Solid performance and great value.......2007-02-15
This set contains almost all Prokofiev's concertos. Contrary to what is advertised as "Complete Concertos", it omits Prokofiev's early work "Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 58". Although a large amount of thematic material is reused in the later piece "Sinfonia Concertante for cello & orchestra in E minor, Op. 125", there are really substantial differences. (Traditionally, when a set is advertised as "complete", it will contains at least all works with Opus numbers.) But really, Op. 58 is not performed in the concert halls these days. (At least, none that I am aware of.) If you are really interested in comparing these 2 works, you may consult, e.g. Chandos recording "The Unknown Prokofiev".
I like the performances here. For each individual piece, there are performances closer to my heart. For example, Richter's Piano Concerto in G and Argerich's Piano Concerto in C., Heifetz's Violin Concerto in g minor, besides those mentioned in other 2 reviews. (By the way, Rostropovich's Sinfonia Concertante is now available in DVD from EMI Classic Archive 15.) However, if you are looking for solid performances at an affordable price, hesitate no more! This set is for you.
Highly recommended.
Great collection and great value.......2006-10-09
This 3-CD set includes all of Prokofiev's concertos in one place. The best part is that it includes Ashkenzy and Previn's perfomances of the piano concertos- generally considered the best on recording.
Bell's perfomance of the violin concertos and quite good, maybe not the best, but Lynn Harell's cello renditions are excellent.
Highly recommended.
No brainer -- buy it!.......2004-08-22
This is a great and inexpensive introduction to the concerti of Sergei Prokofiev. And there's not a boring piece--or performance--in the box. I'm generally not a big Ashkenazy fan these days, but many of his earlier recordings were often very fine, and these are among them. His direct, declamatory way of played works to the advantage of the music here as well. He seizes these works by the horns, and the results are spectacular. Previn and the LSO never sounded better--for those who are familiar mostly with the later Previn, somewhat burned out and sluggishly leading the RPO or LAPO, these recordings will be a revelation. From the mechanical workings of No. 1 to the agitated fury of No. 2 to the quicksilver lithe of No. 3 to the enigma that is No. 5, these are great performances that manage to hit the mark while being very middle-of-the-road. (I don't mean middle-of-the-road in a negative way.) You'll notice I didn't mention No. 4, which has never really worked for me. As far as left-hand concertos go, listen to Ravel's.
The violin concerto is very fine, but it won't displace either Oisktrakh (a tall order, I admit) or, believe it or not, Perlman, with Rozhdestvensky and the BBC Symphony. The two cello concerti are tremendously exciting compositions that deserve to be played a lot more often than they are. Written for Rostrapovich, they are given credible readings by Harrell here, though I wish Rosty's performances were available (other than Op. 132 in an expensive 13-CD box) to show you you're *really* supposed to burn up these works. There aren't a whole lot of other performances of either of them, so you'll have to settle for these.

Album Description
The White Box is Naxos' flagship boxed set series, dedicated to exploring complete areas of a composer's work. All releases in the White Box series are presented in durable and attractive packaging with the discs enclosed in individual sleeves. From the beginning, Naxos has sought to let these masterpieces speak for themselves and in designing these boxes, the music is presented with minimal fuss. Such minimalism does not apply to the generously sized booklets, which offer full essays on each work plus a biography of the composer and artists. The booklets also contain a specially created chronology for this series, which sets events in the composer's own life into a wider musical and overall historical context.
Customer Reviews:
Great price, but out of tune Ukrainian brass.......2006-10-04
I love this collection simply because there's so much music in it. Yet I find that Kuchar struggles to maintain the driving pace, and wrest the fortissimo out of the orchestra, demanded by the more brutal symphonies. Most disturbing to me, though, is the fairly common occurrence of high-profile brass notes, and somewhat less often, woodwinds, that are just out of tune. I realize the 2nd and 3rd symphonies are chromatic, and fairly dissonant, but you can still clearly hear intonation problems. Check out the counterpoint line at 0:17 in Variation I of Symphony No. 2's Theme and Variations, the ending of Symphony No. 3's Allegro agitato - Allegretto, 1:29-1:36 of Symphony No. 5's Andante, or the woodwind intro of Symphony No. 6's Largo.
A Super-Bargain But Variable Performances.......2004-06-05
This set contains not only all the symphonies and all the concerti for piano, for violin, and for cello, it also contains some ballet music (The Prodigal Son, for instance, which is rarely recorded), the Waltz Suite (delectable music rarely heard in the concert hall), and the almost-never-heard Unaccompanied Violin Sonata, among other tidbits, all on 9 fully-packed CDs.
Taking them category by category and with some attention to individual performances, I would start by saying that the five piano concerti, as well-played as they are here, are simply swamped by Vladimir Ashkenazy's set with André. Further, the Naxos performances (with the excellent Korean pianist, Kun Woo Paik, with Antoni Wit and the Polish Radio Symphony) are in somewhat glassy sound; their more recent provenance does not give them improved sound over the Ashkenazy set. I did like the verve of the D Flat Concerto (No. 1) in particular, however.
The Violin Concertos fare better, both in terms of performance and particularly in sonics. Tedi Papavrami is a young Albanian violinst, erstwhile pupil of Pierre Amoyal. The first thing to say is that he does not seem be copying any of his violinistic predecessors in these concerti. Notice in particular how well he projects the top line in the double-stop passages and his affinity for the lyrical aspects of the music. He has technique to spare, generally spot-on intonation, and real musical feeling. The only competition on a single disc is that of Gil Shaham who plays these concerti with real flair. Neither of them plays the Second Concerto with the laser-like intensity of Heifetz, however. And in the First there is the still-paramount Oistrakh. Still, these are creditable performances and I'm glad I have them. The Solo Violin Sonata is given a nicely judged performance and has very little competition on CD.
The Cello Concerto is given in the revised version, now more commonly called the Symphony-Concerto, Op. 125; Prokofiev had written it in the 1930s but when Rostropovich came to the fore in the late 1940s he worked with Prokofiev to revise it into the present form. For a time it was called the Sinfonia Concertante, and then, when revised further, the Symphony-Concerto. And of course Rostropovich owns the work, having championed it around the world. He recorded it in both of the revised forms, but those performances are a bit hard to find now. A pity. Still, the present recording is quite good. It features a cellist I'd not known of before, the 40ish Russian Alexander Ruben. Both the soloist and orchestra (the Polish National Radio Symphony under Antoni Wit, who accompany all the concerti in this set) are top-notch here. The same can be said for the Cello Concertino, Op. 132, which was unfinished at Prokofiev's death in 1953, but completed by Rostropovich and Dimitri Kabalevsky. This ravishing but rarely-heard work is given an outstanding performance. And the disc is filled out by the two delectable Pushkin Waltzes, Op. 120, which are Prokofiev in his most lovably ironic manner.
We come now to the seven symphonies. This is a very uneven set. They are all played by the National Symphony of Ukraine under their regular conductor, the American Theodore Kuchar. When I put on the First Symphony (the 'Classical') my heart fell; this is a dolorous account, taken at very slow tempi until, finally, in the last movement things start moving at a faster clip. The playing is OK, but the interpretation simply won't do. The Second is better but there are some balance problems; it sounds as if half the string section didn't show up the day it was recorded. The brutalist Third Symphony (developed from music taken from his opera 'The Fiery Angel') is given a decent performance. There are better single performances out there, though, including the one, surprisingly, by Ozawa (which is also included in his budget-priced but also variable complete set of symphonies). Symphony No. 4 is coupled with the music that spawned it, the ballet music for 'The Prodigal Son.' It is nice to hear the two pieces side by side; one can hear that Prokofiev took themes from the ballet and subjected them to symphonic development. Both performances here are quite nice. Symphony No. 5 is soft-edged and sounds as if it were recorded in a cathedral-like acoustic. That, coupled with the slight mushiness of the strings, makes this a gentle but not competitive performance. One misses the bite one hears in better performances. I happen to like a no-longer-available performance by the St. Louis SO under Slatkin, but there are others out there who feel the Järvi or the Previn are better than that one. The Fifth is coupled with 'The Year 1941' symphonic suite; this is simply not top-drawer Prokofiev although it has a few creepily effective moments. Symphony No. 6 is given a generally quite good performance. It begins with a scarily peremptory brass introduction (one imagines the NKVD at the door) before the ironically tender violin theme comes in. Nicely done. The Largo is ominously effective. But in the last movement, marked Vivace and taken a little too slowly for my taste, there is a weird drop-off in aural presence that I take to be a problem with either sound engineering or the pressing. However, the filler here, the Waltz Suite, surely one of Prokofiev's happiest collections (waltzes taken from 'Cinderella,' 'War and Peace,' and from a movie score) is possibly the best thing in the whole set. Or maybe it's just that I love these waltzes inordinately no matter how they're played! To complete the set, Symphony No. 7 (which is coupled with No. 3 on CD 2), written in Prokofiev's last year, returns to the simplicity of the Classical Symphony and is one of his most tuneful and least troubled. And it is given a very nicely judged performance here, relaxed and genial.

An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26
I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.
As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25
I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.
I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.
The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).
As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.
One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.
I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!
A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13
I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

-Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112

-War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.
There is no question about the quality:
-Sound: 5 stars
-Performers technique: 5 stars
-Boxes and color: 5 stars

Amazon.com essential recording
One of the great, neglected compositions for cello and orchestra (it was composed for the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich), Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto deserves a much wider audience. The work's length and technical difficulty have, until recently, prevented it from receiving much attention in concert, though it has been recorded several times. Ma's performance is exceptionally fine--listening to the security with which he attacks the stratospheric closing bars is an especially exciting experience--and the coupling of Prokofiev with two of Tchaikovsky's cello-centered works is both apt and refreshing. This disc is one of Ma's very best. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante.......2005-02-19
Quite honestly, I have heard much better recordings of this piece. Yo yo Ma's interpretation of this Sinfonia Concertante is boring. The second movement especially drags along; it lacks the tremendous drive that was originally intended for this piece as well as a lack of expression. It is a recording that is under mediocre. Preferably, I'd choose Han na Chang's recording of this piece for EMI or Rostopovich's.
Underrated.......2004-02-29
As this won a Grammy I guess it's not a well kept secret but it was to me. The recording is pristine much like Respighis Pines of Rome featuring the PSO. I couldn't agree more with the Amazon editorial review--I don't know that I've heard Ma sound better and in my opinion the Pittsburgh Symphony is the most underrated in America. A must have and a steal at this price!
A Must-Have.......2001-09-23
Another Prokofiev masterpiece, another demonstration that Ma's playing is beyond sublime. I've never been a big Tchaikovsky fan, most of his music is too sentimental for my taste, but this recording melted me. Supposedly you can't wear out a CD but I'm going to test that theory with this one.....get it. Listen to it. Be overwhelmed.
What a Pittsburgh native thinks................2001-03-06
While I can hardly agree with the notion that Yo Yo Ma turns to gold everything he touches, he certainly 'shines' like it on this album, but, so does everyone else. With master producing and engineering from Steven Epstein and Bud Graham respectively, it seems that Ma, Maazel and the great Pittsburgh Orchestra were in all their glory on this release. The Variations for Cello and Orchestra are spirited, joyful and lushly played and Prokoviev's Sinfonia Concertante is peformed with power and strength as a Russian-Soviet era piece should be. This is a classic recording in every respect and please take note that it did win a grammy. Highly recommended!!!
Everything Ma Touches Turns To Gold.......2000-09-24
Is there such a thing as a bad Yo-Yo Ma album? The virtuoso who has recently brought us such eclectic recordings as "Simply Baroque" and "Appalachian Journey," here shows us his mastery of Prokofiev's Symphony Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, or "Sinfonia Concertante." While I don't have any other recordings of this piece to compare to this one, suffice it to say that this performance is magnificent. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the conduction of Lorin Maazel plays terrifically. Ma himself showcases his diverse talents, perfectly capturing the essence of the dark, haunting second movement, and playing with greater fervor and forcefulness in the brisk, triumphant third and final movement. For Tchaikovsky's "Variations On A Rococo Theme," I can compare this recording to the famous Rostropovich/Karajan one on DG, and this performance by Ma is its equal. The final piece "Andante Cantabile," also by Tchaikovsky, is beautiful and sublime and the perfect conclusion to this disc. Another essential CD by the great Yo-Yo Ma.

Excellent disc of works that should be better known.......2000-04-07
The main works on this disc, cello concertos in all but name, do not seem to receive the attention that Prokofiev's other concertos do. Judging by these performances, they should be just as celebrated as their more famous piano and violin siblings.
The 39 minute Symphony-Concerto in e is the weightier and more turbulent of the two "concertos". There is a very short orchestral intro before the cello comes flying in with those trademark motoric Prokofiev rhythms. The cello is pushed to its limits throughout the work, and Alexander Rudin's athletic, virtuoso playing and strong, pure tone add up to a great performance. The orchestral scoring is vintage mature Prokofiev - combining angular rhythms and crisp orchestration with a soulful, lyrical Russian heart.
The 19 minute Concertino in g is more reserved and direct, but still full of great tunes; the opening melody is particularly memorable.
The Two Pushkin Waltzes seem like odd filler for a disc of music for cello and orchestra. Luckily, the two 4 minute works turn out to be neglected gems. The first waltz, in F, is colorful and playful while the second, in c#, is more reserved and melancholy. The theme of the second is one of Prokofiev's most haunting moments of Russian lyricism.
The cello works were written for Rostropovich, and there are recordings of him performing these works that you will probably want to check out, but the superbly recorded performances here may very well be better.
Highly recommended.

Rostropovich Plays Prokofiev.......2006-12-27
A couple of years ago, I was given a recording of the Symphony Concerto in E minor and the Concertino in G minor performed by Alexander Rudin and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Ukraine under Theodore Kuchin (as part of a NAXOS boxed set of the complete Symphonies and Concerti of Prokofiev). It was my first exposure to the cello works and I was immensely impressed with both pieces, but wanted to hear them performed by the master to whom they were dedicated. I purchased this recording and found it, on the whole, rather disappointing by comparison. Rostropovich's performance is, for the most part, technically fine but uninspired, almost passionless (of course, I'm comparing it with the other performance). Rozhdestvensky's interpretation of Prokofiev doesn't need comparison: it's just weak, whereas Theodore Kuchar and Rudin, with perhaps a slightly less polished orchestra, put on a brilliant and far richer performance. If you can find a copy of the Rudin recording, I strongly recommend comparing it with this one. Having heard this interpretation by Rostropovich, I'm shelving it in favor of the Rudin version. The minor flaws in the Ukrainian recording now seem insignificant against its much richer musical content.
Authorative Recordings.......2006-05-23
This is an extraordinary disc of Sergei Prokofiev's music for cello played by the musician who directly influenced all of the music recorded here: Mstislav Rostropovich. The main work is the Symphony-Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 125, a work that does not get performed very often much less recorded. It reused the themes of the Cello Concerto Op. 58 but expanded the music. The Symphony is a marvelous piece for the cello and shows off the instrument so that this becomes a concerto within a symphony. The final movement is a theme and variations that ends with a thrilling coda where the cello, blithely singing away, is brought back to earth by several strokes on a side drum in the final bars.
The Cello Concertino, Op. 132 is a delightfully melodious work written in a simple language seems aimed toward young people. At 19 minutes, the Concertino is as long as many concertos but the name is meant to reflect the intimate concept behind the music. The Concertino was written during Prokofiev's last year. The Cello Sonata, written in 1949 for Mstislav Rostropovich, is based on the same structure as the Violin Sonata with a slow opening movement followed by a Scherzo and completed with a finale using a sonata form. The work was first performed by Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter in 1950, and they are the performers in this recording from 1951.
The Symphony-Concerto and Concertino are marvelously played by the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The sound (from 1960 and 1964) is good but not what we are used to with digital recordings. The Sonata has some moments of distortion but the recording is good and of historical importance coming from Prokofiev's lifetime. If you are deeply interested on Prokofiev's cello music and his collaboration with Rostropovich, this is a must have disc.

Get this disc.......2004-08-30
I'll keep this short and to the point. This is a great disc for two reasons. 1. The performances. They are great. 2. The music. I'm a huge fan of Prokofiev, and while this isn't an essential work it's certainly worth owning. I'd never heard anything by Miaskovsky before this, but i can tell you that this concerto is one of the most starkly beautiful things i have ever heard. If you're a fan of either composer, Russian music in general or 'cello music pick this disc up.
GREAT.......2002-07-04
... is the word for this superb disc. It is extremly well performed and easy outcores other availible versions. This is Pletnev and his orchestra at their best (and thats not always the case but on this they are GREAT). Maisky know this pieces well (Rostropvich was his techer and R was a good friend of Prokofiev). This is Maisky at his best and this is one of my favourite classical albums becuase of -of course- Prokofievs MUSIC, sound is very very good balanced, warm and clear, booklet is nice and sleeve art is perfect.
Miakovsky (Prokofievs long time friend) concerto is also something special but it is not so modern in style.. more a kind of mixed bag of late romanticm and modernism and very good.
This is something extra and buy it before it goes out of print.
