Superb voices!.......2006-03-01
The Madrigal Choir under the leadership of its founder Marin Constantin was once described as a "Stradivarius violin in a Paganini's hand". Listening to this CD you will know why. Highly recommended.

A pox on all censors!.......2006-02-26
Horia, as Nicolae Bretan wrote it, is a very good opera. This performance has been mutilated by the Communist censors. The finest aria in the opera is Father Costan's blessing in scene 4, which the censors have cut for being too religious. This is a musical crime. Dramatically, the culmination of the opera is Horia's charge to his daughter in scene 7. The censors have also cut this for being too religious. Without this bridge, the final chorus is a jarring shift in the flow of the music and makes no dramatic sense at all.
If we can't have a post-Communist performance, could we at least have this performance with the cuts restored?

Lyrical and powerful, Bretan makes good use of the score to amplify the libretto. Those who enjoyed Golem or Luceafule will appreciate this welcome addition to the published works of a composer who deserves wider recognition.
