Customer Reviews:
Great music.......2007-04-05
The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.
Not just pipes.......2007-02-12
I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.
Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03
I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.
A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11
I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.
It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.
This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.
Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09
Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.
The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

If you liked easy listening FM radio and really miss it, this collection is for you. It is all of the things you remember hearing.
For Those Who Love Easy Listening.......2007-05-13
Along with Billy Vaughn, Percy Faith, Ray Conniff and Mantovani, Kostelanetz was one of biggest names in the 50s and 60s, in the
easy-listening category. He had good taste selecting the musics, and
his sound was "full, luxurious, beautiful".
I suggest, too, Bert Kaempfert, Clebanoff, Hugo Winterhalter, Les Baxter,
Paul Mauriat and Franck Pourcel. This 3-CDs set is very good!
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a find, what a jewel........2004-01-31
When I was a teenager, I loved the Beatles and their song "Yesterday". I also loved the Monkeys. However, I had a side of me that loved Johnnie Mathis' song "The Shadow of Your Smile" and then my all time favorite albums were ones by Andre Kostelanetz. When John Kennedy was assasinated, Andre's albums were there for me. I am Black, which should not be a variable in this review, but I want to encourage those of every race to partake of this Ultimate Collection.
This set definitely covers a lot of ground. Maybe too much........2003-03-08
This is a most welcome comprehensive collection of Kostelanetz recordings covering his Columbia records career that spanned decades. It contains plenty of great examples of both his classical and pop recordings. His mastery of arrangement certainly had no equal in the 50s and 60s and there's lots and lots of proof of this spread over these discs. The first two discs are completely flawless. Practically every performance is five star quality. The first several tracks of the third disc continue the excellence but about a third of the way into this disc (and into Kostelanetz's 70s recordings) the arrangements start to sound more and more dated. There's something about the great orchestral masters adopting the styles of 1970s pop music that just doesn't hold up well today. I guess no one knew at the time that the 50s and 60s material would sound so much better so many years down the line so perhaps, no one is to blame. But I would rather have had more classical works or more 60s pop and left the 70s tracks to gather dust in the vault. Three essential tracks that are missing: "Somewhere My Love", "Bluesette" and Gershwin's "Promenade". Other than that, a really excellent (and beautifully remastered) collection.

CD and DVD -- zamechatel'niye!.......2005-10-21
The local PBS channel featured Helmut Lotti's "From Russia With Love" for the recent pledge drive. They got my support! And I got this wonderful CD and equally wonderful DVD. Helmut Lotti has a superb voice and he sings these Russian songs with such passion! Remarkably, he does not speak Russian, but learned the lyrics phonetically. Here are some of my favorite folk songs: Polyushko polye, Cherniye ochi, Kalinka. And some popular Russian songs which made it to the American hit parade: Dorogoy dlinnoyu ("Those Were the Days, My Friend") and the English language rendition of "Dream Away" ("A Stranger in Paradise"). Helmut gives a sweet, personal touch to movie themes "From Russia With Love" and "Lara's Theme" and a poignant "Far East of the Sun." These latter are sung in English. The final stanza of "Far East," a song from the Siberian gulag, could bring tears to your eyes! The finale is the Russian National Anthem. This is one of the most beautiful and singable of all anthems. The pleasing music has recently been given new lyrics by its original composer. Helmut sings the updated version accompanied by the Red Army Ensemble. My only criticism of the CD: lyrics should have been provided for nonRussian speakers. But I'm certain a web-search could easily locate lyrics and translations. The DVD features the same wonderful songs, with videos of Russian villagers and Cossacks in traditional costume. Helmut's trip through Russia on the TransSiberia Railroad provides the backdrop to the musical DVD. Through his eyes you see the splendor of this awesome, huge country. I recommend watching the DVD to get a feel for the artist's own appreciation of Russia. You'll feel the love each time you listen to the CD!

Simply Excellent!!.......2007-01-10
Very uptempo offering from Simply Red, especially the first two tracks: "Spirit of Life", and "Ain't That Alot of Love". Followed by one of the most powerful metaphors regarding drug addiction that I've ever heard in "The Sky is a Gypsy". As well, Mick Hucknall can't resist adding a bit of his transendental theology in a beautiful piece regarding the Universe as God, something he seemed to first elucidate on in the 1997 release Life. Thankfully, he hasn't lost his sense of social justice as is evident in a powerful piece titled "Man Made the Gun." All in all yet another substantial selection of the lyrical - melodic genius that we have come to expect from Simply Red.
Not his best, but it is great........2005-12-31
A few weak songs, but some real heavies in there like "Thank You". I rate this one as the 4th best of Red's stuff. Life, Stars, Blue, then this one. I know that a lot of purests will call me names because they like the earlier stuff, but I feel they fall that way. Buy this one - can't go wrong.
Brilliant Simply Red.......2004-11-28
My wife and I love this album. A great mix of songs with lovely singing.
A great late night or driving Album
Superb effort!
Dissapointing.......2003-01-13
My first contact into SR's music was with "Stars". It was a great album, and i loved the fact they composed real great R&B songs without giving up too much to electronica and giving some room for experimentation. Though i basically don't know their older albums, SR was a band worth listening and following. That is why i bought "Russian Winter"... and what a dissapointment.
The cd is basically plain, dull and with no feeling. Joyness is not Hucknall's business, and the songs sound fake, with no feeling, or with emotions being stretched. Do not buy it. You won't regret it.
LOVE AND THE RUSSIAN WINTER..........2002-08-16
THIS IS THE WORST C.D. I HAD EVER BOUGHT. HARD TO BELIEVE IT IS SIMPLY RED. MICK? WHAT HAPPENED? BLASE' ....

As Good as "Restless & Wild" and "Balls to the Wall".......2006-09-27
Accept was a German metal band that sounded like a cross between Judas Priest and AC/DC with a troll as lead singer who sounded like an over-the-top mesh of Bon Scott and Brian Johnson.
Accept released ten studio albums during their career; most cite "Restless & Wild" (1983) and "Balls to the Wall" (1984) as their best recordings. This is true but I feel 1986's "Russian Roulette" stands on a par with these two earlier releases.
Here's a run down of the songs on "Russian Roulette:"
1.) T.V. WAR (3/5 Stars): This is an energetic and fun metal rocker reminiscent of "Fast as a Shark" but not quite as good.
2.) MONSTERMAN (5/5 Stars): "Monsterman" is brief at a mere 3:24, but it's catchy as heck. The bridge is melodically potent and the chorus is uniquely inspired. You'll never hear anything else like it. Who knows what the lyrics are about, who cares?
3.) RUSSIAN ROULETTE (4/5 Stars): This titular song eerily starts off with a militaristic drone and riff before kicking into a mid-paced slice of 80's non-hair-band metal. In light of the chorus lyrics, one wonders why they didn't call the song "Wargames."
4.) IT'S HARD TO FIND A WAY (4.5/5 Stars): This is a catchy pop rocker with an incredibly hook-laden chorus. It should have been a hit on the radio. Some cried "Sell out!" but, come on, it's just ONE song.
5.) AIMING HIGH (3/5 Stars): This isn't a bad piece of filler between the better songs.
6.) HEAVEN IS HELL (5/5 Stars): This is the second masterpiece of the album. It's structure is very reminiscent of "Balls to the Wall," although it doesn't sound like that song. The lyrics are an intriguing commentary on religion and religious people with the conclusion that we experience (or make our own) heaven or hell during our life on this earth. I strongly agree with some of their points and disagree with others but, regardless, the lyrics are not presented in an offensive way. Here's one stanza that I agree with:
I'm sure we all know them
Those perverts, they're everywhere
Mmh, we're talking straight about facts
You know deep inside what's right or wrong
And the world stinks, and the paradise is now a sewer
And they sell sh*t for gold
And you have to take what you've got
As you can see the words are honest, overt, slightly ambiguous and completely brilliant all at the same time.
7.) ANOTHER SECOND TO BE (3/5 Stars): Another brief enjoyable ditty.
8.) WALKING IN THE SHADOW (4/5 Stars): Emotionally potent and intriguing tune that deals with a person struggling to live on in face of the 58,000 that died during the Vietnam conflict. Whether the guilt is over one combat victim or all 58,000 is a mite unclear.
9.) MAN ENOUGH TO CRY (4.5/5 Stars): Great short piece! The title somewhat reveals the mature subject matter, but the lyrics maintain an esoteric element.
10.) STAND TIGHT (5/5 Stars): This is a creative and aggressive number with a melodic bridge and ultra-catchy chorus with cool backgound vocals. It has militaristic vibe and is the third masterpiece of the album.
Some have criticized that Accept were trying to go pop rock on this album but nothing could be further from the truth. "Russian Roulette" features the same diverse song-writing of both "Restless & Wild" and "Balls to the Wall." Yeah, one or two songs would've fit well on the radio, so what?
One thing this CD proves is that Accept had perhaps the best background vocals in all of metal at the time and even to this day (!).
"Russian Roulette" is quite a bit better than the good-but-not-great "Metal Heart," which was released in 1985. The song-writing on "Metal Heart" just wasn't as good, plus Udo (the singer) went overkill with his irritating screaming, which no doubt turned off potential life-long fans. Hence, when "Russian Roulette" was released the next year not many took notice. They should have.
My five favorite Accept albums are as follows:
"Restless & Wild," "Balls to the Wall" and "Russian Roulette"
"Predator" (1996) -- their last studio album, inexplicably underrated.
"Metal Heart"
Check 'em all out.
Accept's the best release!!!!.......2005-05-09
Frankly, the best of the rest. I am longing for Accept's past especially Metal Heart and Russian Roulette. This is military strong CD!!!
Mature Work by the Masters.......2005-04-17
I love this album, it brings back many memories of my turbulent youth!
"Killed in action".......2005-04-15
Russian Roulette (1986) was Accept's sixth album. It supposedly marked a move toward a more aggressive sound after the attempt at a more mainstream album in 1985's Metal Heart (produced by Dieter Dirks who had also produced fellow German band the Scorpions). It also was the last Accept album with vocalist Udo Dirkschneider of the 1980s. The screeching little metal maniac would leave to start his own band U.D.O. Accept is one of my favorite metal bands, but Roulette does not come close to their previous masterpieces Restless and Wild & Balls to the Wall and is a big drop from the excellent Metal Heart.
Although Russian Roulette is a disappointment, it is still a decent 3-star album. Half the tracks are excellent. The rest are really bad which surprised me when I first heard it because Accept's previous 3 albums are very solid. First the good stuff: The cover artwork is awesome. I love Cold War imagery. I have a promotional poster featuring this cover and the slogan "Face the Music. Dare to Play Russian Roulette." on my wall as I am typing this. Though Udo and the gang may not have been the most attractive metal gods in the world, their photo definitely makes for a more appealing album cover than Balls to the Wall. Now the best of the music: "T.V. War" is an excellent opening track. It is typical blistering, fast metal fans expect of Accept and works well with the cover imagery. The title track and "Heaven and Hell" have that "Balls to the Wall" intensity. I like the lyrics to these as well. From "T.V. War": "enemy missiles have penetrated our airspace. Impact is estimated in a matter of minutes. Good evening!" "Another Second to Be" is a fast and furious track. The last song "Stand Tight" has an anthem quality to it. Just these tracks on an EP would be 5-star.
But, this album offers more...unfortunately. While Metal Heart was supposed to give Accept a more commercial sound, I think Roulette puts forth more of an attempt at a mainstream sound and it turns into a sappy mess. There is no "Screaming for a Love Bite" here but there is "It's Hard to Find a Way." The opening sounds like "Hysteria" by Def Leppard. The rest of the song has a hair band quality (ugh!). The chanting chorus on "Aiming High" is just bad. "Monsterman" and "Man Enough to Cry" are difficult to listen to. They are just junk. I recommend Roulette only to the serious 1980s metal completest (and fans of Accept, of course). Selective 1980s metal collectors should probably skip this one and just get Restless and Wild, Balls to the Wall and, maybe, Metal Heart.
Great!!!.......2004-10-07
Well I guess I should pay my respect to this
awesome album, I own it both on vinyl and CD
and it was my first Accept album, it quickly became
my favourite. So today I returned to it after maybe
5 years and I have to say that it still holds up.
And I just love the gang backing vocals it just sounds great.
So I rate it pretty high maybe nr 1...hm well I don't know.. it's one of their finest, in my mind anyway!!

Lockhart's Debut Recording with the Boston Pops.......2004-08-13
RUNNING WILD is collection of Glenn Miller favorites and is Keith Lockhart's debut recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The musical quality is good. While it does not demonstrate the style that Lockhart would later develop with the orchestra, it certainly offers glimpses of what is to come. Perhaps the recording's strongest tracks are the musical numbers with guests: John Pizzarelli and the King Singers, especially the album's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". One of Lockhart's greatest strengths is selecting guests to accompany the orchestra and this album is a foretaste of what is later to come, particularly on the Celtic and Mexican collections released later in Lockhart's tenure. While the album is good, and Lockhart seems to enjoy conducting these Big Band pieces, his rendition of "In the Mood" is missing something, which is surprising since this work is such a staple at Pops concerts, but even a not quiet the best rendition of any piece by the Boston Pops is still far better than much of what is available.
"Runnin' Wild" will get you "In the Mood" for Big Band tunes.......2003-11-08
When John Williams stepped down as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra after 14 successful seasons, the talented young Keith Lockhart was chosen as his replacement. Looking more like a college freshman than music director of one of America's most famous orchestras, Lockhart has proved to be just as adept and popular as Williams and the late Arthur Fiedler.
1996's Runnin' Wild is a collection of songs made famous by Big Band era orchestra leader Glenn Miller, whose civilian and later Army Air Force bands provided audiences with music to dance to (and love to) before and during World War II. Before his mysterious death in December 1944, Miller's band and featured vocalists gave the world such beloved swing standards as "In The Mood," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "A String of Pearls," and his signature theme, "Moonlight Serenade."
Listen to this album, close your eyes, and the Boston Pops Orchestra transports you back to the 1940s, with young men in uniform dancing with either their wives, sweethearts, or USO girls to the fast-paced "Runnin' Wild"...gently swaying the sweet "A String of Pearls" (featured in the film The Glenn Miller Story)...or sharing that last sweet bit of lovemaking to the slow beat of "Moonlight Serenade."
Of the 16 selections, "Moonlight Serenade" is the one I am most familiar with, having heard it as incidental music or "source" material in so many World War II movies or documentaries. It's slow, gentle, romantic yet sensual, and it's the only "Glenn Miller" song actually written by the bandleader. Originally titled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep," it was a big hit in 1939 and was the theme song for both Miller's and Tex Beneke's bands. The Pops' performance of it captures its air of nostalgia perfectly, and the clarinet solo by Thomas Martin is simply fabulous.
Modern standards singer John Pizzarelli and The King's Singers show their stuff on several tracks, most vividly so in "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," which was another chart-topping hit for Miller in 1941, the year the U.S. entered World War II. Pizzarelli has a way of channeling the great vocalists of the era, with his easy-to-listen voice and flawless delivery. The King's Singers are wonderful backup in other songs, including "Serenade in Blue" and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo."
As a soloist, Pizzarelli shines in the more romantic (and slower) "The Nearness of You," a song that might have been on a serviceman's mind when reading a letter from his wife or girlfriend.
Another sentimental favorite where Pizzarelli performs well is 1940's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," a song introduced in Britain and popularized not only by Glenn Miller but also Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kay.
Several genres also get the Glenn Miller treatment, such as opera (Verdi's "The Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore), vaudeville ("My Blue Heaven") blues ("The St. Louis Blues March") and even Russian traditional songs ("Volga Boatmen").
So if you want to get "In the Mood" and have a good time listening to a fun Boston Pops Orchestra album, Runnin' Wild is definitely worth getting.
Great fun!.......2000-11-02
I bought this CD three days ago and it hasn't left my CD player since. There is nothing like waking up and putting on "In the Mood" to start your day, or listening to "Moonlight Serenade" to end it.
Okay, but lose the cover.......2000-05-31
The Pops are a Boston institution. They have been a tradition for many and familiar to most. I have been to the Pops probably as often as to Fenway Park. I like both and find great comfort in each.
What happens with much of what the Pops attempt here is goofy. The cover art, is I presume, similar to the old Arthur Fiedler covers where he wore a funny coat or hat and tried to look less symphonic and more silly. Give it up.
The strength of the Pops is the traditional, predictable format and arrangements that are as easy to identify as your own child. That too is the unfortunate part of the Pops. There needs to be a little something new here.
So if you enjoy the traditional string arrangements and percussion of the Pops this will not disappoint you. If you are trying to get a youngster excited about this music you might more easily find an elevator and listen to the musak.
Classical arrangements, novelty music and patriotic songs are the best the Pops can provide. The swing music just doesn't do it for me.
Runnin' wild? Maybe with a walker.
Swing at its best!.......2000-01-08
I'll tell you a little story about this CD from Keith Lockhart. I'm a baby-boomer brought up on swing and am constantly looking for quality big band recordings. I bought this album several years ago when it was first released and I loved it. Whenever I played it at home, my 18 y/o daughter gave me the business about my "old fogey" music. One day, however, I happened to come home unexpectedly and there she was in the family room with "String of Pearls" at nearly full volume. I bought her the album when she went to college and she says that she's since converted nearly half the dorm to swing. This is probably the best recording of big band sounds ever. Also look at "Pops Stoppers" which is half big band tunes and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Both are excellent as well.

140 Musicians Meeting...: Creative Thrilling Sparks Fly.......2003-04-07
Shankar's compositions masterfully reveal the beauty encompassing individual elements of the vast and diverse elements collected under Indian music. Lovers of Indian music of all sort can enjoy this cd: example, having listened to many tabla solos/jugalbandis, the brief mukha-vadyam(tabla syllables recited>played) jugalbandi's thrilling complexity, the two players combining in a result unacheivable through improvised recitations; rhythm, vocal, folk songs combine under a classical backdrop, the juxtaposition/blending of the instruments is amazing, be it when an angelic indian women singing in shanti-mantra is followed up by the hallowing glory of the Russian chorus, or the indian flute, sitar, violin, santoor, sarangi, shehnai playing shankar's involved peices. The texture is very rich. Bahu-rang: camel riding folk musicians will make you bust out dancing in the middle of the desert/or Listen to the moment in bahu-rang when a women sings a hindi love song to you, her style, listen to it, her style is indescribable- so tender/sensitive/Raw like a lonesome virgin waiting to be made love to - That moment should be enough for your 15 bucks :)
Extremely moving.......2003-02-24
This is the single cd that opened my ears to world music. This is an outstanding musical meeting of two cultures with a master at the lead. People familiar with Ravi Shankar know he is an absolute virtuoso sitarist, but this cd shows how amazing his composing skills are as well. All of the performers on this cd are amazing, and the compositions cover every emotion. Although I've bought other Shankar cd's, this one remains my favorite.
Curried Caviar, anyone?.......2001-01-16
This typically contrived, multi-cultural Shankar experiment takes a while to get cranked up, but once it does, you won't know whether to dance on the seat of your pants or hip hop with Krishna.
Ravi joins his own ensemble to the Russian Folk Ensemble, the Government Chorus of Ministry of Culture of USSR, & the chamber orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic. He composed all the music. The Moscow Philharmonic ensemble doesn't fare too swell with the three ragas, but it's thrilling to hear the Government Chorus singing along with Ravi's crack percussion unit. & Ravi does play it straight a few times. The 25 minute, five movement closer, Bahu-Rang, based on Raga Mishra Pilu, rises to an ecstatic mix of voices, balaikas, sitar & South Asian riddems. Everyone seems to be having a great time. Curried cavier, anyone?

this is one on my must own list.......1999-12-16
This cd takes me on a journey into India, I love this cd. I have had it since it came out years ago, it is played most often on my cd player. By the way I generally listen to alternative rock, but this is an amazing peice of art.
Was this album recorded by an earthling?.......1999-04-16
I cannot believe my ears. This album is amazing! The combination of Indian and Russian music was something I never even thought of.This album is now the CD that has been played the most in my player.I HIGHLY recommend this album to anyone with a need to explore the unknown.

Vitas is Amazing.......2007-03-18
I can't say it any better than previous reviewers, so I will add only that this singer/actor/composer has totally blown me away with his talent. I have all his albums and can't stop listening. His style is ever changing and always fascinating! If you have not watched him perform, search for his videos on the internet. He is a joy to behold!
Brilliant!.......2006-12-13
Really good stuff. Vitas has a unique style and voice and it's great fun to listen to him playing and experimenting. He's a sopranist, so the first thing anyone notices is his incredible range and Opera #1 is a great showcase for it. But he's not a one-trick pony and on more traditional songs he knows when to sing it straight and when to let loose.
You can check out the tracks at his official site to get an idea. My personal favorites are Opera 1 and 2, Dreams and 7th Element but frankly there isn't a dud on the disk-although Prelude isn't really a song.
Philosophy of Miracle---Rebirth of Orpheus.......2006-01-12
The vocal genius, Vitas has swept the whole Russia with his breathtaking multi-octaves and dazzling performance. He was talent-searched in his 19 by the famous producer, Sergey Nikolaevich Pudovkin in an obscure small theatre in Odessa, Ukraine, thanks to an intersection of endowment and luck.
This album is the first showcase of the young singer's distinctive, heart-tugging voice developed far beyond physical limitations: perfectly desperate soprano notes of operatic arias highlighted in "Opera 1" and "Opera 2", incredible ventriloquist skill displayed in "Karlson" and "Old Gramophone", and "Prelude", which contains vivid imitation on "Flight of the Bumble Bee" by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, mystic takings of Middle East and Indian styled "The Seventh Element" and "The Birthday of My Death", as well as exquisite coloratura gymnastics in "Dreams" and "Soul".
Aside from his overwhelming capability over various types of music including pop, rap, Gothic rock and classic, Vitas takes full credit for composition work.
The singer's debut album is an experimental one with irresistible power, an album presenting Vitas overtaking control over music, a telling hint that Orpheus has returned. If you like edgy yet resonant music you MUST add this CD to your collection.
