5 out of 5 stars Worship CD.......2007-07-05

A fantastic worship cd with a difference - it will take me a log time to get sick of this one. While I already knew most of the songs, it was good to hear them again differently.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-27

I'm a little biased. When I heard his music on the radio I "liked" it, but not "loved" it. However, on a whim, I recently saw him in concert and had a great time. Seeing Lincoln live offered me the opportunity to see the man behind the music. He's a worship leader that loves the Lord and is genuine about who he is and his calling right here, right now.

5 out of 5 stars Lincoln's best...SO FAR!! :D.......2007-06-14

This is a much recommended album from one of the most inspiring artists I have had the pleasure of meeting, and also, working with when at our common church personally...he is truly a class act in person as well...I can remember when he recorded some of the songs on this album, I was totally moved to tears (literally)...

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Praise and Worship.......2007-05-29

Lincoln Brewster is among the best when it comes to praise and worship music. This CD is a great demonstration of that.

From start to finish, this is packed full of very good tracks. At least one is absolutely outstanding: 'Everlasting God'. That tune is amazing. The ending with the child reading from Isaiah 40 is one that may make the hair stand up on the back of one's neck. It is powerful and unforgettable. That song is at least a six on a 1-5 scale.

I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-05-13

Lincoln's "Let the Praises Ring" CD is just awesome from track 1 throughout the entire CD. His guitar playing, band, & vocals uplift you so one cannot help but sing along. What a wonderful voice and musical talent he has been blessed with! You can feel his energy in each song.

Since our move from Northern California, we definitely miss worshipping along with Lincoln and our former church; but, this CD helps A LOT!

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

5 out of 5 stars A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

5 out of 5 stars Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2005-08-01

Love it! I bought the DVD when my daughter was only a few months old, its nice to have on while kids play. I play the CD in the car or even when they nap in their rooms sometimes and I sing along with it all the time. Really soothing and peaceful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2004-10-15

My sister has this CD for my nephew. I loved it so much I bought one for myself, even though it is written for a baby. It is a beautiful collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for car rides.......2004-05-08

My nine month old son love this CD. Whenever we are in the car and he gets the least bit fussy, I turn Praise Baby on and he settles within seconds. The vocals are in a higher range, perfect for little ears to hear and appreciate. The words are familiar and easy to learn so Mommy can sing along, too. If you want more upbeat songs, try Gregg Nash but for soothing, nothing beats Praise Baby.

Early in her career, Leontyne Price formed an artistic liaison with Samuel Barber that resulted in his composing the female lead in Antony and Cleopatra for her. The disastrous premiere of that opera prevented Price from making a complete recording--a tragic loss in my opinion. She did record excerpts, however, and we at least have this disc to document these and the many other Barber works that she performed with incomparable artistry. Opera singing being what it is, Price didn't often have the chance to sing in English, so these performances are not only historically important, they are uniquely communicative as well. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-28

Samuel Barber(1910-1981), an American composer who studied piano, composition and singing at the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. His works adhered largely to a lyrical, Romantic style within a loosely Classical framework. He left a rich legacy of more than 100 songs(only 37 published) and 3 operas in addition to many instrumental works...
Only a few of Barber's song texts come from American sources; more often he chose the work of Irish or English writers. He was drawn to 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915', a reflection of the American poet James Agee, because for him it vividly evoked his own childhood. With hints of blues and gently shifting rhythms, "Knoxville" is a mature expression of Barber's artistry as a musical poet and a master of orchestral color.
"The Hermit Songs" were first performed by Leontyne Price, soprano, with the composer at the piano at the Library of Congress, Washington,D.C..pn October 30, 1953. They are a setting of anonymous Irish texts of the eighth to thirteenth centuries written by monks and scholars. They are small poems, thoughts or observations, some very short, and speak in straightforward, droll, and often surprisingly modern terms of the simple life these men led, close to nature, to animals and to God.
I think a brief quote from one of my favorite of these Hermit songs sums up the kind of prose contained in most all of them: from 'The Monk and his Cat' :Pangur, white Pangur, How happy we are Alone together, Scholar and cat. Each has his own work to do daily; for you it is hunting, for me study......'
The music on this disc is well executed, and if you are a Barber advocate, it's a great collection of his song material. I happen to like MOST of his music, but it's for me a 'mood ' thing. He was born very close to where I live, so I guess I feel a kinship of sorts. I do think that he is one of the 'greats' in contemporary music!

5 out of 5 stars An American Voice of the Century.......2005-10-09

While there is no question that Leontyne's opulent voice - here young and lustrous in the "Hermit Songs" recital (1953!) would have been a magnet for any composer, her affinity for Barber is clear, and his for her. The studio recording of the "Hermit Songs" has a better acoustic, but this one is just as thrilling in interpretation, and a bit less studied - and it has the two James Joyce settings, as well.
The "Knoxville" is beautifully judged - soft and swinging to start, then opening up into the drama and poetry of the middle and late sections. The Eleanor Steber original commission will always set the standard, but Price expands it that much farther, with longer phrases, and an ineffable langour that both she and Steber identified as the "Southern" stamp on this music. It's universal, as far as I am concerned, but it exalts and breaks the heart at the same time. Agee and Barber drink from the same fountain here.
I have never heard the entire "Anthony & Cleopatra", again written for Price, so I can't judge the work as a whole, just these two numbers. I have a special affection for the first scene, however - "Give Me Some Music" shows Price, in her absolute vocal prime, complete mistress of color and mood, and the motive, "My man of men" reappears in her final, regal, death scene. When she sings "O happy horse/ who bears the weight of Antony!" - I swear, my hair curls, no matter how many times I hear it.
    In short, gotta have it.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Barber Disc.......2002-03-13

What a fabulous collection of music by Samuel Barber. Leontyne Price is at her absolute best in the songs. The entire Hermit Songs are here with four others. These recordings are of particular interest since Ms. Price performs with Samuel Barber at the piano. It is interesting to compare these recordings to the latter ones sung by Cheyrl Studer with John Browning at the piano for tempo changes.

The recording of Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is arguable the best of those available. Ms. Price sings with great sensitivity and Thomas Schippers and the New Philharmonia provide excellent support. Ms. Price said that Knoxville reminded her of her own childhood, and her commitment to the music comes through. I have the recording of Knoxville sung by Eleanor Steber, who commissioned this work, but I have always regarded the Price recording as the one to have.

The two excerpts from Antony and Cleopatra are of great interest since Ms. Price sang the role of Cleopatra at the premiere in 1966. Her performance here, also conducted by Schippers, is wonderful. The transfer to CD of these recordings is excellent. Perhaps the only down side is that the Hermit Songs were performed before an audience so there is applause between each song. After a while, this becomes monotonous. This disc is a must for anyone interested in Barber's music, and in particular for Knoxville.

5 out of 5 stars Price sings songs and arias written for her!!!.......2001-12-05

This CD on which Leontyne Price memorializes many of the songs and arias composed by Sam Barber with her in mind should be in every collection of those who appreciate Barber's vocal music and the magnificent voice of one of the world's greatest singers of the 20th century. The collaboration of Barber and Price on the "Hermit Songs" and others reveals the composer's affection for the singer and the singer's understanding of the dramatic intent of the word and music. Alone, Price's interpretation of "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is worth the price of the CD; it is singularly exquisite and cannot be matched! Price brings unmatched beauty, power, and understanding to the arias from "Anthony and Cleopatra" -- an opera composed with her voice in mind. It is indeed sad that Price never recorded "Vanessa," nor the song cycle "Despite and Still," nor the hauntingly beautiful "Sure on this Shining Night." You will not be disappointed if you buy this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Fab voice, OK music.......2001-08-07

What is it that everyone seems to adore about Samuel Barber's music for voice. The man clearly wrote some absolutely divine orchestral pieces, there's no disputing that. But his vocal work seems to be lackluster. Hermit Songs is an example of modern classical music at it's worst. Disjointed, unmelodic, and difficult to follow. Price who's diction is fabulous on the later Knoxville piece is mushy durin the Hermit Songs, her voice is young and fresh, but not particularly glorious. She does deserve praise however for her promotion of American Music

Knoxville 1915 is a much better piece than Hermit songs and has more lyrical moments, but it still sounds so modern. If it has just been an orchestral piece it might've been fabulous but that is unfortunately not the case. It's almost as if Barber wrote a piece for orchestra and wrote a seperate piece for voice and just joined them, whether they made sense together or not. Unlike Hermit Songs, Price's performance more than makes up for the lack of brilliance in the music. Her diction is amazingly clear, even Callas would be jealous and her voice soars, where the music allows her to at least.

The selections from A+C are worty enough, another unreal performance by Price, one wonders if there was a better interpretor of American Music ever, maybe Steber. These works are more traditional sounding and thus go over better, but they seem a bit bland, without Price infusing them with energy this listener would have lost interest

I have been looking for this lp for 20 years. I recorded the song "Holy Spirit" from an AM gospel radio station many years ago and I never found out who recorded the song. I finally found it tonight in my basement in a batch of gospel lps I purchased from ebay. This is an awesome cd, truly a classic.

The composer calls this work "a liturgical drama," but there is nothing dramatic about it; it is more aptly described by the title of its three main sections, "Stasis." Set to texts from the Greek and Russian Orthodox Easter service sung in English interspersed with ancient Greek words, it is scored for male voices and an odd combination of strings, winds, and extra-large percussion instruments including a Byzantine monastery bell, a Tibetan temple bowl, a tam-tam, and a simantron (a wooden board struck with a hammer). The music, in Tavener's characteristic medieval, monastic, Byzantine style, is devout, contemplative, very slow, with endlessly sustained notes and chords, and based on structurally determined repetition. Anchored by bass or descant drones, the chorus moves in parallel chordal progressions, alternating with ornate, melismatic solos, and punctuated by regularly repeated crashes from the bell and bowl. Variety is created through changes of key, vocal and instrumental texture, and motivic material. Several sections culminate in climactic buildups of volume and intensity. Some of the music is very beautiful, but its repetitiousness and basically unchanging character make a sense of monotony unavoidable. Perhaps only listeners who share Tavener's own deep spirituality can fully enter into his musical world. The performance by Chanticleer is wonderful. The voices float with a transparent, pure, otherworldly sound--it seems unbelievable that the altos and sopranos, who go up to high F's and G's, are really male singers--and the instruments match them perfectly in tone and style. --Edith Eisler

    1 out of 5 stars Please don't encourage him........2003-12-11

pretentious, pri-ten'shus, a. Full of pretension; pretending to or falsely claiming talents, skills, or qualities. This guy's got it all, mysterious sounding names for his compositions AND mysteriouser sounding chants and resonances, but most mysterioustist is how anyone can even stand to listen to this claptrap. Maybe that's why this jerk has gotten so much press, people don't understand his mystical Eleusinian sensibility and are curious as to what he knows that the rest of us don't. Well, here's a secret I'll be glad to share. Often, people with below average talent or inspiration tend to try to veil their inadequacies in whatever way they can. Apparently, Tavener has found his vehicle. At any rate, don't believe the hype: I laughed more when I heard this than when I sampled the Macho Man's rap album.

5 out of 5 stars No documentation? No surprise!.......2003-01-29

Just to respond to the comments about the lack of liner notes: When this work was recorded, the music was still wet on the page. Indeed, Tavener had approved several changes very late in the game, as you might expect. When you do a world-premiere recording of a brand new piece, you can't exactly round up the nearest musicologist and ask for a detailed essay about the music (as you might for, say, Josquin)!

Anyway, I found the piece quite moving, and the performance here is flawless.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the easily depressed.......2002-02-21

A powerful piece of music, with the characteristically beautiful performance that Chanticleer is famous for. The subject is not a happy one, and the music conveys the sense of dread and anguish that was probably Tavener's intent. This music is emotionally evocative, but will surely darken and make more somber whatever mood you start listening with, so let the listener take heed! I appreciate the brilliance of the performance, but I can't really say I *like* the music. Recorded in techologically pristine fashion, as we have come to expect from Chanticleer.

5 out of 5 stars Tavener and Chanticleer: a heavenly combination..........2002-02-14

John Tavener's Lamentations and Praises is almost indescribably perfect in its premiere recording by Chanticleer. As Chanticleer was the co-commissioner of this work, they have a great understanding of the music and the words. Their voices are grouped SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass/baritone, as is common in many liturgical choral pieces. The soprano voices of Matthew Alber, Christopher Fritzsche, and Ian Howell are simply amazing in their range and clarity. Not to take away from the other soloists in the lower ranges, but to hear male voices singing at such high octaves is nothing short of wondrous!

If you are new to Tavener, Lamentation and Praises is an excellent introduction to the "modern" period of his compositions that really started with Eternity's Sunrise, composed and performed in collaboration with the Academy of Ancient Music. Tavener has been composing from a very young age, and recording since the mid to late 1960s, when Tavener recorded The Whale on the Beatle's Apple label. It was an unqualified and riotous success. Tavener then and since has made frequent use of tape playback, unusual voicing combinations, Eastern and Byzantine vocal modalities, as well as a mix of contemporary and classical compositional forms to write simple and complex works for voice, chamber ensembles, and solo strings (most popularly his solo cello concerto, The Protecting Veil, is literally his most successful piece and has been recorded several times over by many cellists and orchestras.)

If you are familiar with Tavener's music of the past 15 years or so, then you will hear references in Lamentations and Praises to earlier works. For him a composition might undergo years of re-working, or he might borrow a motif or sound mode and bring it to a newer piece. For example, the melismatic vocal style heard here is found in his superbly dramatic sacred "cantata", We Shall See Him As He Is, recorded in a live performance at London's Proms circa 1989. That work is also divided into sections he called Ikons, each one a depiction of a significant event in the life of Christ. The melisma is also heard strongly in his dirge, Eis Thanaton, and in the stunning Innocence, recorded in collaboration with Martin Neary, Director of Music at Westminster Abbey. He also used tape playback on Tears of the Angels, as well as Eis Thanaton, among several others. The use of Asian/Eastern modes is also heard on last year's Total Eclipse, which also made us of melisma and Byzantine vocal modalities.

Tavener's use of the Ison or drone sound is found in many of his works as he uses it to represent the continuous or eternal/omnipresent existence of God. This is most evident in his work with the Tallis Scholars called Ikon of Light, where a continuous vocal line through the ENTIRE piece is used to represent God, who manifests his presence through the physical medium of light. In Lamentations you hear the Ison at different volumes and in different sections, not continuously, so it's not always apparent.

So many of these disparate elements are what make EXPERIENCING Tavener on disc so special, as you can return to those moments or Ikons that resonate most deeply within your psyche or your soul. For every person I truly believe Tavener's work speaks differently, but with great power to inspire all of us to greater and deeper contemplation.

Much comment has been made of Teldec (Warner Music) and Chanticleer not providing more information in the CD's booklet. While the liner notes are scant, they do give you some useful insight into how Lamentations is structured. If you want an in-depth knowledge of Tavener's compositional process, I'd very highly recommend two books: The Music of Silence: A Composer's Testament and Visions of Paradise. The first book is a series of discussions between Tavener and a music writer, the interviews having been conducted over several months. Visions of Paradise is a biography and offers a thorough and interesting survey of both the work and life of the composer, which are really one and the same for Tavener. Lastly, I found the photos in the Lamentations booklet to be both appropriate and beautiful, enhancing the overall packaging.

This CD is one of Tavener's greatest works!

5 out of 5 stars Nourishes the Soul.......2002-02-10

I would characterize this as divinely inspired music, designed to nurish the soul, regardless of the religious/spiritual orientation of the listener.

3 out of 5 stars My View Review.......2004-04-16

I felt the CD has some beautiful songs. I just feel that he should try to appeal to more than just 16-24. Some people are a little more traditional. He made no attempt to communicate with those of use who have been in church since child hood. True enough I am 28 and I do like contemporary urban gospel. He came really close with 'Uh Uh Peace'. The entire cd is wonderful I just believe that he should want to touch more than just one generation. For example: an a capella spiritual, a traditional sunday morning song with a foot stompin' hand clappin' feel of his own original words, maybe a country gospel toon. I just feel like he has boxed himself in to one avenue. I don't see the creativity.

Make no mistake, I love the CD. I listen to it regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Greg O'quin's title cut "Unh-Unh".......2003-05-08

If you don't have this CD, then you should get it in a hurry. I heard one cut ( title: Unh-Unh) and fell in love with it, then I bought the whole CD, and it is "AWESOME", (One of the cuts on this CD). This is definitely by far the best I have heard from Greg O'quin. As long as he (Mr. O'quin) keeps telling the storm, everything is going to be great. God has really worked in you with this project. It is rejoicing to my soul everytime I hear it (everyday, all-day). GOD IS "EVERYTHING" (another cut).

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect CD If Your Going Through A Storm.......2003-01-10

thiz cd is wonderful and it will minister to your soul if you are going through a storm because the songs help you get through your storm. the song Unh-unh! and I told the storm tells you what to tell your storm. I really liked the interludes and Greg's storm because he is real with what was going on in his life and how he made it through his storms because "my God surrounds us"

        5 out of 5 stars Anointed.......2002-06-06

Saints let me tell ya. When I first got the cd I was a pretty big O'quin fan. But when I put the cd in I got to the first couple of songs and judged them by the beat so I did what most people probably did and fast-forwarded to "I told the Storm (Remix)". Well I gave the cd another chance the next day at work and as I have been going through some thing I was praying and the Lord opened my ears and heart to "Awesome", "Unh-Unh!" and "I told the Storm" the Spirit began to sit in and minister to me. A word is what I receive (present tense) when I listen to it.
For anyone that's going through you need this cd for anyone that's not you need this cd b/c we all have storms come in our lifes.

        5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2001-09-17
