This is the first of many volumes recording a Pilgrimage made in 2000, when John Eliot Gardiner, his remarkable instrumentalists and chorus and a team of outstanding soloists performed each Bach Cantata on the feast day for which it was originally composed. Each box will contain 2 CDs, copious notes, and full texts and translations. The fact of the Pilgrimage aside, these performances are simply stunning. Gardiner treats each cantata like a little drama, and his players and singers make certain to dramatize the music and text vividly. When, in Cantata No. 20, the tenor sings of "flames that burn forever," for example, the wildly difficult coloratura and accompanying strings slash with heat. Elsewhere, the listener will bask in Cantata 30's oddly rhythmic alto solo with flute and muted violins. The chorus is excellent throughout, but they dazzle in the 8-minute opening to Cantata 7. The soloists are well-known Bach singers, lieder singers, and performers from the world of opera. Bass Dietrich Henschel and tenor Paul Agnew are, perhaps, the finest of the five, and they have the most to do as well. This is a glorious set of six cantatas, a splendid 2.5 hours of great music-making. --Robert Levine

I have ordered and received two copies of this set, and in both sets the second CD refused to play. I wonder, are others are having this problem?

1 out of 5 stars So, I bought this one..........2006-10-12

(Sorry! I goofed! That should have been FIVE stars!)

..and promptly put down my order for the lot. I already have two sets of cantatas, those by Rilling (the first complete cantatas ever recorded) and the Brilliant label set by Leusink, the former recorded over many years, the latter recorded in a breakneck 15 months. I also have many of the excellent Bach Collegium Japan/Suzuki set for BIS. As you may have gathered, I like the cantatas! However, this promises to be something special. It seems to me that Gardiner's Bach now is fully rounded, as good in the reflective material as in the bright, festive stuff, capturing the soul of Bach's work. In addition, these are the most beautifuly packaged CDs I've seen - little hardback books with the CDs in sleeves at either end and the texts in the middle, along with excerpts from a journal kept by Gardiner on the pilgrimage, with his thoughts on the particular cantatas. And of course Steve McCurry's gorgeous cover photos. Subsequent volumes have lived up to the promise of this one, so I'm making room on the shelves for a lot more. In my opinion, the only serious competition that this set has is Suzuki. If only I had enough money... Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Suzuki and Koopman, Gardiner is the man!.......2006-04-28

There are currently three Bach Cantata series underway. Sir John Elliott Gardiner is the most recent additon to a field that already contains Suzuki/Bach Collegium Japan on BIS and Koopman/Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra on Challenge. Gardiner undertook recording the complete Catata's on the Sunday's for which they were composed in 2000. The first results released is this Grammophone Award Winner. This is the most spiritual Bach on record.

5 out of 5 stars Two exquisite CDs!!!.......2006-03-18

Listen the Coro of BWV39 (Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot), it is the most beautiful and delicated interpretation I ever heard!!! Or the aria duet and first bass aria in bwv20 Or the entire cantatas 167, 7, 30 or .... well. Listen all!! All the interpretations in these two CDs are perfect and lovely made!!!
Long life to Bach!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Pinnacle Achievement.......2006-02-16

John Eliot Gardner's Project - performing all of the myriad Bach cantatas on the Feast Days for which they were composed - is a daunting effort and one that may seem a bit on the Hollywood side of commercialism were it not for the quality of the finished concept.

These performances of Cantatas No. 7, 20, 30, 39, 75 and 167 are beautifully performed by the English Baroque Soloists (instrumentalists and chorus) with Wilke te Brummelstroete , Dietrich Henschel , Gillian Keith , Paul Agnew, and Joann Lund as the extraordinary soloists.

Gardiner finds the right tempi, flavor, and drama of each of these cantatas, emphasizing the style of performance from Bach's time. The results are top-notch, technically superb, elegantly performed works that stand with the best of the recorded versions. The Sonics of the recordings are excellent and the 'packaging' includes translations and informative, if somewhat exhaustive, notes on the derivation and history of each of the cantatas. This is Volume 1 and to be sure it will encourage the listener to purchase the entire set. Recommended. Grady Harp, February 06

4 out of 5 stars Good points far outweigh some minor deficiencies.......2005-11-29

This whole set is gorgeous (although the second cd gets a bit tediuos unless you really like early music), and Emma Kirkby has one the most beautiful, distinctive soprano voices I have ever heard, one can't help but like her, but hard-core critics beware, her intonation is not flawless, especially in the "Alleluia" of the "Nulla in Mundo" cycle, one can hear her go off on some of the high notes. Like I said, it's beautiful, but that does bother me personally every time I listen to that track. But buy it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars More of Emma Please.......2004-01-02

I would have given this CD 5 stars if Emma Kirkby had sung all of the cantatas on Disc 2. Unfortunately, most of the cantatas on this disc are sung by Catherine Bott, who in my musically illiterate opinion, sounds more like a mezzo-soprano than a true soprano. Kirkby on the other hand is a legend in early music and brings her trademark "purity of sound" to this recording. The gorgeous duet she sings with Judith Nelson on disc 1 is alone worth the price of this set (that's probably a slight exaggeration, but it's pretty damn good anyway).

Getting away from Kirkby a sec, the Gloria on CD 1 is indeed glorious. The choral movements are sharp and lively, having that quality of all good choirs of sounding not quite of this earth. Listening to this CD after a couple of beers, you could be forgiven for thinking that your house has been invaded by cherubim and seraphim.

I'm not a huge fan of counter tenors (probably something to do with feeling threatened about my latent homosexuality or being emasculated) so I can't really provide any worthwhile comments about the Nisi Dominus which is a showcase of James Bowman's skills. Bowman has pretty impressive credentials, so I'm not about to get stuck into him. Suffice to say, I usually skip thru tracks 13-18 on disc 1.

5 out of 5 stars amazingly beautiful.......2003-04-27

This CD is worth buying just for "Nulla in mundo pax sincera." This is one of the most beautiful vivaldi motets and is simply heavenly. I absoluterly love it!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious cantatas on the second CD.......2002-06-14

For once the 5 stars are worth it. The choral works on disc 1 are masterful benchmark interpretations of the pick of Vivaldi's sacred output. What makes it a real bargain however is the second disc of cantatas - one of Emma Kirkby and Catherine Bott's finest achievements on the old L'Oiseau Lyre label. Couple this with full texts and an intelligent booklet. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars a "must have".......2002-05-11

This is the ONLY version of "Gloria" you should own! The Choir of Christ Church is amazing and truly does justice to Vivaldi's work.

4 out of 5 stars Jaroussky has a gifted voice.......2006-06-21

In early polyphony, the contratenor was a voice part in melodic counterpoint against the tenor. It was written roughly in the same range as the tenor. In the 15th century, contratenor split into contratenor altus and contratenor bassus, which were respectively above and below the tenor. By the 16th century, however, the term became obsolete as Latin lost popularity. In Italy, the contratenor altus became simply alto; in France, haute-contre; in England, countertenor.

Countertenors remained in the niche of sacred vocal music, in part because women were banned from singing in church services. However, they were not prominently featured in the rise of opera. Handel would occasionally write a part specifically for a countertenor, but the castrati were vastly more popular. As a result, the countertenor voice was found only in cathedral choirs and the occasional early music ensemble for a few centuries.

The most visible icon of the countertenor revival was Alfred Deller, an English singer and champion of authentic early music performance. Deller initially called himself an "alto", but his collaborator Michael Tippett recommended the archaic term "countertenor" to describe his voice. In the 1950s and 60s, his group, the Deller Consort, increased audiences' awareness of (and appreciation for) renaissance and Baroque music. Benjamin Britten wrote the role of Oberon in his setting of A Midsummer Night's Dream for him. Deller was the first modern countertenor to achieve such celebrity, but he would not be the last. Russell Oberlin was Deller's American counterpart, and another early music pioneer. Oberlin's success was entirely unprecedented in a country that had seen little exposure to anything before Bach, and it paved the way for the next generation of countertenors.

Today, countertenors are much in demand in many forms of classical music. In opera, many roles originally written for castrati are now sung by countertenors, as are some trouser roles. Modern composers write countertenor parts, both in choral works and opera. Men's choral groups such as Chanticleer and the King's Singers employ them to great effect in a variety of genres, including early music, gospel, and even folk songs.
A few countertenors have a range comparable to a female soprano. They are usually called sopranists, and often sing higher castrato arias. As there are not many of them, Jaroussky is the latest countertenor and should the word "gifted" for him suits his special talent, this CD deserves a 4 star.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-20

The vocal selections on this disc include 2 arias from Vivaldi operas. However, at that time the cantatas and the operas were very closely aligned using the same instrumentation and truthfully it would be difficult to tell the difference between them had I not been previously informed. Jaroussky has excellent vocal technique;in fact in some passages he astounds the listener. His aria :Cor ingrato dispietato (from an opera) displays amazing breath control and clean clear notes. If there is something lacking it is in slow passages that demand more intensity and emotion; age and experience will certainly help!!!And his voice sounds better when the music has a high tessitura. He's a fresh new voice in the world of countertenors. My appreciation knows no bounds for the "Ensemble Artaserse";they are truly excellent and skilled on their instruments; wonderful to hear. This is really a great disc!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Jaroussky is exceptional.......2005-09-07

Jaroussky's singing adds to the growing interest in Vivaldian opera. His performance of "Qual Dopo ..." is both a demonstration of the great technique and artistry of his beautiful voice. For those curious to explore his singing range, try his masterful deliverance of arias such as "Tu m'offendi",from La Verita en Cimento, and "Sol da te", from "Orlando Furioso" where he honors the composer with the nuances, adornments, and melodic draws of his voice. This CD would have showcased the cantata genre much better had the musical selection been more diverse in note and tempo. Nonetheless, Jaroussky is at his best!

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2005-05-20

Countertenor is not this reviewer's favorite range of male singer. That's probably so because it is both unfamiliar and underperformed and, when it is sung, never comes off as quite natural to the singer himself. In many respects, it really is an outdated male vocal range that should have gone the way of castrati. Interestingly, it seems to going in just the opposite direction. At least Virgin Classics must think so because last month it released a new CD by countertenor Philippe Jaroussky singing Vivaldi Cantatas, with the Ensemble Artaserse -- and it is surprisingly good. The CD consists of a couple quite beautiful period solo ensemble selections, theorbo etc. (See cut #9 "Prelude to Vivaldi") and vocals that demonstrate the best of what a countertenor sounds like, most notably Piangero Sinche L'onda, Ruggiero. Mr. Jaroussky's voice is both agile and open and his diction is punctuated and enhanced by a smooth delivery that is passionate enough, such that each piece comes off as a personal story that truly captivates the listener. An added plus is the fact that the thematic organization of this CD is even. In other words, you won't be reaching for the "skip" button here. The quality of the recording, too, is excellent. Although many listeners prefer the live aspect of concert performances, the very thing that attracts, can also produce a hollow, almost metallic sound in a live hall. In Cantatas, you won't find any unevenness or harsh selections. You might even find that you are pleasantly surprised by how intriguing it is.

5 out of 5 stars Another Fine Countertenor Lights Up The World!.......2005-04-13

This exciting recording of Vivaldi cantatas for solo voice and instrumental ensemble is one of the more compelling releases of the year to date! While the music of the glorious Venetian Antonio Vivaldi is well known, especially the standard repertoire `The Four Seasons' and the choral works and chamber works - even some operas - the cantatas are rarely performed and this CD of his best ones should change that.

Philippe Jaroussky is yet another fine countertenor who is rather recent on the scene. With the growing popularity of musicians courageous and gifted enough to become successful in the countertenor repertoire (just pause for a moment and think of the significant number a star quality countertenors on the stages today), the numerous pieces for this range of voice continue to appear. Vivaldi's cantatas are refined, beautifully embellished, demanding consummate artistry of not only the high hurdles for the voice but also for the accompanying forces. Jaroussky seems to have endless breath, singing the long extended lines with total ease. His embellishments alter with each da capo as to the period born! This is a voice a great power and warmth and one that feels married to the texts.

Providing brilliant collaboration is the Ensemble Artaserse and period instruments. The variety of color is awe-inspiring and the technique of these unique musicians is impeccable. In their solo portions they produce a richly elegant - yes, Venetian sound. And in tandem with Jaroussky the complete effect is one of single purpose, line, and harmony.

This is a new CD to treasure and the sampling is generous. For this reviewer this is a new repertoire to explore and it would be difficult to imagine forces better suited to these treasures than those on this CD. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 05

5 out of 5 stars IT'S THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WITH J.S.......2006-03-20

In this 5th installment (Actually Volume 14) of the Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage, it is the Christmas Season to be celebrated with Johann. In this 1-disc installment, we hear cantatas written by J.S. Bach for Christmas time. These Cantatas have always been out-performed by the "Christmas Oratorio".. What's the reason for that, I will never know. The cantatas contained in Volume 14 find dear Johann at his very BEST; they are filled with hope, joy (dare I say) and bounce reflective of the season. All of the aforesaid descriptions are very evident especially in the cantata "Unser Mund sei voll Lachens" BWV 110. As I've noted profusely in my previous reviews, on this board, of the other four installments, I find this enterprise of Gardiner to be outstanding in every way. He along with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloist perform Bach's cantatas gloriously. Volume 14 is no exception; it contains some beautiful music. This volume was recorded in New York and all of the participants perform magnificently! The Tenor and Bass have the most solos to perform and they are astounding.

Once again, James Gilchrist, the tenor is astounding-listen to his arias in Tracts 3, 8 and 22-wow! Peter Harvey, the bass is very good also-listen to tracts 10 and 16-they are wonderful! The sopranos, Katharine Fuge and Joanne Lunn singing their duets with the tenor and alto beautifully-those duets are simply fantastic. Just in case you've read my reviews of the other releases in this series, I am still very much enjoying countertenors Robin Tyson and William Towers-they are really very good. In fact, I loved this release!

Although, I listened to this recording about three months after the holidays, it succeeded in putting me in a rather festive mood. If you want to hear some J.S. Bach in his substantial glory, buy this album of his Cantatas. (do read the previous reviewer's magnificent summary of the contents pf Volume14.) By the way, the New York audiance must have been very healthy too; I heard not one sneeze or cough out of them--in the dead of winter too--i wonder what's their secret?

5 out of 5 stars Cantatas on disc by BWV # & name........2006-01-12

This is not a review but merely a helper for potential buyers whom recognize Bach's cantatas by BWV # with the name. This disc (the first issue of a single disc) is the continuation of Gardiner's "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage." The CD is produced with utmost quality in sound, however it is packaged in an awkward cardboard case.

The cantatas on this set by BWV # and Name:

BWV 91, Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ

BWV 121, Christum wir sollen loben schon

BWV 40, Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes

BWV 110, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens

    Happy listening!

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-22

This is a four disc set that includes cantatas by:Alessandro Scarlatti-Caldara-Handel and Giovanni Bonancini. What a treasure trove of music!!!!The cantata, to some extent, is a development from the madrigal that appeared in Italy at the start of the seventeenth century. While the madrigal was refined and delicate, the cantata evolved because composers felt the need to introduce a dramatic narrative element into vocal chamber music and thusly the music took a lighter, wittier turn.Scarlatti is considered as one if the initiators, and also one of the reformers of this genre, whose outlines he established. In his cantatas for a single solo voice and continuo,Scarlatti treats the latter as a true partner of the voice. Caldara, who was Scarlatti's contemporary, played a large part in the development of the chamber cantata for one to five voices. Bonancini, who was essentially centered on opera, nonetheless wrote innumerable cantatas for one or more soloists. Handel's stay in Italy between the years 1706 and 1710 resulted in a time of intense creative activity, and he quite naturally gravitated towards the cantata. One of my favorites of Handels on this disc is:"Splenda l'alba in oriente", Lesne does a very learned and skillful renditon of this music. The lightness of his countertenor voice suits this genre very well. He has good diction and a nice emotional response to the varying moods of the music. Sandrine Piau (soprano) does a nice job of blending and complementing the countertenor tone quality. All in all it's a most enjoyable and varied listening experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Sensitive.......2006-01-20

I want to just say that being a countertenor, it's hard to find a partner who can counter your unique tone quality and timbre. Sandrine Piau is one of the best period sopranos I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The most pure and beautiful tone you can imagine. She plays off Gerard Lesne as if they are one voice, yet still seperate entities in their roles as musical indivuals in this recording. The selections are nothing short of amazing, and had me hooked from the very first track. Every once of energy has been given to the sensitivity of this unworldly pure music. The Handel pieces are a rare find and a surprise to those who think they know G.F. Handel like the back of their hand. And of course Gerard Lesne is one of the most celebrated countertenors on the stage today. His sound is unique yet still beautiful in that he is keen to preserve the music in its intended context. This recording is an amazing find for those who can't get enough of the countertenor sound, and can't find many recordings of Caldara, and Bonocini.

5 out of 5 stars Dellightful Baroque performances from a masterful contralto.......2004-03-29

One wonders how Virgin Classics manages to produce and market these "Pleasure 4" 4-CD sets for such low prices, but prospective buyers need not worry that they might be getting an inferior product. While an avid lover of Baroque music, before buying this set I had never been aware of contralto Gérard Lesne's name, though I soon noticed that it appears on a number of disks that I already owned--along with the names of great Baroque maestros like Philippe Herreweghe and William Christie and outstanding performers like Fabio Bondi and Véronique Gens. The discography of Lesne and his Il Seminario Musicale is nothing short of astounding in quantity and range, including many disks that have received rave reviews from Amazon reviewers and customers. Lesne is certainly as versatile a countertenor as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, though he is apparently a little less in the limelight. The cantatas presented here are well arranged so that there is considerable contrast in style and tempo from one piece to the next, assuring that the listener never feels a sense of monotony. Moreover, we have four disks of cantatas each by a different composer, and many of these works will be new to even the average Baroque aficionado. I myself was not even aware of Caldara (c. 1670-1736), ten years younger than Scarlatti, who though "one of the most prolific composers of his generation," gets less than eight minutes on Harmonia Mundi's 15-disk Les Lumieres du Baroque (on the CD called "The Golden Age of the Oratorio"). Bononcini (1670-1747) was an equally prolific writer of vocal music, a pioneer of Italian opera, and an associate--and later rival--of Handel (1685-1759) in London. It is a delight to be able to revel in and compare some of the many delightful cantatas produced more-or-less contemporaneously by these great composers, performed with an alternation of loving gentleness and sprightly vitality by Lesne and ISM with instrumental interludes and accompaniments that can stand with the best of Baroque period performances. Lovers of late 17th and early 18th century music will find these relaxing disks ideal not only for dedicated listening, but also for playing in the background while working, doing household chores, or driving. If you already have some of Lesne's recordings, you will want this set as well, and for those who do not, this set is likely to become the beginning of a Lesne collection you will cherish for years.

There are certain musical monuments to Western civilization that no music lover should be without, at least in part. These include Haydn's symphonies and string quartets, Mozart's piano concertos, Handel's oratorios, Beethoven's string quartets and piano sonatas, Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas, and this, perhaps the biggest monument of all, the Bach sacred cantatas. About 200 of them survive and at least 100 are lost. All of them consist of a series of arias, choruses, and hymns based on sacred texts. Bach had to compose a new one every week for several years, and what makes the music so amazing is not only its quantity, but its sheer quality. There is literally no such thing as "bad" Bach, and this series of performances not only stands as one of the great achievements in the history of recording, it introduced many listeners to the fascinating sound of "authentic instruments." Is this set too much of a good thing? Nah! --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars As Close as I can Imagine for Authentic Bach.......2005-08-02

If you like your Bach with a heavy Bernstein beat, operatic sopranos, and a huge concert hall sound, or in contrast if you would like to hear Bach as his parishoners did, then these recordings are probably not for you. If you want excellent recordings of the Bach Cantatas using period instruments and boys' voices, to include the occasional flaw, then this discounted, but still pricy set is for you. Here, for the first time, anyone can explore and study the marvels of Bach's Jahrgaenge close to the way it was meant to be heard.

When one considers that Bach had to produce a new cantata each week, and that the performers were local musicians, then one should not expect a perfect performance. When one recalls that the Cantata merely served to reinforce the message of the week according to the church calendar, one should not expect consistently brilliant music. To this, add the fact that the parishioners would have much preferred someone not so old fashioned as Bach to produce their church music. Set up so perfectly for failure, Bach produced some of the most perfect music ever written. Here, bad Bach does not exist.

The use of boys' voices is brilliant. A boy soprano simply does not sound like a woman. A good boy soprano's voice is clear and pure, without the extreme tremolo found in "trained women sopranos." The result is Bach at its purest.

In the mid to late 1950's, preforming Bach on original instruments became an interesting experiment. One group attempting this was the Bach Aria Group, directed by Frank Brief, who performed at the Town Hall in New York City. Over a two year span, Mr. Brief decided that it might be interesting to use a boy's choir instead of a women's choir once each year. He chose the Columbus Boychoir (now called the American Boychoir) of which I was a member for those two occasions. From the critical reviews, the results were very well accepted. Mr. Brief, however, did not go the full way. Instead of using boy soprano soloists, he called on women sopranos such as Beverly Sills. While they gave outstanding performances, it was not "original Bach." But when we asked why didn't he use a boy soprano, Mr. Brief responded that boys' voices could not be sufficiently trained to do Bach justice.

These recordings belie this judgement. Bach did know what he was doing! Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Recording's Greatest Achievement.......2003-04-14

Had this set not been made, then the history of performance practice in the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond would have proceeded very differently. Had this set not been made we would not have many of the current leading figures in the field of early music performance, nearly all of whom were in some way connected with the performance revolution which found its most profound expression in these recordings. For it was during the 14 or so years of this recording project (between 1971 and 1985) that three of the greatest musicians of our time, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Bruggen forever altered the public's perception of the surviving remnants of Bach's fabled, but rarely heard, "Jahrgaenge", or yearly cycles of church cantatas. For this reason alone, this recording is of profound importance.

Leonhardt, with his consort in Amsterdam, and Harnoncourt, with his Concentus Musicus of Vienna shared the task of recording, with an unmatched team of vocal and instrumental soloists, Bach's roughly 200 surviving "concerti sacri", perhaps a further hundred being lost to us. It was a repertoire more honoured in the history books than experienced in performance. This enterprise changed that state of affairs for ever.

The arguments which are now sometimes made (chiefly by those who are unaware of the extraordinary and revolutionary step which these performances represented), decrying the slightly "raw" (I prefer "vocal") sound of original instruments, or the occasional shakiness of a boy soprano soloist, miss the point of this enterprise, which was to present the music in a new way using Bach's own contemporary resources. Leonhardt and Harnoncourt are the first to insist that using "historical instruments" makes sense because those are simply the best tools for the job. Re-constituting something old has never been their aim. Rather, their idea was to break free of the mindless tradition of performance which took no account of the sounds that Bach actually had in his head when he created his "well-regulated" music for the churches of Saxony. And how does this work in practice? We are left to marvel at an extraordinary level of accomplishment on the part of nearly everyone associated with this project, vocally and instrumentally.

Gustav Leonhardt was well aware (and hopeful) that subsequent generations would likely improve upon aspects of performance which still remained to be sorted out. But, as he said, it was a start. Indeed, when he and Harnoncourt were jointly awarded the Erasmus prize in the Netherlands in 1980, he remarked, with singular modesty and self-awareness: "It was not done well, but it is remarkable that it was done at all". This tells us more about Leonhardt's famous humility, than it does about the standards of these performances, which are usually (with few exceptions) very high indeed. In many instances they will never be surpassed. What we have here is a glimpse of one of music's "golden" ages captured forever on disc. What the listener will marvel at is the extraordinary assuredness of technique and style which is evident in every one of these cantata performances.

The solo vocal contributions of Kurt Equiluz, Max van Egmond, Paul Esswood, Marjanne Kweksilber (BWV 51) are simply without equal, and the current generation of fine Bach singers would be the first to concede their enormous debt to the participants in this great enterprise (their teachers, in many cases). The choirs should also be singled out for attention: Wiener Sangerknaben, Tolzer Knabenchor, Hannover Knabenchor, Choir of Kings College, Cambridge as well as directors Heinz Hennig, Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, Philippe Herreweghe, David Willcocks and Hans Gillesberger. So Europe's finest were all involved in this.

The instrumental soloists: Frans Bruggen, Walter van Hauwe, Kees Boeke, Anner Bylsma, Jurg Schaftlein, Lucy van Dael, Sigiswald, Wieland and Bart Kuijken, Ton Koopman, Bob van Asperen, Lidewij Schiefes, Alice Harnoncourt, Herbert and Herwig Tachezi, Erich Hobarth, Friedemann Immer - to list only the more familiar names - have created a whole world of intelligent and vital performance which has transformed musical thought in our time. No-one in any area of musical performance has remained untouched by the ideas which are so forcefully presented here (even those who'd be the last to admit it). The fundamental idea of treating each period's music as a vital and representative product of its time is one which now extends to music of all periods, signaling the fulfilment of one of Leonhardt's and Harnoncourt's chief aims: to eliminate the artificial distinction between mainstream and "early" music, and, instead, to treat all music with proper respect for its origins and context.

What this recording continues to offer the listener is the experience of hearing the music for the first time, which the technical polish of subsequent surveys cannot quite match. For the young person wishing to learn about music, there is no better starting point than investing in this set, now available at a fraction of its original cost (unfortunately, minus the scores, which were one of the hallmarks of this series in its first incarnation on LP.

It seems pointless to list highlights, but one might start with the following: BWV 1, 6, 8, 11, 13, 19, 23, 29 and so on. The list is endless. Better still, buy the set and begin a life-time's voyage of discovery instead. Bach, Leonhardt and Harnoncourt: you can't do better than that. Oh, and we should also acknowledge the contribution of the founder recording producer for this project, Wolf Erichson (even though he didn't stay with Teldec to the end of it). Without him, the revolution in informed and intelligent music performance on recordings would never have happened.

This complete set of Bach sacred cantatas is not only a bargain price, but it contains some of the most profound interpretations these pieces ever had. Recorded during the 1970s on period instruments, with some of most prodiguous singers (Equiluz, Esswood) and an outstanding orchestral support, this is the best integral collection of cantatas there is. In order to restore the forgotten sence of baroque music, instrumentation is reduced to a minimum, the continuo is supported with antique instruments such as the basoon, tenors have been thoughtfully selected as NON-operatic. Another reconstructionist aspect was the use of boy choirs, which in later recordings Harnoncourt gave up. Boy choirs are not only authentical, but have the advantage of pitch purity. While in some arias (such as the extraordinary duet "lobe den herren" - BWV 137) this seems an excellent choice, in most it fails in more or less apparent manner.

While Herreweghe's or Gardiner's new interpretations are CERTAINLY better in both orchestral and vocal support, they all are greatly in debt of Harnoncourt/Leonhard, for it's always simple to improve something ALREADY existing instead of breaking new grounds (as this stellar 1970's recording did). Not to be forgotten is the fact newer version bring a sence of lightness which pleases anyone's ears, but it's manytimes inappropriate for the content of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Teldec Set Still Holds Up After 30 Years.......2001-04-11

This set of almost 200 cantatas is, without a doubt, a milestone in recording history, and that alone makes it valuable. There are now at least two other competing sets on the market (Helmuth Rilling's complete set--on modern instruments, alas!--and Ton Koopman's period performance set still in the works), but this one, warts and all, still captivates and draws the listener into the world of Bach's cantatas like no other.

I would argue that no one can really claim to know Bach without knowing both his organ works and his cantatas. After all, this is the music that occupied him for most of his professional life. Most of these cantatas were written as part of his duties at Leipzig, and while in the hands of any lesser composer that might have meant uninspired music cranked out week by week out of necessity, Bach rarely, if ever, had an off day. Each cantata is a little world unto itself, a place you can retreat to for 20 minutes and either reflect on their spiritual message (which, be warned, is sometimes grim indeed), or just lose yourself in the beauty and grace of the melodic lines.

Harnoncourt and Leonhardt choose to keep these performances intimate; this is not the Bach of the concert hall; these are direct, personal expressions that work well in the private space of one's living room. Some of the playing sounds a bit shaky by today's standards--apparently some of the soloists were still discovering how to play period instruments that had not been heard in centuries--and the boy soloists seem to strain at their parts sometimes, especially in the earlier recordings, but that only adds to the charm: I much prefer the uncertain readings to letter-perfect performances offered by others. The performances actually draw the listener's attention away from the playing itself, forcing attention on the music and the text, which is entirely consistent with the nature of these pieces.

For those who don't want to spend the 500+ dollars all at once, Teldec also offers these in six-CD sets at a great budget price. They're worth every penny. My only disappointment is that the CD package doesn't include the scores, as the old Telefunken vinyl sets did. But that's perfectly understandable. This set reminds us why Harnoncourt and Leonhardt were once at the forefront of the period-instrument movement. Let's hope that Teldec keeps these recordings in print for a long, long time.

The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen. In Bach's day the 4 soloists would have been members of the small chorus; in this recorded performance the soloists serve, together, as the chorus. In the end, we have to say that Bach wrote his most sublime music for the church; but most important, his writings have a spiritual power, a solid strength and sincerity that cannot be traced to technique, but to the inspiration of pure genius. And the 4 soloists on this disc bring out very clearly his greatness!!!!There are quartets, duets, trios and solos all accompanied expertly by the Purcell Quartet. In addition we have recorders, oboe and bassoon to add to the overall instrumental "color". Some of the high points for me: "In deine Hande.." Michael Chance (countertenor solo);"Den Tod....." Emma Kirkby & Chance duet. It's all great music and a must if you are an Early Music fan!

Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan didn't begin their series of complete Bach cantatas with the proverbial bang. The three cantatas on this Volume 1 are rather subdued; two of them are downright solemn: No. 150, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, which concerns the suffering of this world and the wait for salvation in the next, and the famous cantata No. 4, Christ lag in Todesbanden, which rings inventive variations on the titular chorale melody. The remaining cantata, No. 196, Der Herr denket an uns, evidently was intended for a wedding, which it celebrates with a calm, glowing reverence. All three cantatas are from early in Bach's career; there are no recitatives at all, and the distinction between choruses and arias is not as clear-cut as in the later cantatas. The performances aren't quite as immaculate as those on the BCJ's later discs (the choir in particular has a few minor lapses of tuning), but the beautiful sound and graceful musicality so evident in the later work are present here, too--making this CD worthwhile at this bargain price. Several lovely excerpts from the later discs in the series are included at the end of the record as teasers--making this title the proverbial "loss leader." --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful beginning.......2002-07-26

This CD is a stunningly beautiful beginning to what promises to be a very special traversal of the complete Bach cantata repertoire. Bach is the most spiritual of the best-known composers, and, together with the masses and motets, the cantatas are Bach's most spiritual pieces. Suzuki has assembled an awesome cast of performers. The soloists on this CD are more than adequate, and the male solos are sung with exceptional beauty. These three cantatas barely scratch the surface of the repertoire, but they present Suzuki with the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of his team. His interpretations properly capture the solemnity of BWV#4, an early Bach piece on the theme "Christ lag in Todesbanden". Suzuki is careful to let the complexity and beauty of the music overwhelm us, and not present an overinflated sound. If I could put two words to the effect, I would call the sound "lean" but "vibrant". Suzuki is to Bach cantatas what champagne is to wine. I have enjoyed the Koopman set so far also, but I prefer the spirituality that Suzuki brings to this music. This first volume is really extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars And away we go!.......2001-11-01

Volume 1, folks--yes, I plan to buy every single volume. I'm new to Bach's cantatas. I kept putting it off; but in that time, I was researching different performances, sampling this and that. I was tipped off to Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan. They rec'd glowing reviews from almost everybody. Sure, an aria is sometimes done better elsewhere. But you know what? I place this series at the very top of the Bach cantatas recordings. The quality is consistently high (judging from the 7 CDs I own which I've listened to over and over. This music is infectious! where have I been all this time!). Under Suzuki's enlightened leadership, they sound like...well, like Bach. (Know what I mean?) Oh sure, sometimes the soprano gets on my nerves a little (BWV 21) (I prefer the Alternate Movements anyway), but that's what, two tracks out of 25? So, if you just want a few CDs of this great Bach music, or if you want to collect the entire set (and it's going to take a while, as they release a volume every couple of months), I heartily recommend Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan. More power to them.
