The priest Giuseppe Cavallo was Maestro di Canto of the Conservatorio de Santa Maria de Loreto from 1672 until his death in 1684. Otherwise, virtually nothing is known about the composer, and it is only due to the musical archive of the Oratorio di Napoli, a treasure trove of rare scores, that a handful of Cavallo's works survive, including Il Giudizio Universale. This sacred oratorio presents Christ and Saint Michael, a pair of angels, two mortals, and four souls--two damned, two blessed--and begins with Christ commanding the angels to bring on the Last Judgment. What follows is a finely crafted musical drama, except for the confusion caused when the otherwise immaculately presented album fails to reveal which of the seven singers (two sopranos, three tenors, and one bass) is singing which parts. All you can be sure of is that Christ is the excellent bass, Giuseppe Naviglio.

Don't let the startling double-time opening of this Gloria put you off--listen with an open mind and you'll be surprised at how much sense it makes. Rinaldo Alessandrini's reading has many such surprises; some movements are taken very quickly, others surprisingly slowly, yet his choices seem fresh instead of perverse. The Magnificat is lesser known and thus less surprising, but it's every bit as lively. The soloists all sing nicely (although Biccire doesn't blend well in the soprano duet); the clear-voiced York and vigorous Mingardo provide imaginative ornaments. The excellent French chorus Akademia and Alessandrini's orchestra don't miss a single one of Alessandrini's beats. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Best Gloria buy.......2002-05-10
Gloria starts VERY fast but Allesandrini give us a very special Gloria with great singing (and he slow it down after a while... tempi is probably something you find veryy odd, special but he seems to give us a new great dimension of this work AND it works). This must be one of the best Gloria versions out there.
Magnificat was a big surprise for me never heard before and it is gorgeous, splendid performed.
Sound and overall quality is superb. This was my first Opus 111 set (record company) and I am more than satisfied.
