3 out of 5 stars nothing else like it.......2006-07-16

I find this a fascinating performance of the Hummel Trumpet Concerto. Basch indeed does not play very well, by the standards of modern virtuosity. In technical terms there is not much to admire, especially in comparison to great players such as Marsalis, Hardenburger, Andre, Schwarz, or Smedvig: Basch's sound is thin and unattractive and his execution is often awkward and uneven. But for all that, the ensemble interplay here is truly masterful. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra do not use a conductor, so this is real chamber playing. There are so many important orchestral lines that come out of the texture here, emphasizing certain subtle details of the score in a way no other reading does; the counterpoint and orchestral dialog have a spontaneous, almost improvisatory conversational character that really put this performance in a class by itself.

This is all less true in the other works, as those scores are far less sophisticated than Hummel's ingenious concerto (incidentally, this was Hummel's debut piece at Esterhaza when he formally succeeded Haydn there in 1803). But even in those lesser works, the chamber playing is brought off skillfully, once again setting these readings apart from all others. If you are mostly interested in hearing good trumpet playing this isn't the disc for you, but if you are mostly interested in a good orchestral performance and sophisticated ensemble dialog with the soloist, you really must hear this.

I do not recommend this album. Basch's playing is pinched, inexpressive, and inarticulate. His Hummel recording is scratchy and drained of glory. His playing in the Hertel pieces sounds like that of an oboe, but without any richness of tone.
