Album Description

This collection is chock full of some of opera's juiciest moments, sung by some of opera's greatest voices. Many are familiar whether you know their names: The elegant Barcarolle from Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the lazy, hazy soprano-mezzo "flower" duet from Lakme, the boastful "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, and the "Toreador Song" from Carmen sound like tunes from our subconscious by now; one could say the same about "Musetta's Waltz" and the other Bohème excerpts, as well as Figaro's rousing aria from The Barber of Seville. But the gorgeous quartet from Rigoletto's last act, as sung here by Pavarotti, Sutherland, Milnes, and Tourangeau will enchant, as well, the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor is dazzling, and if you don't know the "Sogno di Doretta" from Puccini's La Rondine, you're in for a beautiful treat. An aria from Tosca with Pavarotti will bring tears to your eyes. A truly fine anthology. --Robert Levine

Nice intro to opera.......2002-11-09
Being somewhat of a novice to opera, I found this c.d. to have a nice variety and be easy to listen to. I'm not saying it's the absolute best rendition of every song (which is pretty subjective anyway) but I actually like every piece on it -- rare for a compilation. Overall, I'd say it's great for someone who just likes listening to beautiful music and singing, as well a good jumping off point for those looking for an opera to delve more deeply into. Pretty good for kids and the opera shy as well -- nothing too harsh, screechy or challenging. My 2.5 yr old loves it.
Selection for the Ages.......2000-02-22
This is indeed a marvelous selection of beautiful Opera, both for the beginner and for the well-listened veteran. Pavarotti makes wonderful choices from the world of Opera, and brings it home to the listener. The arias are breathtaking, and are recognizable to nearly all people. This CD is perfect for the listener of any age, and the buyer of this certainly won't be disappointed!

This is a wonderful way to learn about opera! I have Ira Ross' La Traviata and it really is an interesting way to enrich one's musical education. Highly recommended!
An Eye Opener.......2000-09-20
Opera For Everyone is a combination of music and a lecture by a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher. For someone who is intrigued by opera but does not yet understand some of the nuances or subleties of the piece, the CD is a very enjoyable way to gain insights into this art form. My wife and I heartily recommend it.

The Opera for Everyone series is so filled with the joy and spirit of opera. I love listening to the CD's over and over. I have found that my enjoyment of both The Barber of Seville and Carmen has been increased by hearing the enthusiasm of Ira Ross's commentary. His explanations have allowed me to understand the action, and his carefully chosen musical selections have allowed me to connect with the score in a deeper way. I recommend both of these CD's very highly.
First Opera Experience.......2000-08-04
I have never been to an opera, quite frankly I never had any desire to go to an opera. I was never very impressed with the little opera I may have heard on the radio or Television. UNTIL I listened to Opera for Everyone - The Barber of Seville. What an eye opener this CD was for me. It gave me an understanding of what was going on in the opera, making the music understandable to me. With this understanding I was able to appreciate the beauty of the music. I am looking forward to attending The Barber of Seville and enjoying what I am certain to be a magnificent experience. Thank you Ira Ross for creating this window to opera for me.
