This CD is the long-awaited follow-up to jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis's 1986 debut, Romances for Saxophone with the English Chamber conducted by Andrew Litton. Since that project, Marsalis has led his own jazz combos and worked with The Grateful Dead and Sting. On this recording, Marsalis's superb soprano and alto sax are buoyed by the wonderful, conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble that was featured on Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World. Marsalis's clear sound and mature phrasing imbue French classics like Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte," Debussy's ragtime-rhythmed "Golliwogg's Cake-Walk," and Fauré's "Pie Jesu" with verve and vitality. Marsalis navigates the New World syncopations of Darius Milhaud's "Saudades do Brasil" with the same ease he displays on the composer's jazz-inspired ballet, "La création du monde." On Jacques Ibert's showcase for the alto saxophone, "Concertino da camera," Marsalis's negotiation of its florid melody and his swing-spiced cadenza show that the innovations of jazz improvisation have enriched and extended the classical tradition. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Some Interesting Arrangements of Early 20th Century French Music.......2007-02-04
A few years back, I remember hearing Branford Marsalis interviewed as part of an intermission feature of a broadcast from, the Metropolitan Opera. He was speaking about the one opera that made him fall in love with the musical form. Most people who fall in love with opera usually name a work such as LA BOHEME or RIGOLETTO as a first love, but for Marsalis the choice was TRISTAN UND ISOLDE. As he began stating his reasons for choosing one of Wagner's monumental and challenging works, he began discussing the composer's intricacies of the vocal and orchestral components and the originality of the work. It was obvious we were hearing a musician's musician speak. Marsalis has the same appreciation for what a composer intends in this collection of early twentieth century French compositions and just like the interview, demonstrates that he is a musicians' musician.
CREATION is a collection of early twentieth century works arranged for saxophone and orchestra. Marsalis is joined by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for arrangements that are original yet also respect the intention of the composers. Overall CREATION is a great relaxation disc, with the exception of some of the Milhaud pieces (the arrangement of LA CREATION DU MONDE is perhaps the one piece that makes this collection of what could be termed background music somewhat startling). Our local classical music radio station often plays some of the pieces from this collection and calls the pieces "tracks to relax." The selections are varied from Debussy, Satie, Ravel and Faure to the more experimental sounds of Darius Milhaud. The choice of selections shows the variety of the music and in many ways shows that the line between classical and jazz in the twentieth century is not always as fixed as it seems.
This collection provides great musical entertainment and offers some interesting interpretations of great music that's certain to be enjoyed by many.
B. Marsalis delights, but does not surprise.......2005-08-16
Can an album seem pleasant, become a bit predictable, and then drift into the beautiful category? Here is graceful playing by one of the best saxophonists alive today, but there is no perspiration in the music. Why perspiration? Because when playing like this is so effortless, it does not ask much of the listener to join in with the musician's effort.
Then I realize this is all BS. Just listen to one of the best instumentalists playing very nice tunes. It is not his fault if it is so smooth, and clean. Just great.
The Disc Title Says it All.......2004-10-14
"Creation" is probably the best word one could choose for this fine effort. This is an interesting recording, one that mostly excels, but also has some shortcomings.
Branford's playing is a lot of things here, studied, practiced, prepared, thorough, and strong. It could have been more sensitive and collaborative. This is not something that necessarily need be laid at his door; it could be a "group" thing as much as anything. Other reviewers have noted that ensemble players often have difficulty working within an orchestra setting, and that the presence of a conductor could have kept things in check.
But that was not the point of this effort. If Orpheus and Branford had wanted a conductor they would have hired one. So one must use a more nuanced and blended yardstick to measure this . The compositions themselves clearly have a strong jazz influence, so the conceptual approach of the players is not only entirely appropriate but interesting. And that's what in the end separates jazz music from classical music. You may not like what people play or the way they play it, but at least it's not the same old stale sh-t. Branford's history of exploring a variety of musical stylings comes in well here; I appreciate his playfulness and almost joyful approach to some of these pieces. That's the way I think they ought to be played.
Highly Recommended.
Fairly lackluster, but interesting to hear.......2001-12-08
Branford Marsalis is an excellent jazz saxophonist.
However, he runs into the same problems many jazz musicians have when trying to "cross over" into classical: too little emphasis on tone quality, rough articulation, trouble blending with the strings, and in some cases, sloppy ensemble technique.
Perhaps this latter problem has more to do with the lack of a conductor than a lack of skill.
Marsalis plays quite respectably on the Ibert. He doesn't take the ossia altissimo passages, but many "classical" artists don't either, so I can't fault him for that.
The "Scaramouche" comes off the best of all the traditional recital pieces on this disc. Marsalis caputures the fleeting playfulness of the first movement, and his technique is flawless here.
His tone is unacceptably bright and raucous in the "Creation du Monde," however. His playing in that piece is beyond the range of any interpretation I've ever heard. Much of this has to do with the placement of the microphones and the production of the recording as well.
I would have preferred that the disc include fewer transcriptions, but Marsalis seems to enjoy recording transcriptions instead of the more serious works for classical saxophone. It would be interesting to hear him play some of the heavier repertoire: the Glazonov concerto, the Dubois Concerto, the Dahl concerto, etc.
Shivers down my spine.......2001-08-03
If you're a Branford Marsalis fan, you'll be on the edge of your seat 4 seconds into the opening cut. Imagine his exquisitely clear alto sax intoning the melody of Satie's Gymnopedie. And with Orpheus's incredible group energy (it's an orchestra whose members conduct themselves) and you'll understand.
I thought it would be wonderful background as I sat working at my computer -- it's so incredible it's distracting. Savor this.

Fantastic CD.......2006-02-08
This is a must buy CD for any music lover.
The emotion that Kerkezos puts into these performances is just amazing. He has a beautiful tone, a beautiful sound and has made a fantastically beautiful CD. Whether you just like saxophone music or want to listen to how a true genius plays, you must but this CD. One of the best sax players around today, and no doubt for a long time to come.
Thankyou Theodore for enlightening my CD collection :)

the most usefull cd for a saxophonist.......2004-03-25
I think this work is the most suitable for the advaced saxophonist to approach the composers.
Because the performer gives with accuracy, artistry and sensitivity the pieces.
It was what the audience needed to get to know the classical saxophone.
Congratulations again to the performer!!!!!!!!
Thankyou naxos.......2004-03-08
This CD is a huge improvement on the one released earlier (with Sohre Rabhari)- I can't remember the spelling. Anyway, this is a good CD. People familiar with other recordings of the Glazunov, Harle, Rousseau, Bornkamp etc, may find his tempi a bit unusual, but the tempo indications of the Glazunov are always a source for debate, I haven't checked them against a metronome and the score, but from what I remember, people always seem to play slightly faster than indicated.
Nonetheless, a good value buy- most things are so expensive, and hard to find (in New Zealand, anyway) All things considered, cost, quality, musical integrity etc, contribute to the high rating of this disc.
Great classical saxophone music.......2004-01-25
I heard Mr. Kerkezos playing live with the London Philarmonic
Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. I was impressed by his beautiful tone and mastery of the saxophone as well as his skillful arrangement of the Tango Suite for Saxophone and Orchestra by Astor Piazzolla. I found this CD by searching on the web for his name.
It consists of beautiful performances of pieces of the classical saxophone repertoire such as the Rhapsody for Saxophone by Debussy, the Glazunov concerto and Scaramouche by Milhaud. The last piece "Song of Dionyus" by contemporary greek composer, Ekaterini Karamessini showcases the versatility of Mr. Kerkezos as a saxophone performer. I highly recommend this recording both to listeners new to the classical saxophone as well as listeners familiar with that repertoire.

Classic Art Songs Sung with Brilliance and Artistry.......2006-11-10
Dawn Upshaw possesses a voice with beautiful bell canto tonal quality and uses the glissando technique, only when effective, rendering this collection of uncommon art songs superbly sung. The entire album is a joy to listen to...
Pretty, but not memorable.......2006-04-29
'Forgotton Songs, Dawn Upshaw sings Debussy' with James Levine at the piano is, to my layman's ear, very pretty to listen to, but not a whole lot to get excited about. If you are especially fond of Upshaw, you must have this recording. If you are especially fond of Debussy, other vocalists may have just a little more to offer. Everything about this recording is 'nice', just not a whole lot to get excited about.
Returning to the Recital Hall: A Soiree.......2005-04-09
Dawn Upshaw is one of the most intelligent and creative and adventuresome singers on the concert stage today. Just reviewing the list of her recordings available and it is obvious that she has paid attention to both contemporary and established composers in a way that is truly refreshing.
Here the program is devoted to the works of Claude Debussy, a composer for whom Upshaw has a particular penchant. Her voice is crystal clear, perfectly focused and yet not afraid to animate when the lyrics demand. She covers three cycles here: 'Ariettes oubliees' (for this listener the most successful on the album), 'Racueil Vasnier', and 'Cinq Poemes de Charles Baudelaire' (contrast these with the recently released Susan Graham version and see what interpretation is all about!).
The collaboration between Upshaw and James Levine is sensitive (if not always the pianism of others..). But the entire recital is uplifting and satisfying for the variation in the songs, recorded sound, the generosity of the disc, and most of all for the musical intelligence in which these songs are performed! Grady Harp, April 05
Pretty sound spoiled by a bad vocal habit.......2004-05-07
Every voice teacher I have ever had, and I have had many, were unanimous in their advice that sliding into notes is something that must be done with great moderation. Dawn Upshaw does it all the time and to the ears of a trained singer it becomes extremely annoying extremely quickly. Constant sliding into notes is less objectionable if one actually reaches the right pitch in the process. Miss Upshaw frequently does NOT, resulting in numerous instances where she is simply not in tune at all on some notes. Her sliding also creates constant dissonances with the piano which are entirely undebussyesque. If it were Webern or Berg she were singing she might get away with it. Here she does not. NOT RECOMMENDED.
P.S. Since writing this review (quite some time ago), I was fortunate to hear a recording of Ms. Upshaw in a production at the Metropolitan Opera where she didn't do any of her annoying sliding at all - not once - (probably because it was music from a much earlier time) The difference was astounding. It was a glorious performance. It was hard to believe it was the same person. This, more than ever, confirms my opinion that she ruined this recording with a bad singing habit.
Excellent!.......2003-11-26
This recording of Debussy's Melodies are really excellent. Dawn Upshaw's voice is exactly right for this kind of music - light, charming, and lyrical, with real sensitivity to the text. The Ariettes Oubliees are the best I've heard, with the exception of Frederica von Stade. In addition, her interpretation of Mandoline from the Vasnier Songbook is perfect - the tempo, piano, voice, and interpretation are exactly right. My only criticism is that the diction, while perfectly clear, has an "American" accent that is sometimes distracting.

Excellent Collection, Even Better Price.......2005-10-14
I picked this CD up as an afterthought while searching for some background music for a play I was putting together, and while it cost less than half of the other swashbuckler soundtrack CDs, it has more tracks than most, more variety than any(dramatic to romantic to action), and solid sound quality. If you're after a whole collection of the Korngold era tunes in one CD, this is it.
An Oldie Re-Issue, But Still A Goodie!.......2005-04-03
A re-issue of tracks from Marco Polo 8.223607, 1995. Practically perfect in every way. But the brass could be a bit more crisp and defined. Primarily an early work from master restoration magicians Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg. And now at "popular prices." Don't delay on this one!

Watch Out! This Music Will Raise Your Cholesterol!.......2005-03-16
And it will buckle your swash, too.
These performances appeared in 1995 on Naxos's full-price sister label, Marco Polo, and are among a spate of movie music scores making their appearances now at budget price. Some are wonderful - like Honegger's score for 'Les Misérables,' Georges Auric's 'Beauty and the Beast,' and Wojciech Kilar's 'Dracula.' Some don't stand up too well on their own, like Steiner's 'King Kong' or Waxman's 'Objective: Burma!'. But this one definitely has the best of the best, all in that late-romantic, richly scored music we associate with the genre. The producers have put together some of the best cues from four swashbucklers and from beginning to end this is music to enjoy, with no dead wood anywhere along the way.
The Main Title of Miklós Rosza's 'The King's Thief' is a heckuva lot better than the 1955 Edmund Purdom movie for which it was written. Victor Young's 'Scaramouche' is represented by nine cues, among them the delightful 'Main Title' and the faux-baroque 'Pavane.' The inventor of this sort of movie music, Erich Maria Korngold, is here represented by six cues from the 1935 Errol Flynn blockbuster, 'Captain Blood.' All five cues are terrific and sweep you along, but I particularly like 'Slaves--Arabella and Blood,' a seven-minute tone poem of great beauty and ingenuity. Max Steiner, a transplanted Viennese like Korngold, contributes six cues from 'The Three Musketeers,' also from 1935. The love theme is really gorgeous.
These scores were reconstructed by the late Christopher Palmer ('The King's Thief'), William Stromberg ('Scaramouche') and John Morgan ('Captain Blood' and 'The Three Musketeers') from conductor's piano scores; the full scores, like many of their era, were lost. In one case the score had only a violin line. The three arrangers attempted, then, to reproduce the orchestrations from the movie sound track itself, a difficult task at best, but it sounds to me like they did a marvelous job collectively. These orchestrations have the sweep and grandeur of the originals.
The Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Potsdam, Germany) is conducted by Richard Kaufman. They are beautifully played and recorded.
This one is worth having if you love the flamboyant style favored in adventure films; this is the crème de la crème.

Susan Graham has firmly established herself as one of our leading mezzos in opera and recital. Her voice, infinitely varied, perfectly focused, and produced, has the mellow glow of burnished bronze, but at the top she narrows her vibrato to give it a brighter, more intense quality. This live recording of her Carnegie Hall concert last April combines total vocal control with the spontaneity and excitement of a performance--complete with audience reactions--and displays her stylistic versatility, her charm, expressiveness, and communicative projection to brilliant advantage. The program features two German song cycles and several groups from her signature French repertoire. Brahms' "Gypsy Songs," one of his numerous Hungarian-influenced compositions, use texts derived from Hungarian folksongs and deal essentially with love and yearning. Graham captures all their changing moods, from melancholy to exuberance, making the last one soar ecstatically, but sometimes loses their simplicity in mannerisms and over-inflection. Alban Berg's "Seven Early Songs" on texts by various poets, written long before he became an atonalist, are super-romantic, amorous, dramatic; only the two final ones harbor hints of his future style. They are sung with rapturous inwardness. Four songs by Debussy on his own descriptive, pensive verses are calm, dreamy, mellow, caressing; four by Poulenc on poems of Apollinaire are satirical parodies; one is a bravura patter-song. Two songs by André Messager and one by Moises Simons, taken from their operettas, are basically cabaret songs and grand fun; they give Graham a fine opportunity to show the lighter side of her artistry. The encores include a serious song by Reynaldo Hahn, a humorous one by Debussy, Mahler's "Liebst du um Schönheit," a love song he wrote for his wife, and the first performance of a song written for Susan Graham by Ben Moore: a hilarious spoof on the fate of a mezzo condemned to sing trouser roles--with quotes from them--when she longs to be a "Sexy Lady." --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Susan Graham is a True Recitalist.......2004-12-16
Though not usually one for true live recordings that include audience applause and response, SUSAN GRAHAM AT CARNEGIE HALL works well on every level. Not only is she in top form (as is her collaborator Malcolm Martineau at he piano) vocally and interpretatively, she demonstrates here an obvious rapport with her audience that is magical.
The repertoire here could not be more varied - and successful in every portion of this recital. Graham's voice has that ability to move from her usual mezzo soprano range into the lyric/spinto range with the greatest of ease. The Brahms 'Zigeunerlieder' are full of zest and sparkle. The Debussy 'Proses lyriques' are sensually liquid and Graham's French diction is as perfect as it gets: the Poulenc cycle feels so very natural for all its underlying difficulties. The too rarely heard Berg 'Sieben fruhe Lieder' are elegant and involved and the Messanger and Simons highlight Graham's ease of strolling through unknown works, making them sound so familiar.
Encores are included and for once "thank goodness!" Susan Graham has a special affinity for Reynaldo Hahn and she has mad 'A Chloris' her very own. For the Mahlerites she offers 'Liebst du um Schonheit' (including a comment to the audience) and a Debussy song and a witty ditty written for her by Ben Moore - just for fun.
The audience fortunate enough to have been present during this live recording on April 14, 2003 have now a living memento. For the rest of us that magic is fully contained on this very special recording. Grady Harp, December 2004

The epitome of French Saxophone.......2000-04-29
This is a very excellent recording of the standards in the French Repertoire. The pieces are executed flawlessly, with the usual French style of fast vibrato and certain ornamentations. Great recording for students and teachers trying to put together pieces for recitals, and Tableaux de Provence is often a standard for college auditions.
Savijoki and the pianists work well together, and this cd should be a standard in every classical saxophone collection.

Customer Reviews:
delicate & uplifting.......2006-05-30
This isn't the most dramatic of discs, but it's very relaxing, bathing the listener in a smooth, gentle sound that to me feels like it could be devotional religeous music. (That it isn't only adds to my own enjoyment.) It doesn't grab attention but rather sneaks up on the conciousness, while some of the playful melodies stick in the mind without the listener being aware of where they have heard them.
I bought this disc because I wanted to hear some Lully, and this was a cheaper Naxos disc, but I want to hear some more now that I have experieced the delight of this composer.
An enchanting and refreshing delight.......2004-02-12
This music is so uplifting --- it seduces the listener to enter another world. Both sopranos, Haines and Nafziger, are wonderful. But Nafziger, without a doubt, is essentially the highlight of this CD. Her voice soars to ethereal heights with stately conviction, all the while conveying such warmth, comfort and passion. This is a great young talent that will one day command international attention.
The Aradia ensemble should be congratulated for presenting such music with absolute precision and a depth of character. Bravo!
Ignore the review below. There is no danger here........2002-10-04
This is a terrific disc: it's one of my personal favourites, and I recommend it highly. The Aradia Ensemble plays very well under the direction of Kevin Mallon, and Haines' singing is excellent: her duet with Nafziger on track 3, "Récits Italiens chantés par Mademoiselle de la Barre et la Signora Anna Bergerotti," is quite beautiful. This disc is not quite as good as a more recent release, "Les Divertissements de Versailles" by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, but at the low Naxos price this one's a bargain. If you're a Lulliste like myself, you'll want both of them, without question.
Like "music fan" below, I prefer period performances, especially when it comes to French Baroque music. But in my opinion, his review of this disc is nonsense. The Aradia Ensemble provides an authentic performance on period instruments. Kazoos are included on _one_ track, as a substitute for an obsolete monochord instrument: the trumpet marine. The single string of the trumpet marine creates a brassy buzz that sounds a lot like a kazoo, believe it or not. Far from an historical perversion, the result is quite authentic, and comical too, as the composer intended. So don't let "music fan's" prejudices put you off: this disc is as authentic as it is entertaining.
Danger, Danger..........2002-03-20
Well performed and recorded this disc is marred by the fact that the performances are inauthentic. Kevin Mallon's penchant for Stokowskian like acrobatics leads him to substitute kazoos and paper and comb for authentic instruments in these performances. For some this might be cute and sexy and oh so hip. For me, admittedly someone who prefers authentic performance (all that historical training perhaps), this is just simple historical perversion (a common malady amongst record company executives and conductors who fancy themselves pop culture icons, good businessmen, and aesthetically omniscient).
I am surprised at Naxos. Ethics should require that record companies let us consumers know that specific performances are not authentic (particularly when period instruments are ostesibly used), cut, adapted, or whatever. That so many record companies don't do this probably is the best indicator of the lack of honesty and integrity amongst so many record producers.
Anyway, the moral of the story is this: stick with those who brought you in this repertoire. Opt for Christie and Minkowski here and stay away from the machinations of Kevin Mallon.
I thought it was great!.......1999-05-05
I really liked this CD! It sounded light and airy and very "original baroque." I find it's a wonderful thing to listen to when you're cleaning up the house because it sounds great in the background too. Most of the ballet excerps are light and have a good beat. The only thing I didn't like is that they played the kazoo on one peice; it was funny once, but then I thought it was a little inapropriate. I wanted to hear the music. Anyway, great CD, Aradia!

CLassical Clarinet Lovers Look Here!.......2000-06-13
This is a very good CD that covers a broad range of music. The Mozart Concerto for clarinet is especially good, as Emma is able to really make it sing. Other highlights on this disc are the Finzi Bagatelles and the "Victorian Country Gardens". Both are exceptional pieces of music. I had never heard Emma play before, but now I am hooked, and I can't wait to get another recording. I definetly reccomend this for the classical Clarinet lover.
