A+.......2007-05-10
To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.
Even for a trained jazz musician who thinks classical artists are overhyped, this stands out as one of the best albums........2007-04-11
Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.
Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'
I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.
Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.
Fantastic.......2006-08-11
Midori produces some amazing sounds out of her violin!
You cant go wrong with Encore! Shes brilliant.
Enjoyable listening.......2005-09-24
I enjoyed this cd especially the first three pieces. Midori played Sarasate and Paganini pretty well.
very interesting.......2005-09-13
I as watching (and listening!) her play live in Dubrovnik this summer. In this record she is equally brilliant as she is when playing live!

Very good CD. Filled with great classical music. Would recommend to anyone.
Romantic Mood Music of High Level.......2005-11-16
Collections like this are nice as an alternative to Ipod type collections, or multi-CD shuffling, achieving a nice balance and variety of compositions.
Here gathered around "romantic" classical theme, have the likes of Dvorak, Strauss, Mozart, Pachelbel, et al. Acclaimed performances by Denon Classical catalog performers such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, David Oistrakh, etc.
For two disc set of such superb quality at such a reasonable price, this is very much a play often collection.

Customer Reviews:
A finely composed collection of not always substantial pieces, played with chic and juicy tone.......2006-12-19
Volume 31 of Sony's Isaac Stern tribute "A life in music" brings together a collection of "encores", with recordings that date from the early years of the violinist's career: principally December 1947 and August 1952. The collection is assembled with taste, the 1947 recordings (Sarasate to Bloch and Dinicu to Falla - I don't know why Amazon lists Milhaud last, as it comes on track 16 out of 24) framing the ones from 1952. The sonics are excellent, with the piano sounding a bit subsidiary but the violin coming out excellently, and there's no gain in vividness that I can perceive in the 1952 violin when compared to the one from 1947. All the 1947 recordings were published on a single Columbia LP by the way (ML 4324), while the ones from 1952 were scattered on various records, and three of them never released until this CD.
And these three previously unpublished pieces are not always trifles: Jean-Marie Leclair's Sarabande et Tambourin (in Kreisler's arrangement) can qualifiy as such, and perhaps even Szymanowski's "Chant de Roxane" from his opera King Roger in Kochanski's arrangement, but certainly not the same's "La Fontaine d'Aréthuse", the 2nd movement of "Mythes", his (second) violin and piano sonata in all but name. Stern's recording makes one lament that he did not record the complete work.
By essence the pieces are snippets, not always substantial, but played by Stern with chic and his customary juicy tone, and Zakin is an efficient partner. My favorite are those with a folk-music tinge: the Jewishness of Bloch's Nigun, the 2nd movement of his "Baal Sheem" violin and piano suite, which Stern went on to record complete with Zakin in 1961 (now on volume 28 of the Sony Stern collection), the middle-east inspired melismae of Szymanowski's pieces, Dinicu's "Hora Staccato" in Heifetz' arrangement (the epitome of the wild Gipsy violin), Falla's Spanish Popular Suite (Kochanski's arrangement again).
There's more substantial stuff on other issues from this Isaac Stern tribute (hence my four-star rating), and this one to be fully appreciated needs perhaps to be heard bit by bit rather than complete, but there is some exceptional music and music-making here.
Isaac Stern At His Best ! !.......2001-11-21
It's hard for me to believe no one has reviewed this CD! This CD contains encores for Violin and Piano played by one of the greatest violinist of the Century, Isaac Stern along with his life long accompanist Alexander Zakin.
Here is Stern at his best..The Technique, the Tone, the Shadings, and the Coloring are all perfect. All these recordings on this CD come from in my opinion, Stern's best period... the Late 40's early 50's.
His recordings of the Melodie by Gluck and Bird as a Prophet by Schumann are the best I ever heard..and that is including the recordings by Heifetz, Oistrakh, Milstein and Perlman. What a Beautiful Sound!. Also this CD contains previously unreleased material.

atmospheric Szymanowski.......2007-01-10
I first came to Szymanowski's music through his chamber music and his beautifully atmospheric liturgical pieces. Born in a part of Poland that's now part of the Ukraine, Szymanowski's music was not immediately taken up by his Polish compatriots during his lifetime, but there seems to be a worldwide burst of enthusiasm lately for his music, long overdue and well deserved. Influenced as a composer by Scriabin, Debussy, and of course Chopin, Szymanowski's music remains tonal, but imbued with a shifting sense of loosening the moorings of classical harmony and outline, breathing extraordinary new impetus into the still nascent Second Viennese School that was yet to come to full fruition. This recording of the Violin Concertos and the accompanying Nocturne and Tarentella should go a long way toward securing his evocative, highly individual musical voice a vibrant place in the mainstream of classical music performance. The First Concerto, especially, reveals explicitly much of what makes Szymanowski's music a constant surprise, rewarding, thrilling, even sensual. First, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka's violin playing is stunningly fine. He consistently reaches into the music with intelligence, and the recorded sound is beautiful. Highly atmospheric conditions of the piece are never allowed to drift toward the slightest falsity. Here is a first-rate fiddler! And it's hard to praise highly enough the playing of the Polish State Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Karol Stryja throughout this entire recording. What an orchestra, and having encountered Stryja's work before, what a conductor! Finally, the sonics here are really special, something that has become a praiseworthy standard of Naxos' remarkable recordings. Classical music recordings would be impoverished without the impeccable contributions of this label. Recommended with real enthusiasm, coupled with a recommendation to check out additional Szymanowski scores, especially his wondrous Lieder Der Märchenprinzessin, the consistently satisfying piano works, the well known Third Symphony, and his chamber music scores. The Violin concertos in this recording are a perfect place to start a wonderful journey of discovery.
Amazing.......2003-05-11
I've become extremely enamored of Szymanowski's work lately & the Violin Concerto #1 was a major discovery for me. Absolutely exquisite -- like incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" written by Scriabin. And the utterly over-the-top Tarentella is a real bonus.

For the classical generalist........2000-09-25
If you are looking to stock your classical musical shelves with a broad range of recognizable pieces, then this disc is for you. Otherwise, this album is not that great. Essentially it consists of the overplayed classical standards that happen to be Polish. If you are looking for a better introduction to modern Polish classical then try "The Varsovia Quartet play string quartets from Poland" (OLYMPIA OCD 328). And hey, if you find it let me know. That particular gem is out of print.

Product Description
This recording’s selections exemplify many of the features found throughout the extensive but largely little known body of Polish violin-keyboard writing. The wide stylistic variety parallels the diversity within Poland’s cultural traditions shaped, in turn, by a long history of frequently changed borders and territorial makeup. Starting long before Poland’s culturally progressive “Golden Age” (mid 15th-16th centuries), these connections occurred through trade, religious, intellectual, artistic, marriage and other contacts. As a result, this music, like the rest of Poland’s culture, is generally western-oriented but sometimes includes distinctive eastern elements. Folk elements are often equally important. Most obvious is the use of Polish dances, e. g. the mazurka, but dance-related rhythmic figures, or their characteristic accents on normally less-strong beats or rhythmic subdivisions are often transplanted to non-dance settings. The historical association of ! Polish folk traditions with fiddles and then the violin itself (long Poland’s most popular folk instrument), is so close that Poland’s classical violin performance tradition reaching back to c. 1500 can also be considered to be an extension of her much longer folk practice. While the earliest of Poland’s many widely-famous violinists date from the 19th century, numbers of Polish violinists were already known for their high level of performing throughout Europe in the 16th century. Likewise, effective keyboard writing on this CD reflects a rich Polish keyboard tradition, sometimes with the composer being either a performing pianist ( like Chopin and Paderewski) or able to play the instrument with a high degree of accomplishment (Bacewicz).
