Customer Reviews:
Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06
Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.
Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.
Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.
"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.
The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.
I would recommend this to any classical lover.
If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.
The man was a genius.
This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08
After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.
THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12
I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.
SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???
THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.
OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.
Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23
I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.
i am dumb.......2004-07-01
And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

lanking two major works from an earlier generation of American composers are two shorter ones by contemporaries whose command of orchestral textures and hues make for a stimulating program. Christopher Theofanidis' Rainbow Body opens quietly, and builds to a shattering brass-and-percussion-led close, fully exploiting the rich colors of Atlanta's crack orchestra. Jennifer Higdon's Blue Cathedral, which closes the disc, is a finely textured exploration that, in her words, represents an imaginary journey "through a glass cathedral in the sky." It has a soaring quality that captivates, and while not as melodic as Theofanidis' piece, is as compelling in its own way. Spano excels in the Barber and Copland works too; the Barber Symphony No. 1, played with coiled energy, the Copland Suite from Appalachian Spring, full of atmosphere and momentum. Both are among the best available. This brilliantly engineered disc is a winner. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
blue catherdral.......2005-09-06
This is beautiful music and well performed. I purchased it to have a copy of Blue Cathedral, which is an extraordinary piece of contemporary music. My only criticism of the CD is technical in that some places on the CD do not pick up the audio well. This is only for a few bars and does not diminish the fact that the CD is a winner.
Surprisingly Sloppy.......2005-06-30
I won't comment too much on the new pieces here, but the performance of the Barber Symphony is surprisingly sloppy. The wind playing is really quite bad - check out the cracks in the bassoon and clarinet in their solos in the fugue or the intonation of the famous oboe solo. I'm frankly surprised that Spano put up with this type of execution. For a truly gorgeous rendition of the oboe solo, try Alsop's Naxos disc of this symphony. While the "big" moments sound good, with prominent brass, healthy and in tune strings, it's during the quieter moments that the "cracks" show, especially upon repeated listening. The Higdon piece has wonderful moments, and I like her music in general but must say this isn't the most impressive piece from her I've heard. The Theofanidis is simple and, if you like music that avoids counterpoint or harmonic motion, beautiful. I find that it doesn't reveal a whole lot of new facets on repeated listenings.
Awesome.......2005-03-15
Every once in a while, after sorting through the seemingly endless piles of contemporary American composers, you find a new composer that restores your faith in American music, which often seems to be a lost cause.
This cd is one of those. Theofanidis comes forth as a brand new, amazingly talented composer whose music is simply breathtaking. Rainbow Body is a true masterpiece. Beginning in the low registers with a bass clarinet and cello solo, Thoefanidis moves into the violas and then up into the violins and upper registers of the orchestra. Theofanidis finds the PERFECT balance between modern and romantic styles, masterfully transitioning between sublime chord structure to more contemporary polyrhythmic styles (trombone soli section with bongos). He eventually works up to a powerful, blissful climax and ends the piece. Although just over 10 minutes long, this piece alone is worth buysing the cd over.
But you also get old favorites, Copland's beautiful Appalachian Spring Suite, Barber's powerful 1st symphony, and, although it wasn't my favoite, a new piece, Higdon's Blue Cathedral.
To summarize, buy it now while you have the money. Or get it from a merchant (like me) where it is much cheaper.
OK, but not great........2005-01-05
An OK but not great CD. If I had a choice, I'd rather have my $17.98.
Very pretty, somewhat boring.......2004-12-01
This recording of the new works by Theofanidis and Higdon is first rate. Great performances, and nice to hear along side the Copland, which stands out as the real masterpiece. Mind you, Theofanidis and Higdon are obviously really talented composers.
I like new music. I like beautiful music. And I don't usually mind if the new music I hear is beautiful or ugly, has a tune, or not. What matters is that I am pulled in, and not lulled in with cliches or pandering.
The Theofanidis seemed to be much more interesting to listen to than the Higdon. His sense of orchestral color is very strong. But overall, their music is very pretty, and somewhat boring. Get this to hear that great Copland: it is the piece that on this CD that pulls you in to listen. I know this piece is not the new piece on the CD, but it really stands the test of time against the more recent works.

Virtuoso Players Gild the Lilly.......2007-04-19
Reviewers who write that these are fine musicians playing lousy arrangements are correct. That's it exactly. The slower cuts are better than the up-tempo ones. Apparently this CD is a big hit with bagpipe tooters. So be it. The rest of us should pass it by or purchase it used.
Keep looking - there is much better stuff than this.......2005-10-05
This album is a perfect example of how a bad arrangement can ruin great music despite the best efforts of great musicians. Everything about this recording is right; selection, performers, sound engineering. Except that the tracks are horribly over-arranged with all sorts of distracting, subtracting variations and trite bridging passages.
Diasppointed.......2005-07-12
I am not saying the music is bad or the quality is lacking, because it is not. If you are looking for traditional music played in the traditional way, then this CD is not for you. It is like listening to everyone's interpretation when they sing the "Star Spangled Banner". There is no need to jazz things up that were not written to be. The titles are old but the variations on the score have a lot to be desired if you wanted to hear these songs played the way they were meant to be played.
This album is an absolute disaster.......2005-06-08
It's said that music soothes the savage beast, but bagpipes will do just the opposite. They will make the hair on your neck stand on end, your blood pressure go through the roof and prepare you to go to war. This album does neither.
The one piece which should most strongly produce the desired result is Scotland the Brave. In this album it is three minutes and twenty seven seconds, the first minute an ten of which are dedicated to fanfare. After that an orchestra plays some stylized version and, I think, I can detect a hint of bagpipes in there somewhere. When one has heard it done "correctly", one can recognize this as a total disaster.
Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has a version that is just about right. (And that selection gives one the ability to listen to a sample. I can see why this one doesn't!)
Take My Advice, I'm Only Tryin' to School Ya -.......2004-07-07
I bought this album based on the rave reports of the other reviewers, and could NOT be more pleased with the result. Although not Scottish, I am a long-time bagpipe lover, and this album evokes visions of the Black Watch and other highland pipers moving through their intricate paces. The music is an aural feast, and the sound quality is excellent. I keep it in the CD player in the car and find that a quick drive or a long commute both become pleasures when I'm listening to it. Take my advice - if you have even a slight interest in pipes, drums or brass, you're going to love this album. (This is the first time I have ever written a review; it's a very compelling album!)

This is music that will stick to your ribs.......2004-12-11
I first heard the op. 6 Toccata - a real show piece - in a MIDI rendition by Serge Winitski, and that impelled my to buy this disk. I have now been listening to all of these incredible pieces at work for several weeks running. The subtleties still seem inexhaustible. The instrument, performance, and recording are beautifully balanced. I have finally had to break away intentionally - like getting up early at a feast - to make sure I can return many times to this beautiful place.
The definitive recording.......2003-05-24
Other than the recording in 1967 (now available on CD) of Durufle's "Prelude and Fugue on the name Alain" as performed by his wife, Mdme. Durfule-Chevalier, there has never been a good performance of the complete works of Durufle. That has changed with Todd Wilson's disc. For such a small instrument, Wilson selects registrations that allow the rich harmonics to be heard with clarity. The overtones alone on a section of the "Veni Creator" will make your speakers rumble. There was a great deal of research done to make this CD possible, including an understanding of the kind of instrument that Durufle himself wanted to have his music performed on. Durufle's music moves, is electifying, is mystical (based on Gregorian Chant), and horrifying. He was such a master and so meticulous that this CD contains ALL of his published organ works. This is a CD best enjoyed late at night with the lights down and the headphones on so you can hear the mechanics of the instrument and hear the overtones correctly.
Celestial, spiritual, emotionally earth-shattering.......2001-02-12
Maurice Durufle's organ music is in my opinion the best ever written for the instrument. It cannot be compared with any other organ music and transcends its French heritage to find a unique cross-cultural beauty. Durufle has managed to take advantage of the full capability of the organ and write six of the most spiritually and emotionally moving pieces of music you will ever hear.
That being said, everything else about this recording is just as wonderful as the compositions. The recording itself and the microphones placements are by far the best I've ever heard on a CD of organ music. The Schudi organ at St. Thomas Acquinas Church in Dallas Texas has got to be the best organ in the world for Durufle. I prefer it even over recordings of Durufle I've heard played on Cavaille-Coll organs.
Todd Wilson's playing leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. Todd is a wonderful man who once, out of sheer kindness, thanked me for coming to one of his recitals (that featured Durufle and the Reubke Sonata). He is more than up to the task that these very technically difficult works present and transcends the challenge of playing the right notes. His tempos are energetic and his playing is deeply, if not obviously, emotional. The registrations here are impeccable and bold-they range from the solo 8' flute at the very beginning of the CD to the full organ at the final chord of the magnificent Toccata.
This recording simply has to be heard to be believed. It's a stunning achievement for everyone involved in its making, from the engineers to the performer. It is a treasure for the whole organ community that everyone should experience.
Simply Fantastic.......2000-01-19
Todd Wilson performs masterfully at the keyboards of the SCHUDI organ at St. Thomas Aquinas, Dallas, Texas. His flawless presentation of the complete works of Maurice Durufle shows the versatility of the instrument on which he plays and brings to life the music of the French master. This recording opens the world of organ music to the amateur, and will send chills up the spine of the afficianado.

Ballet for Band.......2003-12-05
These Mercury "Living Presence" recordings were a very special treat when they first appeared on vinyl.
First of all, it was an opportunity to hear music from the ballet, "Pineapple Poll," that conductor/composer Sir Charles Mackerras created from tunes in various Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. There have been subsequent recordings of the full score, including at least one by Mackerras himself, but this suite is arranged for concert band and is given a first-rate performances by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. For those of us who love Gilbert and Sullivan, hearing some of the familiar songs in instrumental versions is a special treat. We might even be tempted to sing the words to the songs we remember. In many ways, the story of the ballet takes the best elements of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, which followed a definite, very successful formula in the late nineteenth century.
The master orchestrator Ottorino Resighi (1879-1936) arranged some of the late music by the master operatic composer Rossini for a special ballet, "La boutique fantastique," sometimes translated, "The fantastic toy shop." Many of these tunes were never published or performed in Rossini's lifetime; they were among the works Rossini wrote during his "retirement" in Paris, which he often referred to as "sins" of his old age. There are stories that Rossini even wrote tunes for his dog! In any case, Rossini continued to be a composer of memorable, delightful tunes and Respighi wonderfully arranged and orchestrated them. This is a very spirited, very enjoyable band arrangement of the music.
The ballet music from Charles Gounod's "Faust" was an essential ingredient of the classic opera. As with any composer writing for the Paris Opera House, Gounod HAD to include a ballet, if only to please the members of the Jockey Club, who "patronized" the ballerinas who danced in the operas. Anyway, Gounod produced a number of memorable tunes for the ballet sequence, some of which are appropriately diabolical for an opera about the devil and his tempting of Faust. The band arrangement is a real treat and the Eastman musicians give it their best.
I haven't heard the band arrangements of Wagner's music. I know that John Philip Sousa sometimes included such arrangements in his band concerts and, no doubt, Fennell has given the music its due. Wagner wrote extremely well for brass anyway, so much of his music lends itself to such arrangements.
These performances are part of the continuing series of Mercury "Living Presence" recordings in outstanding digital remasterings. The original recordings spanned the years 1951 to 1968 and the vinyl releases were much desired and valued by record collectors over the years. Having them on compact discs assures that music-lovers in years to come will continue to enjoy these legendary performances.
Highly balanced and rich sound typical of Eastman.......1999-11-08
This in a fine CD. The Wagner pieces are rich, superbly balanced in the lower brass and horn sections (most notably). Furthermore, the Respighi La Boutique Fantasque, is a sleeper. One most often thinks of the "Pines" as the only symphonic band epic here. The ensemble does a great job with dynamics/contracts, a very interesting interpretation. I do prefer the impact of a "full" symphonic band versus an ensemble however in Elsa's Procession. The only CD/recording that I would suggest as an alternative would be in the University of Illinois Symphonic Band collection. It would give Eastman a run for the money, but you have to contact UI direct. You can't find the band recordings any more and therefore Eastman, as the most prolific symphonic training institution for brasses/winds, can't be beat in most cases.

Neglected Classics Remembered.......2003-11-12
I've been reading about Hoagy Carmichael and listening to his songs and music. My research brought me here.
These selections are generally meditative in character, though John Alden Carpenter's "Sea Drift" does contain a bit of flash. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings", the only workhorse here, receives a loving performance. Thomas Canning's warmth filled "Fantasy on a Hymn Tune of Justin Morgan" is somewhat reminescent of Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" and is a gem.
Closing out this program is another gem -- Hoagy Carmichael's suprizingly delightful selection from his "Johnny Appleseed Suite" -- warm, lyrical, rich, hopeful. Why the entire work has not been recorded, here or elsewhere, is a mystery. This six minute selection makes me want to hear the entire twenty minute work. The full score does exist at Indiana University's Hoagy Carmichael Collection.
The performances and sound quality of this recording are top notch. This is the only Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra recording I own and I must say they are fabulous! The ISO and Leppard are to be applauded for recording these neglected American classics. This is a most welcome compilation!
Very Enthusiastic.......1999-12-21
This is a very lovely collection of underplayed and under appreciated American works. I concure with the other reviewers. Leppard leads the Indianapolis Symphony in some sumptuous playing of these tender but emotionally charged works. Especially the Fantasy on a Hymn Tune which is deftly performed. If your are looking for an alternative to Ives and Schuman, this is a great disk to expand your horizons.
Excellent Performances from this smaller American Orchestra.......1999-10-24
This recent release from Decca Records has some of the familiar but also relatively unknown American works. The recorded sound is quite lovely, a very warm string sound, and some charming solo playing, especially coming from the English Horn player in the work by Hoagy Carmichael. In a era when most recordings and artistic attention is awarded to the largest American orchestras, having a chance to hear what some of the smaller and lesser known ensembles in the USA can do is quite amazing and well worth having available. Many of these works have never been recorded before, and they as a collection represent a slice of America that many people having been yearning for and have been missing. HATS OFF TO THE INDIANAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR THIS PROJECT!
Exquisite.......1999-08-15
American Dreams is a perfect title to this wonderful CD from the Indianapolis Symphony. With the exception of the Barber Adagio for Strings, the CD presents American Romantic masterworks that are rarely played and recorded. Leppard and his orchestra play the sweet melodies with the sincerety characterized by the state with which they are from, America's heartland state of Indiana. The most famous of the pieces recorded, the Barber, is given a new interpretation that does not allow the music's intensity to overwhelm. The most wonderful piece on the CD is Gershwin's Lullaby for strings - called Gershwin's first classical piece - is absolutly breathtaking. If this program were played at their summer venue at Conner Prairy, it would make for one incredible evening of music; therefore, if you are looking for music under the stars of an Indiana Summer from your home, this is the CD to buy.

Customer Reviews:
One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13
This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.
This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'
As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.
Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.
I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.
There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.
This is a truly wonderful recording.
One of the best sets of organ works.......2005-02-20
This is a superb set of organ works. Strongly recommended.
Mystic!.......2003-12-28
The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.
By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06
I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.
To be fair..........2003-04-04
The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

Here's a Symphony of Psalms that successfully captures the spirit and letter of the work--reverence, jubilation, and celebration, as well as specifics of orchestral color and texture. Boys' voices--supposedly Stravinsky's original choice--contribute their share to the bright choral timbre, an effect that works very well. We also get first-rate performances of the Mass and the rarely recorded Canticum sacrum. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Stravinsky's Byzantine Style.......2005-07-07
One aspect of the founder of modernism that gets little press is his deep faith rooted in the Russian Orthodox Church. Stravinsky's ballets use the savage irregular rhythms and epigrammatic melodies of Russian folk song. The sacred choral works featured on this disc are "Russian", too, but theirs is the Russianism of icons, mosaics, and the Byzantine liturgy. The liner notes speak of the miraculous suspension of time in the slow final section of the SYMPHONY OF PSALMS; indeed, it could be described as an icon in sound. The Mass for chorus and winds is pseudo-medieval and incantatory, while Canticum Sacrum shows Stravinsky moving confidently into serial technique. The Westminster Choir and the London Sinfonia give all this music justice with warm, rich, and committed performances in a resonant, churchy acoustic. (The performance of the PSALMS is a perfect complement to more overtly "concert" renditions.) An extraordinary sampler of Stravinsky's sacred music.
Miraculously Well-Prepared Choir.......2003-04-21
I agree with Mark Swinton here, that both the choir and the orchestra are brilliant in the Symphony of Psalms. I prefer this recording to the recent-ish Boulez recording, partly because the choir maintains MUSICALITY (sorry for the all-caps there, but there are a couple of near-shrieks in the Boulez which still haunt me) through the whole piece, partly because the wonderfully-voiced chords sound so terrific. This is one of those pieces which, in order to bring forth true excellence in performance, requires a conductor who understands both choir and orchestra; and this is where O'Donnell outpaces Boulez.
The closest thing I have to a quarrel with the chorus is, the tenors are a little hesitant when they come in with "Ne sileas" (which is a shade ironic, since the text means, "Be not silent" ....) But that is a small moment; overall, the choir are fantastic.
One should mention in passing that the treble parts are sung by boys, which accords with the composer's wishes. The score bears the legend: "The choir should contain children's voices, which may be replaced by female voices (soprano and alto) if a children's choir is not available."
(Which makes me wonder if, when Koussevitsky premiered the piece in Boston, he made use of a boys' choir ... certainly the Archdiocese of Boston has an excellent choir school.)
Like Boulez, O'Donnell does not take the coda to the last movement as slowly as Stravinsky's revision demands ... but O'Donnell makes less of a rush of it than does Boulez. (But then, of course, since Stravinsky's own recording of the Symphony of Psalms disregards his own revised tempo marking there, the composer himself set a doubtful precedent.)
Excellent notes by Ivan Moody (himself a fine composer) explore the complex interrelation of Stravinsky's return to the Russian Orthodox faith, his composerly predilection for setting the Latin language, and the decision to set the Catholic Mass (since he wanted to write a liturgical piece, accompanied by instruments).
This is a wonderful performance of the Mass, which (for all its very different sound world) is actually on about the same temporal scale as the Palestrina Miss Papae Marcelli. The accompaniment (an ingenious double quintet, of double reeds and cylindrical-bored brass -- no smooth clarinets, nor any sweet-toned horns) is masterfully written, and pure Stravinsky ... there are moments which recall the Symphonies of Wind Instruments (which, considering that the closing chorale of the Symphonies was written in honor of Debussy on that composer's death, has something of a solemn, quasi-religious character).
Where the Symphony of Psalms is clearly a concert work, and the Mass is designed for liturgical use (i.e., as music to accompany an actual celebration of the Mass -- designed for this, though such use of the piece has been exceedingly rare) ... the wonderful Canticum Sacrum is somewhere in between. It is impractically monumental for ordinary church use, yet its ingeniously assembled text is more of a sermon than it is a concert statement. The Canticum has striking points of contact with Stravinsky's ballet, Agon -- as we should perhaps expect, from the circumstance of Stravinsky's writing the ballet in the period from December 1953 to April 1957 (the Canticum Sacrum was composed in 1955 and published in 1956).
Perhaps the surprising thing is, for all its being a serial composition (though Stravinsky's adoption of serialism was free, and highly personal ... he uses several series in the Canticum, for example, and not all of them are "atonal", twelve-note series ... some are modal pitch-collections), Stravinsky's harmonic ear makes itself everywhere evident, and for all its being a good deal stranger, in terms of pitch organization, than the Firebird, there is a sense in which the textures and harmonies are often very close to early Stravinsky in spirit.
In fact, it sounds more tonal than it is (if this does not seem an absurdity). It is harder to sing right, than the ease with which this choir negotiates the work, would suggest. This is an extraordinary disc.
Mark Swinton is also perfectly correct, that these performances are superior to the documents Stravinsky himself managed to leave. This may well be the definitive performance of the Canticum Sacrum for some time to come; and it is a work which deserves greater recognition.
Special and Sacred.......2000-05-02
Stravinsky's sacred music marks him out as a true original, and on this CD the Westminster Cathedral Choir (as is so often their way) make a strong case for some of his better known cantatas and miniatures in the genre.
The "Symphony of Psalms" opens the recording: this is a very palatable introduction and the unique sound of the Westminster Cathedral Choir is absolutely perfect for the nuances set out in the work.
This is followed by the Latin versions of "Three Sacred Choruses." These are lovingly rendered, and in listening to them one can well imagine them being sung in candlelit, austere Orthodox chapels. The "Mass" is a fine liturgical work on the order of the motets, and here the City of London Sinfonia shines just as brightly as in the "Symphony." Closing off the disc is the serial composition "Canticum Sacrum," one of the most unusual and yet powerful religious statements Stravinsky made through music- not the easiest piece to listen to perhaps, but certainly full of intriguing symbolism and brilliantly crafted.
This recording pairs off Stravinsky's sacred works with one of the aptest group of performers to create a wonderful and very comprehensive insight into Stravinsky's choral writing. It is to the credit of James O'Donnell, the Cathedral Choir and of course the CLS that everything comes off so smoothly - smoother in fact than Stravinsky's own readings of these works years earlier (many of which are also available). A meritorious CD, one that will provide interest and provoke thought for quite some time after hearing it. Recommended.

This generously programmed disc provides excellent value and outstanding performances of both major and lesser-known masterpieces of French choral music. The Fauré Requiem has been recorded many times, and several excellent versions of the original orchestration are available on disc. This one is among them, owing to John Eliot Gardiner's experience and perfectionist mastery of details overlooked by less-successful choral conductors. The real bonus here is the inclusion of the popular but very difficult Debussy and Ravel chansons, and the rarely heard but eminently worthy little part songs by Saint-Saëns. These pieces are a lesson in how to achieve maximum effect with the simplest materials. -- David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Gardiner Does Faure.......2006-03-11
Faure's Grecian, pastel-shaded Requiem works well with the Gardiner steamlined treatment, and Faure's unconventional original scoring - with violins omitted except for a solo violin - is different and refreshing. It makes one wonder if perhaps Faure was beginning to see a way out of the obligatory gray, massed orchestral sound of the 19th century, just as he found modal chord progressions as a way out of the exhaustion of the functional tonal system.
Very sensitive and beautiful period instrument recording.......2006-02-01
This is an exquisite performance of Fauré's great Requiem and it is one of my favourite recordings by Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique - even though their numbers are low in this recording. Gardiner uses the original chamber version of the work by the composer. The Monteverdi Choir is very good, as always, and it is nice to hear countertenors in the choir in this work. Childrens voices augment the Monteverdi Choir.
Catherine Bott sings with great feeling and purity. Listen to her Pie Jesu and you will buy this recording. Gilles Cachemaille is very good French baritone and I always enjoy his contributions to recordings.
Along with the Gardiner / Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique recordings of the Requiems of Verdi and Brahms, this is a fine recording to own. You'll probably never need to consider another recording after you've heard this one. Lovers of HIP will be enthralled and those who aren't normally attracted to that approach will be very pleasantly surprised.

Gardiner surprises again.......2005-02-28
Perhaps we should just stop being surprised by John Eliot Gardiner, and begin to consider that perhaps there is no music, of any period, forces, or nationality, that cannot benefit from his transparent, lucid approach.
The Best rendition of this work... HAND'S DOWN!!!.......2003-04-15
This recording by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, is by far the best recording of this work available, and for various reasons.
1) The original orchestration of the Requiem, with full sections of Violas Cellos and Basses, but with only 1 solo violin; making the strings maintain an extra dark sound that is really invegorating.
2) The practically perfect performance of the Montiverdi Choir - arguably one of THE finest choirs in the world. Perfect balance, blend in all senses of the work.
3) Magnificent soloists capturing the very essence of what Faure was trying to accomplish - Notably the performance of Cathrine Bott in the Pie Jesu. Sweet, angelic, with NOT A LOT OF VIBRATO - which for some sopranos it is almost insulting for them to tone down the vibrato, as if to interfear with their virtuosity... Bott sings this with extreme delicacy, and in perfect context with the rest of the work, encapsulating the Requiem as it was ment to be.
These 3 qualities in the same recording is first of all extremely rare, and secondly it brings forth Faure in a completely new context.
This is truely a magnificent recording of Faure's Requiem, with all the velvety textures presented as smooth as milk choclate! A true model to our artform.

Maurice Duruflé. Complete organ works.......2006-12-30
Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) who is well known for his Requiem, has a very attractive repertoire for organ. Beside that his works are quite briefs, musical expression is always pleasant to hear.
Two highlights on this CD : the Suite opus 5 (track 1-3) especially in the Toccata, and the Prelude and Fugue on Alain opus 7 (track 12-13). Both better known as concert pieces, for their brightness in style and execution. A very interesting piece, Chant donné - Hommage à Jean Gallon (track 4) is an interesting short and not so well known piece that worth the listening.
Soft registration and expressive play by Friedhelm Flamme make theis CD a sort of tribute to the excellence of composition by Duruflé.
Very accurate recording, choice of repertoire and meticulous execution make togother a summit in recorded organ music.
Exquisite Works, Exquisite Playing on a Beautiful New Organ.......2004-06-25
I am an almost complete neophyte when it comes to the organ music of Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986). I've heard only one of these pieces in recital as far as I can recall; that was 'Prélude et fugue sur le nom d'Alain, Op. 7,' played by Duruflé's widow, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier, toward the end of her life. I later heard it played by the very fine organist at my church. But the other works here are terra incognita for me, although, having sung the 'Requiem' recently, the musical language was in general quite familiar to me. That said, I must try to contain my enthusiasm for having made the discovery of this music. And since I've not heard other recordings or performances, I have nothing to compare them with.
Duruflé wrote slowly and carefully and did not leave very much music. This disc contains ALL of his organ music. One wishes he had written (or preserved) more. The two big pieces here are the early Suite, Op. 5, and the 'Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié sur la thème du "Veni Creator", ' Op. 4. The Toccata in the former, reminding one of Gigout's famous Toccata, and the Choral varié in the latter are particularly memorable, and expertly played by organist Friedhelm Flamme. There are a number of much smaller pieces, most memorable of which are the 'Chant donnée - Hommage à Jean Gallon,' exquisite for its short 1 1/2 minutes, and the previously mentioned Prelude and Fugue on the name of [Jehan] Alain. Characteristic of Duruflé writing is the extremely subtle mix of colors; he was very careful to prescribe registrations and there are certainly some organs that cannot supply the color required. The organ here, a new Mühleisen (of Strasbourg) Organ installed in 2000 at the Stiftkirche in Bad Gandersheim, Lower Saxony, is perfectly suited, it sounds to me, for the delicacy of Duruflé's music.
I wish I could describe the effect Duruflé's style has on me; it is both exquisitely wrought and delicate, and at the same time highly emotional (in that oh-so-French way); it has much the same effect on me that the Ravel of, say, 'L'Enfant et les sortileges' or the Satie of 'Socrate' does. I've been playing this disc in my car and at home for a couple days and can't seem to get enough of it. I have been playing the audio CD layer of this hybrid SACD disc and the sound is exemplary; I can only imagine how it would be in SACD sound.
Strongly recommended.
