Kamelot's latest power metal offering seems unlikely to win the collective the kind of major attention its sought for more than a decade now. 4 out of 5 stars Very good follow-up album..........2007-07-11

...To Karma, more than Epica or the Black Halo. The songs are a little shorter, and in my opinion, they stand apart from each other just as well as, if not better than, they do together on the album. The Human Stain in particular is a nice surprise in the middle of the album. In fact, my only complaint is that the bonus track, The Pendulous Fall, though very catchy, sounds rushed- it almost sounds like they did it in one take and whatever post effects were on, they went with. It'd be nice to see them follow up on the next album with a reworked version, maybe longer by 30 seconds or a minute. Other than that, an outstanding album.

THE BAND: Roy Khan (vocals), Thomas Youngblood (guitars), Glenn Barry (bass), Oliver Palotai (keyboards), Casey Grillo (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (2007) 12 tracks clocking in at approximately 48 minutes. Included with the disc is an 18-page booklet containing song titles/credits, song lyrics, band photos, and thank you's. Recorded at Gate Studios (Wolfsberg, Germany). All songs written by Kamelot. * There is a limited edition package available - containing the music disc as well as a bonus DVD (which is short at about 10 minutes... containing the video of the title track, as well as the making of the video... each in the 4-5 minute range). Label - SPV/Steamhammer.

COMMENTS: If you're a fan of Kamelot, as well as the power/symphonic/progressive genre, then without a doubt you'll need to add "Ghost Opera" to your collection. Khan's voice gets stronger as both he and the band mature. His ability to sing, his harmony and delivery of words, his emotion (both high and low) are truly a gift. Youngblood's guitar (rhythm sections and solos) are quick when they need to be, crisp and befitting. Barry is steady on bass and Grillo is a master on the double bass drum kit... exciting, but not overly flashy. THE GOOD: From the beautiful one minute violin intro "Solitaire" to the brilliant final cut ("The Pendulous Fall") there is no filler. "Ghost Opera" is an album you can listen to again and again without skipping tracks. Keyboardist Oliver Palotai is a nice addition. Kamelot has used keyboards on previous albums, but they've only been guest artists. Palotai's contributions are welcomed. Quietly in the background and never overbearing... in my opinion, the way keyboards should be in most forms of metal. Musicianship is professional, tight, amazing. The orchestra is woven nicely into various songs. Dare I say Kamelot is becoming less focused on speed and crunchy riffs, as they at giving the listener a full musical journey of ups and downs. I keep asking myself - how will Kamelot out-perform their previous album... and they keep doing it. I loved "The Black Halo" (2005) and thought it perhaps their finest in their catalog... until now. Khan's vocals soar once again. Sound production is once again stellar (crisp highs and thundering bass lines). Favorite songs include the mid-tempo "Rule The World"; the exciting title track of a dream gone bad with the opera as a backdrop; the chugging "Human Stain" featuring some great rhythm guitar, a very emotional Khan, and the piano sliding in at the right times; and perhaps the best power ballad on the album (featuring guest singer Amanda Sommerville sharing the vocals with Khan). THE NOT SO GOOD: The melodies are top notch... and taking anything away from the music would be criminal. A minor flaw with the album is the print in the liner notes... the song lyrics are printed in extremely small script over illustrations - making them tough to read. My eye-sight is 20/20 and I have to squint to make out all the words. The only other small detail I could think of is the shortness of the disc (recent albums ranging from 52-60 minutes in length) and the absence of an 'epic' song over 8 minutes. Not since 1999 ("The Fourth Legacy") has the longest song been in the 5 minute range... "Love You To Death" is the longest track on the disc here clocking in at 5:13 minutes. It doesn't have to be a "Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner" epic, but I think it would break that commercial prototype feel to this album as a whole. OVERALL: Brilliant album. Incredible melodies. Flawless musicianship. Distinct vocals once again are the trademark of Kamelot. My pick for '07 power metal album of the year (5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars As good as Black Halo but different.......2007-07-07

This is probably the most different Kamelot album to date (at least post Khan, which is all I have), but do not be alarmed. The album is excellent. More melodic than the Black Halo, but it works great just the same. Make sure to get the album with the bonus track Pendulous Fall; it's one of the best songs on the album. For those that like Symphony X and were dissapointed with the direction they took on Paradise Lost, do not be alarmed as this is less severe of a change and it is excellent nonetheless.

After their last album, The Black Halo, I was really worried about what Kamelot was going to put out. How could they follow up such a perfect album? While TBH seemed to refine and polish their previous work, Epica, Ghost Opera goes to different places. It captures more operatic and melodic themes and successfuly intertwines them with Kamelot's unique metal sound. It really is quite amazing. If you've listened to Kamelot's previous releases and enjoyed them, do yourself a favour and get Ghost Opera.

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz

I never worry when I buy a Tab Benoit CD because his material is consistently good and his style doesn't change much over time. He is a superb rhythm guitarist and songwriter and a great live performer. His Louisiana style of blues is on display again with Power of the Pontchartrain. Besides the title cut, my favorite tune is Sac-Au-Lait Fishing, which makes you want to get up and dance. I also like One Foot in the Bayou. All in all, a great CD if you like a New Orleans style blues band.

Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)

this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

Okay, so, if we were in a western, I wouldn't exactly be quick on the draw, but personally, I like getting to things in my own sweet time.
Six years (?) after the fact, the SpiritWorld is graced with this FANTASTIC cd-of 19 tracks, thank you very much-GET IT NOW!!
I was only familiar with the high inducing 'Falling For The First Time' track that's on the Malcolm in the Middle soundtrack, and only vaguely familiar with a few of the others, so I come to this as a newbie and I LOVE IT!!
Their quirky loquacious lyrics are funny, smart, smiley, honest and paranoid, the music is played with heart, it's beautiful and even the slower tracks you can snap to. A couple of the tracks are live versions which makes a nice change to the polished studio feel and it's sweet because you can hear the fans singing along in the background.
I can honestly say there's not a Homer's favorite brand of beer track on here; they're all FABOO, and some that are the faboo-est include the aforementioned Falling..., If I Had $1000000 and the spectacular Pinch Me.
I'd like to buy a doll house, use a shrinkomatic on these guys and have them play for me every time I opened the door. Or we could all just live together. I am so getting their entire back catalog and all their new and future ones, which, considering I'm more of a soundtracks girl, is saying a lot.
Lyrics aren't included in the booklet, but you do get a funny little story behind each song, and besides, they sing clearly enough, and you won't be able to stop playing it either, so you'll pick up on the words.
Bottom line: I HIGHLY recommend this, especially if you have a red cadillac and are going for a road-trip across America. Even just in your head. It's like pure musical sunshine.

I purchased this album after hearing only "One Week" and "If I had 1000000 dollars" from the radio. The two give you a taste of the wacky and zany streak that touches several of their songs, including the irreverant "Be My Yoko Ono." But they show a softer and more reflective side with tracks like "Call and Answer" as well. The variety of tracks is impresive.

As a rule, "best of" compilations tend to be littered with bad songs, but BNL really nailed it with this fantastic collection of songs. If you've heard and enjoyed any of their music, you owe it to yourself to check this one out!

BNL is a fantastic band. You would be cheating yourself if you did not listen to the albums these guys put out. High-quality and consistent, I can always count on them to deliver. This album is typical of that style. One of the other reviewers reminded everyone not to try to rank them with the Beatles. I can tell you these guys rank well with the Beatles at this point. You can bring your kids to one of their concerts without worry, too. Not too shabby!

If the new single is an indication of what to expect from the new album, then this will probably be the best since 'Wicked'. The problem with this disk lies in the re-recorded material. When judged on his own merits, Ripper has a great voice, and he shows it off on the first track. However, the 'Something Wicked' trilogy can't be listened to without comparing it directly to Barlow's version, and in this context, the Ripper just can't win. The original was nothing short of amazing, and could hardly be improved upon, Barlow's voice thick and powerful. In comparison, Ripper sounds hollow and weak. It's not a fair comparison to make, because the two singers have completely different styles, but it's a comparison that's impossible not to make when Ripper sings Matt's songs.
If Iced Earth and its fans can manage to look forward to the future instead of looking back at what was, then there is reason to be optimistic. This single will serve as a good primer for the full-length.

I don't hate Tim Owens. I loved "The Glorious Burden", almost as a different Iced Earth than the ones previously. I love Tim Owens' voice for Iced Earth. I loved Matt Barlow's voice for Iced Earth.


This is only four songs on a single, and only one of them is new. The new song "Ten Thousand Strong" is great. It bears traces of old Iced Earth without being the same old crap or repetitive.


Why do I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" for the title then? The other three tracks.

The other three tracks are not re-recordings, but new versions of the "Something Wicked..." trilogy at the end of "Something Wicked This Way Comes", "Prophecy", "Birth of the Wicked", and "The Coming Curse"

I don't mind having Tim Owens sing over songs that were originally done by Matt Barlow. But they completely RE-DID these songs! They sound very little, if anything like the originals. I am sort of a music traditionalist by nature. Cover songs don't appeal to me as much as originals, re-recorded albums are never better than originals unless it's an unchanged remastering.


It's not just the lack of Barlow's deeper, more husky voice in these songs, it's a completely new guitar, bass, and drum lines used. The rhythms are done at different speeds, the moods are changed. Where once "Prophecy" was a darkly moody, brooding song, it's now something resembling generic "demonic" metal.


I look forward to the new Iced Earth album. I love Iced Earth, and if Schaffer continues to get better with age like his previous albums, I will love it. What I do NOT like is the "rewriting of history" so to speak, the re-writing of these three classic songs of the "Wicked" trilogy. Please... if you don't want Barlow's voice on them, just record Owens over the song as it was! Don't totally rewrite the rhthyms, tempos, moods, etc! It ruins it for traditionalists who have stuck with IE through the ages.

I am going to be brief. "Something Wicked" was my first Iced Earth album, and the original trilogy sent chills down my spine when I listened to it. Iced Earth have changed the trilogy.

First off, the trilogy sounds more produced than ever. Some parts sound really cool and dark, but in general the song just sounds more computerized and polished than the original's. One good thing, however, is the ethnic addition. The song sounds very middle eastern now, which it sort of lacked before. Anyway, I'll take the original version any day. But this version is still pretty good. Makes for a good recap before the new album comes out, but like I said it just sounds too computerized and polished. Also, I like Owens, but he can't match this song which was written with Barlow in mind.

"10,000 Strong" is unremarkable. It's just a single, so I can't complain to much, but it doesn't feel as heavy as it should be. I blame this on the mix and the production.

Something Wicked was the first IE album I had bought. The trilogy in that album is the best thing the band has done next to Dante's Inferno. About the time I had gotten into the band, John Schaffer had mentioned his intent do make a whole album in the theme of Set, the subject of the trilogy. Five or so years later we finally have a taste... I do have some mixed feelings.

Ten Thousand Strong: This first track is the new single, fresh material from the upcoming album, and I have to say that I love it. The riffing is a little similar, perhaps reminiscent of Declaration Day or Attila from Glorious Burden, but this song in my opinion is better than anything from that album. The harmonizing between Ripper and the backround vocals is just amazing and Ripper himself is at the top of his game here. I admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Ripper as the IE vocalist (mostly because I'm still missing Barlow) but here I think he really works. The Glorious Burden felt like an album meant for Barlow but with Ripper filling the void. This track was meant for Ripper, and I can only hope the rest of the album sounds like this. Bravo to Schaffer! 9/10

Prophecy: Here I was not so pleased. As I said, I really love the original trilogy, perhaps a little too much to deal with the changes they've made to it. This song starts out interesting, almost on a more ominous tone, but the great part about the original track is the mellow tone in the first few minutes. Here the mellow tone is replaced with heavier slow tempo guitars, so when the actual main riff starts, it doesn't pack the same punch. And the main riff itself seems palm muted to the point of not even being the same riff anymore. Instead of the loud open chords we used to have, it sounds restrained and totally misses the same feel. Ripper's vocals are pretty good here, though of course he doesn't quite capture Barlowe's haunting tone. This is a fairly dissapointing take on this track. 5/10

Birth of the Wicked: The second track is more of a success. Not much is lost in the rerecording. The guitairs, while not as chunky as in the original, aren't as badly muted as in Prophecy. There are some interesting solos in here too, really impressive ones that I dig. Ripper's vocals work pretty well here as well. It is weird to hear the clocks after the song ends and not before however, but this change is fairly insignificant. Overall, while still not as good as the original, this is a good track. 7/10

The Coming Curse: Like Prophecy, this remake severely dissapoints. I loved the piano intro in the original and they decided to omit that here. It really provided a great buildup to this epic track and jumping right into the main riff doesn't have the same affect. And once again, the main riff is greatly muted and severely loses it's punch. The drums sound way too prominent over the guitars and I keep waiting for the riff to sound more meaty, but this really never happens. Another one of my favorite parts about the original was the backing vocals, the haunting choruses that were put in about halfway through. The vocals are similar, and still fairly haunting, but here it's not as prominent and not as affective. You can really tell it's just a couple of people instead of the overwhelming presense they gave before. This once has some interesting guitar work in the middle, and Ripper's vocals still work on some level, but overall I'm dissapointed. 5/10

The new material is great, and I hope the new album stays that way. The remade trilogy is interesting as an experiment, but by no means should it be a replacement. Perhaps it will work better incorporated into the album, I don't know. Overall, I'm still greatly anticipating this album. While the trilogy does lose something, musically it is still technical and harmonic just as we expect from Schaffer. I would still recommend getting this, just take into consideration what I said about the rerecordings and you might enjoy them. This is still one of my favorite metal bands and recommend them to any fan of old school metal.

I'm sorry....Tim "Ripper" Owens is one of the best things going for Iced Earth. I tried to listen to the Matt Barlow versions of these songs, and I just felt like something was missing. Maybe it was because I discovered Iced Earth with the release of "The Glorious Burden", or maybe it is just because Owens' voice is really great...I don't know. "Ten Thousand Strong" is a great opener to the EP...and is a real excitement-getter for the new album due out this fall. The re-recording of elements from the "Something Wiched This Way Comes" album is absolutely stunning, and my CD player in the car has started spewing smoke from the many times I have played this CD over and over again (just kidding...but I have played it quite a lot!). This is an excellent EP and I can't wait to hear the full-on album later this year.

Been a fan of the band Concrete Blonde and I've always checked out
their music over the years. I found this on Amazon and went to her website
to listen to the complete tracks and I've been really surprised at just
how amazing this collection is. The sound, vocals, writing all have
an edge you don't hear anymore so it stands out. Its different than
the Concrete Blonde days but you can't deny its got some great melodies
and off the wall vocal treaments and wide open raw lyrics. It rocks hard
in places and the acoustic guitar weaves its way around some great grooves. This is one of the best offerings this year so far and it would
be nice to see Johnette and these songs out on the road. so many favorites
but I do love the songs "My Diane", and the Coldplay cover "The Scientist",
"Amazing", the first single, & "Crazy Tonight", "Everthing for everyone".

What an array of wonderfully crafted songs. Johnette's songwriting is among the best in rock history--they are all different and interesting, and often overwhelmingly powerful. Easily the best rock singer still alive and performing--and better than ever. So underrated . . . If being a great musician is about expressing human emotions with all their breadth and profundity, and I think it is, the best I have ever seen live are Johnette Napolitano and Jerry Garcia. Will Crewdson clearly had a fine influence on one of the truly interesting musical artists of our time. There's something about the REAL musicians--most of them for me are older than me--but they just GLOW or something . . .

I was very disapointed with the sound and the voices singing on this cd. I ordered it because I heard the song I Can Only Imagine and it was wonderful, however thie singing on this cd seems to be out of tone, sounds like amatures singing and I hate it. I do not like the entire cd. how sad as I spent good money thinking I was getting a quility of good singers.

While I agree that there are some key tracks missing, this is still a good single-CD overview of an incredibly versatile and talented band. The sound quality is outstanding. It's an interesting mix of rockers and ballads that demonstrates the range and musicianship of the group. While it would take two CDs to do justice to a band with as much great material as Badfinger, this CD is a good place to start.

The good thing about this album is that it presents material from both principal parts of Badfinger's career (the Apple and the Warner period) and thereby provides the listener with a more complete picture of this great but tragically unfortunate band than previous compilations. A minor weakness is that the selection is a bit unbalanced, including some rather weak tracks from the early years and lacking a number of much better songs from Badfinger's late production. Anyway, this is the most comprehensive Badfinger compilation so far and the digital remastering adds to the pleasure of listening to one of the best Beatles successors and one of the first - if not THE first - power pop bands.

I grew up listening to Badfinger and I loved their sound. Since two of the original members are no longer with us, there is little chance of seeing the remaining members on stage. Thus I have to do with what is recorded which is simply amazing. From the mournful sounds of Without You to the teasing of Come and Get It, this CD is, in a word, awesome. It puts together all the hits and some of their lesserknown works together. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Some say Badfinger is a bit of everything. Bit of Beatles, bit of Paul McCartney. All true, but they add a bit of their own to it which makes them very good to listen to.
They've written most of their songs themselves, with succes (so do think Nilsson and Maria Carey among others anyway!).
I bought the book as well (Without you, the tragic story of Badfinger). If only everthing had run just a little bit smoother they would have been one of worlds most succesfull bands.

Pantera has released a few albums before Vulgar, but this one is when they first started to take off. "Walk" and "F**king Hostile" are my favorites, and love each other song almost equally.

This is hands down one of the best metal albums ever conceived. And to be one of the heaviest albums on the billboard charts is amazing. This was better than all the radio alternative rock, and was such a milestone in a world that wasn't over-crowded with insignificant MySpace bands. Til this day, I can't imagine any bands making better, and more impressionable music than Pantera or Slayer.
Every single riff on this album is memorable -- Neither too refined nor too dissonant to be hooked by. The tempo gets your heart racing without intaking in sort of uppers. Dimebag Darrell's guitar leads are on the prodigy level of those best guitarists who have ever lived. He both knew how to shred, and write really creative and rocking music. Phil Anselmo's lyrics may be raw and often juvenile, but his aggression and passion is totally raw and genuine. Every time he pushes a guttural scream, you can feel his anguish escaping. Vinnie Paul is a master of solid drumming with the perfect use of double-bass without overdoing it. All of Rex's bass lines are bluesy solid and compliment all the solos.
The production on this record is razor-sharp and huge sounding. Both tight sub-tones, and crisp distinguishable highs. A pristine sound that seems to have been lost with todays' home Pro-Tools studios and infatuation with lofi Indie rock. The drums are very attacky but unlike with usual triggers, you can hear the resonant decay. The guitar sound is like that of being crushed by a brick wall. Unlike todays' recordings with background guitar, and overly loud vocals, the mix is extremely well-blended. At nearly an hour, this is truly a full length, with never a dull moment. Not one song sounds exactly like the next, yet they all sound like they belong on the same record.
Highlight tracks are the intro "Mouth For War" which starts with a hard-hitting groove, and ending with a fast-paced thrash outro, transitioning into "A New Level" which rings in with a truly heavy beat that makes you want to stomp your feet into the earth and punch through cinder blocks. "Walk" is one of the simplest songs, yet is heavy and captivating in such a way that it never feels dull or stale. "F***in' Hostile" is a short and to-the-point Thrash Metal hymn that just exudes shredding and anger, with a totally flaming solo. "Hollow" begins with acoustic guitar topped with a sweet harmony. The first half of the song entails clean singing. The song is beautiful without ever sounding soft for like a ballad, and the song transitions into an ultra-heavy finish to close the album. My absolute favorite track on the album (and one of my favorite Pantera songs) is the often overlooked "Rise". It instantly begins with relentless thrash with a Mouth For War groove verse. The solo clocks in at nearly a minute, and is one of Dimebag's raddest solos of all time, double layered in part like something Tony Iommi would do, with no rhythm guitar to fill in the void. The solo is so quick and precise, that you never need background distortion to fill it. The walking bass line does the trick.
There isn't an angle on this album that isn't nailed down (with the exception of ballads, which are totally unnecessary to complete a record).
In conclusion, it is rare these days to hear an album that never tires over the years; where the music is strong enough to actually cause your body to release endorphins and raise your heart rate. Vulgar Display of Power is a pinnacle in heavy metal music that is completely original, and has inspired thousands of bands thereafter. I doubt this album will ever be topped.

I have no doubt that Vulgar Display of Power is the best Pantera's album, and I had the chance, in 1993, when they came to Brazil, to be sure that these four guys from Texas are the best musicians of the world.
Pantera is the most important band in underground scenarium. Unfortunately, the band splited-up in 2003, but its compilations will always show how excellent is its work.

Flawless, fierce, insane. Words alone cannot describe this. Fifteen years later, this album continues to deliver like few others can. It's just one of those rare finds. Those who understand, know. Those who don't, too bad. R.I.P. Dimebag.
