Above all, Andrea Bocelli is a communicator, and what he communicates is emotion. The variety of his messages is as impressive as the power he brings to their expression. Love is hopeful in "La Luna Che Non C'e" and "Caruso"; unfulfilled and nearing desperation in "Il Mare Calmo della Sera," "Vivere," and "Qualcuno Non Mi Basta"; idealized in "Rapsodia" and the "Flower Song" from Carmen. Two different styles of religious devotion are heard in "Panis Angelicus" and "Ave Maria No Morro"; "E Lucevan le Stelle" and "Miserere" are songs of despair. Bocelli's tone is generally strong and well supported, from soft erotic whispers to piercing cries of sheer anguish, and when it takes on a rough edge, it usually seems to be deliberate, for expressive purposes. He mixes popular and classical material in a way that upsets fans of Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, and Cesar Franck--and, in fact, he is much more at home in popular music. But good classical material like this can survive popular treatment, and Bocelli may be attracting new fans to Tosca and Carmen. --Joe McLellan

From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype that's attached to him. Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts. The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie, convincing labels to take on more operatic projects. --Andrew Bartlett

Bias I Confess.......2007-07-06
I confess to loving Italian music and opera in addition to Rock & Roll, Country and music in general.
This music is good when you want to relax or have a lady over 40 you want to entertain.
An Italianized Englishman..........2007-06-01
Is the Devil incarnate." (Inglese italianato e un diavolo incarnate) Or so I've heard. I suppose the author (I read it in a copy of Machiavelli's The Prince) could be forgiven for not having heard Don Bocelli and Donna Brightman sing "Con Te Partiro" - can we now say Inglese italianata e un angelo incarnate?
The rest of the album is a collection of ballads, most of which suffer from weak or clashing instrumentals. An exception is "Macchine Da Guerra" which has a pleasant and comparatively strong piano accompaniment.
I'd like to thank Kenny McCormick of South Park, CO for turning me on to Don Bocelli.
Romancing the listeners.......2007-05-30
What a voice, it soars with the arias and bops with the more contemporary. Especially love the song about Caruso. Andrea is un cantante bello, un uomo bello! Turn this one up with the top down and let it sing you home.
Amazing!!!.......2007-05-18
I bought this cd again after losing my original copy that I bought the year it was released. Out of all my Bocelli cds this is my favorite. It has a good mix of classic opera with popera and really shows his abilities. I have used this cd to turn people on to opera and popera, and the results have been incredible! Once you hear him, you cannot deny his talent and passion. Simply AMAZING!!!
Andrea in the 90's.......2007-04-20
Andrea is incredible. His romantic poetry with music is unparalleled. The only downside to this album is the inescapable 90's feel.If you don't mind it,then buy this album. If you do,then buy 'Time To Say Goodbye'off iTunes and get Sogno,Andrea,or Cieli di Toscana.

Trashy reincarnation of his music.......2001-07-29
I saw this CD listed on Amazon last year and was very excited until I saw the tracklist. Basically, the whole thing is just the same songs over and over and over again, nothing new. Don't be fooled into thinking that a "best" collection like THIS contains any of Andrea's "greatest hits," like "Time To Say Goodbye" and "The Prayer." Instead, he puts songs that aren't really necessary for this project, like "Caruso" and "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera." Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mean the songs are horrible. I just mean that it's WAY TOO EARLY in Andrea's career for him or his Philips/Insieme S.R.L. to even THINK about getting this out into the Japanese market. They shouldn't buy it, and neither should we, because like I said it's all recycled material in such a way that he gets no credit.
Cup Half Empty.......2001-02-05
Per Amore is dissapointing for those wanting classical or regional favorites of love. The CD starts with this promise and does it well, but the many latter recordings are permiated with the current pop vocal formula. The creshendos are not emmotionally beleivable, the octive drops too frequent and accessible. The direction of the music seems more driven by new market considerations than Andrea's heart.
Most extensive Bocelli album, but...........2000-12-27
Okay, okay, I AM obsessed with Andrea and the song Per Amore. The material that highlights this whole album was taken from Romanza and Sogno, thus making this his most extensive "Greatest Hits" collection. It's just the lack of new material that really disappoints me. New fans who don't have a single one of his CDs and who might particularly want "the album with the most extensive line of material" might love this (be prepared to pay a lot of money). True Bocelli fans will love this album but will probably still wait (like I am) for more, more, more.
Wonderful but.......2000-10-01
I love Andrea Bocelli! I pre-ordered this CD and did not know what songs were there as they were not listed on this site at the time. The songs are absolutely wonderful BUT I have heard them all many times. I waited 4-5 weeks everyday, looking for this CD to come. I was very disappointed. I needed something new. If you don't have any of Bocelli's CDs, you will love it and are truly lucky to own this one. However, the CD was much too expensive (total about $33.00) for songs I already have. Sadly waiting for more.
I want an Andrea Bocelli Enhanced CD!!!!.......2000-09-17
Okay, so what if the material on his Japanese debut is the same material all over again? Andrea Bocelli, a singer with attitude, may not be the best singer in the world, but he's the #1 singer in my book. At least "Mai Più Così Lontano" got its way into here. Still, I want an Andrea Bocelli Enhanced CD, because I want to cry knowing that he doesn't have one.

Customer Reviews:
Bocelli at his best.......2007-03-04
"Il Mare Calmo Della Sera" significes Andrea at his best! I agree with what another reviewer said about this being a true Bocelli album before commercialism touched him. And even though you are able to find a lot of songs on this album on Romanza, keep in mind that many of the versions off this album are completely different! Some of these tracks are far more raw and show his voice off better then Romanza. Consider yourself lucky if you were able to obtain a copy of this CD before it went out of print. My grandmother received an original copy of it back in 1999 so I managed to talk her into letting me copy it for myself. Even though it's not an original CD, I truly treasure it as do I the man that sings it!
FANTASTIC!!!!!.......2003-07-11
It took me two years to track down a USED copy of this title hear at Amazon (I used the per order option to get it). Sugar Records ought to reissue this one imminently, if not sooner. Its worth it alone for the CUTE Italian Folk Song, Ava Marina No Morro; Bocelli brings this song such life with his earnest folksy singing and his ringing Tenor parts, Beautiful. Also This CD is worth it a second time for this version of Meserere, On it Bocelli does both the pop/blues part (zucceros part) and the Opera Part (Pavarottis Part), again an excellent job. There are a few songs that are on other releases, Rapsodia; La Luna Che Non C'e; and Caruso (all Excellent). And then it finishes off with 5 Opera Aries sung Live, Panis Angelicus; Ah La Paterna Mano; E Lucean Le Stelle; La Fleur Que Tu M'Avais Jetee; and L'Anima Ho Stanca. And a 6th live song called Songo (not the same as on the Songo CD). The Live songs show a great talent in the beginnings of his emergence, it is raw and emotional and beautiful. They are wonderful to listen to and compare just how far he has come; rising up to the top of both Opera and Pop fields. If you can get this CD; do it.
A Youthful, Earnest Bocelli, Without The Commercialism.......2002-09-07
I love this CD because I believe it was made before Andrea was such a huge success in America. To me it seems less commercial and more sincere than his later ones. The emotion, the passion he puts into the beautiful songs seems so genuine, so heart felt, perhaps a little less mechanical and contrived as necessarily happens when one becomes such a huge success, as he has done. The operatic songs at the end, sung in recital, with live applause, are a contrast to the huge concerts, with screaming fans, which appear on some of his CDs. I found this classy, intimate, and, as always with Bocelli, touchingly earnest in his desire to communicate his strong feelings about life and love.
I obviously reviewed this twice, but...........2000-09-20
....here I go again. Andrea Bocelli, a gorgeous-voiced tenor whom many people have surprisingly welcomed into their homes, does deserve a place in the wonderful world of music. This album was his debut, and when it takes off from the first track, it seems very deeply invigorating up to track 6. However, Andrea really has no business whatsoever putting six opera arias on the second half of the CD. No offense to the songs or to him, though. I've heard of "crossover" styles of that sort, but this album has entirely "new" songs and a little bit of opera, not previously sung pop songs and opera (such as in the case of Sarah Brightman's music: she became popular for her repeated trend of previously sung songs, with different arrangements, whilst Andrea has yet to continue his popular trend). This album Il Mare falls into that category. Since pop-crossover exists, I guess this is one of the first. And hey, not all that disappointing since he loves opera....
Several songs from ýRomanzaý; stronger on the latter.......2000-06-29
No offense to Andrea Bocelli, though. Four of the songs on this, his official debut album, appear on "Romanza," and to tell you the truth, I was ready to get this album and "Bocelli" in an attempt to make my Andrea Bocelli album collection complete. Since I already have "Romanza," though, neither this one nor "Bocelli" is really necessary.
