The Philadelphia Sound meets Strauss.......2006-08-19
Columbia was enormously successful selling 'the Philadelphia sound' to the record-buying public after WW II. I can remember this LP in Ormandy's heyday, the late Fifties and Sixties, as a huge sller. Himself a virtuoso violinist, Ormandy's strength lay in getting a luscious string sound, and although he doesn't have a Viennese touch, these aren't lumpish or mechanical readings. they dance and move along.
Don't expect to get giddy, however. Everything's just a touch cautious. You get the feeling of riding in a luxury car, all smothness and rich upholstery. In more seroius music, that gets cloying, but in Johann Strauss waltzes Ormandy produces a sense of plushness that's lovely.
