me wrong. And the liner notes? --None in this cardboard packaged "green" version.

Argh, another Clapton compilation!? Yes, but it is a fine one this time. Very good sound - especially on the Derek tracks.

I have a lot of EC compilations, but this one is rated among the best.

Clapton receives a clapping review!!.......2007-01-10

This is a MUST for all Eric Clapton fans! I have so many sweet memories of these songs and this CD brings it all back again!

Clapton excels with his roots in blues, rock and country--but Clapton's worthy of better than this CD "retrospective.".......2006-12-26

Eric Clapton remains one of the most respected musicians we've ever seen. His vocals and music are beautifully arranged works of art that appeal to many people because of his roots in R&B, rock and country. Clapton even helped to introduce America to reggae with his cover of Bob Marley's song entitled "I Shot The Sheriff." Many people know this to be true, so then why is this CD so lacking as a retrospective?

Don't get me wrong: The CD has great tracks on it: the passionate ballad entitled "Layla;" the high-spirited rendition of J. J. Cale's "After Midnight;" the reggae influenced hit "I Shot The Sheriff;" and the memorable ballad entitled "Bell Bottom Blues." The sound throughout is excellent even on my portable CD player. Clapton performs with great sensitivity and passion; and look for both Rita Coolidge and Yvonne Elliman on back-up vocals on several songs on this album.

However, a big problem arises pretty quickly. There is no music on this retrospective "best of" CD after 1978. Clapton is credited with performing great music for a long, long time since 1978--why isn't any of that represented here? The CD clocks in at an anemic 47 minutes; the producers certainly could have added one or two more songs. No "Tears In Heaven?" No "Sunshine Of Your Love?" I agree with the reviewer who writes that the CD entitled The Cream of Clapton is a much better choice--and a much better buy. You get a lot more Clapton for your money for just $1.50 more--and the sound quality will be good, too.

The liner notes do boast some great pictures of Clapton; and Scott Schinder contributes a essay about Clapton's career. Unfortunately, Schinder's essay about Clapton's work ends with Clapton's late `70s work. I guess he couldn't write about Clapton's artistry if it wasn't on this disc. (Sigh.)

If you merely want a brief introduction to Eric Clapton's earlier work during the 1970s, then this IS a CD for you to consider. However, you'll get a much better feel for Clapton's artistry if you choose The Cream of Clapton and/or Clapton Chronicles - The Best of Eric Clapton. Clapton fans will be disappointed in the brevity of this album. The sound is great; and the song selection is also very good; so I give this four stars. This cannot be a five star review. Sorry, 20th Century Masters, but you've got to come up with something much more comprehensive than this to score a grand slam!

Bravo!.......2000-07-22

I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florence during my trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it has captured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favorite of all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumental and can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir the wanderlust for a trip back to Italy! A must for every romantic!

Outstanding compilation of the Italian classics,.......1999-05-01

I have been a music lover for years. This CD introduced some Italian music to me that I was not familiar with. I listen to this music very often...it is almost theraputic in effect. I have never heard more beautiful music together on one CD. You won't regret getting this one!
