5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Confirming Illinois' Assessment.......2004-01-27

The reviewer from Shaumburg is absolutely correct in his or her review: the sound of these discs is magnificent and the organ, used in a few tracks, is very "cool" (if that word may be used). If you haven't heard the Pomp Marches in their entirety, here's a great way to do so; all are great compositions. And don't let the inexpensive cost deter you--the recording is luxurious and worth triple the price!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording, abundant music, superb value........2002-05-03

This recording is generous in its musical offerings. At mid-price (really super-bargain price on a per disc basis) you get a spendidly recorded and performed account of both symphonies and the marches as fillers. While there are slightly stronger Elgar couplings of the two symphonies with additional pieces (such as Solti on a Decca Double Decker and Previn on a Philips Duo) this set is thoroughly recommendable among the best Elgar recordings available.

The recording quality, made in the Abbey Road studios, throughout is luxurious and finely detailed at once (though the sound at the start of the 2nd symphony sounds slightly boxed in). The organ accompaniment in the Coronation March is wonderfully dramatic and powerful. Simply put there is great enjoyment to be found in this set at every turn.

5 out of 5 stars Hundred records contracts.......2004-11-16

Leonard Slatkin has recorded 100 performances, Pinchas Zukerman, 100 performances, and Janos Starker, 150 performances. Doesn't RCA/BMG need them anymore?
I had heard Symphony 2 on record, but there is an Enigma and vagueness about these symphonies. They take forever and never get to the point.
Enigma Variations were pleasant enough, enough to make me sleep. I recognized Elgar in the last variation. Elgar fits more of what I am with an optimism and bombast in the orchestral works. Zukerman's rendition of Elgar's Violin Concerto is off-key ala Paganini.
I don't know whether Starker's or Du Pre's Cello Concerto playing is the most satisfying. But I definitely like it.
I suppose these recording stem from the Seventies. I heard Zukerman on CBC Radio 2 talking so I know he is available.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disk.......2003-12-16

It's a good thing I have this recording on CD. I would have worn out several vinyl albums by now. This is absolutely specatacular music and music making. I'm astonished that this piece is not more widely know. This is Elgar in his best, Britishized Richard Strauss mode. Huge, gorgeous melodies. Structurely very tight. Amazing orchestration. Emotionally it packs a wallop. The middle movement of the scherzo makes my hair stand on end. The serene ending comes as a catharsis. This piece along with Walton's first are the high points to date of British symphonies. Hell, of all symphonies!

5 out of 5 stars grand and miniature elgar eloquently done.......2001-01-11

The Symphony performance won 'The Gramophone's' best orchestral recording accolade in 1977 (as an LP). There is an even better Boult version on a rare 'Proms' CD (from 1976), with a tremendous final climax, but this is absolutely compelling too. It's a truly symphonic approach. The music has status and grandeur - Elgar's 'nobilmente' in the structure, not just marvellous moments. The slow movement is interesting ; no heart-on-sleeve stuff but an absolutely even, serene, inevitable forward movement, a wonderful bridge between the mercurial scherzo and that grand finale. The playing is fine, the recording better than that. The little pieces are beautiful, charming and individual in their characterisation. These are great performances which never distort but breathe truth to the music in every bar.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great collections, with poor quality sound.......2003-01-09

I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.

There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.

It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.

I give 3 stars for this product.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection Of Romantic Era Music.......2002-09-05

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.

    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat lacking.......2001-03-28

    (referring to the entire collection)

The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music. However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting. Some lively pieces are played too slowly, and nearly all of them without emotion, keeping the set out of reach from being included in a true classical collection. Despite all that, the sheer number and range of pieces (along with the low price) make this a collection well suited for the new classical listener.

    Product Description

Classical music is hot. In fact, it is probably the biggest story of the l990s in the recording industry. Classical crossover hits like Nigel Kennedy's recording of Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons', Henryk Gorecki's 'Symphony no. 3', the Gregorian Chant album by the monks of Silo, and Michael Nyman's score for the Jane Campion film 'The Piano' - to name just a few - have broken out of classical music's traditional bounds and hit the pop charts. Suddenly, a classical recording that sells 10,000 units is no longer pushing the envelope; today's top classical releases are reaching sales heights formerly reserved for pop icons like Madonna and the Rolling Stones. This stunning turnaround in classical music's marketing power did not come out of nowhere, though. Celestial Harmonies helped set the stage for it with its Adagio (Complete Edition) (19908-2) series. Since 1981, long before the current interest in classical music began, Celestial Harmonies' compilations have been used worldwide for relaxation, meditation and even music therapy. And in a stunning reversal of music industry rules, absolutely no advertising or promotion was needed to achieve substantial sales figures. And while the rest of the classical world scurries around looking for the next big hit, Celestial Harmonies has released an updated digital version of an already proven winner: The Adagio series, a total of seven double-CDs. With sales of over 300,000 units in the past decade, the reason for the series' success is no mystery. As modern life has become increasingly complex and stressful, listeners have turned to music as a source of relief - especially the timeless, contemplative sounds of classical music. It seems that as the pace of our lives gets progressively faster, the music that many listeners are seeking is increasingly slow. The Adagio series, presents over seventeen hours of the world's finest slow music, making it the largest such collection anywhere. Adagio I includes the famous 'Air' from

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent digital recording.......2003-03-18

I realize that classical music is something were there is a range of conesuirship, and I represent perhaps the lowest tier of appreciators. In my wholly uniformed opinion, "Adagio I" is an excellent classic music collection, containing well-executed pieces ranging from a few instruments to full orchestral ensembles, representing a variety of composers. The digital recording is remarkable, and an unexpectedly full sound comes from the CD. The 2 1/2 length is nice, split onto two disks.

My favorite pieces are the justifiably famous "Suite No.3 In D Major: Air" and the goose-bump inducing "Concierto De Aranjuez: Adagio." The style of the music is mostly soft, and relaxing but there are thrilling moments peppered in. The violin and the guitar have wooed me to contentment many evenings, and do so know as I am writing this review. An enjoyable CD set.
