Veteran pianist Peter Kater's first project for his own recording label, Source Music, is an attractive, ensemble-based package of reflections on intimate matters such as personal touchstones, inexpressible emotions, and idyllic notions of love. Joined by Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn, soprano sax, pennywhistle) and five other players (guitar, bass, cello, drums, percussion), Kater creates melodies that at times hint at the plaintive, elusive beauty of Oregon and at other times take a more straightforward, heartfelt approach that brings to mind the pop-influenced music of Michael Gettel (particularly in Kater's wistful ode to his wife, "Gabrielle"). Additionally, the wordless vocals in two softly rhythmic selections ("Winds of Change" and "Always and Forever") will prompt comparisons to Pat Metheny's more popular works. Falling somewhere between sentimental and sophisticated, and perhaps just shy of its intended state of blissful transcendence, Heart's Desire nevertheless conveys an appealing, yearning mood of hopefulness that's capable of kindling a warm glow in the hearts of like-minded romantic spirits. --Terry Wood

Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16
I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.

Pianist Peter Kater's first album in several years, and his debut on his new label, Source Music, is a powerhouse. It is only July, but I know this will be one of my "Top 5" albums for 2001. After "crashing and burning" (Kater's own description in a May `01 New Age Voice Magazine interview) and rebuilding his life and energies, Kater returns with a more focused and emotional self - as well as a more relaxed and happy one. The resulting music is dynamic, flowing, soaring, soothing, and just plain beautiful. A feeling of contentment seems to course through all of the music, but it is far from ear candy or meditation music. This is music that begs to be heard and understood, and felt. "Heart's Desire" is also a stunning showcase for wind-player, Paul McCandless - unquestionably one of the best musicians on the planet. Cellist David Darling also appears on several tracks, providing additional warmth and soul. Guitarist Randy Chavez, bassist Wade Mathews, and percussionists Larry Thompson and Robert Jospe also appear. Kater and McCandless seem like a match made in heaven, and are a seamless duo.
All nine tracks on "Heart's Desire" are exceptional, but I have three favorites. The title track is a gentle and very moving piece full of longing and hope. The melody is simple, but goes right to the heart. The full ensemble is present for this piece, but McCandless holds the spotlight with his soaring penny whistle. "Always and Forever" is a bit more upbeat, and again features McCandless on penny whistle as well as oboe and sax. Peter Kater is one of the best pianists out there, and he is to be commended for letting his ensemble players really shine, for not needing to be "the star" on every track. These musicians complement and enhance each other's performances so well that no one needs to be the star. The masters make it look so easy! "Soul Retrieval" starts at the low end of the piano with McCandless entering a few bars later on oboe. There is a gentle bass and drum accompaniment, and the other instruments join in as the piece just keeps building to an anthemic state, full of strength, beauty, and joy. After the peak, the piece quiets somewhat, feeling like a cool-down period after a huge burst of emotional or physical energy. A reprise of the title cut closes this incredible album on a peaceful, soothing note. I give "Heart's Desire" my highest recommendation.

Inspiring and Thought provoking music for the theater.......2001-02-04
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing "Colette Collage", but i have listened to the CD cast recording. The music alone served to transport me through emotions and character development to get an idea of where the story, in a compelling and entertaining way, takes the audience . To me, that alone is a good start for good theater music. i'll admit that i would have preferred a few more character songs that express how Colette feels, what she learns and how she sees the world --especially in the beginning when she comes to Paris as a young woman married to a man who uses and abuses her. Still, i find the musical score inspiring and thoughtprovoking. As a CD of musical theater music, i thought it was easy to enjoy. Just clear your mind of what you think a Schmidt-Jones musical should be based on what you've heard before. This is something different! Serious, not pompous; emotional, not corny; complex, perhaps like Madame Colette herself was.
A Truly Awful Experience.......2001-01-18
Last year, against the advice of a cast member, I went to see a production of "Colette Collage" in Chicago. The actors in the company did a fantastic job with terrible source material. This was a truly horrifying play with a score that borders on the absurd. Songs like "Do it For Willy," "The Dog and Cat Duet," and "Decorate the Human Face" had lyrics that were just laughable. The true low-moment of the score, though, is "Be My Lady" that is reminiscent of a cheezy 70s love song. This is an awful show with an awful score. Do yourself a favor and avoid buying this recording.
It's not The Fantasticks, but then, what is?.......2001-01-08
What a score! Finally, a mature work from the team that wrote the longest running musical in world history. It's in Harvey Schmidt's distinctive style, with jagged melodies and piano/harp-based orchestrations, yet it still displays its own unique, moody flavor. Judy Kaye (THE ANASTASIA AFFAIR, RAGTIME) is perfectly cast as the pensive yet finally optimistic Colette, Jason Graae (LUCKY STIFF) does justice to the show's best material as Colette's September romance Maurice, and the rest of the cast is uniformly wonderful. Schmidt and Jones have given this score a little bit of everything: a tone-setting opening ("Joy"), fascinating character songs ("La Vagabonde"), comedy numbers ("Decorate The Human Face"), powerful ballads ("Why Can't I Walk Through That Door"), love songs ("Be My Lady"), and even reveal a latent flair for pastiche ("Ooh-La-La"). Most importantly, though, this is a mature, well-thought out work. It is tightly constructed, and Jones commits none of the lyrical gaffs for the sake of a rhyme that marred his earlier work. COLETTE is far more thought-provoking and subtle than the inane 110 IN THE SHADE, the trite I DO! I DO! or the self-derivative CELEBRATION, and if it lacks the irrestible charm of THE FANTASTICKS, it has a sophistication in both attitude and presentation that the authors' early masterpiece sometimes misses. All in all, while the general public might get lost in this show's complex melodies and characters, this recording is a must for any musical theater afficianado.
