This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Forget what they SAY.......2003-11-10

Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

Most Aggravating Album in the World!.......2002-05-26

This CD is the first thing I ever returned to Amazon. It is an inferior product--selections cut off abruptly before the end, volume fades and returns in the middle of a cut...production values are pure schlock here. Maybe I should have expected as much from such a sophomoric title.

A fair introduction to Classical Music.......2001-03-03

I purchased this CD because I am new to Classical Music and thought this would be a good introduction CD. There is some wonderful music on this CD. The only problem I have with this CD is every other track is Opera of one form or another. As a new listener I found that after the Opera tracks I felt I had been yelled at and it was a distraction to the other music contained on the CD. I now know to hit the skip button on my CD player just about every other track. I only gave it 3 stars because I felt put off by the vocal tracks. I believe that when someone is new to Classical Music they do not think of Opera. If you don't mind hitting the skip button a lot or if you like Opera this CD is for you!

Great for Beginners.......2000-07-14

This is a nice recording for folks who don't know much about classical music, and would serve as a wonderful introduction. It covers centuries of great music in a very listener-friendly format. I am sure that I will use this CD in my music classroom. For a seasoned classical music lover, however, the CD proves a bit frustrating, including only segments of masterworks (not even the entire movement of the Holst). I bought the CD for a few recordings, which I truly enjoy and make the CD a worthwile purchase. But I found (and I think that most classical musicians will find) that I already had many of these works in their entirety.

This is a fine collection of classical songs for those that have little experience with classical music. Howver, I truly love it.

This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

A whistling wonder.......2007-01-04

I ordered this cd as inspiration for my African Grey parrot. (no kidding) I adopted him a couple of months ago and his first family taught him some basic tunes. I ask you, how many times do I have to hear the 'wolf whistle'? While he's hopefully absorbing some new, more challenging tunes, I'm enjoying listening to familiar scores whistled, accompanied by a piano.

The Other Ralph Vaughan Williams.......2000-10-18

Ralph Vaughan-Williams (1872-1958) composed his Sixth Symphony (E-Major and Minor) in 1946, right after World War II. Those who remembered the Fourth Symphony (F-Minor), from 1934, should not have started at the new score's harshness and dissonance; but the serene Fifth Symphony (D-Minor) had interposed between the Fourth and Sixth, reinforcing the received notion of Vaughan-Williams the gentle pastoralist. So the Sixth, with its eruptive crescendi in the First Movement and malevolent saxophone in the Scherzo, struck its early audiences as shocking, as cynical, and as a resigned editorial on the dim prospects of post-war humanity. The rumor even circulated that the pianissimo Finale, in the form of a slow fugue, represented a world blasted and depopulated by atomic weapons. (RVW denied this and quoted Prospero from "The Tempest": "We are are such stuff as dreams are made on.") Adrian Boult recorded the Sixth in 1949, two years after its première, for EMI, and now Pearl reissues the matrices along with other archival material - all of it film-music - from the same period in the composer's career. Boult would re-record the Sixth at least twice; but the 1949 "take" makes a claim on our interest not only because it uses the composer's first, quickly withdrawn, version of the Scherzo but also because it lies close to the music's inception and thus takes its character from the very Zeitgeist that gave rise to RVW's apocalyptic vision in the first place. Peter Pirie ("The English Musical Renaissance" [1976]) describes this bleak score as "noisy... dramatic [and] powerful." Boult's interpretation brings out the tumultuousness of it, keeping up the tempos where, in later recorded performances, he becomes slightly more expansive, to some small detriment in the tightly wound mood. Boult's Second Movement (Moderato) has something of the quality of "nightmare" that Pirie sees in it. Pirie also notes that certain "effects" in the Sixth "suggest film-music." In fact, RVW would draw his Seventh Symphony from the music that he contributed to the 1948 film "Scott of the Antarctic," a minuscule suite (8.22) from which, conducted by Ernest Irving, we hear next in the program. The disc also gives us brief excerpts from the scores to "Coastal Command," "49th Parallel," "The Story of a Flemish Farm," and "The Loves of Joanna Godden." (The conductor Muir Matheson has a hand in some of this.) The eponymous Symphony better serves the Antarctic music, although this is not to dismiss the playing on these early "soundtrack" platters. The full scores of "Coastal Command" and "The Story of a Flemish Farm" appeared a while back on a Marco Polo CD. The main interest here (and the interest is high) thus lies in the Sixth Symphony.
