These knockout performances have achieved legendary status, and they are available in many ways on different labels due to a somewhat confused licensing situation. You can buy them on Chandos or on Chesky, and although they may be a bit more carefully remastered on Chesky, the differences aren't all that large; and you get the complete set conveniently on two CDs on Chandos. Earl Wild's performances are simply staggering in their virtuosity and excitement. For sheer bravura, he's unbeatable; and Jascha Horenstein's sweepingly impulsive but unslushy accompaniments recall the composer's own way with the music. A must. --David Hurwitz

Through some licensing fluke, these Reader's Digest recordings are currently available on two CD labels. Chesky puts them on three CDs, adding Jascha Horenstein's superb reading of Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead and Wild's playing (with another conductor) of that silly MacDowell Second Concerto. But enough about that. These are grand performances, played in fine style by a grand-manner pianist who goes far beyond the notes to make exciting music, and supported by one of the greatest conductors... read more

The great Dagmar Krause.......2003-01-31
There is really no other voice like Dagmar Krause. Actually, I would hazard to guess there is really no other person like Dagmar Krause. She is utterly unique. Her work with the Art Bears (Fred Frith/Chris Culter)was darn near perfection. She can go from startling sweet to startling alarming in a mili-second. Imagine a German "chanteuse" ala Marlene Dietrich performing in a smoky Berlin club, but instead of the music being Kurt Weill it is British avante garde with "prepared" guitar and "found" percussion. I may be over exaggerating, but you get the drift. Marvelous stuff. "A Scientific Dream and a French Kiss" carries on with Dagmar's appreciation of the sublime and avante garde. Her cohort Marie Goyette lays a bed of sampled classical snippets, making amazing song structures in which Dagmar lends her unique talents. The results are surprisingly diverse and oftentimes humourous, Dagmar relying on a kind of "stream of consciousness" reading of lyrics and poetry. Highlights for me are "Through My Satellite", "Piazza Navone" and "Your Star", a heart-wrencher if ever there was one. Practically worth the CD alone.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Dagmar.......1999-10-11
it's worth about $100 for the amazing music. Dagmar's voice should be prescribed in place of anti-depressants. It's different, very different from anything she's done before, but god it's amazing!
New experimentaal territory for Krause.......1999-05-07
This is a new departure for the gorgeously talented (and gorgeously voiced) Dagmar Krause. Working with Frenchwoman Marie Goyette, who proves a genius at sampling, she has utilised parts of mostly classical pieces (including, for example, Prokofiev's 'Children's Guide to the Orchestra') to create a wonderland. You think you know the music backwards - then there's a change of sample, Goyette moves the boundaries and you are suddenly swept off into a new land. Meanwhile, Krause has written lyrics that play with and often subvert the meaning of the original orchestral works - with lovely touches of humour and even sections of dialogue between her and Goyette. I was unsure of this technique when I first heard it, but now, a month or more after receiving the CD, I love it - more and more each time I hear it. Except while being angrily haranged by Dagmar at a benefit concert for the miners in London, I've found her wonderfully focussed, one of the most aware and confrontational of artists, and often a lot of fun as well. Lots of people miss the fun - but I live by the Emma Goldman line 'if I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution'. This is lovely - as well as totally new (Of course, I may have missed some intermediary work, since I haven't had access to her work for several years). Order it now from amazon.com -

Historical performances but not entirely outstanding!.......2006-01-24
The team Horenstein-Wild achieved a very remarkable distinction with this set of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos. Maybe Wild was too analytical, reserving the excessive Romantic burden for determined passages. To my mind the best interpretations are the First and Fourth ones; in the Third did not play the Diabolic Cadenza(and that is at least for me, a cruel deception) and the Second has unbeatable performers (The two well known versions of Richter and the sublime live recording of Kapell-Bernstein in a recent edition of Music &Arts never released before in 2004).
In what Paganini concerns, forget about it; Kapell-Reiner still maintanis its absolute leadership.
Just gets better with age!.......2003-12-27
As a pianist with an affinity for the romantic, my introduction to Earl Wild and Rachmaninov was when, in the 1960s, my mother bought us the Readers Digest set of records (when they first came out) from which this CD is made -- it was love at first sight (hearing)! (Guess who took the records with him when he went off to college??!). I thought these were wonderful recordings and interpretations when I first heard them (despite my youth and inexperience then), and now approx. 40 years later (having heard a number of other recordings in the intervening years), my opinion is unchanged. Being a romantic pianist in the spirit of Rachmaninov and Horowitz, Earl Wild sets a very high standard here. It doesn't get any better than this. Only two regrets -- the lack of the full uncut version of the 3rd (the cuts were sanctioned by the composer in a time when audience attention spans were not nearly so long as they are today), and the notable and very regrettable absence of the Isle of the Dead from this CD (which was also on the original set of 1960s records -- an evocative, exciting tone poem in its own right, rendered as well or better than any other I've heard by Horsenstein and company. Wild's 1st and 2nd concerti and Rhapsody from this set are the best I've heard and are still the standard by which I judge other performances of the same pieces (ditto for the Isle of the Dead).
brilliant account.......2003-11-11
very good brilliant good sounding account of these rachmaninov works, as brilliant as these pieces can sound! little or no sentalmentalities, definitely deserves a place in any rachmaninov collection, holds its own place very strongly against such performances by richter, argerish, rachmaninov, ashkenazy, and horowitz just to name a few
THE Rachmaninoff 2nd..........2003-07-13
Passionate and lively, Wild plays the best 2nd that I've ever heard. I do however prefer Argerich's 3rd to his. As for his 1st, 4th, and Rhapsody, I'm not as familiar with others' recordings although the few that I've heard aren't as good as his. This CD is a MUST own for Rach fans, and a good starting point for those new to him.
THE Rachmaninoff 2nd..........2003-07-13
Passionate and lively, Wild's 2nd is by far superior to any that I've heard. The only one to get even close is Van Cliburn. I do however prefer Argerich's 3rd to his. I've yet to listen to many others' verisons of the 1st, 4th, or Rhapsody, although of the few that I have (Ashkenazy, Horowitz, Rach himself) his are better (recording-wise for Rach). This CD is a MUST own for any fan of Rachmaninoff, or it is a good starting point for anyone new to him.
