Some other reviewer once said "If you want to know what Benny Goodman was all about, you have to listen to the trio and quartet recordings". He is totally right. Despite having the best white swing band of the 30's, Goodman also recorded a string of records with his racially-integrated trio and quartet which become the birth of what we know as the modern "jazz combo". These recordings are amust for any jazz fan or musician. All the master takes, good remastering without going overboard and at a nice price. Essential for any big band collection.

Great buy. I puchased my copy for just $11 online - 2 disks and 47 tracks. Sure, you can pay more (much more) for the three disk set, but why? If the extra disk's worth of alternate takes and excellent liner notes are important to you, then go with the other set. On the other hand, if you're just looking for a couple of hours of good music for a reasonable price, I highly recommend the Definitive set. Sound quality very good considering that this music was recorded in the 1930s.

    If your a Met fan than save up and get the DCC hoffman remaster. It is SO worth it. This is such a staple of this genre, to miss out is a shame. Like missing a food group.

    There is not one song I even remotely dislike about this album. What can I say except that Master of Puppets rocks? The album starts off with a mellow opening to the first track, Battery. Then, all of a sudden, it goes into thrash mode and just kicks your a$$! This song practically defines thrash metal.

    Then we go into the legendary Master of Puppets, a song about the effects of drug abuse. This song would make a great song to celebrate Red Ribbon Week at your school...that is, if they do that sort of thing. That song is the most common favorite song among Metallica fans, and I can see why. From the heavy riffs, the solo, and everything else, that song has it all.

    Next up, The Thing That Should Not Be. Some say that this song shouldn't be on this album, but my question is "Why not?" It's deep, it's heavy, and it's haunting. What's not to like?

    Now we move on to the ballad of the album, Sanitarium. Metallica have been criticized for making ballads back when Ride the Lightning was released, but the people who criticized them really should think about why. Even if the ballads are softer than their other stuff, they still have their hardcore parts. Sanitarium changes from soft to hardcore at the point of Kirk's solo. So I guess you could say that song has a little something for everybody.

    We now move to Disposable Heroes, another thrash song about war. The lyrics are extremely deep and thought-provoking, and the guitar riffs are pure metal. Another awesome song.

    Now we move to the next track, Leper Messiah. I find this song to be underrated. I know it's not as thrashy as some of the other stuff on this album, but so what? It can still spit out some poetic lyrics, electric guitars, and crazy solo, can't it?

    Next up, Orion, a legendary instrumental. Cliff Burton's skill on the bass was definitely shown in this song. Plus, a band's ability to do instrumentals proves that they can make good music without poetry.

    We're coming down to the final track, Damage, Inc. If you look up "thrash metal" in the dictionary, you will see this song. Like Battery, it starts out slow and then all of a sudden goes into a full-on thrashfest! My personal favorite Metallica song.

    Overall, Master of Puppets is a must-have for any metalhead.

    i have listened to just about every Metallica album, but this one is by far the best. great guitars, awesome lyrics, and slammin drums. if you buy this album, you will want to buy all of the other Metallica albums. the BEST song on the cd is the title track, Master Of Puppets. it has some of the best guitars i have ever heard anyone play.

      It appears that with all these bargain boxes of Jazz cd's coming out the typical consumer sees price value and takes a chance..there are better sounding labels out there and my experience with Definitive Records,LoneHill Jazz,JSP and Proper Records have been positive and never felt beat by any of them.
      In the case of Definitive Records and this 4 cd set, exhausting the master takes of Satchmo's Decca sides for the time period of 1935-1939 (as well as the the additional 2 cd set covering the 1940-1949 Decca period issued as a separate release but same style of packaging), the sound and overall presentation is crystal.
      Informative liner and band notes are included.This label is really made for the Jazz aficionado and primarily the collector seeking hard to find quality releases...The label makes no bones and quite simply states that in it's honest approach .
      There are 6 cd's if you also include the 1940-1949 collection available as a 2 cd set...Wonderfully, also high resolution 24 bit.
      The music captures Armstrong at the tender age of 35-45 when he returned to the American studio after foreign travels and his great big band recordings of the early 1930's.History was still to be made.

      This is the first time I have heard Callas speak outside of operatic performance, and even in her normal speaking voice you Listen. It is amazing to hear this passionate teacher share her love of music, and in mid-sentence come out with examples of her singing - like a higher power.
      I highly recommend this to true music lovers and musicians.

      If you are a voice major, then buy this set. It is more instructional perhaps in that sense. But for true enjoyment? It is just not for me.

      Take the money you would spend on this set and buy the LA DIVINA CALLAS set. Well worth the money if you want to hear the divine Miss Callas. There are also numerous EMI classic sets out there for her opera performances that I think would be much more of an enjoyable listening experience than the Julliard recordings.

      This is a treasure recording! Totally an amazing! I'M THRILLED!!!
      My favorite part is the "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" lesson! It is interesting how Callas is teaching Baritone part and she is absolutely amazing! I cry almost everytime I listen to this track. You will learn a lot! A MUST have!

      Long acknowledged for its contribution to the teaching of singing, Callas at Juillard is indeed worth a listen. Recorded during her sessions at Juillard, Callas goes through the sung repertoire ranging from Mozart to Bellini to Verdi with both roles that she was famed for as well as roles that she had never sung. What is special about this record is that each session covering an aria is paired up with the same aria as performed previously by Callas if possible. This allows us to compare the differences that may have resulted in the gap of the performances. Callas shows us the insight she had gained as a student while she took a sabatical from the stage and takes this as an opportunity to impart her experience and knowledge to the students. Covering arias like "Non mi dir" from Don Giovanni, Norma's "Casta Diva" which was her calling card, to even the veil song for Princess Eboli in Don Carlos and even Rigoletto's aria, Callas reveals her natural instinct and understanding of roles and how they are to be sung. At a time while she was not in her vocal prime, Callas astounds when she accompanies the students demonstrating a phrase or two. Her voice still shows the beauty and tenacity that she was known for, at times matched that of her voice at its peak. Peppering the sessions with comments, she shows the students what is done and why it is done and at times, even shows her sense of humour. This recording is as precious as any can get and more so than any of her records, show Callas at her most relaxed and natural and thereby at her best. Combined with John Ardoin's book, this CD is unmatched for its value and worth as a study guide.

        The tribute to the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang's birth continues, and this two-disc set is perfect for those who want to like classical music and insist they can't. The 34 tracks sound familiar because they have been used in popular films, either as incidental music or as an important component of the score. And we're not just talking Amadeus, but films that you may be surprised used such memorable music ... Mission Impossible, There's Something About Mary, Runaway Bride, Trading Places, Miss Congeniality, The Living Daylights. The works are performed by the finest, including James Galway, Alban Berg Quartett, Riccardo Muti, Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Neville Marriner, Herbert Von Karajan and Martha Vineyard's Andre Previn. Pretty classy indeed.
