5 out of 5 stars Jam and Spice Review.......2000-10-21

After listening to Jam & Spice, I was convinced that not seeing Karen Kohler sing live in Cabaret is to miss half of her artistry. For Caberet is all about removing barriers between performer and audience. As a chanteuse, it is the exchange of emotion and "Blickgeplänkel" (eye play) between audience and singer that defines Cabaret. So while we miss that total experience with the CD, the emotion penetrates nonetheless. And while you may never have heard the sophisticated, romantic, satirical music of Kurt Weill, or don't understand German or French, you'll be drawn into a landscape of the human spirit expressing itself with abandonment and passion. If you sit quietly and drink in Jam & Spice like a handcrafted wine, Karen will enrapture you with her silences, chuckles, whispers, sighs, and moans. For those who are already Kurt Weill fans, there are some "songs that got away" -- too seldom heard songs which Karen delivers with the sensitivity of one who also lived a life between two different worlds.
