This CD is great! Michael Davenport is an awesome bass clarinet player, and Kimberly is wonderful on the piano. It's really nice to have an entire CD of bass clarinet music, and I hope there'll be more from them in the future! =)

    The Godowsky-Schubert song transcriptions aren't very similar to the Liszt, (this is a given), but it's unfair, I tell you, unfair that everyone is familiar with the Liszt(s), whereas only a small few even know the Godowsky(s) exist(s), especially since the Godowsky(s) are far superior! They're so moving, so spiritual, and every note is just so well placed. These transcriptions are even closer to getting at the true meaning of the text(s) than Schubert could achieve, and they're using Schubert's music! The version of the Passacaglia on this disc is my favorite. There are only five versions of it out there, of course I have them all, but this one, it's perfect, absolutely perfect. Carlo Grante is an angel, he has no equal, he's my favorite living pianist. He loses attention to sell-outs like Marc Andre Hamelin and Volodos, but I'm hoping this won't go on for too much longer. There is no going wrong with this disc (or anything by Carlo Grante, for that matter). It's a desert island selection.

    I purchased this CD directly from Duo Alea at a performance, but wanted to add my review to Amazon to encourage others to have a listen! Duo Alea perform beautifully together - wonderful chamber music - but this recording is also worth listening to because of the unique repertoire. I really like the music of Wolfgang Gabriel, and there's a lot of it here to explore!

      More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde
