Wonderful music.......2006-08-24
I became a Janacek fan thirty years ago when a friend introduced me to the Sinfonietta but I was unfamiliar with the solo piano music until I heard "On the Overgrown Path" on a local radio station while driving recently. I was completely captivated, so much so that I stopped the car so I could pay full attention to it. Leif Ove Andsnes does wonders with this music. Highly recommended.
Wonderful Intro To Janacek.......2003-09-05
This recording presents an array of some of Janachek's most accessible, evocative pieces for solo piano, meticulously recorded, and caringly played. I've heard other, matter-of-fact, performances that may be more typical; this is the most musically thoughtful, yet manages to remain passionate at the same time. The music itself has echoes of the impressionists colored with an certain amount of Slavic broodiness, but all of it welcome, and all flavored with Janacek's unique vision (an appropriately mixed metaphor for a music piece). Put it on, turn out the lights, close your eyes, and enjoy an unforgettably rich experience!

Stunning.......2004-01-16
Leos Janacek (1854- 1928)was one of classical music's true mavericks. His music ranges has a wide emotional spectrum and endless rhythmic interest. This 2 CD selection of his lesser-known chamber and instrumental works is exemplary. All artists have a strong feel for the motif style development and the quirky nature of the music. Mikhail Rudy gives very fine renditions of the beautiful Z Ulice Sonata and V Mlach, both of which deserve to be much better known. He mixes an innate feel for the music with seemingly limitless virtuosity. The first disk contains Janacek's important cello work Pohadka (Fairy Tale), here performed admirably by Gary Hoffman. The account of the beautiful 1922 Violin Sonata by Pierre Amoyal and Rudy is simply the best on record. These two artists capture the folksy and rhapsodic nature of the work and convey it with great flair. The two piano concertos are also vintage Janacek, written late in his career. The 1925 Concertino is a highly enjoyable piece, again played with warmth and sincerity by Rudy and accompanied very well by Sir Charles Mackerras (one of the world's leading Janacek specialists) and soloists from the National Opera Orchestra of Paris. Finally, the Capriccio for left handed pianist and a very eccentric ensemble of piccolo/flute, two trumpets, three trombones and a tenor tuba (1926). Rudy is exemplary as usual and the brass playing is very fine indeed. Particular mention should go to the Tenor Tuba player in the third movement. This is a very difficult and exposed solo for the instrument and it's played extremely well here. The only qualms I have with this performance is that the flautist has a rather thin sound. Otherwise this is a thoroughly enjoyable piece played with great feeling. This is one of the best collections of Janacek's music around, get it while you can!
Lesser known Janacek at bargain price.......2002-08-24
This is a must have for all who love Janacek's unusual music. You get to hear rarities in truly competent and moving performances. Pianist Mikhail Rudy is ideal. Sir Charles Mackerras' immense affinity for Janacek's oeuvre is almost legendary by now and quite rightly so. Cellist Gary Hoffman and violinist Pierre Amoyal nicely complement these high level renditions. Now available on EMI's Double Forte, i.e. 2 CD's for the price of one. All DDD.
Great addition to the library.......2002-06-13
For the purposes of my review, I'll stick to my specialty - the piano music. Rudolf Firkusny's readings of this music have long been the standards; he studied piano with Janacek (an odd choice - he wasn't much of a pianist), and his style for Janacek reflects the peculiar style of his teacher, as well as having a magnificent sweep of color. No one else could play the Sonata 1.X.1905 with such an incredible swath of colors. Since then, though, Janacek has become one of the best-played composers today; it is very difficult to find a bad recording of his music, and particularly the music for piano. Between the readings of Andsnes, Goode, and Schiff, there are several fantastic recordings to choose from.
Enter Mikhail Rudy, who continues this happy tradition, not without some issues. The Sonata 1.X.1905 is first up on the CD dedicated to the solo piano works; the tempi are in a good midrange for projecting the scope and meaning of this intense music, the range of dynamics is superb, and his phrasing is glorious. This is technically very awkward music, by the way. The only complaint I have is that he does not observe some of the microscopic, but crucial rests that Janacek notated in the second movement. (To be fair, Firkusny doesn't either.)
Next up is V Mlhách (In the Mist), which the writer of this review played during his time at Oberlin Conservatory. In Rudy's hands, the first movmeent flows beautifully, with a little bit of physical resistance felt in the rubato; the second movement could, again, benefit from a closer look at Janacek's rests; the third movement is glorious, mournful and sentimental without going over the edge; unfortunately, it does not end well, as the fourth movement is very loud, brittle and harsh, and the melodic line is often broken to the point that it is unrecognizable. Even when played smoothly, it is still the hardest of the four to hold together, and it really does not help that Rudy bangs through it.
One failed movement does not ruin the album, though. This is major addition to the Janacek library.

It is pianist András Schiff's near total identification with Janácek's idiom that makes these performances so special. This affinity is felt immediately in his reading of In the Mists, in which Schiff is able to evoke the tranquility of the second movement as easily as he captures the folklike simplicity of the third. The date 1.X.1905 in the title of the Piano Sonata refers to the date of the shooting of a Czech worker by Hapsburg troops. The first movement, marked "Presentiment," is spookily atmospheric, while the chilling second movement, "The Death," leaves a powerful impression. Schiff demonstrates exemplary control, so that the effect is peaceful rather than meandering. On an Overgrown Pathis Janácek at his most concentrated: in particular, the very Czech lachrymose quality of "In Tears" is all the more powerful for its simplicity. Janácek's chosen range of keyboard sonorities is remarkably wide, and Schiff manages to use these to convey the full emotional spectrum. Although these performances do not displace Firkusny's for DG, they certainly offer an entirely convincing alternative viewpoint. ECM's exemplary recording sets the seal on this recommendation. --Colin Clarke
Customer Reviews:
Heart over Head.......2005-04-11
Firkusny studied with Janacek...almost all reviewers agree that his interpretation is truest to Janacek's intent. Yet in head-to-head listenings, it's the Schiff performance that I prefer.
I find the Firkusny performance to be clinical and dry as compared to Schiff, who is more lyrical and poetic. Firkusny may be playing it how Janacek intended, but musicians are artists and are free to interpret a piece any way they like. For this piece, I choose Schiff's interpretation.
Lovely, Dark, and Deep.......2002-07-21
It's late November and you're walking out in the woods. There's a crisp coolness underfoot and in the air. And you've just lost a dear friend to time and circumstance....
That is the type of Recollection which this music evokes for me. The excellent liner notes by Imre Kertesz and Robert Cowan refer to how each one of these evocative pieces is like a short story; each contains its own inner world: the "world in a grain of sand." There is the same mystical element present that one encounters in Arvo Part's music, but there is an impressionistic element as well, more lyrical than Debussy, and more emotional.
The magnificent two-movement Sonate (1.X.1905) is easily the highlight of the album. It was written to commemorate a protesting Czech student executed on that date by German troops. The second movement (entitled simply, "Death") still has, as the liner notes aptly say, "the power to shock." There is an existential element to this music, that "poses the eternally unanswered and unanswerable question of the human condition" (Kertesz).
In response to another reviewer who has stated that the recording's sound quality is lacking: I have listened to this recording on my car's cd player, and there it does sound rather like too much of an echo is present. But on my home stereo system, with quality speakers and subwoofer, the slight echo actually enhances the haunting quality of this music. It is, for me, that echo, that silencio between the notes, that makes this music and this performance, unforgettable.
Janacek with no bite.......2002-01-27
Perhaps it's unfair to compare Schiff to Firkusny, who actually knew Janacek and kept his music always close to his heart. I'm not intimating that Schiff does not know these pieces, but to the contrary, he brings a carefully studied and balanced performance of the pieces. However, the centerpiece of this disc, Janacek's piano sonata, is a disappointment. The first movement, "Presentiment", does not have the anger that Janacek intends. Janacek was a very programatic composer, and Schiff somewhat stifles the edgy passion of this movement. The second movement, "Death", is quite good in contrast. Schiff's Schubertian touch adds fine eloquence to this intense and despondent movement. "In the Mists" pieces are played with fine sensibility and sensitiveness, and other miniatures come off with lyricism, but be it his approach or the acoustics or the Bosendorfer piano that Schiff used... there just is no sense of passion, an element of unmediated emotion. Still, the benchmark is my well-traveled double disc Firkusny on Deutsche Gramophone, with a fine, thrillingly jagged account of the first movement of the sonata.
Out of this world!.......2001-10-23
Andras Schiff has received great acclaim for his Bach and Schubert performances. I really can't understand why. However, I do like Schiff's interpretations of Scarlatti, Mozart and 20th century music. I am very fond of his contribution to the Carter disc that he made a couple of years ago. Thus, it came as no surprise when I found out that it was Schiff, whom I heard in some superb Janacek on NPR lately.
I got familiar with these works thanks to the folks at Naxos, but here we get playing at a whole different level. The works are performed with a sense of "bitter-sweetness", that is reminiscent of the late piano works of Brahms. Schiff performs Janacek as the Czech equivalent of Debussy to great effect. For me this works better than Firkushny's more Dvorak-based interpretation.
Schiff's tribute to Janacek is hauntingly beautiful and should make its way to the collection of anyone with a serious interest in the piano repertoire.
One small comment. Uncharacteristically for ECM, the piano sound is a bit disappointing. The timbre tends towards the nasal/metallic and is very much at odds with the sound that I heard Schiff produce in concert
Haunting and Timely.......2001-09-26
In this time of great tragedy in our nation, music helps ease the grief and anxiety we feel our souls. This phenomenal CD of piano music by the polish composer Leos Janacek, played by Andras Schiff, is hauntingly beautiful. The music plays to the heart.
Average customer rating:
- Very good reading, but not the best, of really lovely music
- Wonderful music, but I'm not sure I like the interpretation
- Absolutely breath-taking
- Firkusny redraws a misguided portrait.

Very good reading, but not the best, of really lovely music.......2004-02-16
As a long-time fan of Janacek, I know this recording from LP. It is quite well played, and is one of the only recordings out there of Janacek's wonderful and generally neglected piano works. My only problem with it is that I also have a recording of some of this music (also on LP, and not available on CD, alas) by Ivan Moravec. Like many of Moravec's recordings, that one ruined anyone else's interpretation for me - it is delicate, nuanced and in places capable of moving one to tears. Firkusny's playing is more straightforward, maybe a trifle colder, but the quality of the music still comes across.
Wonderful music, but I'm not sure I like the interpretation.......2003-01-18
Janacek is one of my favorite composers; I am currently learning "On the Overgrown Path" on the piano. I bought this CD based on the glowing reviews on this site.
I myself don't much care for Firkusny's style. I am only a student. More importantly, I think, I am an American; perhaps I'm too ignorant of Czech style to appreciate the interpretation. That said, I want more clarity. I want the rubato to be more overt. I love the music, but I want it to be more overwhelming---I really like the Guarneri Quartet's interpretation of the string quartets.
I'd be interested in hearing Schiff's interpretation of this music; I'm not sure I'd recommend Firkusny unless you are a scholar or a true devotee of Czech style.
Absolutely breath-taking.......2000-06-20
This is, simply put, one of the best CD sets out there. Janacek truly had a gift for writing piano music, and, equally so, Firkunsky had a gift for interpreting them. Every piece on these discs is a gem, from the peaceful "On the Overgrown Path" to, my personal favorite, the intense and mature "Capriccio", these CDs have no weak points. If you are at all a fan of Moravia's greatest composer, or if you are looking for an introduction to his works, this is a can't miss.
Firkusny redraws a misguided portrait........1999-01-15
These are the first Janacek CDs I have purchased. Previously I heard some of the operas and had been only mildly interested in the great Czech. From those earlier experiences I had drawn a certain image of Janacek that these CDs have forced me to reimagine. "On The Overgrown Path" is performed with such simple warmth that it is overwhelming. "Reminiscence", according to the CD jacket, was Janacek's final work. It is an historic half a minute. The two movement sonata - the last movement to which Janacek apparently tore to pieces and hurled into a river - is a wonderful blend of Czech morbidity and intermittent promise. This is an awesome release that any pianophile absolutely must own. I would have given it ten stars if I could.

Customer Reviews:
Music of conflict, pain and resolution.......2001-11-26
Of all the funeral music played by radio stations after the 9/11 disaster, this disc stands out as the most appropriate. Planes' interpretation admirably captures the pain and anger of that time, and lets the music provide its own consolation. I call this my "conflict" music, and play it whenever I have disharmony in my life.

Album Description
A rare and authoritative edition of the complete piano works of Janácek by one of the most respected exponents of his music. Martino Tirimo has been an international soloist for 35 years and his recordings of Debussy, Schubert and others are legendary. He received a Gold Disc in 1995 for his best-selling recordings of Rachmaninov's Second Concerto and Paganini Rhapsody. In 1999 he composed the film score for The Odyssey, which was screened in eight episodes on Channel 4 and other European TV channels. He celebrated the year 2000 with four series devoted to Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas, including one at St. John's Smith Square in London.
Customer Reviews:
Mediterranean inspiration!.......2006-03-28
Tirimo, the famed Greek pianist achieved a special distinction in the middle Seventies. A deep insight vision, has allowed him to scrutinize piano works that don `t necessarily appear regularly on Concert programs. This selection of Janaceck 's piano pieces confirm it.
After Firkusny `s missing, there was an evident declivity around these works, that pitifully denote a certain disdain for that music. Its bucolic and Pastoral character don' t demerit at all its innate virtues.
Accurate phrasing and artistic conviction invites me to recommend you: These are valuable pieces of the keyboard repertoire of the last Century.
