Customer Reviews:
Maestro Second-Best does well by Bruckner (in excellent sound).......2007-02-06
To British record collectors, Chandos is famous for its wide-ranging sonics, which capture orchestras in venues that sound like Wembley Stadium. There's room in the world for that kind of warm lushness, especially in Bruckner. Normally I don't seek out recordings by Neeme Jarvi. In my experience his concerts with the Boston Sym. were dreadful, but Jarvi has hundreds of recordings to his credit, and even though he's never best in class, he can rise to second-best.
Here I expected hi to be gruff, rough around the edges, but emotionally direct. Actually, he's considerably better. This Bruckner Eighth is propulsive and exciting. The London Phil. plays extremely well, as they once did under that great Brucknerian, Klaus Tennstedt. Jarvi is nowhere near as original, but he doesn't dawdle and apply false sensitivity a la Gunter Wand, and he has no religio-philosophical point to make a la Giulini. By far he excels the muddle-headed Barenboim, which leaves a batch of supreme interpretations (from Furtwangler, Karajan, and, strangley, Boulez) that Jarvi can't match.
For the time I was listening, Jarvi's lack of profundity didn't matter to me. On its own terms, shorn of nuance but hurtling forward, this is a compelling performance.
