Editorial Reviews

This recording presents highlights from the "real time" Traviata presented on European television in June 2000. The idea was to heighten the drama by placing the opera in Parisian locations which still reflected the 1850s setting, and then having the soloists sing as plausibly as possible to a recorded soundtrack. The effect was somewhat bizarre--especially when it appeared that Violetta's cramped, little Act IV apartment had a mysteriously grand concert-hall acoustic. The recording allows one to judge the performance on its musical--instead of its televisual--merits, however, and on the whole it comes off rather well. Dreamboat tenor José Cura makes a passionate and convincing Alfredo, and Eteri Gvazava captures the pathos, if not the sparkle, of Violetta. She excels in the dramatic deathbed music of Act IV, but is less happy in the spinto (and fiendishly difficult) scales and leaps of "Sempre libera" in Act I. The warm orchestral accompaniment is sensitive to the singers, but only occasionally lacks power. All in all, this is a good introduction to the opera and a neat tie-in to the TV production. --Warwick Thompson

5 out of 5 stars Where is Amore I?.......2001-02-16

This CD is a selection of arias from Italian operas. Most of the time when you get a compilation like this, you feel lucky if you like 2/3 of the selections. In this case, whoever did the selecting did a great job, there isn't a clinker in the lot. About half of the arias are by Puccini, the rest are by Verdi, Donizetti, and Giordano. Singers include Kiri Te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Tucker, and Andrea Rost. There is enough variety to keep the whole CD interesting, yet the mood is consistent throughout. The sound is generally quite good, and while I am not generally a fan of live recordings, the audience response in the performance by Pavarotti really does add excitement to the presentation. Given the title of this CD, I assumed this was the second in a series, and I liked it so much I went looking for the original. Unfortunately, I can find no other CD on the Sony label titled Amore - too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Operatic icon. Performer against which others are measured........2007-05-26

Maria Callas may be the only female operatic 'superstar' working in my lifetime. In the 1950s and early 1960's, she had all the star power and paparrazi draw of Jackie and Marilyn, far outstripping the fame to the world at large of her primary rival, Renita Tibaldi. I am not an expert, or even an experienced amateur at evaluating operatic sopranos; however I've listened to several of the modern crop, and while the newbies probably do a better job of keeping on key, none of them can match the drama emoted by Ms. Callas on any given aria. All three releases are especially good buys, as they all run to over 72 minutes; however the recording quality does show its early (pre-multitrack, pre-digital) recording technology. Each is as good as the next regarding content, but 2 and 3 are a bit better in sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars La Divina set the stage.......2007-01-05

Maria Callas, as I understand it (I'm not a music expert), helped create a new interest in the bel canto tradition of Donizetti and Bellini at mid-twentieth century. This album represents those composers, plus many others as well.

Callas' range in choice of operatic material is great indeed. Selections on this CD run from Gluck to Donizetti to Bizet and Puccini. Her voice, uneven on occasion, does not define her importance. As noted, she helped spark a renewed interest in bel canto works. The irony is that she did not have great coloratura skills. In the selection from Lucia di Lammermoor, a trill is scarcely heard. Think a few years later, to Joan Sutherland, later still to Beverly Sills, and more recently to sopranos such as Angela Gheorghiu. They all have much better technique, trill well, and exhibit much more agile coloratura singing. But Callas was an important predecessor.

More important than technique is the passion that many heard in her voice and her presence on stage. This is a good introduction to the range of Callas' repertoire and a reminder of this fiery singer from decades ago.

Put together in evident haste, this collection is nevertheless a surefire, appetite-whetting starter kit both for the budding operaphile and for the simply intimidated. The samplings include some of the greatest voices from EMI's vaults: here you'll find the polar opposites Callas and Caballe, the golden wonder of Wunderlich and early Carreras, and a host of other singers who've made their stamp on this century. Emphasis is on the soprano and tenor range, while the lower voices are given short shrift, and the selections cleave predictably to standard Italian and French repertory (with an occasional surprise, such as an aria from Lalo's Le Roi d'Ys). Still, the nearly three and a half hours of music represented will make a ready convert of anyone who hasn't experienced the specially heightened, time-stopping expressivity--beyond the power of mere song--that is the aria's function and will likely spark a desire to explore the larger operatic context in several cases. And though the lack of a booklet with texts or at least bios of the artists is frustrating, this is a good place to begin for an overview of the mesmeric power extraordinary voices can wield. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Beautiful . . ........2001-10-27

If you love opera - this collection of some of the lovliest arias ever sung by artists from Caballe to Freni, from Delibes to Puccini - will inspire you. It is a wonderful gift for friends or for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Aria.......2001-08-03

In my small operetic mind, this set of Cd's has completely captured me for the Opera. I was a young and upcoming musician in my youth. I'v been around the block "as it were" with the Classics. This collection is indeed, the benchmark upon which all others would hope to aspire.

Congradulations EMI for an incredible vision of the greatest opeatic moments recorded.

Gosh what's next?

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate indeed.......2000-08-02

If you don't like the idea of buying whole operas, or if you're a newcomer to opera - this is an extremely good collection / introduction, worth every single cent. The collection features many of the worlds greatest singers, giving their interpretations of some of the world's greatest arias. The compilation itself is very tasteful and covers a wide range from Handel to early 20th century composers. You won't miss any important stuff from the history of opera, except maybe Wagner and the most modern operas - I'll come back to that fact later. The compilers have actually put some lesser known, although no less beautiful, arias here, that oftenly are neglected on ordinary opera-collections, why the name `ultimate collection' is more than correct in that aspect.

EMI have a enormous archive to pick their recordings from, and that of course makes it easy to find first rate interpretations of all the arias included in this collection, and I do think that almost all of the arias are wonderfully sung here. It may be possible to find better performances of single numbers here and there, but I've not yet heard a more complete, wellmatched, and so thrillingly sung collection.

Well then, is there nothing wrong with this compilation? You might find it a little odd that there are so many soloarias and so few duets, terzettos a.s.o, especially since the drama in operas oftenly is greater in numbers with more than one singer. You might also wish that some of the recordings had been a little more modern (most of these recordings were made during the 50's, 60's & 70's) giving place to younger performers that still are singing on the stages, but those are minor objections when the over all quality is so high.

The maybe strongest objection to this collection is that there is not one single part from any of Wagner's operas, and not any number sung in german, nor is there any parts from modern or russian operas. That may be a miss if you're interested in Wagner, russian and modern opera - on the other hand I think you should watch Wagners, russian and modern operas before listening to recordings of them - and if you've seen them and liked them you will probably buy the whole opera anyway. Therefor I still think that this is a extremely strong and complete compilation - the best I've run into so far. Easy to listen to, yet never banal.

4 out of 5 stars Brava Diva!.......2006-10-21

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings some of her most famous pieces on this 1983 compilation album from CBS Masterworks. Most of the recordings date between 1979-1983, with no real variance in sound quality, and the disc is offered at a bargain price. Real vintage Kanawa, simply superb.

Dame Kiri performs the "Der Kleine Sandmann" from Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel"; "Mi Tradi" from Mozart's "Don Giovanni"; and "Vissi D'Arte" from Puccini's "Tosca". Also featured are pieces from Walton, Faure, Verdi and Schubert among others.

If you are just beginning to collect Dame Kiri recordings, or are confused where to begin, this CD is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars a heavenly voice.......2002-09-26

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the most talented opera singers of today. She delivers vocal justice to every track on this recording, especially such favorites as "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Vissi d'arte." Her range is superb and her emotional expression is full of compassion. After hearing this CD, you will no longer think of opera as fat ladies trouncing around in helmets. Quite the contrary, these arias are simply sublime.

5 out of 5 stars She does "O Mio Babbino Caro" beautifully........2000-07-23

I first heard Kiri Te Kanawa doing "O Mio Babbino Caro" at the beginning of the movie "A Room with a View." Beautiful! I have never been able to track down that rendition but this one is as good. She also does a wonderful job of the Verdi piece from La Traviata.

This recording comes from the "real-time" Traviata presented on European television in June 2000. The idea was to heighten the drama by placing the opera in Parisian locations that still reflected the 1850s setting, and then having the soloists sing as plausibly as possible to a recorded soundtrack. The effect was somewhat bizarre--especially when it appeared that Violetta's cramped, little Act IV apartment had a mysteriously grand concert-hall acoustic. The recording, however, allows one to judge the performance on its musical--and not its televisual--merits, and on the whole it comes off rather well. The warm orchestral accompaniment is sensitive to the singers, but just occasionally lacks power. All in all, this is a good introduction to the opera and a neat tie-in to the TV production. --Warwick Thompson

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars A flop.......2004-02-03

A Violetta that sounds like a cheap imitation of Callas, Cura sounding crude and Panerai way over the hill. There are much better Traviatas out there than this one.

3 out of 5 stars good but not great.......2003-06-29

I just had the opportunity to see a rebroadcast of the TV film, and completely disliked the visual performance, including the staging, the camera work, and the acting. Now, if you close your eyes, and listen to the music, you might actually enjoy it. Although it is a stretch to compare it with the classic recordings of the same, it does hold its own, at least it is not bad. The exception is the elder Germont. I never had the chance to listen to Rolando Panerai when he was younger, but here at 75, his voice is stiff, lacks emotion, and contains too many rough edges to my liking. While I agree with one of the reviewers who dismisses the critical comment about this performance by pleading ignorance to the academic finer points, and focusses instead on the enjoyment aspect of the show, I am also in agreement with the author of that critical comment, why bother with this one, if you can't completely enjoy it.

OK, some of you may want to find a different presentation of the old classic, in that sense, you probably won't be disappointed by the musical portion of it (if you can overlook the one role I mentioned above), but for those of you looking for the DVD, I would suggest to stop that search right now, not because it is not available in stores, but because of its less than pleasing visual presentation.

The raison d'etre of this sound recording is the made-for-television event of broadcasting from Paris, purportedly made by the same crew that made the Tosca from Rome. While Tosca from Rome was a live performance, a grand artistic tour de force, this TV film was made in such an amateurish fashion, that it looks like the entire crew had a lobotomy after the first success. The direction, the use of cameras (angles, movement, etc.), as well as the acting evoked from the performers are horrendous. The under-the-table scene in Act I is unnecessary, and looks to be a copy from Boheme; the use of Steadycam (it is mounted on the cameraman, and his going and stopping give the feeling of discontinuity) gimmick is not much of an improvement from Dave Letterman's Monkeycam years ago; and the camera angle and zoom is very curious, the director seems to like to place obstacles, like tree leaves, tall grass, furniture, and other things, between the camera and performers. I was so distracted by his constant obscuring of Germont and Violetta's faces in Act II that I kept thinking "ticks, ticks, ticks" when they walked into the overgrown tall grass, and "will she scream if she finds a worm" when they kept walking into the hanging willow leaves. 8-)

I may appear to be a little cynical, but my point is that if it fails to capture the attention of the audience, the director failed his job. This production's visual part is full of unsuccessful experiments, it is painful to watch. So if you have to get this performance, get the CD version, but stay away from the video (get the Zefferelli version instead to see how it's supposed to be done).

      5 out of 5 stars La Traviata a Paris a wonderful experience.......2002-04-13

The finest la Traviata I have ever heard. Bold orchestration and deep rich vocals. Wonderful listening experience. It's a great CD for fledgling opera buffs who want to start with the best execution of the best composers.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, very well sung.......2002-04-12

So what if they overdubbed to make a good TV show... the singing is just fine. Not perfect, but Gvazava and Cura put on a very good show.

Remember that this beautiful music and drama was created as entertainment. Let's not get in the way of enjoying this fine performance with pointless academic refernces to other people who may have done it better. Lighten up folks!

Having vented all of that,I'm looking forward a release of the DVD version of this performance. The CD just is fine, but watching it as a full performance is even better. Just saw it broadcast by the CBC while in Toronto. Get the DVD, listen - watch, enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars angel music.......2001-08-24

level of recording and presentation beyond excellence. Couple Gura/Gvazava is a guarantee of full success. Please find me the DVD.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for a sublime movie.......2005-02-12

Zeffirelli's "Callas Forever" is an intimate portrait of the final years of the world's greatest soprano with an interesting twist. Maria is coaxed out of her retirement to act in operamovies (Being dubbed with her old recordings). She even finishes an entire movie (Carmen) before she realizes that this is against all her principles and resists further offers plus she asks for the Carmen-Film to be destroyed. So how is this soundtrack? It's a lovely mix of arias from Madama Butterfly and Carmen (of course) plus some very new music. Bittersweet and haunting it's a recording I wouldn't want to be without.
