The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

This CD along with the others in the series is very good. So far we have collected about ten different ones. They are thorough and interesting. I homeschool and it has been a great additon to our teaching materials and tools. The narrarated history format interspersed with the composer's music is key to keeping the interest of the children. A must-have for introducing classical music with historical background to your kids and at a great price on Amazon!

Fantastic Album.......2007-03-16

This is a great album that I listen to over and over again. It really makes me feel... Sarah Chang is one of the greatest violin players and she has done a fabulous job on this album.

Easy listening Chang.......2006-03-09

This collection, consisting mostly of reissues, showcases Chang's expressive qualities, with the emphasis being mostly on the slow and dreamy side of her art. One has the feeling that the producers envisioned this disc as background music for a romantic candlelight dinner or some such, and for that purpose it is perfectly sufficient. Chang, of course, is a major violinist and none of the playing here is less than topnotch. As a musical experience for connoisseurs, however, "Sweet Sorrow" has its drawbacks, chief among them being the sameness of mood and tempo. Also, the inclusion of fragments of works such the Vieuxtemps Fifth Concerto and the Tchaikovsky Concerto is musically unsatisfying; the latter is particularly irritating as it leaves the end of the slow movement simply hanging. It may be of some significance that some of the most engaging playing from Chang is heard on the earliest tracks, the Chopin Nocturne and Liszt Consolation, recorded in her child prodigy days; here a genuine love for the music comes through that is somewhat muffled in most of the other selections.

total disappointment.......2005-08-14

In Chang's performance of the Vitali Chaconne, the feeling and passion initially apparent in her playing was wiped out by her
almost total lack of energy, expressed in a thin sound that often
made it difficult to distinguish the solo violin from the orchestra strings. By the second quarter of the piece, I was shocked to find the sound of her violin fading out in mid melody. It was so terrible, so embarrassing, I had to stop listening.

I think a much better interpretation of the Vitali is the one by Oistrakh, but sadly it is with piano accompaniment while Chang's is with orchestra - one that performs superbly... So that the aesthetic crime that is Chang's anemic, thin playing is doubly terrible.

some ways to go in knowing sorrow..........2004-09-04

Sarah Chang is no doubt technically brilliant on her instrument, however, her playing lacks depth and consistency of style. In the piano piece by Lizt re-arranged for violin for example, she has great difficulties in transitions and is therefore subdued in her musicality. The orchestral interpretation/edition of Saint Saens piece on this album is awful. Similar recordings by Anne Sophie Mutter or Midori Goto show greater maturity and are much more pleasing to the ear.

emotionally riveting vitali.......2004-01-13

The Vitali is worth the price of the cd. The rest is also very good - although obviously all very similar pieces. HOWEVER, this rendition of the Vitali with full orchestra (which is hard to find) is emotionally riveting. I usually stop the cd at that point because it's hard to listen to anything else immediately after that. Kind of like Jacqueline DuPre's Elgar - you need quiet after it to return yourself to everyday life.

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. It's only natural we sometimes hit the high seas....make that Cs. This is one box set about which we sing praises. This set features more than two hours of the finest music from across the centuries by such composers as Schubert, Chopin, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky and Glass. The set also comes with a 562-page illustrated book, detailing the lives of hundreds of composers, a
glossary of musical terms and a unique guide to the classical music used in 360 top films.

Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z Classical are orchestral. I was so impressed with this collection that I purchased the Discover the Classics Vol's 1-3 which will give you a more detailed look at the great classics. Take a look at the Naxos web site at NAXOSUSA.COM -- what you will see will blow your mind -- there are literally thousands of pieces that you could listen too!

At this price, how can one complain?.......2001-09-30

This is pretty much a CD version of a mini-Naxos and Marco Polo catalog. All the pieces and extracts are ordered chronologically on the 2 CDs and are of very acceptable quality, but don't expect excellence in every track. Personally, I was particularly disappointed with one of my favourite Pachelbel pieces. The Naxos Canon & Gigue lacks all the emotion of my favourite versions.

Still, any possible weaker performances are of little importance after you get your hands on the fat booklet with over 500 pages. The booklet offers a short intro about the great composers, a glossary of musical terms, a list of works used in films and dozens of illustrations of several composers.

Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference.
You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact.

It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions.

Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed.

I can only wish that popular music (rock, rap, dance) compilers could take a hint from this album, and include only the GOOD songs. This has all of the well-known classical songs. I really wanted to get the title of a particular classical song, and I looked for 4 weeks on the Internet until I remembered I had this album. I put it in, and the second song, "O Fortuna", was it.

From 2001: A Space Odyssey's theme, to Beethoven's fifth, this CD has the all time best compilation of Classical and Romatic music I have ever heard. The only thing that comes close is Polygram's Really Mad About the Classics.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

Henryk Szerying made in my opinion, the most volcanic , mercurial and expressive reading of the Schumann's concerto. His phrasing and tune were unique. Antal Dorati contributed with his immense talent and musicality to lead this version tho the glorious Pantheon of the unequal performance of this work.
The Mendelssohn sounds OK but there are other superior versions. Szigetti, Stern, Heifetz, Gitlis and Rosand are the best exponents of this concert.

Sublime Schumann, great Bartok.......2002-12-27

I didn't even know that Schumann wrote a Violin Concerto until it appeared coupled with some other music on a used CD that I bought recently. Sadly, it was played by a violinist with a vibrato so wide that I couldn't tell what notes he was playing. But I could tell that the piece was a gem. So I looked on line for a recording by a violinist who I thought would be better suited to this music. Luckily Szeryng recorded it, and it is everything I hoped for.

I had the good fortune to hear Szeryng in person twice, playing Bach unaccompanied partitas and sonatas. I've never heard anyone play like that since. In my opinion his recordings of that music are as good as any of the more famous recordings, and better than most.

Anyway, back to the Schumann: detractors have said that the organic unfolding of this concerto is evidence of his final mental illness. I agree that the outer movements are difficult for both performer and listener. But the middle movement, marked Langsam, is a poetic utterance of the greatest inspiration, and worth the price of admission all by itself. What a tragedy that this concerto was withheld from publication by his friends, and unknown for so many years.

Szeryng's facility, natural phrasing and impeccable intonation are wonderful as always, but with this musician virtuosity alone is never the point. What's special is how unerringly he finds the spiritual center of the piece, and he never lets go.

Get this CD for the heart-rending middle movement of the Schumann and for the sparkling Bartok Rumanian Dances. I can't imagine anyone playing either piece more beautifully. Finally, if you need a recording of the Mendelssohn concerto, this one should more than satisfy you. And don't let the analog source deter you: the sound is very good.

Shumann: come on, what's not to love?.......2002-12-19

Violinist Henryk Szeryng needs no introduction, many believe he recorded the best recordings of the solo Bach set. The tone on this CD is especially great as renowned violin collector Herbert Axlerod once said his violin is one of the best concert violins in the world, when I read that I ran out and bought all of his records. Szeryng has showed many times that he is one of the best violinists of the 20th century because of his impeccable intonation, timing, imaginative phrasing, and unique musical delivery of sound.

The Schumann violin concerto has a surprisingly unpopular history. His chamber works are so romantic and are among the finest in the entire repertoire. His wife Clara Wieck was a massive virtuoso pianist and of course he was good friends with the immortal Brahms. If any there is any proof needed of Schumann's genius just listen to his mind-boggling "Kreislerana" for solo piano. Schumann's music is so emotional and precious to me it's a shame what hapened to him.

This is an awesome recording of the Schumann Violin Concerto, I have heard recordings by Kremer, Bell, and Menuhin but none even come close to this performance for me. There is never a sense of hesitation or lack of technique, nor any lack of inspiration or feeling in the music. For me, this is an absolutely perfect CD, I can scarcely imagine a better recording. Perhaps in the hands of a different soloist, this concerto might be considered meaningless but every note Szeryng plays has meaning and he truly makes this concerto come alive.

The Mendelssohn is the same, flawless and full of emotion and no sense of hesitation or lack of technique. While I prefer Perlman's recording of the Mendelssohn slightly I recommend both to contrast each other and any other recording you may prefer.

This is my favorite CD that Mr. Szeryng recorded and one of my top 20 all time violin disks, if you do not have this you should get it for sure. I can recommend this disk totally without hesitation especially to people who have not heard this concerto and are getting sick to listening to other ones over and over.

Good music; great violin playing.......2002-03-19

Though Henryk Szeryng never achieved the fame accorded to many other 20th century violinists, he was equal or superior to them all in technical ability and unsurpassed in artistry. All of the performances on this CD are outstanding. If I'm not mistaken, Szeryng's recording of the Schumann concerto was the first ever made, as this concerto was unavailable for decades and only rediscovered in the 20th century. It still equals or surpasses any performance of this concerto subsequently recorded.

The four star rating refers to the uneven quality of some of the compositions; Szeryng's performances definitely rate five stars.
