Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Andrew Parrott's first disc for Sony isn't the most cheerful debut imaginable--two funeral motets and a cantata mourning the death of a Saxon princess. But it's all Bach, so the music, however solemn, is sublime. Parrott experiments with the one-singer-per-part approach he's used for most of his Bach recordings: one motet and the cantata's opening chorus are sung by soloists; the other motet and the cantata's chorales get two singers per part. The singing and playing in the Trauer-Ode cantata are marvelous, probably the best available; the motets are beautifully done as well, but there's little to choose between this performance and the equally good one by Cantus Cölln (also performed one-singer-per-part). In any case, this disc is certainly worth having--especially for the Trauer-Ode. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

I only have to briefly comment that the works of John Dowland are simply wonderful. This work is dressed with the rich, enjoyable and fine interpretation provided by The Deller Consort. I have it and recommend to everyone who appreciates lute music !

5 out of 5 stars Fine collection of songs, well performed.......2002-08-07

First of all, this is an offset to the other "review" which is actually the rantings and ravings of a lunatic who thought she was posting a letter to some company where one might buy a perambulator.
Anyway, this CD has a sweet collection of Dowland songs, recorded in 1982. Paul Elliott and Mark Deller and Rosemary Hardy are all in fine voice.

PLEASE NOTE: The initial listing of recorded tracks is incorrect, the secondary listing is correct, beginning with track 1. "What if i never speed?"

this review is a complaint about service with the hope of it reaching someone who actually cares about the standard of service you provide and the way a customer with a genuine complaint about your service is treated. My daughter is eight months pregnant and decided to buy her pram from your company so looked through your direct catalogue and found the one she liked it offered a free cosy toes and changing bag and the page in the catalogue also offered a ten pound money off voucher.Armed with MY credit card we telephoned and ordered the pram but when she came to give the code for the voucher she was told that she could only use it instore she tried to argue that her nearest store was forty miles away and this was why she was using the catalogue and why put the voucher in the catalogue in the first place if you cant use it but was curtly told that was the rules then that was followed up by the offer on the cosytoes and changing bag only being available instore also, even after this she still decided to go ahead with the purchase so after the girl geting some details wrong three times, gave my credit card number and was told to expect delivery in a few days. The following Monday not one but two prams were delivered to her and on phoning she discovered that two prams had also been debited to my credit card. After tolerating a really bad attitude from a member of staff she finally spoke to a supervisor who said she would look into it and phone her back which they didn't, she had to make several phone calls before someone told her that the second pram would be picked up the folowing Thursday and my credit card would be credited the same day. Well sure enough the pram was picked up and as a token a set of cosytoes and changing bag were given to my daughter unfortunately they did not match the pram but nevertheless we thought that was that oh no it wasn't,. Meawhile as my husbands birthday is approaching I decided as a surprise that we would have a few days away so found a location I liked and booked it using my credit card only to find the booking cancelled due to there not being enough credit on my card on phoning my company I found out that I had not had the money refunded from your company so my daughter gets back on the phone only to encounter someone called Tracey with a real attitude problem who felt it necessary to lay the blame on my daughter again she had to ask to speak to a superior who said she would look into it and phone her back again she didn't so my daughter phoned back this morning and was again told she would be called back before 2p.m.when this didn't happen she again called back only to be told that the person who was supposed to call her back didn't want to speak to her. Now you tell me is this the sort of treatment a customer should expect? Idon't think so not only has an 8 month pregnant woman had to be put through unecessary stress but had to put up with all sorts of abuse from staff and to crown it all I have lost a surprise birthday present for my husband through incompetence. Let us just wait and see what explanation this company comes up with for this. I eagerly await you reply either on this site or by direct Email. yours angrily LINDA CONNOR

5 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty album cover.......2003-03-07

This record is an abolute must for those even remotely interested in Bach's works. Andrew Parrott has released many records using the One Voice Per Part theory, put forth by Joshua Rifkin. This one, by far has to be one of the better ones of his Bach releases.

The thick reverberation is thanks to the performance venue. This release was recorded in St. Jude's in Hampstead Gardens, London. The massive church sound is quite possibly a more accurate representation of what one might have heard in the Leipzig churches that Bach was responsible for music-wise. For me, the reverberation compliments the religious air of Bach's vocal works- especially the motets, two of which are recorded here, accompanying the Funeral-Ode, BWV 198.

With this record (which has a theme of death and the afterlife) Parrot prooves that such a small ensemble (which Bach would have likely used) can succesfully narrate the deepest human emotions just as well as, if not better than, a larger choir.

The voices are all excellent. They sparingly use vibrato, faithful to baroque performance practice. In the motet, "Komm, Jesu, Komm," we also have the opportunity to hear Panito Iconomou, no longer a boy-alto from the Tolzer Knabenchor, but a mature-sounding and burly bass. Adult female altos and sopranos are used, but their boyish sounding voices make this recording more believable and uniform.

The orchestra is polished and balances well with the voices. Many people realize that the One Voice Per Part approach balances much better with an orchestra. Thanks to the minimal forces, each voice, each line, and therefore more of Bach's intentions, are meticulously heard.

This is clearly a must-have recording.

    4 out of 5 stars Overall, a beautiful performace........2000-06-15

Bach is definetly one of my favorite composers, and I especially like his melancholy works. These are some of the most beautiful and sad pieces I've heard from Bach. All 3 are equally good, but the uncontrolled reverb in the recording never ceases to irritate me. 5 stars for the performance, 4 for the thick reverb.

Jack Rinke is probably the most ridiculously, handsomely talented individual I have ever had the pleasure to see perform. His songs have great depth and his passion for making great music infuses every second of this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music.......2003-12-21

When I popped in this CD I was expecting the usual syrupy piano music. What I got was an incredible mix of compositions. From the wistful yearning beauty in "Time after Time" and "To See You Again" to the depth of emotions laid bare in "The Star that Fell Across my Heart" and "Silent Heart". Not to mention the amazing "Solace". Whether you want a romantic evening, quiet time with a cup of tea, or even just a good cry this CD is what you're looking for.

      5 out of 5 stars Deller forever!.......1999-09-27

The Deller Consort has long been a favorite among lovers of Medieval, Renaissance, and Restoration vocal music, and when it comes to Elizabethan music, no name is more prominent than that of John Dowland, whose "Airs & Partsongs" are now available under the title of Awake Sweet Love [bold] on Vanguard Classics OVC 8112. Here are superlative renditions of 15 tracks of Dowland's vocal output (with a galliard thrown in: you saw two of them danced in the recent film "Elizabeth") sung by the Deller Consort and Alfred Deller himself as soloist. This is not the bawdy, backstreet songs featured on some other recordings but the heightened "art" songs demanded by the court and by the noble houses of the time. The very titles say it all" "Wilt though, unkind, thus leave m?" "In darkness let me dwell," "Flow my tears," and so on. Beautiful as music, fascinating as a look into the past.

Although Henry Purcell usually is cited as the greatest master of English text-setting, such judgments ignore the genius of John Dowland, whose music not only is totally accordant with its texts, but whose melodies are invariably memorable and eminently singable. This recording offers a variety of vocal works, most for mixed voices, accompanied by Anthony Rooley's well-tuned and tastefully realized lute figures. Of the program's 18 songs, 11 are by Dowland; the rest are by several contemporaries--Morley, Tomkins, and Weelkes--who both encouraged and were influenced by Dowland's unique musical persona, a remarkable combination of "distraught melancholy" and flawless melodic and harmonic instincts. Familiar and beloved tunes are here, including "Come again!" and "Sleep wayward thoughts." But just as compelling are Tomkins's "Weep no more, thou sorry boy" and Claudin de Sermisy's "Las, je m'y plains." The four voices--some of England's finest early-music singers--are so distinct that rather than a carefully blended ensemble, we hear each individual voice clearly defined. It's an interesting effect that works well and adds immeasurably to the color and mood of the music. --David Vernier

four voices: evelyn tubb - soprano, lucy ballard - alto, andrew king - tenor, and simon grant - bass. for those of you who think that the human voice is about as pretty a musical instrument that's ever been invented, this is a disc for you. divine stuff. director, anthony rooley adds some nice lute, too. don't miss it.
