Customer Reviews:
Opera Moms.......2005-11-29
This is a creatively organized recording. The theme: mother figures in opera, both good and bad. It is a thoroughly enjoyable CD with great selections from full-length opera recordings. The first tracks feature the radiant soprano Montserrat Caballe singing Lucrezia Borgia's final scene. Her rich, full lyric voice contained a motherly, queenly tone and she most famously portrayed the big, bad Italian mama who as history had it, conspired against her own husband and son. Only in the Donizetti opera she is redeemed by her maternal insticts and love. On track four, we find mezzo soprano diva Fiorenza Cossotto and tenor Placido Domingo singing the mother/son duet from Verdi's Trovatore. Azucena is a Gypsy mother who is bent on revenge against the wicked Count Di Luna, though it costs her sons's life. Domingo and Cossotto sing with burning intensity. This is taken from the RCA recording with Leontyne Price and Sherill Milnes, dating from 1970. On track 5, diva Leontyne Price sings the aria Senza Mamma from Puccini's lesser known Suor Angelica, about a nun who also happens to be a mother (this must have turned heads!). Leontyne sings with great vigor and passionate lyrical beauty. Coloratura soprano Zdislawa Donat sings the two famous coloratura arias from the evil Queen of the Night from Mozart's Magic Flute. The High F's she throws at us are lazer-sharp, though feathery light when compared to the Queens of the Nights of Christian Deutekom and Edda Moser as some critic wrote. But Donat is supported well by Maestro Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic.
Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele is another rare opera today. It is another account of the Faust story, most famous as Gounod's opera. The role of Marguerite is normally sung by a lyric soprano and some great Marguerites from Mefistofele have included Renata Tebaldi (opposite George London) and Montserrat Caballe (in the Norman Treigle, Placido Domingo recording. Leontyne sings the motherly Marguerite with great bravura. She has had a son by Faust but is under dark enchantment and despairs in the infamous Church Scene. Leontyne is further showcased in arias from Andrea Chenier and Un Ballo In Maschera, the latter one which she mastered wonderfully on a studio recording opposite American baritone Robert Merrill. As Madame Butterfly, Leontyne Price sings with passionate bravado. Her Butterfly is one of a kind and she can be heard on a studio recording dating from '62 under Leinsdorf.
Mother's Day At The Opera.......2005-05-12
Opera is full of colorful and interesting mothers. This recording showcases great arias by great artists portraying operatic mothers. From the vile to the noble here they are: 1)Azucena from Verdi's Il Trovatore sung by Fiorenza Cossoto. This mezzo soprano character is a Gypsy who has a vendetta against the Count Di Luna and achieves it at the end, to her own son's demise. The Queen of the Night in Mozart's Magic Flute: The unknown artist does not make a fine interpretation, but then again I've been spoiled by such sopranos as Edda Moser and Christina Deutekom as the Queen of the Night. This powerful nocturnal queen, whose daughter Pamina becomes an initiate of the Brotherhood of Sarastro along with Prince Tamino, is a vengeful, destructive and proud villainess. Her two arias are challenging coloratura showpieces- Der Holle Rache being the most electrifying. The mother in Suor Angelica is a nun, who has a dilemma in her hands but who loves her product of sin daughter nonetheless. Lucrezia Borgia was the notorious Italian power figure who is said to have poisoned her own son. In this album we are treated to the great performance of the role by Montserrat Caballe, long hailed as the finest interpretor of the role. Her love for her son comes too late as she accidentally poisons him in the last act during a dinner/feast. The rest of the arias are all well-executed and you can't go wrong with names like tenor Robert Merrill, Placido Domingo and other. Leontyne Price as Amelia in Un Ballo is also a feast for the ears.
