A Powerful and Exciting CD Set!.......2000-08-18

I am fairly new to classical music and have depended heavily on reviews to select what CDs to try. I ordered this newly-released one based on the contents and am very happy I did. The music is sharp and clear. When it swells to a dramatic moment, it takes your breath away! Featuring the masterful palying of E. Power Biggs and Anthony Newman among others, this 2 CD set is a great value for the price!

This disc recycles two different but complementary LP recordings, the first being a 1968 outing with the Gregg Smith Singers, the New York Brass and Percussion Ensemble, and organist E. Power Biggs, the second being a 1965 recording with André Kostelanetz and his Orchestra. Though the repertoire for both is fairly traditional carols, they make for strange listening now. The Gregg Smith Singers selections are often straightforward, except when Biggs's gimmicky organ intervenes with all sorts of effects that are deployed with the artistry of Fourth of July fireworks. Did we ever mistake Biggs for a musician? Kostelanetz's ultra-busy orchestrations are almost comically souped up with cushy strings, ringing brass, and more harps than you'd ever want to hear. One saving grace is the underrecorded soprano Phyllis Curtin, who sings a lovely version of "O Holy Night." Also on hand is the St. Kilian Boy Choir, which has an unusually robust sound. --David Patrick Stearns

This is a wonderful Christmas anthology, with legendary performers, a bright little pipe organ, and a sparkling small brass ensemble. In many other Christmas albums, huge choirs and orchestras overwhelm the listener; here the 2 small choirs & their accompaniment are in perfect balance. With excellent clarity and timing, the songs are crisp and delightful! They bring back the joy & idealism of Christmas that I loved as a child.

Album Description

Some of the best music written for the oboe for the past 100 years, these works were commissioned for this album and are heard here on their first recordings. The works are very melodic and listenable. Muradian's writing "might be characterized as late Baroque filtered through early Romantic, as if Mendelssohn had come across a volume of Armenian melodies." (International Record Review) Kosins, like the Muradian, "is certainly attractive music." (Fanfare) The Biggs Dance Suite is a masterpiece for oboe and string trio. La Traille is an exciting composer, not previously heard on recordings. Peter Christ has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the major movie studio orchestras. Peter Christ Has Done It Again!.......2001-12-04

Peter Christ, oboist and president of Crystal records, has done it again with this new release of heretofore unrecorded music for oboe, entitled "Rendezvous and Dreams". His championing of 20th century music takes shape here very nicely with four works for oboe, three of them with string accompaniment, one with piano. As the pieces appear on the CD, the quality of the works seems to get better and better. The opening work by Armenian composer, Vazgen Muradian, strongly rooted in 18th century style, is the least individual of the works represented on this disc but has enough attraction to hold one's interest.

The gentle romanticism of Martin Scot Kosins' "Rendezvous and Dreams" provides a welcome change of direction. Oboe and piano relate quite naturally and expressively in these five short pieces.

John Biggs, well-known Southern California composer, wrote his Dance Suite for Peter Christ and Crystal Records; its musical language, though contemporary, is quite accessible and leaves one wanting more. The four seamless movements conclude with an energetic and exhilarating Grecian dance in septuple meter. (Biggs' chosen instrumentation of oboe, violin, viola and cello parallels that of the Mozart's timeless quartet in F Major.)

Gregory La Traille's three-movement work, Quintet for Oboe and String Quartet, impresses with its fine sense of continuity and energy. His music deserves to be heard more widely on recordings.

In all respects this is a fully professional recording in terms of sound, musical content and interpretation.

Fiedler the pops conductor is well-known and extensively documented on records. Much less familiar and very much worth knowing is Fiedler the pioneer of chamber orchestra programming in modern America. His sinfonietta in the 1930s introduced many music-lovers to compositions--mostly 18th-century, occasionally modern--that would become wildly popular a quarter-century or more later, after the twofold revolution of tape recording and long-playing records had vastly expanded our musical tastes.
